Well, It's been turned on...surprisingly nothing has happened...what a shocker ¬_¬
written by SukiViolet , September 10, 2008
I don't believe it'll destroy the planet!

If some paranoid fuck came up to me and asked if LHC will destroy the world, I'd slap him around the face and tell him to stop being a twat. Anyone with an ounce on sense knows it won't happen so we keep going with our day-to-day lives.
-Anyone hiding under a table with a duvet cover over their head can fuck right off!

What bothers me is what newspaper articles I've read seem only to highlight the possibilities of that worse case scenario. If the British media attempted to enduce mass panic as an action to tackle the credit crunch or some other form "Annoying Bullshit" then they've sincerely failed as I have yet to see hundreds of people in mass panic running around the streets of London.

Besides, it's 9:20am on the 10th right now and (apparently) it's just been turned on...I'm still here and we're all FINE!

I'm a proper science geek, so i'm looking forward to what they'll discover.
Aso the world inst going to end. the chances of the LHC creating a world ending black hole is about the same as a UFO landing on the lock-ness monster's back.
And also, the forces in the universe that create black oles every day are way, WAY stronger than anything the LHC could cook up. If you're gonna worry about the end of the world due to black holes, thats probably a more rational thing to worry about.

Oh and just because its not going to happen, doesnt mean we cant have fun scaring the shit out of people ^^

NOT Swedish!!)?!...Even when I went to the United States, they offered me a Swedish form, to fill in!!....And nobody even knows that in our country, there is the leading facility for atom physics (CERN)!..That's soo depressing.. smilies/tongue.gif

one word bollocks!

This black hole crap is a bunch of junk. First off the experiment is taking 2 protons and colliding the 2 at near light speed in near absolute zero emulating the supposed events that happened AFTER the Big Bang. let me explain what is amazing about this, the closer you get to absolute zero (0 k or -273.5 C) the slower matter moves, absolute zero is when all matters stops. Which means they're obtaining incredible speeds in conditions that would slow protons down considerable. Now we got that out of the way lets start on the black hole propaganda. I know a lot about absolute zero but was uninformed on exactly what made or is a black hole till recently.
Black hole is implosion do to too much matter in one area creating anti-mater (supposedly), if anti-matter followed the same rules as matter then near absolute zero would abolish any threat that anti-matter will have. If a microscopic black hole is formed then Theory of Hawkins Radiation is proven but that also means that the black hole will dissipate in a sec or even faster (this means micro-black hole is not harmful to anyone 100 feet out or closer depending). What is highly likely to happen is the creation of a black body that will also dissipate rapidly, a black body is gravity that suck all the light rays in a given area.
Benefits to the experiment: This is actually very beneficial to human society, the experiment will prove 3 laws (sorry law of gravity) or prove the 3 laws false. If successful it could prove the big bang theory, Give solid evidence to delve more into quantum physics. Hopefully this experiment succeeds because it will speed up the ITER project and that benefit all civil society (just think of your electric bill every month being 100x cheaper). The sooner ITER is finish the faster global warming will seem like a myth.

(I learned about absolute zero in high school chem. class, I learned about black hole, black body and The theory of Hawkins Radiation on the internet, so my sources could have been skewed, feel free to correct me if I said something wrong.

The experiment is over you know, and we are not dead. This was just an other stupid internet legend, there was no change to destroy the world, and anybody who had really read real scientist information knew it. It was one of the greatest and most important experiment for the humanity and (i hope) will hep to answer many questions.

By the way, the apocalypse is not for 2012, there is a new prophecy every 10 years, and we are tired to hear it from uncultivated people.

I really can't stand this crap. I mean besides this whole thing going on now. There seems to be a huge base of nut jobs who keep rambling on about prediction of the end of the world. What is wrong with these people? Are they looking forward to the day the world ends? Are their lives so meaningless that they have to rant & rave about the world ending to scare people who actually enjoy their lives? Personally I try to ignore that crap. Yeah the world is going to end at one point but why would we want to know when? That just causes unneeded dread which with all the crap going on these days, we could do without. I just want to live a happy life & not have to worry about this kind of Bullshit.

