written by Divock , August 21, 2008
Good choice for the first anime review. You were reviewing it in a very good way, you looked at what was awkward, but used that to determine what it is and why its awesome. I have never seen Trigun, but this gives me all the more reason to. I feel mad though because I KNOW what the spoiler is, my friends told me, I'll murder them later...(jk).

Good Review, but this is my impression of the series...
written by MrRube , August 21, 2008
Trigun, for me, was a series that had a lot of things going for it, but I felt it fell flat. I had a truly kick ass premise; a wandering disaster wandering for redemption. This concept led me to draw a parallel to Kenshin. Kenshin was a wandering samurai, who sought redemption for the lives that he had taken. Sure the settings are different, but essentially the protagonists are the same bumbling pacifists. The general story arcs are very similar also; each character must stop a certain villain; Shishio Mokoto in the case of Kenshin, and Millions Knives in Trigun. Even main villian's highly trained squad are very similar, the Gung Ho Guns, and the Juppongatana. For each charecter, the closer that they get to their face off with the main villian, the more they realize that it is very likely that they will have to abandon their vow/morals and kill him.

Maybe this is me just over analyzing things, but I just couldn't help noticing these things. I'm sure that I'll be flamed for this, but before you do so, think about what I've said. Thanks, and good night.

On another note, Anime Heaven is turning out to be a very good addition to TGWTG, good review, and hope to see more soon.

*Initiate Slow Clap*
written by LordVonQuack , August 21, 2008
You hooked me at your AMV Animenia episode. Dare say I was very interested in you during your theme song countdown, but it was your look into the multimedia Russian roulette of AMVs that made me say "This guy is different. I like him." I was more or less satisfied with AMV Heaven, though I felt it didn't show case anything. Perhaps a more detailed review, but regardless I watched it a few times. I watched your Hair showcase with good humor, but it's this video sir, this video that cements you in my own opinion as one of the best.

I came into this thinking "Meh, I've never seen Trigun, so I can't imagine much of this..." See I didn't even get time to finish that thought before you wowed me. Everyone takes pot shots at their fans, but they way you did it was humorous. I laughed at the curtains bit, but I appreciated, respected, and revered the rest of it. I can't quite put into words how much I enjoyed it because it was original. Your fear seemed to be becoming a rip off, but nothing about this makes me say "He's just Doug but doing those shows with the spiky hair kids and the well endowed high school girls". You sir are original, and I applaud you on that.

Everything about this review felt right to me. I never watched Trigun, but now I really want to see it. Now, in all honesty every Benzaie video has made me want to play the game he features (ironically enough my main articles are showcases. ...there's irony in there somewhere), so perhaps my new perspective means nothing to you, but let me tell you this: I am a SHONEN WHORE! I have read nothing but One Piece and Bleach manga because I'm a fight junkie, and besides Deathnote I can safely say I've never read a manga that appealed to the mind (Well I guess Doubt... but we all know that's not going to have a satisfying ending). To make me want to see this show is an achievement, even if you don't know, so for that I thank you.

But it's not just the promotion, it's the entertainment. As I said, I respected AMV Heaven, and I became a fan with the first Animenia, but this catapulted me to a new level of appreciation because your humor is fresh and different. People will always say "This is a ripoff of that, and that's a ripoff of that", and perhaps it's my ignorance of the newly created internet review system, but you are original. Anyone can review anime... -anyone-, but you do it well. I don't know if you've read my topic in your board of the forum, but you truly are the Fraiser of this site.

Trust me, that's a compliment.

You don't use cheap gags or swear words to appeal to fans (not that anyone does, but it's a common crutch we see in comedy), but rather it's timing and spot on delivering. People who call you a rip off can't see passed: Doug - Television/Movies and James - Video Games. You have a fantastic wit, whimsical diction, and overall just an amazing ability to sell your work. I'm overly impressed many times over, and I thank you for that. I love your look into the strange culture you praise so much because it's not a fan saying "Anime is R teh gretest!" or even a much more dignified version of that response. Instead it was great journalism (forgive me if that's the wrong field to reference) coupled with an honest enthusiasm for the topic material that shows.

