Well, my complaint with this review is that the movie makes clear that Crocodile Dundee is a bit of a nut. You also take some of the jokes out of context (he "thinks" his way) to make a point. But other than that, still funny review.

Ya, this movie was bad. But the second one was just a pile of shit that made this one look golden.
I've been to Australia, love that place. The people there were some of the most polite youll find.
Only complaint I have, thier McDonalds put (or used to, maybe) put beets on the burgers in place of pickles. That was just.... odd

But don't think you guys were hit hard by Hollywood, Aussie! Hollywood still thinks I live on a farm, behind a windwill, wearing my cloggs, with tulips in my backyard, plugging up a dike with my finger, getting high every night at the local coffeeshop! smilies/angry.gif

written by SuperDrops , September 23, 2008
Good job, AussieCritic! I have to admit that I like this movie, but more BECAUSE I know it's such a piece of shit. You really nailed it down with your review and not only did you smack down this one, you smacked down on every nationality stereotyping movie Hollywood ever made. I'm German, and like the Dutch we have always gotten the big stereotyping slap from hollywood. They reduce all germans to Bavarians, which is especially funny, when you know that most Bavarians don't even think of themselves as Germans, but would rather have Bavaria be it's own nation.

I can imagine that Crocodile Dundee is harder to swallow for an Australian, but I always thought it was good for a laugh or two.

Check your facts next time; "Dundee" is a homegrown, Australian-made movie!
written by Revo214 , September 23, 2008
G'Day Aussie Critic!

Your video was pretty good, and I laughed a good deal. However, your outrage at "Hollywood" over the silly stereotyping caused by this movie is flat out misplaced. "Crocodile Dundee" was conceived and made by AUSTRALIANS!

Exhibit 1: Paul Hogan ("Crocodile Dundee" himself). Hogan was born in Australia, had a comedy show on Australian TV for years, and became the symbol for the Australian tourism industry all before diving into Dundee. Ever heard the phrase "I'll put another shrimp on the barbie"? Yeah, that was him.

Exhibit 2: Rodney Ansell (aka, the REAL LIFE "Crocodile Dundee"). His two months surviving in the wilds of the Northern Territory were the inspiration for Dundee's backstory. Oh, he was also a real asshole criminal who ended up dying in a shootout with police. Kinda provides a little support for the "Australians are lunatic wildmen" stereotype, dontcha think?

Exhibits 3 and 4: John Cornell and Peter Falman (respectively, the producer and director of "Dundee"). Both Australians with long histories in Australian television; Falman actually directed the opening and closing ceremonies of the Sydney Olympics. So I guess your country feels pretty comfortable letting him communicate the character and values of Australians to all the world.

I know what you're thinking: "Well, of course they had Australians involved; they had to shoot the damn movie in Australia! All the bad stereotypes are REALLY the responsibility of the people who thought up the movie!" And you're right. However, guess who came up with and wrote the movie? Some overpaid screenwriter in LA? Some asshole studio execs in between lunch at the Brown Derby and a round at the country club?

Nope. Turns out you've already met the writers: Australians John Cornell, Peter Falman and Paul Hogan. These guys set out to make movie about their homeland and the quirky characters it produces, and the movie they made was "Crocodile Dundee". Not only that, but the production was financed entirely by Australians (Hogan, entreprenuer Kerry Packer, and a couple of famous Australian Cricket players).

And get this: they actually toned down some of the Australian slang for the version we saw in America, meaning that they felt the movie's stereotypes would be accepted by Australians, but might seem a bit too outrageous to Americans. So much for the idea that all the zany "wildman of the bush" was only put in the movie to make it appeal to stupid Yanks. Turns out that this movie was conceived and created BY Australians, and designed to appeal TO Australians!

In short, if Australians want to find someone to blame for how they are perceived by the rest of the world, they need only look in the mirror. Crikey!

Sorry to shoot u down here dude, but the when writing the movie, Paramount Bought the right ASAP. and were Telling Paul Hogan and John Cornell what to RE-write, we had a long ass doco about it here, Paul hogan claims he hated every minute of Re-writing this film, for dirty money. If i remember the name of the doco, ill post it here. But yeah, partly right, but mostly wrong. and we got the REAL story of Rodney Ansell later on. Really boring story, no wonder they told them to re-write it.

Crocodile Dundee 1 and 2 weren't made by Hollywood. They were actually Australian films made to appeal to American audiences. Hollywood didn't get involved until the 3rd movie, which is why it was so much worse than the other two.

There are actually 2 versions of Crocodile Dundee out there. There's the Australian version, and the international version with a lot of the Australian slang replaced with more commonly understood terms.

Aussie Critic, it's still an Australian movie
written by Revo214 , September 23, 2008
Hmmm...

If I'm Paul Hogan and I've become a national pariah for the stereotypes I've placed upon my homeland, well of course I'd say "No, no, you've got me all wrong; I had no choice in the matter!".

Just like he had no choice but to do a sequel.

And then another one.

Seems to me that if Paul Hogan was really "hating every minute" of the writing before the first movie, then he would have really hated actually filming it. And really REALLY hated when the movie became the huge international success that it did. With all that hate built up, and with angry Australians berating him for ruining their global reputation, wouldn't he have said "No effin' way, mate!" to the progressively dumb sequels? Or at least demanded some more control over the writing?

No one held a gun to Hogan's head to force him to make these movies (not even a dead kangaroo). He CHOSE to make them, and he CHOSE to play up those stereotypes, studio interference or not, along with every other Australian who made money hand over fist on those movies.

And once the money was made and the mansions were built, he became concerned with his own reputation at home. Started to blame "those damn Yanks". Maybe even privately funded a documentary to help his argument...

Now I'll admit, I've never seen or heard of the documentary you're talking about. But I'm looking at the facts, and following them where they take me. And what they tell me is that Australia had a far larger role in Crocodile Dundee than you are willing to admit.

G'day Aussie! and response for Revo.
written by thatsgoodoj , September 23, 2008
Hey There Aussie, Probably your best work here on tgwtg.

and to Revo214,

I'm Australian man, I've seen this documentry about Crocodile Dundee,
What Aussie Said is true, he was basically told to Rewrite parts of the story by and i quote from Paul Hogan "Big Time Hollywood Shitheads."

That Documentry has been showed here so many times now on SBS, just can't remember the damn title at this time. But yeah, there you have it man. It's True.

Plus here in the Land of OZ we usually refer to all american producing companies as 'Hollywood', even if they're not based in L.A.

And he did the sequels, only cos he was in strife with the government taxation office, so he needed money.
and yet, he is once again... so don't be surprised if we see a Crocodile Dundee 4: The Old Man has still got it.

But anyway, your best one here aussie, hope to see more like this!

Quite funny review! Love the accent. ^_^

Though I can see how it would be offensive to aussies the tone of the movie always stuck me as rather tounge-in-cheek. It doesn't take itself too seriously and doesn't expect the audience to do so either.

And of course it exaggerates the stereotypes. It's what movies do (with a few exceptions).
Partly because "it's funnier that way" and mostly because producers thinks the audience are morons. smilies/wink.gif

I have, if you live in south east Melbourne.

I enjoyed your critque review of this movie, it was clever and funny.
However, as an Aussie I love this movie!
Even though it heavily stereotypes Australians as laid back and living life the easy way, it should be noted that these elements drew American audiences and during the 1980s, Australia was viewed by America in a positive light. In addition, if you read the film closer, it also addresses serious issues such as the environment and Aborigines.

The sequel was awful, that film was obviously a money driven idea.

I think your review is well done but somehow pointless. Of course this movie has lots of stereotypes, and I never thought this was a perfect depiction of Australia. I'm italian and I know a few things about stereotypes in american movies, they've based their knowledge of my country on italian-americans and that's completely wrong. I understand some parts of this movie made you angry, but: 1) most of the lies about Dundee's adventures are INTENTIONAL. It's just obvious and it's part of the fun, Mitch is a anti-hero who tells lots of bullsh*t (just look at the funny scene when he pretends he's shaving with a knife). 2) This movie is really GOOD. Excellent dialogue, nice acting, perfect casting and a simple story just like an old golden-age comedy (Roger Ebert talked about this, check his review). Bottom line... if you want to bash a good movie for promoting stereotypes about your country, choose carefully its worst scenes and always use your sense of humour.

There are actually 2 versions of Crocodile Dundee out there. There's the Australian version, and the international version with a lot of the Australian slang replaced with more commonly understood terms.

