Was the sound bad for anyone other than me? Its not the voice overs though, only the parts where Phelous is on screen. Other than that, great video. I always enjoy your stuff.
  • jabraille
    avatar
This one's sound was okay for me (a little tinny, maybe), but some of the older vids have been sounding weird to me. Iunno.
  • ladydiskette  - Okay I will admit this...
    avatar
Jump scare #2 kinda startled me a little, but its true, it is kinda creepy to have someone's reflection appear in a rearview mirror behind you espically when you had your car locked the whole time.
  • August M.
    avatar
Yeah, it was too loud. But was a great review.

The audio for the camera bits has been re-dubbed.
  • ladydiskette  - Here is question I want to ask..
    avatar
Is there anytime in a horror movie when a jumpscare is effective and WORKS?

Because it seems like to me that in a horror movie putting in a jumpscare seems to doom it to failure.
  • ulmuchiha
    avatar
possibly when there is a jump scare of a fat man dancing and jiggling
  • jabraille
    avatar
Great, Phelous, now I'm scared of dead old ladies. =P
  • Maxtroid
    avatar
Ahahaha, I love the DBZ reference in the title card. Only a North American localization team would think that "Home For Infinite Losers" is a clever cover-up for "HELL".
  • Tatterdemalion
What bothered me most out of everything is that the guy who seemed to be trying to kill the talking goat acted like he was trying to chop its head off with a knife rather than, you know, slitting its throat. Or using something that could believably chop off a goat's head.
  • ladydiskette
    avatar
Shit, did the woman Christine just stab that kitten?

*gives her a "Farewell" gift basket and laughs at the stupid blond "heroine" as she is being dragged into Hell*
  • ArtticWitchica
    avatar
Yeah she kills the kitten, Which was one of my friends complete reasons why he hated the film.

She deserved to go to hell because she killed an innocent kitten just to save her ass.
  • JimmydelaKopin  - However...
    avatar
When the lamia is summoned, it literally coughs up the kitten, saying that it rejects the sacrifice.
So yeah, she's selfish and wicked, but the cute kitten doesn't stay dead...though even being temporarily taken by the lamia might scar the kitty for life.
  • Axel Osbourne
    avatar
Ok, I liked the movie, first of all, but everyone has there own opinion. But I do have to say one thing: All the people that are saying that she deserved it just for killing the cat, you are hypocritcs, each and every one of you! You know that you would do the exact same thing, the EXACT SAME THING! Hey, I don't believe in hurting anything needlessly, but if I had a choice between being horrible murdered, and burning in hell forever, OR, killing a cat (not a person, mind you, a FUCKING CAT!) Garfield would be dead!

Also, they kill a goat in this movie, but nobody seems upset about that. What, goats have it coming? Is it because cats are cute, and ugly deserves to die? Who did the goat hurt? Sure, they eat garbage, but that's just recycling, he's enviromentally friendly, LET HIM LIVE! So goats suck, but cats are sacered (what is this, Egypt?)

Go ahead, call me an asshole all you want, (I'm sure you will) be deep down you know you'd do the same thing.

    Love
    Axel Osbourne.
  • Aardy
    I second that.

Cat lovers sure are scarry people. Look at a cat the wrong way and you deserve eternal torment. Thats harsh.
  • Sylveria
    avatar
I'd probably go for the goat or a chicken first rather than stab the crap out of my housepet.

I don't think you're an asshole for calling people on kitten bias. I do think you're an asshole though.
  • Mokyn
    avatar
    >> All the people that are saying that she deserved it just for killing the cat, you are hypocritcs, each and every one of you! You know that you would do the exact same thing, the EXACT SAME THING!

Yeah, when I REALLY get my jacket button cursed by a crazy Russian woman who didn't get a third bank extension, I'll be able to tell you what is REALISTIC to do in that situation.
  • Axel Osbourne
    avatar
Um, excuse me Mokyn, I do believe that was a crazy GYPSY woman, not Russin.
  • Mokyn
    avatar
Oh well, if she's a Gypsy, I guess that changes the situation completely then.

    (drowns in own's sarcasm)
  • ThatGuyWithTheGirl
    avatar
Actually many people in my country don't like cats.
  • minor_fifth
True fact. Pets are not people, guys. They're just not. And if you would die to save one, well, you're probably insane.
  • Crunchy_Frog
ArtticWitchica wrote: "She deserved to go to hell because she killed an innocent kitten just to save her ass."

I hope this was sarcasm, because if not, this is the stupidest thing I've read here.