I don't understand why you're so angry, man. The only reason people are up in arms about this being potentially dangerous is because Hollywood has portrayed this kind of science as such. How DARE we have such hubris as to try to break free from our itty bitty reality and understand the greater machinations of the universe? We must be MAD!

Personally, I'm excited. I've dedicated rather a lot of time and study to this sort of thing and any new pieces of the puzzle they have to offer, conspiracy theories notwithstanding, I'm glad to accept.

R.E.M. is totally lame
written by LordVonQuack , September 10, 2008
But the point remains, the world is always on some fictional doomsday clock. This atom splitter was just the most dangerous one since it was manmade as opposed to the countless biblical ones that supposedly follow our man made series of dates and times. If it wasn't this creating black holes that even the Black Hole doctor Steven Hawkins himself said would do nothing, it would be nuclear bombs. If it wasn't nuclear bombs, it would be overpopulation. If it wasn't overpopulation, it would extinct species creating a chain reaction to do us in. I mean really, this is so silly. We're all destined to die, and when mother earth says it's time, it's time. However this atom splitter isn't part of nature.

But if my main man Steven Hawkins says it's cool, then it's cool. I mean he is the pinnacle of intelligence.

And don't worry about the haters Aussie. I still loe you.

People are being STUPID about this on the Internet. I don't mean the video or the people goofing on it - actually, I think the "LHC will end the world" joke is a pretty funny one, as long as we know it's a joke. No, I'm talking about posts like that asinine one by Modyman up there, in which people presume to know everything worth knowing about cutting-edge physics experiments, when in fact they understand NOTHING. I mean, hell, I know very little about physics, I'll be honest. But I still know the idea behind these experiments isn't "hey, maybe we can create worlds or black holes or some shit, awesome."

People who really, really know their shit - I mean, they're world-class at knowing their shit - seem to think that experiments like those being conducted with the LHC could significantly advance our knowledge of the universe. That's good enough for me. I don't know where random people on the Internet get off presuming that they understand things well enough to declare the whole thing a waste of money without even backing it up.

The new gadget that people exclaim will end the world is something I've never worried about. If it does make a black hole by some odd chance, it would be too weak to do any real damage or so I've read. As for the 2012 thing, there are about seven different sources pointing to December 12, 2012 as the end of the world. Not that it really means anything, because no one can know if it will or won't happen, but I don't see why the chances are any greater than they are right now. After all, we have a world-ending supervolcano that should have erupted years ago to trigger a new ice age, then again we survived the last ice age, and we were far less prepared. Anyway, the only thing about 2012 that even worries me is the net neutrality thing.

No to most of the crap.

50% on the 2012 stories for reasons I don't need to list.

For asteroids hitting the earth... Please note that when an asteroid enters our solar system, 90% of time it will hit Jupiter because it is the biggest planet therefor has the biggest gravitational Pull... Jupiter is the reason why we are here today, without it, Earth would have gotten hit a number of times (FACT).

People make the rumors because scientists are funded by governments... Facts about catastrophic events would cause chaos.

All I can add is I can wish our power hungry governments could concentrate on technology, science and space to better human kind instead of short term goals of power causing all the bs wars.

Actually, this time, I don't really understand what you're raving about.

I'll let you live your petty life with your petty family, but maybe it's just me, but I think it's boring without knowledge of more. I'm not saying we NEED to know more, it's just cool.

What does the Collider have to do with Y2K, anyway? Or the year 2012? If it causes a black hole and sucks us all in during the year 2008, I'd say that's neither the year 2000 OR the year 2012.

Oh, yeah, and when they turn the Collider on this Wednesday, they're not actually colliding any two things together at this time. They'll only have one molecule in there, making sure it runs a straight path. Our impending doom has been delayed for another day. And who knows when that'll be?

I've kind of thought the mentality "WE DON'T CARE ABOUT THIS WE'D RATHER LIVE OUR NORMAL LIVES" is a rather silly one... So you want to live without having any sort of knowledge of how our universe began? The answers to such a question could give us an entirely new outlook on our lives, not to mention lead to other answers to questions that have plagued us since we were first able to think. You kind of give mixed messages here: on the one hand you obviously don't believe the LHC is dangerous, however you're also decrying the experiment for being a waste of time and that it will somehow interfere with you living the rest of your life.

