Oh my god, YES. I've been hoping you would cover this song on OHW. This show is so awesome, and so are you, Todd! :D

Great review, one hit wonderland's one of my favorite parts of the site :) Have you ever thought about doing one about Randy Newman and his 1978 hit "Short People"? I'm a huge fan of his and even I have to admit there seems to be just as much to mock about him as there is to praise.

Randy Newman is not a one hit wonder. He's done lots of other songs like "Mr. President have pity on the working man" and lots of movie themes like "You got a Friend in me" from Toy Story.

Actually, "Short People" was his only Top 40 hit, and I can't help but feel that most people really only know Newman as an artist nowadays because of the Family Guy and South Park parodies of him.

Bottom line is that he is a very talented and gifted songwriter who wrote about extremely controversial subjects and who's time in the mainstream was much shorter than he deserved. This series was made for artists like him.

Did none of his Toy Story stuff chart?
  • 2011didnothingwrong
In my opinion, he should do "The Reason" by Hoobastank. I know he put that on The Top Ten Worst Hit Songs of 2004, but having listened to some of their other songs - they're a lot better than Creed, Linkin Park, or Nickelback - they'd make a pretty good episode of One Hit Wonderland.

Oh, Sweden. For every fantastic metal band you produce like Opeth, Grand Magus or Spiritual Beggars, you make four hyperactive Europop groups that explode and fade.

Don't know why, but whenever I hear this song, I think of Gary's Mod & people Bollywood dancing at a wedding.

You know, Korean bands seem to work that way too. Dance group Koyotae has burned through 3 sets of male singers. The only thing that even makes the band still Koyotae is that Shin-Shi never left.

    I don't like the woman's voice...Kinda ear splitting.

Todd, I'd ask you do do O-zone (Ow zahn), seeing as they only had 1 hit in the US, but seeing as they're Europop AND a boyband, two things you would hold against them, I don't think you could do an unbiased review of them. You're free to prove me wrong. Personally I think that together & solo they had some surprisingly good music.

    @LikaLaruku
O-Zone? The band that did "Dragostea Din Tei", or as I and everyone else knows it, "Numa Numa, that song that a fat guy lip synced and got like a billion views on YouTube for"? Other than it being entirely in Romanian, that would be freaking brilliant.
  • Steve the Pocket

Problem: "Dragostea din Tei" was never actually a hit in the US, at least not by Todd's definition: it never cracked the Billboard Hot 100, let alone the top 40. It probably got more hits on Newgrounds than airplay.

The Cotton Eyed Joe song was all OVER the local country stations that year while I was in high school. It even featured prominently in that year and subsequent years' proms (along with Rocky Top, another prom staple. Ah, rural schools...) I wonder if they're still playing it.

But I really agree Todd the only reason I even liked that song was because of the original which is still a great bluegrass staple. I always just tuned out the added part that woman sings lol.

And the most hilarious part of their whole 'redneck' look (at least the majority of it, they didn't look too bad in that football video) is that is honestly does look like people from outside the US who actually knows nothing about hillbilly culture's interpretations of that culture lmao. Somebody shoulda showed them an episode of Hee Haw at least.

You forgot to mention their cameo in "Barnyard: The Original Party Animals."

I think it's funny how I commented about Rednex on your last OHW and now it's the group you're reviewing. I don't know if it's a coincidence or if you took it as a suggestion. Most likely the former.

I don't like bluegrass, and a techno beat makes it a little more tolerable, but still not for very long. I wouldn't be able to listen to too much of it. Some weird shit certainly has come out of the Eurodance craze and I think this is one of the toppers. I think I remember this playing at school dances.

If you are taking suggestions for One Hit Wonderland episodes, I have another suggestion. I know you cover artists that only had one hit on the American pop charts, but how about doing a One Hit Wonder on the Canadian Pop Charts? I just remembered a song recently called 'No Means No' by Ricky J and it was his only major hit in Canada. He never had a hit anywhere else, to my knowledge anyway. It came out around 2000 or so and is about a guy trying to get some action from a girl who won't let him. It was on my Planet Pop album and needless to say my mom didn't really care for me listening to it when I was 11 and 12 years old. The video is also a bit cheesy, (though the song itself is cheesy enough). I'm sure you'd get plenty of material to work with.

I hear this song all the time. I can't tell if I find it annoying or fun.

I loathe that song. Cotton Eye Joe is worse than nails on a chalk-board... And now it's stuck in my head. Thanks Todd.