Really? You think someone killing an ANIMAL to save their own life makes them evil? And they deserve to "go to hell" in a literal sense? Wow.
  • Shadowflame66
    avatar
...Seriously? You're telling me that you actually would not kill a kitten to prevent yourself going to Hell. That's just insane, man.
  • nafeasonto
    avatar
yeah when hundreds of kittens and cats die everyday. Oh yeah and by the way at the local shelter they get euthanized every two weeks, or KILLED every two weeks. so please don't start with that bs.
  • rjw22  - agreed
i think that is so heartless but i can understand the choice she made but she just did on a whim also the kitten was adorable and the part with the goat is not as bad but,my grandpa had a pet goat and it was so sweet i feel sorta bad for the girl on the end
  • NotAnHiro  - Holy futs.
That old lady is like a futsing TANK, brah. She could give my grandmother a run for her money.

    JesuOtaku is Nash's girlfriend!?

Wait. Where am I? That one video must have sent me into a comment coma. Better make an appropriate comment or be banished by the Comment Gods of Norgamoth.

    Hmmm...Drag Me To Hell

I like to think of this movie's alternate title. "Let's see how much nasty crap we can put in this girl's mouth before the movie ends."
  • LikaLaruku
    avatar
Rinry is still the cutest...I mean still available. I think.

::Is a little jealous of JesuOtaku::

  • AstraVex

Is it just me or is Phelous's Camera Microphone sound REALLY blaring and distorted?
  • der_ketzer
    avatar
nope the sound is definitely fucked up on this one.
  • LikaLaruku
    avatar
Didn't notice. Listening to Enigma XM will mess with your sound perception.
  • Taufiq91  - This is one of those movies...
    avatar
    where it made me say:

"Man, i wish Raimi would make more Evil Dead movies than awkward superhero films and devil horror schlocks".
  • Film Vigilante
I admit that I liked the movie. The ending was obvious. It would have been better if the boyfriend got dragged to hell, more of a devastating ending.
  • Piano Island
Same here. I love this movie, despite its shortcomings. And I agree on the ending -- from the moment she gave the coin to her boyfriend it was obvious what would happen.
I do wish that there was an alternate ending where Justin Long's character was taken instead of her.
  • YourMovieGuide
    avatar
Goats and hankies!! Oh my how scary! XD
  • Piano Island  - Aww, I loved this film.
To me, "Drag Me to Hell" is a throw-back to the campy horror films of the seventies and eighties, and I love the film for it.
The constant-ingestion-of- nasty-things theme running through the movie is supposed to be a reference to Christine's eating disorder; in fact, Sam Raimi said that the whole movie is basically an allegory for Christine having an eating disorder.
  • Rhomega
I can see the allegory, but where does the ending fit in?
  • Sylveria
    avatar
That really sounds like an after-the-fact justification when he realized he put in a bunch of gross-out "scares" and wanted them to be relevant.
  • Tom Smith
    avatar
I always thought of the old lady not as an old lady getting justified revenge, but an evil self-entitled monster worthy of hate like Jason or Leatherface. You would not kill someone for making you lose your house, much less kill and damn them. Especially since for all she knew the boss was the one who rejected her loan. I always wonder what evil monster lady gave to the previous guy(s) who gave her the first 2 extensions (though she was such a self-entitled bitch it was probably just a "thanks, bye").
  • August M.  - Barely Decent
    avatar
Had okay moments(Few) but was very stupid. Sad that Raimi made this after Spider-Man 3, should have made Evil Dead 4.
  • The Hardcore Kid
    avatar
Oh come on, Phelous! Drag Me to Hell is a masterpiece! It's sort of like one of those tributes to the old classic cheesy horror/comedy genre films just like Sam Raimi's Evil Dead movies.

To tell you the truth, I'd prefer to watch this rather than all those other shitty horrors that have been released today.
  • LikaLaruku
    avatar
I'd rather watch Zombies of Mass Destruction. You know, the unapologetically blatant pro-gay, pro-liberal, anti-religion, rednecks-are-stupid zombie flick.
  • Sylveria
    avatar
Watch Evil Dead and this back to back. It does not stand up well. Sure its better than most of the PG-13 junk or torture porn we get today but that hardly makes it a "masterpiece"
  • bonesawmachete
    avatar
i agree 100%. i found myself laughing my ass off. this review acted like it was supposed to be a serious movie. the jump scares are meant to be funny. to me this movie is right up there with evil dead 2.
  • Gynoid
    avatar
Agreed. This film was filled with tongue-in-cheek humor. True, I don't like the kitten killing but, it's not real or anything this isn't Cannibal Ferox. Anyway, I loved this movie. I've seen it like, 3 times. It's just black comedy like Evil Dead. I loved it.
  • LordNifty
Ever wonder how many professional reviewers give good reviews to movies rather than admit they were confused by a contrived piece of crap? That would explain the positive reviews for this movie, but it is probably for the exploitation of anti-bank sentiments as well. Probably.
  • Hatchet90
You're funny, and what's confusing about this movie? It's about as complex as a spook house at the county fair, and that is what is so great about it.
  • ichithe
    avatar
i liked this movie. it's just kinda "let's see the main character suffer and die horribly for no real reason whatsoever." and for me that worked. sure the jump-scares were cheap but that's kind of what the movie was all about. uh and i actually loved the one with the cellphone-battery goin down
  • ArtticWitchica
    avatar
In my personal opinion she was a lady who yes got cursed for no real reason, but by the end of the movie, she was such a bitch you were practically waving goodbye. I mean she kills a innocent kitten and acts more horrible as the film progressed.

