I can't wait till Todd does the one hit wonder on "The Thong Song". Not because I wanna hear all about Sisqó, but that he will have to talk about the group he was in that I listened to all the time when I was younger, Dru Hill.

The best R&B group in my opinion. If you don't believe me search Dru Hill - Beauty

Sorry to disappoint, but "The Thong Song" wasn't Sisqo's only hit. In fact, his follow-up single "Incomplete" actually went to #1 in the US (unlike "Thong Song" which peaked at #3) & was one of the 25 biggest songs of the year then, according to Billboard. "Got to Get It" also cracked the Top 40 at #39, adding another minor hit. So alas, the tale of Sisqo & Dru Hill will not be told (on One-Hit Wonderland, at least).

I've never heard of "Incomplete". And besides, Todd has covered plenty of bands who had more than one hit, but the general definition of "one hit wonder" is someone who is only widely known for one song. I think Sisqo fits into that rather nicely.

Besides, who wouldn't wanna see him tear apart The Thong Song?!

Well... you got me there. Although I as very surprised that you decided to cover Float On, and probably should've suspected this for three reasons : you didn't specify whose song it was like you usually do, as you said, Modest Mouse aren't generally considered a one-hit wonder, and, if I recall correctly, Float On never actually broke the top 40, (it peaked around #70 if I'm not mistaken) so doesn't even qualify as a “hit” according to your definition. Still, this was a great prank, especially since you've never done one before and even stated that you never will.

    Well played, Todd, well played.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFF---Well played, Mr. In the Shadows...well played...

I too was wondering why you'd cover Modest Mouse on here, but it would appear you gave us an April Fools surprise a day early.
  • Vercalos
Heh. I think that the Sesame Street parody sounds better than the original.
  • The Brad Guy
Agreed. The Sesame Street parody is much catchier, and unlike The Floaters, these guys clearly are in on the joke.

Plus they actually wrote a proper chorus for it. If you didn't know this was the song it was parodying, you'd probably be surprised to finally hear it. It's almost more of a parody in the way "Dog Eat Dog" by Weird Al is a parody of "Once in a Lifetime" or "Mr. Popeil" is a parody of "Rock Lobster" - i.e. not really at all besides the style and a couple of suspiciously similar lines.
  • OutsiderMiracles
You should get on that Todd. Hmmm, I wonder if it works via text as well? Taurus, My name's Maria, and I like a lady who's Wild and chaotic, if you match that description... um... reply?

I hear this on the radio all the time, especially at work. I hate it so much.

I'll be eating a sandwich in the break room and then all the sudden I hear Larry pop on.

So what you're saying is, you have bad taste in music.

I'm pretty sure she's saying the exact opposite of that. She may also be saying that they love cheesy run of the mill 70s soul at her workplace.
  • Renaissance Nerd
I'm apparently at that awkward age where I'm not old enough to remember the original song but I am old enough to remember it being parodied on Sesame Street. We're a demographic. We need to be pandered to more!

Can't say that I was fooled, but well done, nonetheless!

I remember this. My first year of college. And Franz Ferdinand appeared shortly after. And Polyphonic Spree.

Crap! You got me! You really got me!

    That was amazing!

Oh man you got me. Good one.

The Floaters? How can I resist writing five more jokes to go with that name:

    5. "Ooooooh! Fat Bastard left a floater."
    4. "Well, it's better than their previous name: dropping bombs over Bagdad."
    3. "Their name does not in fact allude to the quality of their music...not entirely, at least."
    2. "If the Floaters's songs seems like watered down versions of other songs, take some Pepto-Bismol."
    1. "After listening to their songs, you should wash your hands."

Damn it. You got me... mostly because it's not even April yet. I was looking forward to a Modest Mouse episode. Float On is one of my favorites.
  • Emilie Bennett
A little early for April Fool's, isn't it? But this song sounds rather quirky, and I like quirky stuff.
  • Thanatosia  - Float On
Haha, if anyone listens to Adam Carolla, he's fairly recently been having a runnign bit based on the Floaters for a while now with Jo Koy and his 'Bung Lo Tsu' character - the Chinese Floater.

Well, at least Float On SOUNDS like a good song (that is, if you ignore the lyrics). Whereas nowadays, bad songs are simply bad songs through and through.

    Aries... My name is Rob.

I've been watching Sliders on Netflix and this group reminds me a bit of Rembrandt Brown aka The Crying Man from it. Just kinda the smooth soul singing.

I can't believe I started watching this video 2 minutes after midnight.. on April 1st.

And yeah. I fell for it. Hard. At least I got a heads up for when I wake up. Thanks Todd! :)

    Gemini/Cancer...aw, screw it.

Speaking as someone who grew up in the '70s -- yes, Todd, you've got early GenXers/late BabyBoomers watching you -- yes, horoscopes & announcing your sign really were that big a thing in the '70s. "What's your sign" was a pick-up line, usually asked even before "what's your name?". Yeah. Seriously.

Not that things are any less stupid now, but you have to admit, the '70s did big, gloriously cheesy songs RIGHT.
  • darkdude13
I think Todd should do this is not the end the song for the trailer the edge of tomorrow

Well Todd, you got us... Even if it's March 31st. ;P

The modest mouse song is a classic, but this... Thing... I think I prefer the more funky 70s offerings, in contrast to this really lame smooth ballad crap. Maybe I don't hate it as much as, say, folk music or modern hip hop, but it isn't anything I'd EVER listen to, that's for sure...

What's wrong with folk and modern rap?
  • HMorris73
    I prefer Dashboard personally.

Oddly enough this isn't the first time I've heard the original song and sadly yes some radio stations play them at least as far as I know in Michigan.

I'm glad to see this was just an early April Fool's video. Also happy to hear Todd loves the Modest Mouse song as much as I do. The song originally came out during a traumatic time in my life (I lost a good friend in a car accident), and this song (MM's "Float On") was very therapeutic for me.

Whoa. My coworker likes to put on an old school radio station, and it actually plays "Float On." "Cornball" is just the right word for this!

Oh man. My friends and I used to whip this one out on Karaoke from time to time, substituting our own zodiacs, names, and... y'know... vague criteria for potential mates. Good times. :)
