02.27.2012 - 03:23 | SaturnWow... first vote, if nothing else... I really like Jay-Z's part of the song. And even though I don't like Kanye at all, I still think he pulls through okay here.
-
Is it just me, or was this video a lot louder than normal? o.o
*shrug* Oh well. Anyway, I've never been much for rap or hip-hop, but I can actually dig this song...go figure.
Spot-on humor, by the way - I actually found myself pausing to get a good laugh out now and again. XD Love it when that happens!

Charles the Hammer is spinning in his grave.
They hired some hot chicks for this video.
8:15 Kanye's a goofy dancer. But so's Jay-Z after Todd's favorite line.
Rappers boasting about their clothes and jewelry has always struck me as gay rather than impressive. Might as well have a woman rap.
Also, fuck Kanye.

Very entertaining review although my distaste for Kanye and his general over-the-top douchebaggery just kills the song and any potential of being good it has. Yeah, I definitely liked Jay-Z's verse but it still perplexes me how the guy that made an anti-autotune song, is collaborating with an artist that is well known for using the very device Jay-Z seemed to despise. But, you know...I guess some people will do anything for money.
Also, you don't know how wide I smiled when I saw that Digital Underground reference. Do the humpty hump! =D

Oh my god! They're riffing themselves!
Anyway, I was kinda non-plussed by the song, as a rap song anyway. It does have some good moments, and like Party Rock Anthem, kinda works as a composition better.
I also concur with your evalutions of Jay and 'Ye, Jay-Z has been pretty sonsistently good throughout his carreer (not that there aren't a few songs I don't like), and Kanye is a good prooduucer, sometimes flies miles above other lyrically, and other times falls flat on his face.
Also, inb4 "durp, Todd's so right, rap sucks, I listen to real music like Metal!"

02.27.2012 - 06:32 | Matthew GGuys, I get that it's funny to make fun of retarded people, but saying Kanye West makes good music just crosses the line.

02.29.2012 - 15:44 | DangerousLokiIt's funny, when I first saw the title to this video, I didn't add to GGs but rather an NJ and turned it into Ninjas in Paris.. I was sorely disappointed when I realized that was neither the name of the song or what it was about. That song would have been awesome

02.27.2012 - 07:32 | littleliliWell he did reference that episode of South Park in "Gorgeous" from the My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy Album. The line was "Choke a South Park writer with a fishstick". So yeah...

02.27.2012 - 07:23 | littleliliWell I for one, as someone who is surprisingly into fashion find this song even more humorous because at Paris Fashion Week, Kanye's collection was basically laughed at. Anyways I saw these two live in DC last year, took one of my fellow affluent child of the DC suburbs with me and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. For real the two of these guys put on a really good show

Um, William isn't the Crown Prince. He's a prince, yes, but the title of Crown Prince goes only to the person next in line to the throne. Which he isn't. He's about 3rd or 4th, if memory serves.
-
02.27.2012 - 10:17 | An ExtraordinaryGentleman
He's second in line after Charles, who's probably anxiously waiting for his mother to die already so he can get whatever little time on the throne he can before William takes over.
Also, we don't use the term "Crown Prince". The heir apparent to the British throne is appointed Prince of Wales. William is currently the Duke of Cambridge.

I'm beginning to think that Kanye's tendency towards strobe lights and startling, musical effects are similar to Pink Floyd's. One of the band members in Pink Floyd is schizophrenic, so the strangeness of his creativity is perfection to him. Not saying that Kanye is mentally ill; but he must have some kind of unique perspective to come up with such sounds.
^^ Good review as always Todd!
-
02.27.2012 - 12:54 | Flaregun
I'm not sure what you're referring to here. Floyd founder Syd Barret was probably schizophrenic, but he only lasted one album and was out of the band by 1968 (admittedly even in those early Syd days the band was well known for their Psychedelic light shows, but I don't think they used strobe lights specifically back then, I don't think strobes were even commonly available for stage lighting in 1967). I actually checked all four other members who made up the band for the vast majority of their career, and there's nothing about any of them being schizophrenic.