That's why my dad liked it.
  • Shadowflame66
    avatar
She kills a kitten to SAVE HER LIFE.

I don't care WHAT your stance on animal cruelty is, human lives are worth more than a cat's.
  • FullmetalNinja25
    avatar
Great video Phelous, glad to know I'm not the only one who disliked this movie.
  • Zydrate
    avatar
I like this movie but I can see its flaws. It really did consist entirely of jump scares and the protagonist was unlikeable bitch.
  • Circle Down
    avatar
Quite frankly the moment she hurt that kitten I was cheering for her to be dragged to hell in the most brutal way possible.

Stuff like this is pretty much why I don't watch modern horror films all too often.

The sound was off for me, too, but it wasn't intolerable and after a minute I became used to it.
  • THOOM
    avatar
I'm not defending this movie but does it really count as a jump scare if the evil forces are actually knocking you around? Tedious and redundant, yes...but a jump scare?

And you paid 15 bucks for that garbage bin? That was ten dollars too much.
  • Hatchet90  - Ugh...
Anyone who can't find the comedy or flat out fun that this movie offers is no good friend of mine. I've always felt that the best horror movies are the ones that have an inkling of comedy.
  • TheDogSannin  - BOO!
    avatar
Honestly, this movie felt more like a director trying to replicate the magic of the Evil Dead Trilogy and failing.

It's like they put two different scripts together and shot it. Because the attempts at Evil Dead-style humor seemed out of place with the rest of the movie.

And considering the director, that only makes it all the sadder.

Should have just called it Jump Scare! The Motion Picture, and been done with it.

Not to mention that these kinds of 'twist endings' are so damn overused it'd be an ACTUAL twist not to have one at all.
  • SpeedyEric
    avatar
I haven't seen "Drag Me to Hell," but I just saw on IMDB that it has a decent rating of 7 stars out of 10.

Looking at this review, I kinda agree that this film should have been titled "Jump Scare: The Movie."

10:21- The power of heart? ...MA-TI, YOU'RE NEEDED!
  • August M.
    avatar
I know. I was expecting Ma-Ti to appear(Would have been funny if it was at the end of the video to showcase how far Ma-ti had to travel to go to Canada to say his line.)
  • EcchiOtaku
    avatar
Actually this movie kept reminding me of a much better movie, the 1957 film Night of the Demon except that one had a more interesting story, better acting, didn't have any ridiculous jump scares, and had an ending with a similar concept but this one had a suspenseful build up and a more satisfying resolution. Phelous, if you haven't seen it, I highly reccomend watching that to wash down the bitter after taste of this movie.
  • Shado
phelous you dumb shit, get a better recorder or something

also, lol at the portal 2 reference.
  • EarthboundXE
    avatar
This is his only video with the sound like that, so I doubt it's his recording equipment.
  • Phelous
    avatar
Shado you dumb shit, it wasn't working correctly. I'll fix it.
  • NucleaRaptor  - One of your best
    avatar
"It's not over until the fat lady jumpscares" and "oh no,now I'll never find my Standing Liberty quarter ;_;" got legitimate laughs out of me.

The funny part is,I always get annoyed whenever I read comments like "I'VE ALWAYS LOVED THIS MOVIE BUT NOW I WATCHED YOUR REVIEW AND I TOTALLY AGREE HOW MUCH IT SUCKS HERP DERP",but man, this is kinda one of those cases. I enjoyed the fuck out of this flick, but looking back at it,it really is "Jump Scare: The Movie".

