08.30.2011 - 23:51 | AuroneI agree with you Todd, it truly is depressing, not only how MTV has fallen but how even simple heavy Rock has been shoved out of the lime light.

What did we expect, I guess? Youtube and facebook and all the other online communities have taken over from where MTV was 10/15 years ago.
I mean, did you hear who won the movie awards? Twilight, Twilight, Twilight, Harry Potter, Twilight, Twilight, Twilight, Justin Bieber, Twilight!
They're just desperately trying to get whatever attention they can from the youth of today because they know how little MTV matters anymore. It's like watching Indiana Jones jump out of that fridge over and over and over again, Ad infinitum. Sad.

Wait, what? Did you say Twilight? Twilight? Fucking Twilight? How the fuck does Twilight win anything other than "worse script in the history of the universe"? And yes, I'm including Highlander: the Source in that assessment. That movie only raped the Highlander franchise. Twilight raped the Paranormal fiction GENRE. A GENRE!! And I'm not using that as an insensitive over-exaggeration by using the descriptive term rape. Twilight VIOLATED AND TRAUMATISED that genre for at LEAST the next 15 years. It is going to take a long while to recover from the evil that Stephanie Meyer inflicted on the world.
HOW THE FUCK DOES FUCKING TWILIGHT WIN A FUCKING AWARD???
I'm so sorry for ranting at here, but how? How? HOW????!!!!
asdfksdfas09dfu9238310923 12342341!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!
I have... no words...
... I'm going to go cry now. George Orwell could never, in all his dystopian predictions for the outcome of the human race, imagined this...

I'm not really old enough to remember when MTV played music videos (I'm 18) and it STILL pissed me off that they don't play music anymore. Yeah, they play videos at like, six in the morning, but it's just not the same. Plus the quality of shows took a leap off a cliff. I will admit I kind of enjoyed Cribs and Pimp My Ride, but all they have now is complete garbage that shouldn't even exist.

I say the MTV awards died around the same time as the Academy Awards. Remember the time when Billy Crystal hosted that? The only award show worth watching anymore is the World Magic Awards.
On that note, Cartoon Network's daily line-up died too! And Discovery Health got bought out by Oprah!! D: And Scrubs is fading out!!! Stargate was canceled!!!! TV IS DYING!!! D: D: D:
Oh goodness, I remember when MTV was music all day, I feel old T_T

Xena I think i'm gonna have to disagree with some things you just said. Now I will agree that MTV is not what it used to be but that does not mean that all tv is bad. First, You say that the Oscar awards is unenjoyable, I still watch it and not even that bad. Second, you say that the shows on Cartoon Network today sucks? Have you even seen the amazing world of gumball, Adventure Time, Regular Show, MAD, and the Looney Tunes show, those show are good. Third, you complain that Oprah brought Discovery Health, who the hell cares. It's part of business, you complaining about it is pointless. Fourth, you're upset that Stargate and Scrubs got canceled? Get over it and move on with something else. Look, I don't want start a war with you but I suggest you think before you start acting like a nostalgiatard. Good day.

I agree, Todd. As a child of the 80s, I grew up in the heyday of MTV. I remember when it meant something. God only knows why MTV even has a music awards show anymore. I think that they really just need to drop all the reality TV crap, and get back to their roots. They need to become MUSIC TV again. I think people WILL watch it. Then maybe people will give half a crap about the Music Awards.

08.31.2011 - 00:15 | SixSeven83The 1st time I watched the VMA's it was the '91 Award Show.
There were so many great acts on that show.
Prince
Metallica
LL Cool J
Mariah
GNR
Van Halen
The destruction of Poison on live TV!
That was the 1st time I actually saw Metallica because I watched the show to see Prince and was blown away by them at 8 years old.
MTV and the VMA's have falllen HARD!
-
08.31.2011 - 00:15 | Steve PotterDidn't watch it last night. I'm glad I didn't. I actually liked How to Love, but I can see your complaints with it. Also, just listened to "Make It Stop" by Rise Against. Haven't seen the video, but the song is miles beyond "Born This Way."

