    First, I guess?

And thanks for the review; I wasn't sure whether I should watch this or not.

(Trailer for Splice) That trailer lied to me.
(Trailer for Epic Movie) That trailer lied to me.

I'm never going to trust a trailer again.

(Trailer for The Dark Knight) That trailer told me sweet truths

(Trailer for Avengers) That trailer was golden truth

(Trailer for Twilight) That trailer gave me a fair warning of the fore-coming shit storm.

I will trust many trailers. ;)

My friends made me watch this movie, God it sucked ass. The plot seemed basic bu then became ridiculous fast and the people were so damn stupid in it.

Huh, I heard this movie was actually pretty good, least the reviews that I read around the time it came out.

Yeah, even after watching the review, it doesn't look that bad.

It has it's quirks but ultimately it's a pretty shitty movie. Give it a watch.

It really comes down to how much you can tolerate Clive and Elsa. If you can at least tolerate their dumbassery, it's a fine movie.

If you can't, you will loathe this movie.
  • AndrewDeLong
    avatar
I disagree. I believe it comes down to how much bestiality you can tolerate, and at which point are you willing to say "meh, close enough to human."

The sad part is, that scene wasn't even a shock, as the amount of foreshadowing that they used to build up to it was simply unrestrained.

Aside from just being a logically lacking movie (the likes of which makes Battlefield Earth look decent), it was a wholly predictable one. I went into that movie blind to the plot, but within the first 15 or so minutes, I was picking out who was gonna die, the rough order, and some "key" moments...all well before they happened. And I'm not the kind of guy that can normally do that.

Long story short, watch it if it's on netflix, but don't bother renting it or even torrenting it. It's really not even worth the bandwidth.

PS: The only saving grace in that movie was SGA'a David Hewlett, and even that was a minor one.

    *sigh* Disengage nerd-rage mode.

I liked this movie. They handled the psychology of dren fairly well. And the scenes with it/her were very tense, capturing the same danger you feel with a wild animal someone's trying to keep as a pet. Also the whole sex thing managed to achieve more levels of wrongness than anything i've ever encountered before (if we all agree to ignore a serbian film).

To me, this movie was pretty meh. I felt like it was almost another M. Night movie with how not-horror it was compared to the trailer. Good review, made me laugh.

Also, I am saddened that Spoony won't be making cameos like this anymore.
  • wolfdreamer1978

Whoa Spoony's last time on TGWTG.

But aside from that, a good review. It's interesting, the part that freaked me out the most was Fred and Ginger killing each other. More so then Dren killing everyone else.

The biggest issue for me was the whole incest thing. I mean Dren slept with her "father" and this his biological mother and she got pregnant. Gee, that can't possibly go wrong can it?
  • Jegsimmons
    avatar
so...why did Brody's character fuck the barely human being?

this movie had potential, like if it didnt go wild and instead the tension was from it learning and acting in the city. or if it got lost in the city and or trying to avoid authorities and the press to harrass the thing!

Creature feature is bottom of the barrel in this case.
  • Freezer
If you watch the whole movie, you'll find that Clive has no spine. He barely even puts up a token "No, this is wrong" before he's humping away.

Personally, I liked this movie... until the very end. If you read the reviews for the movie instead of watching the trailers (because trailers are ALWAYS honest and NEVER lie to us about what the movie is about), you would have a better idea of what to expect.

Just because scientists are, well, scientists, it doesn't mean that aren't human. They have egos, they have family history, and they have flaws. I thought the couple's interplay was interesting, and Dren not being a nasty monster (well, again, until the very end) was a nice change of pace.

This isn't exactly a horror film, but I think it's still a good kinda-thought-provoking film, even with the botched ending.