Also,I like how Phelous D1 is too awesome to die at the end of his reviews. :3
  • TheBlackMage
    avatar
After seeing your review I still am confused about how many rave reviews this thing got. The message? Doing your job(and not necessarily doing what is just self-serving) will get you punished by Satan. Bravo movie. You've just erased the line between what is arguably moral and being outright evil.
  • PC
    avatar
So many scenes in this movie seemed...hilarious. Why do directors like these think that making scenes really gross or outrageous makes them scary? And the cgi was crap too.
  • EarthboundXE
    avatar
I've only seen this movie with the Rifftrax, and I thought it was alright.

Not super great or anything, but decent.
  • BrentJohn  - Oh, come on!
    avatar
I usually like your reviews Phelous, but you were really unfair about this movie. Yes, I agree there were WAY too many jump scares, but the movie is meant to be kinda dumb. I wasn't able to see the ending coming, and I thought I paid close attention to the movie.

But you don't have to enjoy this movie. I can see why some wouldn't enjoy it. Just be a little bit more fair in your future reviews next time.
  • Phelous
    avatar
How was I unfair? I pointed out what I felt made the film fail and why I found it dumb for the wrong reasons.
  • Yeahno
Meant to be dumb or not, it's still dumb.

And that's why it sucks. I don't think anything needs to be said.

Except that you can't just say Phelous isn't "fair" just because his opinion doesn't match yours.

I thought this movie was stupid when I saw it. And his review seemed completely fair to me. Don't cry so much.
  • executor
    avatar
Heh. He was much more fair here than with the "Resident Evil" reviews and can it be, that you are just angered by the fact, that Phelous makes fun about the completly non-thinking-audience that didn't see that ending coming? You know, about the audience you were a part of? X-D

For me, I'm 100% percent agreeing with Phelous here, even if I wouldn't be so generous at the end, cause this stupid-obvious "twist" (I really don't think that it was one, cause it was pretty much spelled out in slow-mo for the audience twenty minutes before happening) at the end was the most insulting "hey, nobody expected this, right?!?" bullshit I've seen in the last few years. Specially the twenty minutes of nothing at the end while waiting for the big "reveal" was just painfull.

Ok, "Dead Snow" pretty much had the exact same ending with the cold coin, that one of the girls puts in her boyfriends pockets at the beginning, but even there it didn't came of as so overly stupid.
  • Souledge94  - wow thats sad
the fact, that Phelous makes fun about the completly non-thinking-audience that didn't see that ending coming? You know, about the audience you were a part of? X-D

Wow making fun of others. Thats mature.
  • D.C
    avatar
You haven't seemed to have figured it out, that Phelous and many other people at Channel Awesome aren't exactly "fair".

Making a movie that just expectedly tosses jump scares at you isn't real horror. If you want true horror, you need something like The Shining or Psycho, something that actually builds suspense and holds an atmosphere akin to true despair. And as the movie shows, the girl was doomed ever since she dropped the envelope, it was obvious.
  • Daniel Kay
    avatar
"Making a movie that just expectedly tosses jump scares at you isn't real horror."

    So... damn... seconded...

I personally class everything that relies overly on jump scares instead of atmosphere as non horror. "Overly long jump scare" maybe.
  • SpecterM91
    avatar
So, like... You do realize this isn't supposed to be a gut wrenching, soul crushing horror movie, right? It's in the vein of Evil Dead, Shaun of the Dead, Fright Night, etc. Horror themed comedy is not a new thing, people should seem shocked by it at this point. Far too often do people just miss the point. Not calling Phelous out, just people in general. Going into a movie that exists to be cheesy and saying "this isn't scary!" is completely missing the point.
  • Sylveria
    avatar
Do you have a clue what the word "cheesey" means? Also you can't just slap on the "Horror/comedy" label onto movies to justify them not being "gut wrenching, soul crushing" if they aren't scary OR funny. Movies have to earn that label, not use it as an excuse for failing at both parts.
  • SpecterM91
    avatar
Yes, I do, and I can even spell it correctly. But do you have any idea what "horror-comedy" means? Because it's not an earned title, it's a genre. It doesn't matter if you don't like it, it's an established genre and no amount of moaning about a lack of scares of laughs will morph the genre into something else. It's like claiming certain movies aren't comedies because they didn't make you laugh. Don't like the movie? Awesome, do your thing. But knocking points from this particular movie because it wasn't scary when it wasn't really trying to be scary is just dim. I swear, if Evil Dead 2 had come out this year, half you people would be damning it like you are Drag Me to Hell; Over the top acting? Comedy? A vague plot? Pointless jump scares? All there.
  • Phelous
    avatar
The movie didn't know what it was trying to be. If you try to tell me those stupid jumps scares were in there to be funny I'll laugh at THAT.
  • SpecterM91
    avatar
They're no different than the pointless jump scares in the Evil Dead series.
