Yeah, I rented this movie for my birthday a couple years ago and was really turned off by how the characters were so much in the uncanny valley.
BTW, Phelous? That phenomenon regarding anime characters looking "white" when they're supposed to be ethnically Japanese is called "mukokuseki".
I'm thinking the character designer(s) for Degeneration must have used a random Japanese idol for visual reference/inspiration for Leon in this instance, hence the AZN-ocity.

No more voting on user posts? That makes me so IRATE! Let's face it, commenting is ruined! Oh well, I'm sure my heart will go on despite this super important loss.
I'm shocked how this really was more of a critique and not just a play-by-play riff or a literal re-view as usual. It looks like you might have avoided your usual style to make sure others can watch it without it being as spoiled as any other movie you've looked at (most of those movies deserve that kind of treatment though) I like either style and it's nice to see things mixed up for the new season.

....is because they don't want to.
I mean, some people do think that zombies are still human, and shooting them in the head means that you're shooting a human's had.
It's basic denial of human nature. It's hard to impose the belief that zombies are no longer human to some people, and such people do exist in the original Dawn of the Dead and Highschool of the Dead anime.
-
... okay, I have a lot of respect for you because I like some of your films, but you totally just got a low score from me. Simply for three reasons.
#1) I'm a Mega-Uber Resident Evil Nerd. I know (by heart) and love all the Games and Stories, and wish the "movies" (all but Degeneration) were never made. Paul W.S. Andersen should BURN IN A PIT OF Flames. But I digress.
#2) ... You titled this "Resident Evil: Afterlife," which is a real Resident Evil movie.. found here
http://www.imdb.com/ title/tt1220634/
... What the hell dude...
Get your damn titled correct.
#3) The point of the movie was story connecting. Claire is suppose to be investigative and less battle-like. Leon is slightly emo and hard-core from the military. That's how they were built after RE:2
If you're going to rip apart a cherished series a lot of nerds like (including yourself) be ready for haters, and downers. Of course, it's a zombie, shoot it in the head... Of course, there will be STUPID people who don't know what to do.
Sorry for the low score mate. This made me feel ashamed to even consider watching a lot of your films. I think I'll stick with Critic for now on.

Wow... that was cold, dude. But in response:
1) How is saying that you like the Resident Evil franchise a criticism of Phelous? Phelous obviously is a fan Resident Evil as well... that's why he's dressed up as a character from the game, and that's why he keeps on making fun of the crappy live action movies. Seriously, learn how to insult someone before you start trolling.
2) It's pretty obvious Phelous mixed up the title cards as a joke. That's why when he said the title "Resident Evil: Degeneration" he added "What, were you expecting something else?" He even said he was reviewing "Afterlife" for real next week.
3) Phelous said in the beginning of the review that the point of the movie was connecting. For the connecting to make sense, however, Claire and Leon need to start like they were at the end of the earlier game and end how they were at the beginning of the later one. The characters did not behave that way, and hence their actions did not make sense in the context of the storyline.
While I agree that this wasn't Phelous's best review, deciding to not watch anything else he makes because you didn't like ONE of his reviews is pretty childish. Grow up.

Phelous has a point about the whole "telling everyone to shoot them in the head" thing. I mean, isn't shooting zombies in the head common knowlege, like driving a stake through a vampire's heart, or shooting a werewolf with silver bullets?
It doesn't make any sense that they would be so dumb about it.

Being negative = Trolling? I just don't get that. That's why I prefer to "troll" in a manner making fun of actual trolls (like stealing the "all-important" FIRST comment) like Phelous instead. What's the point of insulting or getting mad at strangers on the Internet who you'll most likely never truly know?
-
It seems to me that Phelous actually gave this a fairly positive, bordering on mediocre rating. He gave valid points on what he did and didn't like, and he never "ripped it apart" at any time. (Their are enough critics on this site who do that anyway)
I'm sure Phelous is also a "Mega-Uber Resident Evil Nerd", (just look at that awesome Barry uniform). But I don't think he's not so much of a fan to allow it to blind him to the point where he couldn't give a logical analysis of a movie's high points and drawbacks, even if he loved the franchise he still saw things in this movie he didn't like.
Your entitled to your opinion, but I thought this review was spot on in regards to the film as a whole. It has it's flaws but I would still recommend it if your a fan.

I will reply to Katze too.
1) And this is a reason to give a low score because...?
2) "Of course, there will be STUPID people" who don't even understand a joke, even though explicitely stated as a joke in the video itself.
3) Meh. Fair enough, to each his own.
I also have to agree and say that this is a weak entry for Phelous, but to stop watching him because of one video? Dumb. Your loss.
Btw, how many times did the NC make crappy vids? More than I can count. Yet you still watch him?
-
04.14.2011 - 04:11 | dennett316
1) Pointless statement, next.
2) It was a joke, get a sense of humour and the stick out your butt, he even acknowledges this in the video.
3) He didn't say Claire's character was far off, just that she had little to do in the 3rd act and acted a little dopey at times....and he's right on both counts. As for Leon, I don't know how much clearer he could possibly have made it. He mentions how he changed between RE2 and RE4 and that in RE4 he didn't act as robotically as in DeGeneration despite the extra training he'd gone through. Perhaps something happened to him in the small time between RE4 and the start of the movie, but it's never mentioned. The character is slightly off...get over it.
4) He didn't rip it apart, are you mad? And the stupid people who don't know what to do were told explicitly what to do - Phelous highlighted this in the video pretty clearly - and still didn't do it....it's a valid criticism. Being an uber-fan doesn't mean you just accept everything blindly or ignore issues when they're explicitly pointed out to you.
As for your overly dramatic and attention seeking final line...that is surely the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen written on here.