I post such a large amount because on Benzaie's Kabuki Quantum Fighter video that you've never gotten a post like my fanboy rant about my favorite European (aside from Liam Neeson). Well I'm here to state for the record, now you do. It may mean nothing to you, but in my mind you are among the elite of the reviewers. You're fresh, you're new, and you're original. I tried to avoid swearing in this post in reference of that, but perhaps you didn't notice. Either way I want to state that I love these videos, and I encourage you to keep it up, either in review or showcase format. Really, you're entertaining enough to watch eating pocky if you use your wordplay like you do here.

I don't give a crap if you're similar to the other reviewers; it gives us another person to watch and enjoy! Um... that came out weird...

Anyway, I already started Death Note because of your mention of it in the top 11 anime openings (and you were right about it being surprisingly good, minus the first opening). Now I have to add Trigun. Good thing I found an anime website. smilies/tongue.gif

I enjoyed the review

Trigun is simple a classic for otakus, but IMO and many other peoples, around episode 16 it fell flat and became too much like a generic anime!

to say this was an "unsung anime" is kinda awkward considering for 4 years it shared the lime light of Adult Swim with Cowboy Bebop, as apposed to Hellsing making its glory on animidnight on the Encore Action channel or Berserk on DVD only.

PS. Review Berserk (or I will bash your head in with a 100t wooden hammer J/K or am I?)

I just realized Vash is just a rip off of Saeba Ryo from the City Hunter series. Basically its just fusing the comic relief character with the protagonist to make a more interesting and deep non-generic character.

City Hunter>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Trigun (cause I like mid to late 80s anime, They are actually drawn, not drawn, change here there and recycle)

awesome review. I was kinda hoping you would start reviewing anime series. It's much much more fun to actually watch someone review them, rather than just read reviews (which I dont do much). This review was not also fun, but informative as well. I dont know how I missed the whole Gunsmoke name of the planet, its probably because I have only watched the original japanese (I hate dubbed anime), which never mentions the name of the planet. Or maybe I just wasn't paying that much attention. I love how you voiced those whiners in the beginning. Suits them perfectly. If you don't have anything constructive to say, then keep your opinions to yourself. This video raised your status in my book. Keep it up.

Trigun was one of my earlier anime series as well, yet it has remained one of the best. Not the best, but quite high in the top 10. The series is a tearful journey that is literally impossible to put down until the very end. So those who haven't seen it, best to start watching it early in the morning, less you want to keep on watching it 5 AM like I did. Im not really into tragic animes, unless there is something to compensate or uplift the experience. In Trigun, there is funny humour and cool fighting sequences to balance it all out. And the story itself is so full of twists and turns that even a roadmap can't make sense of it. But still, it's not a confusing anime (á la Clannad/Air/Kanon series).

Trigun was... I THINK the 3rd anime I watched. First was Love Hina, but I can't remember if I watched trigun or kenshin next. Kenshin remaining just SLIGHTLY higher on my favourite list of anime - At least if I don't count season 4.

People who say your a rip off of the nostalgia critic make me laugh. Not because you aren't, but because in the FIRST THING YOU DID, you said I'm that dude in the suede a rip of of the NC. Then a little later, why top 11? Because I want to be as much like the NC as possible. Its as if people forgot thats how you started or something.

Whether you liked the anime or not. At least you can put in terms we all can understand. BE YOURSELF! DO NOT CONFORM! There is too much of that crap anyway. No one can be original anymore. Yes, you may have started out like the NC but you are showing us that you are something very much different. I LIKE IT! Keep up the good work. Looking forward to your next show.

nice review, it's pretty hard to be satirical about something/an anime you like and you did a pretty good job.
Though, like many, I would like it if you stopped using dubs for your video fragments. It sucks. And I thought it was pretty clear to see what Vash was about but yeah
For the rest, keep going then I'll keep watching.