On a personal note, I once tried to splice together a hobo and a orange. It didn't work out... and I so loved that orange.
  • Freezer
Agreed about not going by the trailer: I first heard about the movie via Movie Bob's review and enjoyed it. Totally see why some - to put it mildly - don't, but I did.
  • Santa Prime  - Ferral Kittehs don't like to play
I picked up some feral kittens once. I was bleeding a few seconds later and the kittehs ran away.
  • alex251960
I guess I found this movie mildly interesting only because I hadn't seen any of the credits or heard anything about it, so I had no expectations to begin with.
  • Imperator-Zor
Sorry Scifiguy, but this movie is awesome and you don't get it. It is a take on the basic Frankenstein story, substituting the allegory of the creator as a father for a mother. You expected a renegade monster eats people story, and instead you get insight

"Bad Parenting" is hardly a complaint, it is a critical part of the movie. You have two people, one of which is working out mommy issues, the other is going along with the ride because of his wife, letting others people know about it would end really badly and a scientific curiosity. In the beginning they don't know how anthropomorphic Dren would get. From where they stood in the beginning, it might have grown up into a larger version of that initial being. Neither of them know exactly how to handle this creature. As for the cat, she was worried about allergic reactions and infections. Making a bad call while parenting is nothing unusual, let alone with a creature that is not entirely human.

"so...why did Brody's character fuck the barely human being?"

Because the Dren is attractive and she forced herself on him. Before you go on any tangent, she is played by Delphine Chanéac and Delphine Chanéac is smoking. The only men who would NOT find her hot are gay.

Oh come on!!!! This is a good movie , it is meant to be about flawed characters who are too clever for their own good and too arogant to know that they are in too deep. Dren is not meant to be a usual monster on the loose and is a sympathetic character, much like the Frankenstien monster in the original story. I felt it was a love letter to David Cronenberg of the 80s and if you haven't yet check it out.

I really liked the first half of this movie! The two main characters are awful people, and they're obviously trying to convince each other and themselves that they aren't. I like the terrible ethics and the bad parenting a hell of a lot more than the monster movie stuff. It was something different and interesting.

I mean, sure, the last part had the horror elements and stuff, but why? The rest of the movie was not that! It's a sudden genre shift I did not find welcome.

I honestly loved this movie until they made the absolute biggest mistake I think they could have done considering everything else that had taken place beforehand. They made Dren talk. Not only did they have Dren speak, but they chose that as its only lines. I just...wtf WHY!

It honestly nearly ruined the whole fucked up thing for me.

    EDIT:
After actually watching the review instead of just leaving my general opinion of the movie, I now realize that you were looking for an entirely different movie going into it. When I saw trailer for Splice, I thought it would be another uninteresting monster movie. When I heard that it was a different take on Frankenstein, the ethics of playing with human DNA, and was generally more introspective, I got excited. The film Dr. Insano talked about was what I went to see, and that's exactly what I got.

You, on the other hand, were looking for Isolation, which if you don't know is an Irish film that is basically Splice if it were an actual horror movie and about RADICALLY genetically altered cows. I saw the line in the description that there mutated cows and thought it would be epicly hilarious. I was incredibly disappointed to find out that it was a pretty good horror movie and not horrible effects taped onto cows. I recommend it.

The 6 flavors of movie trailers:

*The rare good one that doesn't do any of the following.
*The kind that doesn't tell you jack shit about the movie.
*The kind that lies about what kind of movie it is. (Including ones that show scenes that aren;t even in the movie).
*The kind that gives the whole movie away.
*The ones for comedy movies that play all of the best jokes, which you will have heard a million times before you actually see the movie & will no longer be funny by the time you see it.
*A combo of any of the 3 above, such as trailers that make you think it's going to be a comedy or horror film & literally plays every single joke or kill the movie has in the trailer.

"When a big corporation is telling you that YOUR plan might be evil, you might want to back off a bit." lol.

No matter how many times I ask what a Hipster is, & no matter how many times people tell me, I still don't know what a Hipster is.

Well, now I know what it would look like if Gandalf did a commercial for shiny hair shampoo.

Bennett, you tease, you sad you'd never do Fanfic Theater again.

A hipster is basically the modern equivalent of a beatnik: So in essence snarky, frequently pretentious, disaffected people that think highly of themselves who dress and talk in very ironic terms to take on airs of "hip" intellectualism, while more often than not only being superficially intellectual.

