unfortunately this was very true when it first aired.

thank god for team four star or we'd NEVER get through it.
  • Zydrate

It was a little better than that, but yeah, at times it could be very boring.

I'm surprised to be the second one for this o.o

anyways, I'd say you're trying to inply there was alot of filler, which there was. Good thing for TeamFourStar and Dragonball Kai to be around, that helped fix that. Though I'd say this video was kinda unclear really

ok so I'm third, whatever lol

God damnit, they're STILL on Namek.

Yeah, DB Kai cleans it up a lot, but it's still far from perfect. Especially the dub...

Never really got why people think it's so good. Then again, the plot completely elluded me as a kid since I watched German dubs of the series and I didn't understand the language at the time. Although I think the plot never was the main focus like the fighting scenes.

    Also: "LEET'S FIGHTING LOOOOVE!!!"
  • JunkWatcher
It's not particularly good, it's simply wildly entertaining. Lot's of screaming, powering up, space-babble and epic fights that last for multiple episodes.
It's ridiculous, but a hell of a lot of fun.

The plot is very simple: protect the planet. That's it. Which planet you may ask? The one they're on for the time of the saga.

PS. "Taisetsu na mono protect my balls!" ;)

    LMAO EXACTLY.

DBZ's a famous anime and all, but it's equally infamous for the ungodly amount of filler. At least Kai attempted to try to slim it down a bit.
  • JunkWatcher
Actually DBZ never had all that much filler. It had something called padding. There is a difference.
  • TragicGuineaPig
    avatar
Can you explain the difference please?
  • 0dd1
    avatar
I'd say filler would be, for example, episodes with little to no plot importance while padding would be artificially lengthening episodes by, for example, constant pauses or charging up sequences or what have you.
  • JunkWatcher
I couldn't have said it better, myself.

i agree with benzaie. i love dragonballz but just read the manga.

That IS a great manga. Observe my avatar!

The original series suffered from anime production moving faster than manga production, therefore they were forced to add crap that wasn't in the manga, including lots of filler episodes and prolonged staring and powering up scenes.

Thankfully we have Kai! it's a lot more accurate to the manga.
  • Paper_Banjokami
Well I noticed that you weren't watching the Funimation dub. And I don't know if hearing it in English does anything for you, since French is your first language (I'm assuming), but the Funi dub is awesome. Especially the soundtrack, that soundtrack is just epic.
  • penguintruth

Dude, the Funimation English dub is horrible and the replacement music is soulless synth-garbage. It's practically another show altogether.

At least their DB Kai English dub is accurate and fairly well-acted. Nothing beats the Japanese cast, though.

That's why Dragon Ball Kai is great. All the time wasting stuff cut out :)

Dragon Ball Z is a fun show, but you're right that it pads itself excessively.

That was one of the advantages of DB Kai, the faster pacing. Too bad nobody bought the merchandise in Japan, leading to them stopping it before the Buu arc. Sucks, because Funimation is actually not fucking up when they dub Kai in English. That's a big step up for them.
  • kevwaffles
"Too bad nobody bought the merchandise in Japan, leading to them stopping it before the Buu arc."

Erm, no. DB Kai has consistently been in the top 3 for ratings throughout it's airtime. Before it aired the show was said to be trimmed down to ~100 episodes. It makes sense not to do the Buu arc, since they literally weren't going to do that one for DBZ until they started getting complaints and death threats for leaving the series with Goku dead and Gohan as the strongest fighter.
  • Quantum Wolf
    avatar
Isn't that what happened when the manga was originally written? Didn't Toriyama want to leave it at Cell? But then pressure from the fans forced a new story, with Goku as a mentor role? But then further fan pressure wanted Goku back fighting?
  • Sephiroth89
    avatar
Erm, no. You're not accurate either..at least not to public information (who knows what happened behind the scenes for sure)

    But according to wikipedia:
"It has also recently been revealed that due to the new anime series Toriko taking over Dragon Ball Kai's time slot in Japan, that the series will conclude with the finale of the Cell Games as opposed to including the Buu arc, which served as the ending of the manga and original Dragon Ball Z anime series. The series is scheduled to end on its 98th episode in Japan, which will be broadcast on March 27, 2011. [44]"

however it does KINDA makes since when you remember that they'd always said they aimed for around 100 episodes, perhaps it was because the company demanded that, and when they realized they couldn't without doing the Buu arc as well, it was trimmed out in favor of a new anime? (and they decided to end an arc than do SOME of the buu arc) but that's still just a theory.

The French dub I grew up with came out a good 10 years before the show was brought to USA... it had cheesy yet memorable voice acting, and kept the original soundtrack and screams.

Haha yep thats how it is. Here in Mexico they stopped when Goku transformed into Supersaiyan and repeated everything all over again at least two times before putting new episodes.

And I still loved that series.

Perfect. This is literally all you need to know about the anime.

I'm sorry but this is completely inaccurate. They have to be screaming at each other while they power-up to qualify for DBZ.

I love DBZ, to death, but it does have a lot of those moments where nothing happens. My friends/brother and I always used to make fun of the fact it took 5 episodes for them to power up; like what DarkPhoenixMishima said, hahaha. Good times.
I think the show still holds up well, though you do see it as being more corny when you're older, that's why I love DBZ Abridged. It makes fun of all those things, but with love.

I have to get a hold of DBZ Kai.
  • Sifer2
The Goku an Freeza battle was drawn out for way too long that's true. Though it was mostly the animated series makers stalling for time from what I hear. In the actual manga Freeza was killed a lot faster.

But yeah you could also easily make a 5 second DBZ parody where everyone waits for smoke to clear to see if they killed the bad guy or not. I swear that happened a million times.
  • Puzzleman
    avatar
Yeah I agree. After half a million times the smoke thing became like an annoying cliché of DBZ.
  • Gaiash
    avatar
Funny thing is it was all contained in one volume of the manga.

    "What, no "9000?" That's impossible!'

There's a difference between "most famous moment" and "summation of the entire series."

a 500+ episode show that could easily be eddited down to just under 50 if you cut out all that filler staredown scenes!!

Funniest video I have seen this week. That and revisiting Dragon Age II in 5 seconds
  • LordNifty
I personally was imagining two characters powering up, and just when they were about to attack, there would be a "To be continued..." display.

P.S. Has there been a Family Guy parody of DBZ? How long would THAT get padded out?
  • Xartarin

I remember this show as a kid. Good times, good times.

Recently I've been watching Dragonbal Z Kai, and it's actually pretty watchable! A lot of the filler scenes, such as the staring, have been cut out. I'm amazed to see that the plot and characters aren't half bad, which I really didn't appreciate when I was six or so years old.

Why are there 2 unskippable 30-second ads to watch a 28 second video?
  • Ahiru77
Goku this is all your fault!

You should've just killed Freeza instead of giving the show a bad name. xD
