Dear lord do I hate movies with twisted psychos who don't get their comuppance. And what, they can break the fourth wall?! What kind of a bullcrap is that?! There's no longer any tension because we know that the protagonists can't win! Anything they manage to accomplish can be undone with a single rewind button.

Linkara isn't this exactly what Phelous said?

That I believe was the point. The film is a meditation on violence in media aka film and how an audience perceives it. (From the mouth of the director) And the fact that this film exists is pointless anyways because it's a shot for shot remake. By an actually acclaimed director who won the Palm D' Or this year at Cannes. Also you didn't know the protagonists couldn't win til that moment in the film with the remote which is near the very end. The German film is much better acted. It doesn't appear forced. And I also like this film because it doesn't react to a typical FORMULA!!! I like the German version. This one is a pointless waste of resourses all because some audience's can't read!!! Yeah I hate "The Usual Suspects" too. Comuppance? really. A Clockwork Orange the film, Alex totally learns his lesson  , Godfather 2 Micheal's still alive & rich, and Godfather 1 for that matter he is a bad guy after all...but at least he got his in 3 I guess. There's a lot of great films where the apparent bad guys win. But I do agree this movie sucks not story or structure wise, just waste of resources wise the film already exists only in "German"! Why make it again!!! :woohoo: But also to each his own, + someone below referred to "Funny Games" as a horror film, it's more like an art film than anything else and at least it tries not to be formulaic. Thank god.

Austrian. The original was Austrian.

Maybe I'm overthinking this, but what I got from it was that this film was supposed to be the moviemaker's reply to the torture porn of this world. Peter and Paul represent the people who make these movies, or better yet, who watch these movies and enjoy them. I feel it's quite obvious from what these characters say, about the need for entertainment during their 'games', the heroes of fiction etcetera. It isn't so much about the family and their tormentors and what happens to them as it is a way to say: "You people enjoy seeing human beings tortured and slaughtered for your amusement? Do you still like it when it's real people? Is it still funny now, with a little reality injected?"
Anyway, that's my take. I do agree that these films that want us to enjoy senseless slaughter of human beings are wrong in every possible sense of the word. Maybe I'd have preferred another way of making that point. In any case, I think it's more of a social critique than an actual horror movie and shouldn't be watched like it was a straight horror movie. It's a philosophical piece, not a thriller.

That, or I really am overthinking it and it's just pretentious torture porn.

Wait 2 barrel shotgun long pause 2 guys....
WHY THE F DIDN'T SHE SHOOT BOTH OF EM!
• Stuart
It wasn't shown that there were only two rounds for it. They played a game with her where she had to choose (After the death of their son) wether her husband would be killed slowly with a knife, or instantly with the shotgun. And she refused to choose, the scene I just described preceded the one where she shoots him.

Hilarious! I'm really not into horror movies at all... But watching your review made me want to know exactly how stupid this movie is.

Some of your jokes I didn't get, but that's because I don't know what you were alluding to and that's not your fault.

All-in-all... You're different than Doug and that's good! Doug's videos are great but having two of him would take away from the experience of the videos. Funny. Different. Props!

I don't think the rewind moment was supposed to even be real. I believe it was just a bit of a gag to play with the audience and lead you on that they might have a chance of escaping, instead of being completely hopeless. And as for the whole talking to the camera, I think is was pretty much the same thing as the rewinding. Not really happening, just toying with you. But if you like horror/supspense movies it's actually pretty good (Atleast the Austrian version is, found it on Youtube with english subtitles). I like your reviews Phelous (Yes I'm still replying to you, Linkara.) but you were a bit unfair with some of the moments in the movie. Like the scenes where they'll just pause for a while, like after the guys leave, what would you do if you just saw your son get his head blown off? Though the shot showing the outside of the house was a bit ridiculous. As for the stair scene, your giving the wrong feeling to the audience, you don't really show what led up to it or what follows it. You just show that they had a randomn shot of the stairs and nothing happened, when infact the kid had gone upstairs and he comes back down. Once again it's a bit overkill, but I suppose it's just trying to give a realistic, 'Show you everything going on', feel. And finally (I think) the refrigerator shot, it explains the point for the dog leaving the house. If you haven't already seen it try the Austrian version, I thought it was good. (On a sidenote I haven't seen the remake.) But overall I suppose a fair review if you don't like the style of film making displayed in the movie.

That movie was sooo painful to watch. How about the 15 or so minutes of nothing after the Race gets shut off. I wish this on no one.

This movie reminds me of Dora the Explorer with the guy talking to the camera. Mac the alien should of came in at the end to save the lady from drowning.
• Deadbeater  - What a horible review
I'm sorry but I thought this was one of the most annoying movie reviews I have ever seen. It wasn't funny and he tried too hard. Sorry if I upset anyone by not enjoying this

Actually, I thought that part where the guy rewind'd his brother's death was pretty funny ... and I kinda now WANT to find and watch this movie.

... nice job, you failed at convincing me this was shit.

After a video of you bashing this movie, I want to see this movie even more.
I thought this was a poor review, but that hide and seek part was the cherry on that crap sundae my good sir. You are not entertaining.
• zmonbobbo  - Seriously...
Why all the hate? I don't see you guys trying to make anything better. I personally thought it was hillarious. It's got a different pacing style to it.

And for those of you saying you want to see it even more, I can save you some time: don't. It blows. How could the looooooooong pauses, stupid reactions of the victims (turn off the race, keep drying the phone), and idiotic, bland, dry, repititive, fourth-wall-breaking psychopaths that Phelous pointed out possibly make you want to see this movie?