And to everyone requesting a review:
Why would you want a review about an anime you've allready seen? Isn't that... a bit pointless?

I see that a vast majority of people who cut down your reviews and reviewing style seem to point out the little bits and pieces of anime that most people don't notice. I'm going to assume that those who do so are actually hardcore anime fans, as characterized by the commenter hooking together the Trigun anime and manga differences.

You don't preach to the choir, Dude in the Suede. Your reviews speak to those of us who don't usually watch anime, and tell us the good things that it can represent. You don't sugar-coat, describe things as the "BEST EVAR", nor do you showcase just how weird and horrible the experiences can be. You just show us what is and how you feel about it. You have my congratulations on perfecting a reviewing style that is not just refreshing to us watchers, but is downright impossible for most reviewers.

I look forward to your next review.

Great review, but I am still afraid to watch late 90s anime after the circus episode of Kenshin that I accidentally watched.

But actually you re-enabled my interest in anime in general with your videos. I remember not caring anymore when I noticed that many of the people connected to it where snobby and took it all way too serious. Your approach is way more open minded and honest.

@kenzoil:

As good as I think City Hunter is as a whole, you can't say it doesn't recycle things - because it does in fact a lot. And it seems that the series might have inspired some bipolar anime characters, but then again Ryo could be classified as a mixture between Kenshiro and Lupin.

@Kohijin
Lupin was never a serious character at all. His character was pure comical with some action.

Kenshiro? as in Fist of the North Star Kenshiro? Ummmm..........OK

Saeba Ryo was the first character to be serious and comical. Actually if you re watch city hunter it seems like its recycled because of them cutting on frames from a over the top 24 frames down to 3 frame talk scenes the majority of it is not recycled as opposed sailor moon and pretty much all of naruto. City Hunter recycle rate was about 1/50 of the series, trigun was about 1/15 and naruto before shippudon was 1/5 recycled (embarrasing).

Not like the majority of viewers will pick up on the differences in recycle scenes unless its obvious as in Naruto and sailor moon.

I guess I just like the majority of art style in mid to late 80s anime

Your review was pretty cool and I feel like going to the video store and rent Trigun right now. I skipped the first couple of minutes, though... I think it's a better idea to just ignore flames you get from viewers instead of talking about them in your video.

Your reviews are so awesome I got an account here just to comment on them. Great job!
After watching this review I felt compelled to watch Trigun....I have to say, I was expecting more from it. It wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't the best anime I've ever seen.
I'd like to see you try to review some type of shojo anime. I wonder how long you could sit through the sugary cuteness without going completely insane. smilies/cheesy.gif

BEST ANIME EVER
written by sandell124 , August 23, 2008
Well, it's actually the only anime i've seen
and that's not counting Pok'e'mon or digimon, ha ha ha
in fact, it is you, mr dude in the suede, who introduced me to trigun, i was watching your first video and liked the trigun theme tune, so decided to have a watch, and i got instantly hooked all the way through.
And by the way, Vash is NOT a doofus! How many heroes have you seen who refuse to kill anyone? (Not including Knives and the other guy of course SPOILERS) but yeah, he's fecking ORESOME!!!!)
LOVE AND PEACE!!!!!!!

i'm a big anime fan and i have never seen an anime be reviewed, and i have to say this is really good, you mention the good, the bad and the downright weird things in anime and it makes it a very professional review.
since i am an anime fan i have to request you review the Hellsing OVA's if you have time. Also i've been meaning to watch Trigun and your review has pushed me that extra bit to make me stop being lazy and find out where i can watch the episodes and watch them (obviously smilies/tongue.gif) so thanks for the review and keep at it and i'm sure your next review will be just as (if not better) than this one smilies/smiley.gif. *stops ranting and goes to find then watch Trigun*

I signed on just to comment on this video. Great work TDITS. Great style, and presentation.