02.28.2012 - 09:17 | singitjohnny
As Flaregun said, Syd Barret was the only member of the band with any sort of mental illness (although it's far more likely that it was a result of LSD overuse than a legitimate disease) and he was out of the band too early to influence anything like light shows or the more elaborate musical effects.
The most accurate parallel you could draw between Pink Floyd and Kanye West is the massive ego present in both Kanye and the long-time "frontman" of Floyd, Roger Waters.
Maybe what you really need to make creative, elaborate, critically acclaimed music is an ego the size of Jupiter.

Todd, I love all your videos. Yes I have seen them all. Probably more than once. I cant however agree with you on the Blades of Glory diss. Made people not like Will Farrel movies? My kids and I, and usually a few other people, come over and watch it at least once every couple weeks! Some of his best work IMO. How dare you. Haha, I guess its not for everyone:)
Keep up the great work and Kanye is a douche bag.

02.27.2012 - 08:41 | BaronGrackleTodd, I'm a huge fan. So understand that I'm smiling with you as I say this. :-) Let's look back at that Cee-Lo song you had at the top of your list a little while ago...
You HATED the idea that it showed up on so many stations as "Forget You", the lame censored version. Well keep in mind that the original version of that song includes the "N-word" in its lyrics. This was among the words censored in the radio version, and the word is likewise censored here in your video. I don't blame you at all for it; I agree with you for censoring it. But, that's just something to keep in mind.

@barongrackle- I don't know why you can't figure this out yourself, but seeing as the n-word has a history of use to abuse black people, it has a significantly larger taboo behind it than 'fuck' does. When a word has that kind of associations behind it you have to be very, very careful. The word fuck is merely a strong swear word (and also a noun and verb to mean sex, I guess). It doesn't have the same associations. JZ and Kayne are using the n-word because it has been largely reclaimed and is used a lot by black rappers, but anyone who is not black should tread extremely carefully around that particular word, as Todd rightly does here.

I'm not American, neither I am black, so I will never understand the obsession around the so called N-word (especially given that it has two possible counterparts in my language of which only one could be considered a racial slur) but in this instance I can't understand possible problems.
As long as it's not a joke, all instances of self-censoring word "nigga(s)" in the review are baseless. I can see black people not liking the term since it has derogatory connotations and historical context that makes it offense. On the other hand they are often portrayed as using without resevations in fiction (I know it's not reliable source, but movies and similiar media are my only true contact with black people sub culture).
Anyway, whoever would protest use of word Nigga by Todd in this video would have to be quite stupid and in case of feeling offended should direct his protest directly to arists.
But hey, I don't have to deal with PC paranoia on day to day basis, so what do I know?
-
02.28.2012 - 01:14 | PlayMp1
It's an American thing. Basically, it's the concept of N-word privileges - only the people that the word was used against, historically, are allowed to use it without social retaliation. Hopefully, the same will happen for gender and sexuality based slurs.
In America, we have a nasty history of human rights abuses against blacks, so anyone that's not black chooses to self-censor that word because of its historical connotations - especially if you're white.
Todd, as I recall, has said in some vlog or Nostalgia Chick thing that he "may be of the Asian persuasion," so he could probably get away with saying one of those slurs if he stated his ethnicity, but that's just part of his whole kayfabe :P.

"On the other hand they are often portrayed as using without resevations in fiction (I know it's not reliable source, but movies and similiar media are my only true contact with black people sub culture)."
Well then, perhaps you should shut up and leave the debate to people who actually know what they're talking about.

02.27.2012 - 09:52 | frecelWhen I saw the title I was hoping that it would be "Ninjas in Paris". That would be much cooler song.

God, the amount of times "that shit cray" followed by a "what she order" is said between my friends and all ... we should be ashamed.
However, I totally agree. Even with the cheesiness, I really enjoy this song. A lot.
Awesome review, 5 stars given for just getting the keyboard right (and that was before all the awesome jokes!)

02.27.2012 - 09:58 | pkingdomThat scream at the beginning of the song...that's the sound of Pikmin dieing! No, I'm not kidding, that is the sound Pikmin make when they die in the Nintendo game!