    Doctor Bombay was awesome!

And this one too, back in the day, when we all huddled around the audio cassette player, this was greatest song!

Now, do an episode about the Macarena. *Evil Grin*

Also, thanks for introducing me to Doop by Doop via Twitter, couldn't stop listing to that song for the whole night. XD
  • Lovemusician
As usual this was a fun and great review. I remember this song and it was catchy and annoying at the same time.
If I could give a suggestion for One Hit Wonderland I think a good song choice for this is the 90's one hit wonder Walking in Memphis by Marc Cohn because I think it could bring good conversation and Butterfly by Crazy Town because it would be fun to make fun of this band.
  • Korruk
Huh. Didn't know they made that many different songs. I remember almost all of the songs you played and even kind of liked them.
It's not really my kind of music but I still remember not turning the radio off when the played.

I loathe this song. I honestly never heard about it until the seventh grade dance. I thought it was stupid. I still think it's stupid and awful and now that I know it's origins, I hate it even more. I don't know, it just seems offensive that the very exaggerated way they are portraying red necks. I mean, I'm not a red neck, but I'm sure they're not like....whatever the hell Red Nex is. So thanks Todd for the info. I hope that whoever buys Red Nex, does so just to make sure they never make music again.

I remember this song, they played it and the dancing move at my Middle School Dance, (made sense since I went to a rural small town school, because it was "in and popular" at the time it was the only country music song we would allow the DJ to play) I didn't mind the song itself.

It was a funny catchy little tune, but I hated the dance move, it really made no sense, it was complicated, most dance moves gave you a second to get the routine down, this one always humiliated me because I kept screwing it up when I failed to get the hang on it.

    Good video Todd. :)

Todd definitively needs to do an episode about Mecco.

I remember seeing an interview with these guys on MTV back in the day and thinking "Yeah,if these guys are Rednecks I'm a New Zealander tobacco farmer"...

You're annoyed by this portrayal of Americans? I wish you could and would try being a German, French or any other kind of Non-US-American watching US-American media for a day.
  • Mischi
Yes, I second that. It seems
every stereotype is hysterical, up until they
    pick on YOU.
And then you liked the one where they sing:
Hey amma hey ya ho, now we'renative americas Hugh.

There are subtleties in this that Todd never brings up but, to oversimplify, think of this as the all white equivalent of a minstrel show.

Do you mean that it in the sense that it provides subtle social commentary? If so, what social commentary?

Well like he pointed out, at least they didn't actually dress up as Native Americans for that one.

If there was one band that I would assume didn't have anything interesting about them other than the hit, it would be this one. I'm a bit surprised at what you did find.

Rednex was a huge hit in Russia. I don't know why, but it's true. Still if someone threw a party in 90 style in Russia, there would be some Rednex songs. For example, in 2011 St Peterburg was hosting this kind of party, and Rednex had a performance there.

I'm fairly sure people of the united states lost the right to complain about being stereotyped a looong time ago. The whole concept of Todd bitching how "aw man this is offensive to rednecks" was just funny, and I don't think in the way he intended it to be.

Yeah, not much fun when someone else is doing the joking and over-the-top voices is it?

As for the song - Eh, it's kinda shit. I like listening to it from time to time, and after this review I think I can go for around two more years before I feel like I want to listen to it again.

Without a doubt, Cotton Eye Joe is a guilty pleasure of a song. One of those foot-stomping, can't help but get into it type of tunes you can't resist. It's in your face and yet so addictive and FUN. A true example of a One-Hit Wonder. But as Todd noticed, that's the problem when you try to stretch that One Hit to cover so much of your other work: it backfires. Badly. And you turn into a one trick pony.

Alas, poor Rednex. We knew them well.

ha, ha, my brother-in-law is a redneck, he lives in town but owns goats and chickens and drives in a s10 truck that has conservative propaganda bumper stickers.

He also wear cowboy boats all the time, but he doesn't wear a cowboy hat he does wear glasses though.

My best friend loves this song and actually talks about the band Rednex every once in a while. I sent him the link to this video.

Also this song is great to play on Dance Dance Revolution.
  • Captain Siberia
Put some compression on your voice. It'll help it stand out better against the music bed. It gets lost in there sometimes.

"I guess they were smart enough to stay out of the video and not put on any headdresses themselves and start whooping out a war chant, thank god." Unlike:
