This was both a hit AND the start of a linedance craze in Britain too. His career disappeared even faster here but bizarrely the line dancing persisted for a while (see 5,6,7,8 by Steps, for example). This song is so boring, I never got its appeal even then.

You decided to review this purely to torture us by playing the song, didn't you?

Oh, early '90s, what were you doing? Jesus Christ, I'd never heard any of Billy's other stuff before, but, wow, this guy has to be the most stereotypically early '90s guy EVER. That music. That black and white music video. That plaid flannel. That hair. Those vocals. That ballad.

Seriously, I think I just scored '90s bingo.

As a denizen of western Washington, home of grunge, I will let you know that plaid flannel never ended.

    agreed.
I, native portlandian, from the great state of oregon, literally three hours from seattle, admits to never EVER cleaning out my closet of flannels

I'm betting 90's Kid loves him.

Country music's been popular since before it was known as western, back when cowboys were pickin away at their geetars to stay amused on the lonesome trail.

Billy Ray's popularity, like most muscicians', is a result of Clear Channel advertising him heavily on the radio. Most people don't seek out good music. They buy whatever stays in their head (is the most repetitive).

Miley's younger than her dad was when he showed skin.

13:28 Gah the audio's so much louder from Todd on this audio-track.

This guy clearly wasn't a 1-hit wonder. You're listing multiple singles he put out which sold well.

Mulholland Dr is still Lynch's best work.

A bad performance from an actor is sometimes the result of following a director's instructions rather than failing to convey a character. A show on Disney like Hanna Montana certainly has the director encouraging actors to ham it up and give cheesy performances so I wouldn't blame Billy Rae or any of other actors.

You're damn right it is! People even danced to this. They must have been quite drunk.

I loved this song when I was kid. In fact I made my parents play the Chipmunk version that we had on cassette at least twice every time we had a road trip.

Regarding Billy Ray's weird vocal stylings -- I think someone listened to Bat Out of Hell II a few too many times. Dude's seriously channeling some '90s Meatloaf.
  • thispartysucks128  - Up and kill his man
Hell yeah dude, loved this album as a kid...not so much anymore though.

Todd, I have a fantastic idea for your next one hit wonderland...Chumbawamba! !

Please do it...more people need to know about the brilliance of this band

I'd say "I can't believe this song even took off in the first place, what was wrong with humanity," but we have Justin Beiber, who's kickoff single was "Baby Baby Baby ooooo". For the most part, popular music still sucks.

i never knew he was a left handed guitar player. thanks for the review.

I never really and still don't hate this song, i agree his other songs, with the constant deep voice is a bit irritating song after song.

achy breaky is not meant to be taken seriously but in a more innocent cartoony way. meaning kids could sing along and not know whats going on.

if it gets stuck in your head/ catchy, a beat different from any other sound currently popular and family friendly ( sorta) then it has a good change of being a top hit ( exceptions do apply time to time....sometimes for a decade or two)

Be still, my heart. My Achy Breaky Heart. That mullet just spawns the most charming creations, doesn't it?

I was never into the country music scene, and this song was one that I am thankfully too young to remember. However, I do want to comment that one of the script writers for the Hannah Montanna show is a friend of a friend, and he says Billy Ray can't act too.
  • Volare3  - As for me

I only liked it in that you gotta laugh at this song kinda way. I thought BRC did "American Outlaw." Now that I know it was Tim McGraw I feeel better about liking that song, for some reason.

I haven't watched this yet, but I'm going to make a guess--at some point in the review, Todd blasts the guy for unleashing Miley Cyrus on the world.

I'm going to go even further and guess it comes up early on, in a joke, before he gets to the legacy portion.

Aw. phooey. It didn't come up once. Where's your vile hatred for Miley Cyrus, Todd? You did know he's the one who got his daughter the show, right? It was he who was first cast, and he proposed his daughter.

At the end of your "Rico Suave" review, you played "Weird Al's" "Taco Grande", but no "Achy Breaky Song" this time??

Don't play that song, that 'Achy Breaky' song
The most annoying song I know
'Cause if you play that song, that 'Achy Breaky' song
I might blow up my radio, ooooooooooooooooh

    I was expecting Animaniacs.

    Don't tell mah head
    My empty hollow head
    Ya know I wouldn't understaaaaand!

Everyone was so sick of that song by the time that episode aired. Sherri was a genius.

Seriously. I mean, it's way more fitting because it's literally ABOUT the song you spent half the video talking about! I... have no idea what is playing at the end of the video instead, or why you chose it over any of the many, MANY parodies that were spawned over the years.

  • OmegaInfinity
I take offense to that remark. Your free to have your opinion, but please think about what other people might think of it before putting it on the web.

Besides, Billy-Ray has made worse stuff.

(Insert picture of a certain something involving a blonde wig)

    MUCH. WORSE.

Huh, I actually didn't know Billy Ray Cyrus made this song. Sorry, I don't follow country music, at all. I knew who this guy was, other than that he was Miley's daddy.

But yes, this goddamn song has gotten all of the country, including here in Texas, learning the line dance. Thank god for Cotton Eye Joe!

I loved this song as a kid, and I still do today. Yeah the lyrics are a bit stupid, the vocals wonky, and the music isn't the most complex thing to ever exist; but its good, clean fun. :3 Personally it doesn't sound //bad// its just not the best. We all have stupid songs that we like, heck we might even //need// them to keep our heads on our shoulders.
  • Tygerstrype
I still like Weird Al's parody. Honestly, that's when you know you've struck musical gold is when Al does a parody of it. It reflected my thoughts of that damnable song. " Don't play that song. that achy breaky song. you know I hate that song a bunch."
  • TheBookGeek

Oh god I hate this song

The fact that without it, we probably would have never had Miley Cyrus just makes it worse.

All country music sounds the same to me, same with rap.
  • Bloodrealm
No, there's three kinds of country: The easygoing male kind that Achy Breaky Heart is, the sappy, inspirational kind, and the psychotic, evil, paranoid, vengeful, mean-spirited, bitch-woman kind (like "Right Now", I think it's called).

    I just laid a fart
    An Inky Stinky Fart.
I just don't think you understand.
'Cause if I laid a fart
    An Inky Stinky Fart
I just might of pooped my pants

.... What do you mean those aren't the lyrics. That's what all the kids in Elementary school were singing in the 90's...

A Billy Ray Cyrus song?! Aiiiieee...

*Flees for the hills... Then turns around as the hills have more country musicians within*

If you were going to bring Trey Parker into this, you could have included one of his characters, Randy Marsh, dancing to the song from one of the episodes of south park.

Why no mention of Weird Al's parody "Achy Breaky Song"? I mean, common, it straight up says in it's lyrics that "Achy Breaky Heart" is a stupid, annoying and overplayed song.

That being said, ABH is a silly song...and yet I still love it, because it's silly and catchy. I also admittedly like Billy Ray's voice when he isn't doing the stupid over-the-top stuff. (I will also admit the Billy Ray is a good looking man and is actually more attractive now then he was back in '92. I will also admit to watching the first season of Hannah Montana and laughing at a joke where he complained about his "achy breaky back" after attempting to limbo).