I see a lot of people asking about Various and sundry big-name Anime... I'm actually going to make a somewhat obscure suggestion... it was among the early releases when VHS was the only option for Anime... I remmeber seeing the trailers for it on various tapes I got, but could never find it... and by the time I started ordering from the internet, it had been forgotten. Recently Rediscovered, I found a refreshing series, fun watch, great comedy. The Anime in question:

Ushio and Tora.

Now, since, to my knowledge, it hasn't been re-released on DVD, possibly due to it only being a 10 episode run, You may have to get a little creative to view/review it. But still, I'd love to see it come back. More people need to experience the Anime equivalent of Calvin and Hobbes.

Spoony and yourself are great finds that I have found through the NC which I found through the AVGN originally. Don't let anyone stop you in your quest. Though I was never a big anime fan, I just may be after watching your reviews. It turns people onto a genre that they may never have experienced otherwise. Never stop doing what you enjoy. The world is full of trolls and stupid people, and more so online. I tend bar and if you've never done so, you should. You get a first-hand experience of how stupid the general public is (sad but true). If you're unique (and you are) stick with it. The world needs originality and creativity. Anyone not trying to be either one is just lame. Haters are a dime a dozen (maybe even less), but it takes drive and enthusiasm to rise above the norm and create something entertaining and worthwhile. You keep doing what you're doing, and people like myself will continue to enjoy something outside of their normal realm. For the rest of the masses, they can chuckle over the kid flipping his go-cart over the same ramp over and over. Never question yourself when you feel like you're doing something original. Getting ahead in life is helped by riding the coattails of others to make a name for yourself. I'm a fan of your material, so keep it coming.

This guy's not all that funny, but I'm not sure if that's really his aim. He is informative, though.

I wonder when he's gonna do the top 10 anime girls or if he'll ever review Naruto.

For real, I said he was good. Why does treating anyone as less than God get you -'s here? Q__Q moar

After watching this I immediately watched the first episode of Trigun and now I'm hooked. I've watched the first 8 episodes so far. Thanks once again and keep making these brilliant videos!

Not bad this time around. I have to say, I was pretty turned off by the first couple videos. You already got my critique (and responded!) about AMV 'heavens' first, and honestly, 'Hair' was just... well, sufficed to say making fun of Anime's hair has been around as long as anime.

I could argue with you until I'm blue in the face about whether anime is 'under-appreciated' (You must have been around during Anime's giant boom, at least in the states, and to be totally honest with you, I get just as irritated by people who insist Japanese Animation is the very pinnacle of creative story-telling--yes, those people exist and they live largely in cons), but that's neither here nor there. I actually think you were really spot on, and you're easing into your own voice now, which is another plus.

Nice job.

I really really don't care for anime. The whole "artform" is so glutted with garbage that It seems an almost impossible task to scoop the cream of the crop, as it doesn't seem to float.

All that being said, I find your reviews pretty awesome. The "mudkips"/"wat?" part was really hilarious, and you clearly have a love for the anime, and a sharp wit and sense of humor.

Keep it up, and I'll watch them, even though I could hardly care less about the subject matter, lol

I already watched the entire series, your review is Right On Target.
Just another anime if you aren't a fan of anime, this one needs to be given a chance (Unlike series such as Ninja Scroll or perhaps Hellsing)

Nice job and thanks for the good reminder of a great anime.

(I consider other great animes such as Beserk and Kenshin Battosai the Manslayer)

Wonderfull analysus of it the part that you said that made you choke up was maybe the only time watching any type of entertainment and felt somewhat emotion. Perhaps next time you should review an anime that is more in the lime light.Maybe Deathnote? It's quite obvious you've watched it.

Wait do you really like mudkips?

I hated that show, mainly because it was such a humongous let-down from the manga. You have to wait until really late in the show before you find out about Knives, who was the most important villan, you don't know anything about the plot for most of it, and Vash it such a bitch! In the manga, Vash would do stupid things for comic relief, but he would turn into a complete badass whenever he needed to, and I don't think that he ever used his Angel Arm in the show.
