Actually Todd, one rapper did have a guest verse on this song in America... Snoop Dogg... and it's like he didn't even listen to the context of the song before he wrote the damn thing!
He raps about how he actually went through the trouble of changing himself for this insufferable bitch, because he, for some damn reason, wants her back as well... *head explodes* Yes because that explains why in the song the ex boyfriend gets a new girlfriend... And doesn't come running back to his narcissistic ex...
The song itself, although bad, makes sense to me. Often times people want what they can't have, and it's not uncommon for someone to find someone else more desirable once they're taken ("I want what she has!" or "There has to be a reason why she wants him!"). Hell, I knew a girl who was furious when she found out her ex was dating someone else even though she broke up with him, because she just expected him to hang around for her... just in case. Actually, hearing a song from this selfish and bitchy perspective is kind of interesting. But once Snoop starts rapping it's like the whole premise of the song goes out the window, and only adds to the mess that already is this song.

Pop music, as in synthetic commercialized dross. Those bands are rock, alternative, punk and folk. Adele probably being the most commercially appropriate of the artists mentioned. Personally though I think Radiohead is vastly overrated; they had some decent tracks but I always felt they were just pretentious pseudo-progressive stoner music and Muse is just Radiohead-lite. I'm not a huge Beatles fan myself but I cannot deny their creativity and their contribution to music. The Clash and Zeppelin I'd have to agree with being good while maintaining popularity.
However if you want a list of some good popular American bands that are as good as or better than the bands you list -at least definitely better than Radiohead and Muse-, I'd say: REM, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, The Pixies, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Beck, Tool or The Doors just to name a few.
-
It seems you're mistaken. I believe Todd was comparing the WORST of America's Pop music to the WORST of British Pop music. The bands you listed don't qualify.
Personally, I think when it comes to the BEST stuff out there music-wise, the UK has the US beat by a significant margin. Just an opinion, though. What do you think?
-
10.15.2012 - 18:01 | flamingoman
It depends. Personally I think there's sort of an equal between the two. Especially since majority of what I listen to is progressive, rock and metal. There's a pretty equal number of damn good bands from both the US and UK. I will however say the UK has the US beat when it comes to metal. But if I had to be forced to pick I'd pick the US. Mostly because, I find that the very best music is progressive and the US has some of the finest progressive groups.
-
10.18.2012 - 18:11 | AaronageDownplaying Radiohead is a bit silly.
They're one of the most influential, consistently great bands of the last 20 years. Name any alt band, they will cite Radiohead as an influence. You can here it everywhere.
OK Computer and Kis A are two major big hitters, like Pet Sounds, Sgt. Peppers, The Wall, Unknown Pleasures kinda big. The sort of albums that people write thesis about.
I wouldn't say this about many bands, but if you can't "get" an album like OK Computer (or Kid A), you're not giving it the attention it deserves. "pretentious pseudo-progressive stoner music" it certainly isn't, give OK Computer a proper listen.

I don't see why. Influential or not I just don't find them appealing. To me they're kind of like the music version of Richard Kelly; interesting and talented but flawed at the same time.
I also don't find any of those albums (save for maybe Unknown Pleasures and The Wall) that interesting. I give the Beatles credit though for their creativity and because Sgt. Pepper helped create progressive rock.
It's not that I didn't "get" them, I just don't find the albums or the band that good. The themes the albums deal with are interesting but I just feel no connection with any of it. It's just so cold and clinical and it feels like it's trying too hard to be all "deep" and "meaningful".
It's just my opinion, and I'm not looking to offend or start an argument. (a discussion perhaps)

And if you don't particularly care for alternative..? I could tell you all day about how groundbreaking Scream Bloody Gore was, or how influential Atheist was on the technical death metal scene, or how every artist in every genre since has been affected by John Coltrane. Do you care for any of these acts? Unlikely.
The US and UK have always competed musically and have always come out roughly even. If one spits out a cool new genre, the other puts out a member in that genre that's very capable (Black Sabbath invents metal in the UK... then the thrash scene over ten years later erupts in America and changes the genre forever. Alternatively, America invents rock 'n' roll... then The Beatles and Led Zeppelin put new spins on those foundations).
You wanna know where to go? Continental Europe's underground.

Oh God, not the Cheeky Girls, NOT THE CHEEKY GIRLS!! Damn them, DAMN THEM TO HELL!!!
Speaking as a continental European, I would like to say that you'd do better to just ignore the Eurovision songfestival. None of that shit ever makes it on the popcharts and no one who watches that does so for the music. It exists in a world of it's own, despised by everyone who is not part of that world.
"Fairy Tale" was allright though.....
-
09.22.2012 - 11:04 | littleliliI thought the whole point of Eurovision was the fact it was cheesy and unlistenable. I mean this year wasn't too bad... there were some decent songs I enjoyed... And Eurovision did give us ABBA.
"Fairy Tale" was great, though it's completely inescapable whenever it's that time of year ago.