The MTV Music Awards are just over hyped, really fixed, and stupid as hell. The Old MTVVA's were awesome!!! Artists like Herbie Hancock and Neil Young won awards (as well as other artists who were acually artists), and the broke boundries. But not, it just seems repetitive.

Haha, the whole time I was "watching" the vmas I was hoping you were going to do a vlog on them XD Thank you TODD! the entire thing was awful... i remember when G4 had games.. I remember when MTV played music. I remember when MTV2 played music. I remember when cartoon network only played cartoons... and the VMAs mattered... ahh the golden days of 5-6 years ago .... worst part of the night: Bruno Mars doing a cover of an Amy Winehouse Cover... Amy Winehouse had an amazing jazz voice, but she was plagued with addiction problems and we lost a talented voice way too early, then Russel "Fuckhead" Brand comes out and tries to do "comedy" while giving a few words about Amy... and why Russel Brand anyways? Because they are both british?
-
08.31.2011 - 10:08 | littleliliI thought it was because they were both British and at one point Russel Brand was also an addict... and they both look like hot messes...

It greatly saddens me to see how much of a nonfactor the VMA's have become.
Yeah, all I kept hearing throughout the VMA's was that Beyonce was pregnant. And just like that, nearly every douchebag on Twitter said "It's Jay-Z's 100th problem! Hardy har har! Aren't I teh clever???" No...it's not clever when thousands of people are saying the same thing.
Yeah, as much as I can't stand Lady Gaga's music, I totally agree with you. MTV needs her and performers like her right now. We're not living in the age of Michael, Madonna, and Britney anymore. Lady Gaga and Justin Timberlake are the last two great performers left.

Aw, no reference of Tyler, the Creator. That was the one thing I thought was great about the VMAs, that a new artist that's something different actually got recognized. And "Yonkers" has a deceptively simple video to boot.
Well anyway, I share your pessimism. I didn't watch the VMAs, but apparently, Beyoncé baby belly set a new Twitter record for most tweets per minute on a single topic. Something like over 6,000. That's something special, right?! ...Right? :(

Yeah, neither MTV's awards nor my country's Muchmusic awards mean a hill of beans. Probably has a lot to do with the fact that we haven't been either's target demographic for quite some time now.
Hell, at least Muchmusic still plays music videos. A lot of them suck, but sounds like you Americans have it worse.
Justin Bieber beat Cee-Lo, huh? Not a surprise, but a disappointment.
Well to be fair to the kid, he's Canadian like I am. Having our own aforementioned flagship station does still play them kinda resulted in us paying way less attention to MTV, even when it was decent. He does pop up quite a bit on Much, at that.
Yeah, I'm pretty baffled by everybody pretending Chris Brown is a big deal, but much like you I always thought he was a pretty forgettable dude, even before the whole incident.
Anyway, I've already pretty much written a book here, so nice video Todd. While it is sad to see something once respected spiral like this, s'the way it goes.
Edit: Ok sorry, I can't let this go. Hey Chris Brown, Wu-Tang Clan ain't nothin' to fuck wit, and don't forget that you little pisser.
-
I didn't watch the VMAs because I don't have MTV, and I frankly do not even give a million shits about them either way. I never knew Lady Gaga had a drag image going, but why does she have one?
Yeah MTV, you were so awesome with Beavis & Butt-head, Celebrity Deathmatch, but now it's just reality shows 24/7. Music TV? Media TV? Change you the M in MTV to RTV.
-
Jesus, I haven't watched MTV since Aeon Flux & Liquid Television went off the air. Not really things little girls should be watching, but.... Also haven't watched VH1 since they got rid of Pop Up Video.
Nickelodeon started sucking in 2004. Sci-Fi hasn't shown anything good since the late 90s. Even Discovery Networks is loosing their integrity with all the religious/haunted/UFO/ psychic BS that has nothing to do with the channels they're they're on. & now we've got Cartoon Network showing more & more nonanimated programs.
My Super Sweet 16; the only reason people watched it was for the song that plays at the roller skating rink.

