One of these days I have to find out who or what is the driving force behind the subtexts...
One day it will try to take over the world.

Believe it or not, I actually saw Monster Mash (the movie). I remember renting it at my grandparent's cottage when I was a little kid - and even THEN it was boring and I hated it. In short, it's pretty much Rocky Horror for young children.

    Yeah. Let THAT sink in.

Always hear this song at the most random of moments. Or in the most odd places. But its okay. Also Like the Bob reference haha.

You're the best on the site. Keep up the good work.

This song needs to be usurped by some other silly inoffensive song about a monster.

Somebody tell Andre 3000 to re-release "Dracula's Wedding"
  • Ankai
The intro made me think of "Someone Like You" by Adele instead of "Monster Mash".
  • 9ansean  - A very fun and insightfull video
I found the Little Darlin' reference ironic since Boris Karloff performed his own version of the Diamonds song in skit for the Dinah Shore show. Five years before the Monster Mash was even released apperently!
Unlike the Bobby "Boris" Pickett version however, this one survives:

Huh. Well, maybe that's what inspired Pickett to do a Karloff impression when his band performed it! It makes more sense than just randomly deciding to do it.

Ah, The Monster Mash...one of my personal guilty pleasures at Halloween parties. I'm such a kid at heart!

Aww man. I thought by the title card Halloweenie was gonna be in it.
  • yarnhooker
I thought that too! Not that his review is bad without him in it, I was just interested to see what Halloweenie would have done had he been in it.

He was born in 1938, and he was in Korea? How did that get past the recruiter?

It doesn't mean he was in the Korean war. He would have only been 12 when that started. He could have been stationed later. The US still has an army base in South Korea today.

I find it funny that you did a video on this mostly because my Social Dance teacher has taught us the dance. I'm tested on it next week. Love the One Hit Wonderland stuff by the way.
  • Goobian
Monster Mash is definitely a great song. And he did live a full life. I love how he fully embraced why he was famous.

It looked like Todd had boobies while wearing his costume... just sayin'.

I was not sore and enjoyed the review dispite Halloweenie not making an appearance.

I actually saw that movie back in elementary school. My teacher showed it to us as a Halloween treat.

Great episode. Love these one hit wonders.

Wow. That werewolf song was the most out-of-tune thing I've heard since that clip of Katy Perry singing without pitch correction. I guess we can thank auto-tune for one thing: We'll never be expected to settle for a performance like that again.
  • VillainousBlogger  - This song's a lot of fun!

The last Halloween I remember being scared was when I dressed as a dalmatian puppy going trick-or-treating with my sister and baby sitter. We were headed to another house when one of the owners of it jumped out of a tree in a mask to scare us! He apologized and gave us extra candy for nearly traumatizing us but I always shined my flashlight into the treetops just to make sure it never happened again. It didn't but better safe than sorry.

You shouldve mention the AWFUL disney cover of this song.
  • Oblivion Mara  - thank you warmly, Todd
    I'm now a fan of Bobby Pickett's.
And you made me wish I were American, just so I could add such a song to my national patrimony.

Here's what we traditionnally listen to in France, with all the family... Jacques Higelin's Champagne - http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=bZq9VnDI2Co-
It is spooky, goofy, and a lot of fun too...

Merry Halloween to you all !
  • Hagard  - Oh Tadpoles.
Not to be sacrilegious but the cover by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band (Neil Innes who worked with Monty Python played piano) was better, and the fact that Tod missed it seems odd, didn't he fully check the history.

    It's on the Album "Tadpoles"

Do a OHW of "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" by The Proclaimers. Me and all of my friends who know it agree that it's one of those songs that's handled like junk food; you hear it and listen to it for so long you grow to hate it.

Moron, were you even paying attention? He said it was a dark time! And did you even hear those songs? the point being that they're bad!

I was looking for a song to play a Halloween episode of my podcast and Monster Mash was the first and only thing to come to mind, though I hadn't heard it in years. I had to google for more ideas.

I ended up using Mash, among others. I discovered that I loved the song very much.

Todd, you mean to tell me you can't stream on Netflix?

Lol, that song is funny initially, but seeing that footage made it hilarious with Bobby's expressions lol.

Great review Todd, but all the mentions of other Halloween theme acts and no mention of Alice Cooper?
  • maalbe987
Yeah, I was surprised by that too. I'm planning on listening to Welcome 2 My Nightmare again this Halloween to help fully get in the spirit of it all.

I'm also surprised that there was no mention of Oingo Boingo when people think of Halloween music. I really did enjoy the look back at the song and the career of Bobby Pickett.