And here's the thing; the LHC ISN'T smashing atoms today or anything, the event which people claim will bring about the end of the world. They're only firing the atoms off in one direction, not making them collider or anything. That doesn't happen until (if this all goes to plan I assume) the 21st of October, so all the Chicken Littles will just have to keep worrying until then.

Wow people, something that you mildly disagree with comes along and immediately Aussie is to be booted from TGWTG? Something that doesn't make you laugh appears and it's fire and pitchforks? Aussie didn't always just do game reviews, and Riz Raves are fresh. I enjoy seeing someone not reviewing something. It's different, and instead of saying how you haet him and he should be removed from the site, why not post a response? Why not do a video response in argument? All of this "You didn't do your research" is rather lax. After all, I couldn't explain this shit to a kindergardener, let alone someone in the field of science, but Aussie knows what's going on. He may not have slapped his PhD down, but you can rest assured that he knows what he's talking about. Don't like it, fine. Say it. But stop with all the flaming. If you disagree, say so, but adding "do your research" or "don't feature this" just makes you sound like a flamer. No one wants that.

I think the Y2K buzz was a little on the dumb side. That stuff was completely unfounded... speculation as it were.

However, as a lover of science I can't subscribe to the "I don't want to know" bit. I like the idea of trying to figure this place out. I mean, it's not necessary, but it's fun to know, ya know?

But I digress as I know you likely were only half serious with this. Even if I disagree I laughed at it. :3

The experiment does have to do with the big bang theory, but the main purpose is to find the missing links in the current models of matter and physics. It's pretty fucking important.

Hello there everyone that's interested.
I just register so I could comment on this video, by the way, you should upload more videos, your reviews are awesome!

SORRY FOR MY BAD ENGLISH, ANY MISTAKE PLEASE DO EXCUSE.

Well, without getting in details, I just want to say that my final thesis for graduation is being done at CERN, I'm currently working on the electronics behind the muon detector of ATLAS (one of the detectors on the LHC), but nothing big, it's important but it's like this: imagine your teacher telling you to do a work, one of those that you don't even know where to start but, of course, your teacher knows everything about it. Students at CERN like myself are, most part of it, people that do the work that scientists don't feel like doing, either because it's to a-b-c to them or they have bigger "fishes to catch".

Now, I have been reading and discussing a lot about the LHC these couple of days with colleagues/friends of mine, I have been at CERN working but for now my work can mostly be done at my home country. In the time I has there i had the chance to learn a lot about CERN and the LHC experiment and, not being a expert, let me just tell clarify some things:

1) Did you know that it was at CERN that the www was invented? Yeah, that www that you write in every single Internet page, was invented there. Read all about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Www#History

2) The BIG thing about the LHC is that it will allow scientists to found (or not) the boson of Higgs. The thing about it, is that this is the last basic particle (by basic I mean that it can't be divided) that's missing so that science may know all the basic particles in the universe. For what? Well, if he have all the ingredients of the universe, who knows what machines we can create? You may think that's nobody gives a shit (like it is said on the video) but experiments at CERN already gave 2 basic particles W and Z (read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C...hievements) and a lot more information that (with other scientific works of course) allow the elaboration of Plasma screen, cell phones (yes, cell phones), portable hard drives, 4-core processor, etc. If the LHC proves the existence of the Higgs boson (There's noting physical that proves the existence of such boson, only theory with a lot of "suppose that".) who knows what technological advance we will achieve!

(2nd part)

3) Concerning the Black holes that the impact of protons origin, yes they are true. BUT these black holes are so small (micro scale) that they quickly decay by Hawking radiation. Most people think that a black hole exists forever, if that was true, wouldn't the entire universe be swallow since the black holes grow with the amount of mass they suck in? Scientist Stephen Hawking proved that black holes also decay (like radioactive atoms), of course a big black hole can exit for millenniums, but micro black holes decay in micro seconds (seems logical xD)

4) The place in which the LHC experiments and detectors (ATLAS, LHC-b, ALICE, etc.) is build in such way that in case of an emergency it will not affect general population. You can see that on google earth if you want, but when i was there i felt like being in a concentration camp, in a way that there's noting near by, i had to walk about 20 minutes to get to a village. If you want an example, all nuclear power plants are build in such way that in an event of an earthquake, the part of the building that has the nuclear reactor is unaffected by the shaking. In fact, the safest place to be during an earthquake is a nuclear power plant smilies/wink.gif CERN facilities are build in such way, they know what they getting in to, they are not mad scientists (most of it smilies/tongue.gif) with a which to conquer the world, they just want to know how things work, and by doing that we (humanity) achieve great tecnological avance.

There's no such thing like End of The world or something like it, in fact the only thing the LHC is doing now is to send protons, register the impact and get the most amount of data possible. I may ask "hey, how can you be working at CERN if that's working already starting today?".Well, to better explain, imagine you have a car track with cars racing, but no referee. That's seems pretty stupid right? Well, you are simply testing the track, ith the LHC is the same, they are seing if the facilities can manage the amoung of impact, energy, protons, and all other parameters that i never heard about, BUT the FULL data that comes from each impact (particles create, speed, direction, momentum, etc.) is still to be collected, and it will be long before every detector is getting the data. In fact, most of the particles travel so fast that today electronics can't "catch" it. And more, the amount of energy produce in which collision it's about...2 Milli joules. MILLI! That's not even a joule! The difference is the SPACE in which such energy is, it's really small, so it's not the amount of energy that's big, it's the DENSITY.

What I have written it's not to be interpret "letter by letter", if you do own research you will find a lot more information with a lot more details on it. If you find it curious, just surf to the CERN homepage, all information is free to look at. Or, you can go to Youtube and type in CERNTV and search in channels, it's the official CERN channel with a lot of videos, most in 3D video that shows the building of LHC, ATLAS, and much much more. It's really good and fun to watch, not like being at a boring class. Even if don't understand the first thing about physics, you will understand all the videos because the language it's scientist-terms-free smilies/tongue.gif.

I hope i wasn't to boring, and now that i'm registed i will comment a lot more.
Cheeres to everyone!

written by Kuari , September 10, 2008
Honestly not sure what's going to happen... I think there is the possibility of a horrible global disaster occuring, but I don't think it will be the absolute end to the world. Now on the subject of LHC or whatever, there is no way they could generate enough power for a world destroying black hole.... yet... creating a black hole would be no small feat... now if they tried to make a weaponized version, then I'll pray for my life or that at the very least I die quickly...

I have a degree in physics, and I can tell you that this hysteria is complete rubbish. Has anyone noticed how not one credible physicist has come out against the LHC (and no, I don't consider Otto Rossler either "credible" or a "physicist". The thing that people seem to conveniently forget is that there are already numerous hadron colliders all over the world. The difference with this one? It's bigger.

There is no danger. I repeat, there is no danger. The only way this thing could possibly end the planet is if we were able to create an entire identical planet Earth out of anti-matter. It is not going to happen.

If science had always bowed to the will of the ill-informed mob, then we'd still believe that the world was flat. So shame on you, mass media, for peddling this sort of fear in the interests of more people buying your newspapers or watching your shows. And shame on you, Riz, who, as someone with an audience and a position of power chose to take your opinions on something you clearly know nothing about to the masses.

Perhaps before you start ranting, next time you should open a textbook first, and gather an informed opinion. Sure, it's a lot of hard work, but you'll look like less of a tit, so it's worth it in the long run.

I had a huge discussion about this between classes at college yesterday. After much debate we came to the conclusion that the world will not end, but the rift created in the space time fabric will lead to an altered physics that gives everyone super powers.

Read everything Unl1v3d said. He's obviously the person who has most knowledge about the whole LHC thing. I am no scientist but the whole thing about the world blowing up seems ridiculous, as Unl1v3d said, only micro black holes are being created and they dissipate in microseconds.

When it comes to asteroids, it's all about averages, we seem to think of time in different terms. To a planet, a year is nothing, to us it's a reasonable amount of time.

Basically an asteroid can hit earth, if the asteroid doesn't hit the moon or jupiter first (those two bodies usually take in any asteroids heading our way, jupiter because of it's huge gravity and the moon because it's very close and can act as a sheild). An asteroid could hit earth tomorrow or in ten thousand year or even in a million years. In terms of the solar system; That's a small margin, but to us that's too long to worry about.