They did that with the Mad Max films as well. It's kinda stupid really, to dub over slang words. =/

I've always loved this movie and being a pom I know plenty of other brits that love it too, still think it's great, the knife line is an absolute classic! To be honest i find nothing funnier than when other countries try to stereotype my country because it's a top talking point for our stand up comedians. There's just nothing funnier than seeing stereotypical british characteristics, when standing around with a gang of friends one always has to do a typical british chav, working class bloke, divroced man, etc and it's funny every time, so if we stereotype ourselves, nothing wrong with overseas joining in with us. Well that's how I view things anyway,smilies/tongue.gif maybe that's just a British thing? To most Brits i'd say Crocodile Dundee comes across as cool, so no need to be too harsh?

No that do exist IRL. My sister is studying in New Zealand and has a kiwi* BF, and he's confirmed that the rivalry do exist.
Of course, different people take it in various levels of seriousness, but still. smilies/wink.gif

*kiwi - a New Zealander, or the bird.

I'm Irish married to a Bosnian. Ya we live in the U.S. but we're not all Yankees. I found the term to just as offending as the Aussie did Croc Dondee. So the street goes both ways. Other than that great review.

I can explain this one.
In the US 'Yankee' means a southerner (or a NY Yankees fan).
Outside the US (particularly overseas) 'yankee' means a citizen of the US.

i understand why you dont like the way they picture Australia, but if my country was like that it whould be awsome, i live in sweden here they picture us like we live on the mountains, in small houses made of logs, and like snowing always, and all girls names is Inga and everybody has blond hair. smilies/grin.gif

Don't forget the polar bears in the streets. smilies/wink.gif
Although I think the Canadians get hit by that too...
There's also the concept of the 'swedish sin' asociated with swedish girls, thanks to two or three films made in the 70's, and a misinterpretation over swedes being verbally open about sex meaning we were physically open about it too. Not quite correct as many males have discovered to their sorrow. smilies/wink.gif

That's also behind the mistaken belief that Sweden and/or the scandinavian countries have the highest suicide rate in the world (we slightly above average but not much IIRC).
Sweden was one of the first countries to report the rate of suicides accurately to WHO in the 70's.
Many countries had cultures and/or religions that had suicide as a taboo (the catholic countries n particular) and did not and/or could not give accurate reports to the WHO.
Kind of like Iran claims to have no homosexuals today.

Super stereotypes
written by Sockpuppet , September 30, 2008
Pretty good review. I sort of wondered how australians felt about being stereotyped as supermen-- More Tarzan, actually. Closest thing I, as an american, have seen like that about us was the old british show "Pulaski, the TV Detective", about an american actor in Britain who's rude & stupid guy but really really honest and good in a fight. Sort of the urban version of Crocodile Dundee, but less polite.

And I gotta say, you are one handsome mofo-- You look almost exactly like ME, you lucky bastard. smilies/wink.gif

In the US, "yankees" are NORTHERNERS, not southerners. Specifically New England area, really, but to a southerner, anyone from north of the Mason/Dixon line is a yankee.

Finally, the Aussie perspective.
written by Shadowdancer21b , November 04, 2008
I must say it's great to find out that this unrealistic, cheesy pile of nonsense didn't do well in Australia. Did the Yahoo Serious movies do well over there? I actually enjoyed those goofy films, despite having discriminating taste in movies(no, really, I took film appreciation class and everything.).

Hey, just curious, is that you posting on the SA Forums, or is it another douche imposter?
I was just browsing the Forum and I saw that "ThatAussieGuy" just made an account...
...He also has a link to a Photobucket picture with your Logo (the one that starts off every "Rave Review").

At least he's not making a huge Thread saying "I AM THAT AUSSIE GUY!!!!!11"

I love how non-Americans complain about the "foreign stereotypes" in American movies...as if yours are any better.

Ask yourself one question. How many movies have you seen from your own homeland that relied on the dumb, redneck, Southern-born, Texas-accented, warmongering, imperialist American stereotype?

Listen closely and repeat after me. EVERYBODY STEREOTYPES EVERYBODY.

Just because America makes more movies than any other one country (that I'm aware of) doesn't mean we're any more or less prone to stereotyping other cultures as the rest of you people.

None. we don't have time for that... we concentrate on our own homeland.

a good critic to rip it a new one.