Get a variable sense of humor and learn to laugh at something that isn't Spoony, Benzaie, or That Guy (all of which are awesome in their own way, BTW).

That freind of yours, he looks like this guy I knew in high school. We sat next to each other in Speech.

Anyway, great review. When the movie came out, I was thinking of seeing it. I'm glad I didn't.

I thought this was a very entertaining review, especially at the very end. I haven't seen Funny Games, but after watching this review I have no interest in it.

I loved the jokes, he went into character as one of the killers, and he even makes fun of himself for talking in a monotone voice for his previous reviews. I can see why people are not liking his reviews, because they're expecting a Nostalgia Critic clone. Which is a shame because I find his style of humor original. He's isn't going crazy from frustration, and he isn't making up is own swear words. I do hope these videos find an audience on this site, and that Phelous is added as on of the new guys.
• OptimusPrime
This review was so stupid it was hilarious, and sometimes thats what you are looking for.

excellent cameo by G1 Megatron

also the chick was cute

is it weird that i am hungry for eggs now?

Well, I definitely liked the old style better, where you weren't as...well, manic. Sure, it was a bad movie, but you're supposed to be manic AFTER you start watching it, not right from the beginning. Also, the "everyone killing each other" thing at the end went on too long. And maybe it's just cause I disliked that song, but having it play everytime someone got shot, while funny in concept, really grates the nerves.

Still, I was laughing up until that part. You kept me engaged all the way through, cause I wanted to see what would happen/you would say next.
• Caliban Don Flamingo
I saw this review over at Screwattack. That voice Yoda voice thing you do throws me off a bit man, also SNL drove dear sister parodies into the ground. Finally I friggin loved this movie. I still think you're funny though, I just don't care much for this review.
• Nchick groupie
This was OK, I just never thought I see a bad Tim Roth film!! But that film was terrible and anything that can make it mean something is OK

rofl-wafls. good stuff Phelous!
• mattcruise
I thought this movie was brilliant, I was a little huh on the fourth wall thing, but I loved the build up and suspense and just the over all style.
• mattcruise
Also while in the movie I thought the did do dumb things, but they were plausibly dumb. Like I could tell what was going on in their head even if it was a mistake, also the knife red herring was awesome as was the casual killing of Naomi Watts. In fact the more I think about it I even like the forth wall breakage.
• dakostro  - Good job, Phelan
avatar
My favorite line was "Wait, wait! What kind of sandwich did he make?" :D

I really dig your reviews, especially how they're so different. But then again, aren't all the contributors different in their own ways? There's people from all over the world with their own style of doing reviews. You do that voodoo that you do so good.
• Crazy Man Dan  - Wait a second...
Should he be brought on board?
So, you mean we're still disputing this? Here I thought this was his "Welcome Phelous to the team" video.

I don't get why there's so much contention here. I mean, I get why some may not like it - HatefulCactus said it perfectly up there - but that doesn't mean the reviews aren't entertaining, it just means it's not their style.

I believe this site has grown to the point where not every viewer will like every contributor. In fact, it's been like that for me for a long time now, ever since Suede came on as a regular. I don't hate the guy, I've just never been a fan of anime or manga, so I simply don't "get" what he does. However, that doesn't mean I go leaving nasty comments on his videos, I simply click the "Mark as Read" button instead of the link to the page when I see one come through my RSS feed. Some people around here would do well to do the same.

The fact remains that the style Phelous has here is completely different from anything else on this site right now. The wise folk who run this site wouldn't put him out there if they didn't think he had something worthwhile to offer, and I think enough people enjoy what they see to where the detractors can simply go watch something else.

You fought for Benzaie, now your Internet calls you again: Phight for Phelous.

As to the review itself, I enjoyed it thoroughly, and the skit at the end was particularly hilarious.

First of all, i dont care too much for the movie(only seen austrian version, but since it's a shot-by-shot remake...): from what i understand it's supposed to be satirising the violence in the mass media - hence talking to the camera, breaking the 4th wall etc. - but all it does is try to shock everyone with the senseless violence...there's nothing worse than movies tripping over their own message...

That said, i dont like this review either:/
problem is that you keep overdoing things...spoofing the intro+music was hilarious at first but after 4 or 5 times...meh:(
• Sammy7s7
Well, this makes the second guy on this site that I hate.
• NEUTRO!
avatar
Well, this makes the first watcher on the site who's a douchebag.
• Wayne
i couldnt finish this review, its so obvious that you didnt get the point of this movie, its not supposed to even be entertaining (i dont get why they made an american remake) and its not supposed to be scary. All it is is the deconstruction of a genre, mixed with blatand anti-violence preaching that makes me hate the director, yet i cant argue with it being well-made.
• Linkara
avatar
Well-made? What kind of screenwriting is it to say, "Well, she killed one of them. Ooh! I know - he'll use the remote control! IT MAKES PERFECT SENSE."
• RamuCastro

I liked the review- it was funny. Everyone on here showing hate should realize not everyone is going to make the same type of videos as NC or AVGN. He embarrased the filmakers for making a shitty movie by reanacting it in a hilarious way. How you could you complain?
• Chechi25  - wait... what??
avatar
The reason I didn't like this review is because you didn't give an introduction to what kind of movie you were talking about, if it weren't for the title of your video and the comments below I wouldn't have figured out the title of the movie

Sure there were some funny moments, but overusing the same joke kills it

I really think your style is different, but the thing is it is not constant I liked your last review better
