Welshy, I want to thank you. Your doing what James Rolfe did for me with other movie franchises: peeking my interest to go see them myself.
Were it not for you I would never have been interested in seeing the SCREAM or SAW films. You helped me rediscover my love for TREMORS and I really enjoy your NEW NIGHTMARE review. Thanks to you I've seen all 4 SCREAM films and now I plan on starting with the SAW films. I used to buy into the misconception that it's porn for sadomasochists (yeah for them, but that wasn't the original purpose). Really its people focusing too much on the traps more than the actual story (people did the EXACT same thing for another film).
Cheers from Tennessee.
P.S.-Don't feel bad about Anne Hathaway's marriage, I felt the same when Salma Hayek got married.

Couldn't have said it better. Welshy does a FANTASTIC job at analyzing these movies to the extreme. He has actually done nearly the impossible, because I used also think these movies were only torture porn, too. But now I actually want to want to see the Saw series now.
I can't imagine what your script looks like, Welshy. I'm sure it's the size of a dictionary now. This is seriously well written. Like a doctoral essay, practically. Not to mention how funny it is, with your knocks on other TGWTG members and the To Boldly Flee movie, as well.

11.09.2012 - 19:01 | marcelomontelloI make the "Billy" first, but anyway expand this to other series of films like Paranormal Activity (not that i like but the third one is kind like awesome) or make a retrospective os horror remakes something that noone reaaly get onto into!
You are doing a amazing job , keep Up!!!

The third Matrix film is actually my favorite movie, I’ve seen it at least 30 times, can’t wait to see an in-depth look at the films form some one who does such compressive reviews.
-
11.15.2012 - 13:02 | snoofulusI really like M3, as well, and it's got some amazing moments in it - but overall, I do think it was the weakest of the three, and obviously it doesn't really provide a "proper" pay-off to its predecessor.

As someone who can't watch the Saw films because of how squeamish I am (Ive only seen 3 and 6) I have to say this retrospective has really opened my eyes to the complexities of the franchise. Great retrospective, keep up the good work!

These retrospectives would be great if Welshy didn't stop to take shots at EVERYONE. Still, this is a good series of videos to show people that never watched Saw because they thought it was just torture-porn with no depth.

I just really wanted to take a few paragraphs to thank you for making this retrospective. I've always been interested in the Saw series, even though horror is FAR from something I really enjoy, especially when there's gore. I just can't watch it. It's not even a kind of scare that is fun for me; it just makes me totally uncomfortable and turns me off to the film entirely.
The thing is, I've always been aware that the Saw series has this interesting plot that has kept it's fan-base coming back through the years and even while I can't handle the gore at all, the concepts of the traps are fascinating to me too. It's just that there's been no way to really comprehend the plot short of actually watching the movies (as with how convoluted the plot gets, reading summaries on Wikipedia just does not cut it).
So yeah. I love this retrospective because I'm finally getting a feel for what the Saw series is about, as I've always, ALWAYS been so curious. And I really appreciate that you don't include all the gore. Like, you don't understand how much I appreciate that. I know you've been called out on that decision, but like, just know that there is at least one wimpy viewer out there whose day was MADE when you said in the first video that you wouldn't include the gore. Because it really did make my day.
Anyway. That's my piece. Your videos make me happy. And I'm glad that you're doing them. :)

11.10.2012 - 06:14 | Shadowstorm87xI love saw 5 but didn't care for 4 and 6. And god did I hate 7.

Thank you welshy for these. I'm too young to watch these (and I don't like gore)so your retrospective is a great way to know the story without having to read walls of text from wikipedia.

11.10.2012 - 09:27 | DevotedIdealAfter watching the series for the first time, Saw V was my favorite of what you call the Hoffman trilogy. To me, Saw's IV and VI faltered because they tried too hard to be complicated and most of the traps I thought were just dumb (especially the hair trap from IV and the first from VI, in terms of its execution). I still do think these factors hurt these films, but you did remind me of the crucial element that comes from IV, and that's the flashbacks of John's life before Jigsaw came to be. Maybe it's just how much you've been building it up, but from everything that you've said about VI (and remembering the satisfaction I had from its ending), I'm really looking forward to what you have to say about it and what you can bring to light. Just try not to take too long this time, ok? :P

11.10.2012 - 11:12 | MissKittyI don't really like the saw movies... I just like listening when you talk :D

I've really never had any interest in the Saw series, but watching your retrospectives and seeing how passionate you are about the series has made me want to give them a shot.
So, I guess once I've seen them, I'll know whether to thank you are call you an egotistical jerk.
(But, no, really these videos are great.)

I also find Welshy's elaborating on the films preferable to just referring to Wikipedia, seeing that I'm likely never going to see the films either. But what always leaves me curious . . . why the hell do they keep playing the tapes and DVDs? If they just made their way without paying any of the madman's clues any heed, they'd probably have a better chance of surviving.

11.10.2012 - 20:36 | CirrraOh thank goodness, I worried that something had happened to prevent you from finishing this retrospective. Thank you, thank you! You analysis continues to be top notch fascinating.
And yes, I am primed for VI now. Please, please, finish this. I agree with another poster that this is as good as any graduate doctorate thesis in theatrical arts.
Great Crow costume, too. :) Happy belated Halloween! (.....I don't think I have ever said that before.)

11.11.2012 - 19:41 | Cirrraeh, you know what they say about beliefs...the moment you start believing, that's when you stop thinking.
I take it that it has more to do with what facial features you're used to being around in your daily life, so you can see the nuances, while in another community, it is not so easy until you have more exposure and more practice.
But what you said isn't racist or anything. ;)

I did end up liking Hoffman a lot more then I ever thought I would after he was introduced.
While I didn't like 5 to much at first, I liked it so much more after 6.
I guess I was never a big fan of Amanda, and after that commentary track that revealed it was just a case of "I thought she was the hottest girl I'd ever seen watching Becker" as the primary reason for casting her/involving her so much...
Yeah, I started to despise her..

Welshy, I've only recently started tuning into your reviews, but I can safely say that I am becoming a fan. They are funny, interesting, and just cynical enough.
That being said, when's the next Saw review coming out?
Also, really looking forward to the Halloween retrospective (hoping you rip the remakes a new one).
-
12.12.2012 - 03:47 | furydeathLoving the saw review about the same reasons I live the movies so much tho, meaning while in December >.>
-
I Really REALLY want this to continue. Can't wait to see the next reviews. Nothing short of an emergency will quell my pestering for an update to this series.

01.18.2013 - 10:09 | DevotedIdealIt's been 2 and 1/2 months since this last Saw retrospective came out. Welshy, did you just fall off the face of the Earth or something? If you did, that would be rather unfortunate because I'm still waiting on those last two retrospectives :/ especially VI. You've built that up a lot and I was pretty excited to hear what you had to say about it.
-
01.23.2013 - 04:51 | Atticus23I have to agree with the comment above mine. It has been awhile and with only two films left, it is time to bring this retrospective to an end.
-
Like the others said its been 2 months! We miss these vids and it's just two more. Please upload the last two soon.