Love the review. Who knew Insano could be so insightful? By the way, the crack about a pepperoni pizza reminded me of something. I've heard before that it's a bad idea to order one in Germany, because what you'll get is a pizza with jalapeños on it. Food for thought.
  • just4theheckofit
You might not get what you thought you ordered but it's not a bad idea. That pizza is delicious! ;) By the way, It's not necessarily jalapeños. More often it's smaller kinds of chili pepper. If you want a pepperoni pizza in germany you must order a "salami pizza" and hope that they use the spicy kind of salami (which they usually do).

Heh. I liked the joke calling back to one of your cameos in the Nostalgia Critic's Star Trek Month.

    "Go to your corner!"

Otherwise, from your analysis, it doesn't actually seem like a badly made movie, but rather a movie that doesn't work with normal conventions or aim towards a general audience (perhaps why the trailer intentionally misled people).

It doesn't have a hero to root for, and explores the flaws of people and how they lead to consequences, and even that some people will just never learn or don't care about what damage they cause.

Keep in mind I haven't seen the movie, and I can understand why it may not be an ENJOYABLE film, but films don't have to all be escapist in nature. They can explore elements and teach and show without having a happy ending, a likable character or even a certain quota of drama.

Just saying, that it doesn't follow normal conventions, but at the same time, doesn't look badly put together. Maybe not as great as some reviews make it out to be, but your review didn't leave me thinking that it was a below average movie at all. Great analysis though, regardless.

Y'know, I can't help but be reminded of the baby from Eraser Head when the creature's in its first form.

And it's kind of funny how Spoony keeps popping up in other people's videos despite having left. It's like he never really went anywhere (Yes, I know he made all those cameos before he left the site so don't bother telling me).
  • JetstreamGW

He might not have. Just 'cuz he doens't work here anymore doesn't mean people disassociated themselves from him. He's still friends with, for instance, Angry Joe and Linkara. Maybe he's still working with SciFi Guy. Why not? :D

Also, we've seen non-Channel Awesome cameos plenty of times - Hagan before she signed, Phil Buni, The Black Nerd, Foldable Human etc. Spoony will cameo for his friends if they want him to.

About half way through the movie my friend and I started taking bets on how it would end. She stated Dren would give birth to (explode out) Fred and Gingers and everyone would die. I stated that She would go on a Species-style love spree and die giving birth.

Granted, changing into a male and raping her mother was not on the list. We honestly weren't paying attention at that point and just didn't care.

And the fact that the leads are horrible scientists, that the film is neither interesting nor scary, the fact that it's rather boring, the fact that the best characters get killed off, the fact that the plot is riddled with holes, the fact that there are character inconsistencies throughout...

But you know, you're right. LITERALLY every complaint.

Maybe someone else here should grow the hell up.

And now it's you who completely misses what Professor_Jack was pointing out. Aren't we just in the middle of one great, big hug, here.

Plot holes and inconsistencies were the whole point of the movie? Wow, that's interesting.
  • dennett316
    avatar
What plot holes are you talking about? If you mean the scientists acting like jackasses and not following proper method etc...then that's not plot holes, that's the point of the story.
I honestly remember nothing that stood out to me as a plot hole, so can you list some examples?
  • Steve Potter
    avatar
Character inconsistencies are a form of plot hole. And there is a difference between characters not following the proper method to make a point and just complete idiocy. NO scientists, not even idiotic ones, would make some of those mistakes.
  • Steve Potter
    avatar
Just for the record, I'm NOT attacking the movie or calling its fans dumb. I'm simply defending the review and saying that That Sci-Fi Guy had legitimate complaints about the film.
  • ohe
    avatar
A character is defined by how he's established in the movie, not by what one might be able to assume based on labels like "scientist". Either way, that is irrelevant. The issue with Professor_Jack was about the movie being criticized for succeeding at what it was trying to do in the first place.

And the issue with me is you being snarky without bothering to back it up with reasoning. You just made a list of faults in the movie apparently based on nothing but assumptions, instead of real refutes.

If you're still holding that record, you might want to add that you're not doing very good job with that defending.

Oh man now I'm reminded of how much I HATED this movie, I think I spent half of it screaming "You are both stupid! Just kill it! Get a pet! You deserve to be killed horribly for being this bad at your -job-"

Come to think of it...probably explains a lot of why I really don't like Prometheus: Never since Splice have you seen people, who should by all rights know better, be so damningly stupid at their own jobs.