09.22.2012 - 21:05 | littleliliOh hell yeah, I was thinking that when he flashed the Finnish logo. "Hard Rock Hallelujah" was awesome. IDK I can spend hours discussing Eurovision and I'm an American... I blame it on getting into the contest in 2009 because of a Norwegian exchange student that I was hanging out with when her home land won.

Well, with the occasionally exception of a genuinely good song; which either only won because the performer was a former man, or finished about last.
Those blithering idiots wouldn't know good music if it hit them their collective asses.
Yes, the music on the song festival is so bad, even the people who usually push crap up the charts, won't buy it.

'Those blithering idiots wouldn't know good music if it hit them their collective asses.' Oh cheers.
I'm not sure if that refers to the UK, the Eurovision Song Contest specifically, or the whole of Europe, but it's bollocks. Everyone over here knows the Eurovision is filled with incredibly odd music, but that's part of the fun and my friends and I love it and watch it every year for its campy ridiculousness. It is also, I should point out, a chance for a lot of countries with very little home grown music to get a little recognition. Eurovision stuff doesn't tend to chart in the UK because we have plenty of home grown pop stars (whether they are actually good is irrelevant, they are still charting) along with a tonne of American stuff of course, but how often does Bosnia and Herzegovina (just one example) get any recognition? These songs are probably charting over there. And why the hell shouldn't they? The Eurovision also often sees interesting snippets of culture from these countries, and it's nice to hear music that is in some different languages.

09.21.2012 - 19:28 | accelgorsNice choice, because I absolutely cannot stand this song, and you covered pretty much everything I hated. (Also, that "I don't give a shit, no one else can have you" line is really creepy...)
In the worst of list I'm currently constructing, this ranks about #5. Just terrible. I hope she doesn't stick around - the UK can keep her.

Ouch! Good God, does this suck! How come every other review you do (i.e.: most of them not featuring the name Gotye) has me feeling sorry that you have to listen to such hideous dreck for a living?
On the plus side, all signs point to Jedward being at 14:59 of their allotted 15 minutes of fame (two failed Eurovision appearances, cameo in the Keith Lemon movie, etc.).

Also, I love the way this video ended. "You suck!"

I have been waiting on this review for SO DAMN LONG!
I was almost convinced I was the only one who had heard the song because no one else seemed to have any clue what I was talking about and when Todd went week after week after week without reviewing it, I started to crack under my apparent madness. But it is now here!
Excuse me while I make some popcorn and hit play.

Obnoxious Pixy, I've got to remember that term.
Terrible song, great review. I'll admit that Vida la Viva is a guilty pleasure of mine, but hearing that "rap" a few more times will make me hate it outright.
The date with Lupa went about as well as I expected, sorry Todd. Still, after seeing that date and Todd's "totally over her" mentality, I have a feeling that the Todd-Lupa-Nostalgia Chick love triangle is still alive.

I HATE this song! I haven't even seen the review yet and I need to say how much I LOATHE this song. It's on rotation at my job and I hear it at least twice per shift. And it's one that I can't ignore because her voice is so high pitched that it just slips into my mind, but the only part I actually know of it is "I want you back. I want you back. I want you back." Seriously, this song has invaded my nightmares and all I hear is "I want you back. I want you back. IwantyoubackIwantyouback. " I hate whining and all she's doing in this song is whining. Whenever it comes on, I can't help but think of a much better song about a girl who dumped a guy and wanted him back after she found out he moved on. It's called "Foolish Little Girl" by the Shirelles. Learn something, annoying British girl! Rip this one to shreds, Todd!
-
09.21.2012 - 21:13 | americo-russian-nerdweird. all the british music that i've ever heard was really good. then again, i manage to dig up bands/singers no one has ever heard of, and they all sound great.
Anyways, thank you Todd i have now been shaken out of my fantasy where i thought british music was better than american. i am now warned
no offense to the uk. u guys still have better tv shows (not reality tv, i mean stuff like Doctor Who)

Songs/movies/shows like these are absolutely reprehensible. Like, I'm surprised you could even find jokes for this one.
This is Deuces level of bad. This...THING is a god awful singer spreading a terrible message about how to be a shitty human being. And I fucking hate it when shit like this is directed toward an audience that, I'm sorry, IS better than this. I know it's easy to paint young people as the biggest mouthbreathing neanderthals on the planet, but they aren't. They're YOUNG, they aren't STUPID. And I'm sick of these corporations making the market so it looks like all their is is shallow stupidity, and I'm sick of said shallow stupidity influencing the young people that just need some better direction; direction from US/the ones who should be responsible for making the world a better place once they come into their own.
NOT fucking them over with horseshit like this. This is the worst song of 2012. NOTHING is going to beat the wretchedness of this.