TV in general just sucks.
I can think of so very, very few things that make me want to turn on a TV, and those that do are just things I can find online and watch whenever I want.
Meanwhile the internet has stuff like That Guy With The Glasses, worthwhile stuff to watch nearly every day, most decent TV channels now host their shows on their own websites, hell, some are moving over to YouTube, which is also getting a fine roster of shows I watch on there pretty consistently.
And that's just stuff you can watch, there's also written articles about basically everything under the sun, music videos both official and unofficial (and if you're still 13 you'll find unofficial stuff cool), games as far as the eye can see, all free, and more than a fair few better than those stupid FPS's they're asking you to spend $60+ to buy in a store.
TV as a medium is never gonna die, but it's also never gonna be as relevant as it used to be because all the money as gone over to the internet, literally in my case as I've stopped paying for all TV services in my house, means I'm occasionally missing out on those few shows worth turning a TV on, but I can live with it when I get so much more elsewhere.
-
08.31.2011 - 21:40 | j4w3zYou say that tv will never die jet your another person whose House does not have tv service I don't have tv in my house either and I know a few other people who don't have tv either tv is just not whorth paying for anymore

As a tween MTV was perhaps my favorite channel. I watched Total Request Live everyday and my parents and older sister would all watch Daria together. It's strange how the music video industry has transitioned to YOUTUBE...and yet, GAGA really showed her skills last night. And hey, the VMAs are still muccch better than the MTV Movie Awards......FUCKING TWILIGHT.

It really saddens me of what MTV has now become. I was born the same year MTV debuted (Man, that exposed my age big time.)and the music video they put out was the soundtrack of my life from childhood to my teenage years.
Every year, I would look forward to the VMAs and when I watched them, they didn't disappoint.
Now that I see the VMAs, it turned out like the MTV Movie Awards...But worse!
There was a time that the VMAs mattered and I watched the shows that did mattered and had a great time watching it. Now, it's all gone now and it's pretty sad to be honest.
-
08.31.2011 - 01:27 | EP.PixelsI forgot the VMA's existed. Hand on heart.
-
08.31.2011 - 01:53 | KirinetI don't think I watched MTV since around 2004, whenever I turned on MTV there was never any music on, so I switched to VH1 for a while, until that kind of went to sit with infinite promos and barely any music in between.
Now I just go on websites and set my own playlists of genres I want to listen to.
I guess back in the 90's and early 2000 I kind of took it for a fact that there'll be a channel that only plays music, as there's a demand for it.
Did that really ever change? Isn't there already a "reality TV" channel somewhere? The administration at MTV needs to change pronto, otherwise I don't think that channel would survive when it's audience grows up and hits 13.
-
08.31.2011 - 01:59 | LordNiftyI am annoyed with what MTV has become, but I think it has a lot to do with what the music scene has become. MTV does have channels that play music videos, and interestingly enough, to me at least, I have actually discovered new artists I like on channels like mtvU. I have to put up with a lot of artists I didn't like so much to get to them, but that was the case for MTV in its heyday.
However, there are a lot of good music internet sites, and if I hear a song I like, or even hear of a song I might like, it can be accessed rather quickly, and I can decide for myself. Think about the great number of highly talented artists you have heard of recently, and compare it HONESTLY to the number of great artists you heard of during the 80s and 90s. So there is a good music scene out there; it just depends more on word-of-mouth, and that is not necessarily a bad thing.
-
08.31.2011 - 02:06 | MischalaniouseFrom your description it sounded like an absolute farce. But then, what isn't these days?
-
08.31.2011 - 02:07 | YeahwhateverOnly thing that mattered about the VMA's....
The new Beavis & Butt-Head episodes got an official release date and a 12 second trailer.
That was literally the only thing worth watching it for.
-
08.31.2011 - 02:21 | damnitscloudy
Rock has lost its way in the last decade. There are good bands out now but nothing that brings everyone together. Everyone is splintered off into different genres, like alt rock, country-rock, classic rock, nu metal, classic metal, rap, hip-hop, gangsta, etc. While I like Phoenix and Mumford and Sons, I don't see them bringing together all the rock fans.
Music needs another revolution like Nirvana, Metallica, or even Elvis!
-
09.04.2011 - 17:08 | MarinerDude, genres aren't the reason we don't have "inclusive" music. That's a function of how unconscious *society itself* is today.
The Music Television has fallen...quite far...
