Back in the 90's, there was a series of trading cards called "Star Wars Galaxy", and in the third series of said cards, they actually had a whole subset devoted to Struzan's work for the Star wars universe, from his movie posters to his novel covers.

I still have those trading cards in a binder somewhere.

2 guesses on what the surprise is
written by hamsterjelly , October 13, 2008
first off, great tribute NC. here are my guesses to the surprise. it is either:
The FINAL Final battle between Nc and Avgn
or
a review of a horror franchise like halloween, nightmare on elm street, or friday the 13th.
or it might be a less known series, like child's play or the Leprechaun films.

I had no idea the same guy painted all of those. I saw that Hocus Pocus poster in there. As if that movie didn't kick ass enough.

Feel proud NC. Your hard work at being a jackass finally paid off.

He seems like a cool guy though. Most artists are. I try to draw and I can do okay but I will never be as good or patient as him. He must've gone through sleepless weeks trying to finish all of those posters.

Y'know, sometimes we really take extravagant movie posters for granted. As an artist myself, this video fascinated me and it gave me a whole new appreciation for the art of the movie poster as well as Drew Struzan, a name I had never heard before but his works that you've shown really blew me away ("He did the "Star Wars" and "Indiana Jones" posters?!" smilies/shocked.gif )

An honest, wonderful tribute (with a nice touch of classic Nostalgia Critic humor). Great video and I'm totally curious about that Halloween surprise. smilies/grin.gif

Very informative, in my opinion movie posters help grab the attention of movie goers that wish to watch a good movie, however the last Indiana Jones poster in my opinion was really poorly made has well as the movie which was horrible. I don't care how much money it made I thought that the movie was just horrible.

WOW! All those posters from back then where drawn by this guy?! I never knew that until now. smilies/shocked.gif After seeing this I now feel inspired to try and do the same with the drawings I do and graphics I make in photoshop...

And I totally agree with you on todays posters/covers. It really is such a shame that the companies feel they need to make the movie poster look more like a run of the mill photoshoped ad. Many of them just don't have that eye-catch quality to them.

I find it kind of a shame you didn't get to interview him. Perhaps he didn't know just how popular this site is? At least he mentioned you in his radio interview.

Nowadays, computers and photoshop do most of the job.
It's like the future. Gaming, animating, editing is all done on computers, and they're constantly being upgraded to become better.

I can't believe they turned down those Hellboy posters, they fit the movies so well.. well I guess the marketing "geniuses" wanted to unnecessarily piggyback on the "dark knight" scheme, which is kinda ridicilous because as much as I like Hellboy, the material is still much closer to Harry Potter than Batman.

Oh, as for the Halloween surprise, just please don't let it be "Zombie NC versus AVGN". Epic fights aren't really epic if they come in weekly installments. smilies/smiley.gif

Man, all those great-looking movie posters and DVD covers, and I never knew the name of the guy behind them.

It's hard to believe that such amazing work by such a talented man is now being phased out for Photoshopped junk. I've never understood why people in the media are abandoning more traditional methods for all this computer gimiickry. Humans didn't stop painting just because they started sculpting, after all.

Nonetheless, a wonderful tribute to a supremely talented man. Great job!

Epic. I can't say anything else but that. It is really too bad, that the digital image manipulation came so far... It's simply just "take a picture, and slap it on something else." It's not art... It's just a little bit of effort, and anyone "can do it".

Great video man, did you get the Drew Struzan hardcover book "The Movie Posters of Drew Struzan", it's worth the investment...has all his posters in it without the text that is dropped on top of his art when it gets printed up. One thing I noticed towards the end of this video you showed the Indy IV teaser poster, I am sure that drew had nothing to do with it, look at the teaser and look at the final...the teaser looks photoshoped.

A Very Gifted Man...
written by ElectronicaFan83 , October 14, 2008
A hugely enjoyable review that proves CGI needs to go a step back. I've always been a fan of Drew Stuzan's work when the 1997 Star Wars Special Editions hit cinemas. I thought those posters were absolutely outstanding and i've since been following his work. I loved Drew's artwork of a George Lucas Movie Companion cover a decade ago.

There is a great featurette on the Blade Runner DVD 5-Disc Set of Drew with his revised DVD artwork for the film which is highly recommended. (I thought his vision captured the 1982 film perfectly and I thought it was better than the original version that came out to cinemas!)

I have a Hotdog Magazine (Now deleted in the UK) with that Hellboy artwork of Drew's on the cover and I wondered why they never used it! It was refreshing to see his work again on the fourth Indiana Jones film. (Very well said about it being unnessessary, Doug! Lol!)

I really enjoyed this review, a huge thank you for putting it up. Can't wait for the Halloween surprise! (Can't believe it was a year later that the Top 11 Scariest Nostalgic Moments came online!)

Kudos to you, Doug!

well, it's quite honorable for Struzan to do such paintings with so much style, since elaborate paintings have been made since the time people started to form gathering places tens of thousands of years ago.

I notice Drew's work when I was a kid
written by Skunk , October 14, 2008
When the original Star Wars movies first came out, I noticed that it was all done by the same guy. Then Indiana Jones came out and again, I noticed it. Then I started to notice his little signiture and art style in a shit-ton of movies thereafter. So I guess from about the mid 80's on after, I've always held him in high regard and I appreciated his notoriety being communicated to the masses (or at least to NC fans). I didn't know he did album covers though, I'm going to have to dig through my collection and see if I notice any...

What a great tribute, I didn't even know of this artist before. It was very interesting and fun, especially when you mentioned the new movie posters featuring only an actor's face. XD

Awesome video.

You know... i can help myself but getting choked up and filled with joy at this review. The funny may be gone, but... there's so much depth to this.

I have half an idea that you posted this as a bit of a message to all those who entered the poster contest. Had this been shown before the Battle, i'm sure the entries would have tried to follow in Drew's immortal footsteps and tried to pin point what they wanted to get across in the simple paper they had (digital paper, of course)

Watching this made me feel... ashamed. Ashamed of my poster for the contest. Not nearly as beautiful or meaningful as I thought, looking back. If only I could have known what the expectations were or weren't... I don't know.

Wonderful review. I might cry with the soothing calm of inner peace and insight smilies/smiley.gif

Thank you

Thank you for this, Struzan really is a master craftsman and deserves far more recognizition than he receives. This was one of your best NCs yet, and was even a little touching.

He seems very underrated despite all the work he's done, but hopefully this will bring people's interest in him personally.

Damn, I never heard of this guy; I'm ashamed of myself!smilies/sad.gifsmilies/sad.gif

I've seen his artwork many times, from Back to the Future, Indiana Jones to Star Wars (obviously), but never knew his name. And indeed, what a load of bore with the Hellboy poster. The one Drew made was much more epic. Can't we like convince the movie industry to go back to this. Some covers are okay, like Iron Man, etc. but the most are just dull. Thank you for this tribute!

Perusing over Struzan's artwork is like reliving the past 20-30 years. And there are SO many iconic ones not even mentioned. Check out his site. You won't be disappointed.

Then come back, rewatch the video and every time you see a Star Wars, Indy or BTTF poster, take a shot. You'll be hammered by halfway thru!

That " Special Halloween Surprise" you have in store wouldn't happen to be DOUBLE DRAGON now, would it?

P.S. Sorry if I spoiled it for you. But it's the Truth, in fact it already says on your Next 9 NC's that after the Drew Struzan video would be Double Dragon.

P.S.S. Sorry if I ruined the surprise for everyone else.