As for the LHC, this all happened when the scientists said they could make a tiny black hole. The press went wild and had their fun to fill the gaps between the new wars and celeb babies. These black holes last less than a second and don't even have enough gravity to pull in dust let alone destroy the world.

And the LHC is actually vital in discovering the very origins of the universe, humans (by our very nature) are curious and our curiosity has created great things. Never ask why something must be investigated because it is always the people who looked into the way our lives and worlds came about that ended up creating our greatest inventions.

By the way they've already started work in the LHC (weeks before the "official" opening) to test it out. So the only thing we can look forward to is some great new scientific discoveries.

Why care
written by Ozz , September 10, 2008
I guess if there's even a 1 in 50,000,000 chance (there numbers not mine) that it could end the world, I would say they probably shouldn't be dinking are with it. Ultimately it’s a little hard to care, it doesn’t help any ones stress level to think about this kind of stuff and there’s nothing Joe and Jane average can do about this kind of stuff, frankly I’ll worry about death when I’m dead.

While I don't think it will destroy the world, the last thing we need is the basis for a weapon that are even more aggressive then a nuke and you know there’s at least one person out there thinking “how can I use this as a weapon?”.

The late, great George Carlin once said:

The very existence of flamethrowers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, “You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I’m just not close enough to get the job done.”

Curiosity may kill us, but I think our own aggression will get us sooner.

Long winded response, but well worth the read
written by Bagu , September 11, 2008
For my response, I have to say that no, I do not believe in this shit.
Here's why:
Cosmic rays have been hitting the earth for centuries, and at a much faster rate than the LHC is planning. And yet, we're all here. We're not going to die from it.
What the test they're after is for the presence of a particular element they have yet to been able to record. If it exists, then the big bang theory stands. Otherwise, it's back to the drawing board for science to think up new theories.
Why is that important for us to know? I don't know.
It's my firm belief that no matter how hard we try, we'll never know more than one tenth of one percent of anything.
About the 2012 end of the world prediction you touched on.
Also a load of BS.
The mayan calendar is actually an astrological calendar that plots the course of the sun as it travels through a procession of the astrological signs. If you look closely at a mayan calendar, you'll notice that it has 4 quadrants. Each quadrant has three signs. That makes 12 months of the year. Those quadrant dividers are marks for the equinoxes. When the sun is at it's shortest, or longest periods. This is because the planet is on a slow wobble around the sun, which makes december 22nd to 25th the shortest days of winter, and around two weeks into april, or easter, some of the longest days of the year.
In, or around 2012, the age of pisces will be over. This is the age we live in. An age is simply a marked roughly 2000 year time span. When pisces' age is over, it will begin the age of aquarius. That's it. That's all that's going to happen. The earth didn't come to a sudden end when the age of taurus ended, and it became the age of aries. It won't happen this time, either.

The LHC
written by kashmirxincx , September 11, 2008
OMFG THE LHC IS THE END OF THE WORLD!!! Ha JK. The LHC at cern is indeed, not a doomsday device. Simply put, for all the morons out there, there is simply not enough energy in the impact of two particles to sustain a, and I am quoting morons, "A black hole that will destroy all of existence". True, that it may, in fact, create small black holes, But with out proper sustaining energy, the exist for only fractions of a millisecond. and the funny thing is, they are smaller then an atom. There just is not enough energy to sustain a black hole here on earth, and how would you sustain a black hole that rarely pops up, and exist in such a micro scale, that you can barely denote it's existence? I can understand the concerns I guess. Because a good deal of people don't really know whats going on. CERN is a good and responsible organization, They are simply doing this to gain data that would be liken to what happened a millisecond after the "Big Bang". People, just calm down. People act like this is the first machine of it's kind. When in fact, America has it's own particle accelerator. It's not as big as cern's, but it does the same damn thing. It beats particles against each other at high speeds. you should really see what these machines do. google pictures of "Particle collisions" and look at the amazing, random, paths straying particles take. Really, even if you aren't a nerd, they are really cool.