1. "I'm a Mega-Uber Resident Evil Nerd. I know (by heart) and love all the Games and Stories, and wish the "movies" (all but Degeneration) were never made. Paul W.S. Andersen should BURN IN A PIT OF Flames."
So...you agree with him. Wow, no wonder you're so pissed.
"You titled this "Resident Evil: Afterlife," which is a real Resident Evil movie.. found here "
2. It's called trolling, because everyone saw it coming. He's already talked at length about Afterlife, and he even mentioned that Degeneration didn't overuse slow motion. You know, like Afterlife did. If you were such a Mega-Uber Resident Evil nerd, you'd know this. I know this, and I haven't even seen Afterlife.
3. Why would Leon be slightly emo and hard core from the military? He wasn't slightly emo when he was in the Secret Service - not for the entire duration of the plague-insect-infected Resident Evil 4. You'd think he'd get depressed when he himself was infected, or when giant multi-legged things came out of people's necks, but no. So why should he be gritty now?
"Of course, it's a zombie, shoot it in the head... Of course, there will be STUPID people who don't know what to do."
Yeah, but you'd think you'd know what to do when you were EXPLICITLY TOLD WHAT THE HELL TO DO.
"Sorry for the low score mate. This made me feel ashamed to even consider watching a lot of your films. I think I'll stick with Critic for now on."
Really? You're one of those pricks who says "I LOVE EVERYTHING YOU'VE DONE EVER, BUT THIS ONE REVIEW OF YOURS HAS AN OPINION THAT DOESN'T AGREE WITH MINE, SO I'M NEVER WATCHING YOU AGAIN?"
Don't let the door smack your ass on the way out.

"rip apart a cherished series"? Really? He said it was average as a movie, and recommended it to anyone who found any of the clips interesting. Katze, you sound like John after NC's "The Room" review.
ALSO: If this really made you "feel ashamed" to even think about watching any of his other reviews, hate to say it, but that makes you a pompous asshole fanboy, of the variety that makes everyone else in the fandom look bad by association.

Oh, I saw this on TV last year. It's the only other Resident Evil movie I can tolerate.
Claire looks like a ditsy bubblebrain without a thought in her head. Her vacant stare & gigantic eyes are almost as creepy as Ayumi Hamasaki's head. Kill it with fire! DX
The senator reminds me of that screaming Pee-Wee Herman look-alike from the Langoliers.
Lol, I like how the new remix of the theme song is both super cool & really over the top.

I dunno, I think Leon's almost emotionless style made sense in this. By now he's survived Raccoon City, and the whole Las Plagas thing. It's not emotionless to me, just supremely jaded.
I mean, if you go from zombies, to mind controlled villagers and godawful creatures, going back to zombies seems pretty easy. A real "ho-hum...I guess I have to take care of this" attitude.
But that's probably just me.
-
04.14.2011 - 06:27 | Tactlesscat
No, in Resident Evil 4 he was Jaded, or else he wouldn't have been making all those quips.
Seriously once you move into Salazar's part of the game Leon just gets this attitude like "You know what, screw the chainsaw wielding nut and the armored blind Wolverine knockoffs, I'm doing my best Bruce Willis-impersonation and nobody is going to stop me."
Only someone extremely "what the hell ever" about zombies (Either of the Undead, Insect mind control, or Voodoo variety) could ever act like that.

So Leon goes from eh sorta cop, to a self aware sarcastic b movie action hero, and then...to a robot.
Well that seems reasonable coming from the same company that turned Jill from a brunette ass kicker into a BLONDE PONYTAIL HOTTIE ZERO SUIT WEARING KUNG FU BEAST, and Chris from a pretty in shape cop into HOLY SHIT LOOK AT THOSE FUCKING BICEPS LIKE HE'S KENSHIRO

I haven't watched this one yet, been contemplating getting it since I'm a huge old fan of RE but hasn't been that thrilled about the recent games. Or movies. Great review though, reminds me to go look for it cheap somewhere. :P
I just thought it was official (the official sourcebook Umbrella Archives) that the T-Virus didn't infect through bites but instead through water (at least that was the case in Raccoon City). It would also mean all our great characters would be zombies by now. Oh well, I guess logic doesn't always match together. :P
I do think Leon seems like a boring fool here. He seems boring, more so than in RE4, where I thought he acted so careless and made jokes so often that it seemed out of place. Maybe it's just me though.

I was expecting some kind of joke about how you were going to review Afterlife, but I definitely wasn't expecting a review of Degeneration. Nonetheless, I'm glad you took a look at this one.
I saw Degeneration myself and agree that it was just ok. As you said, it's far, far superior to the live action movies, so that's a big plus already, and they do get some important things right. It was nice to see Claire again and, even if she was a bit wide-eyed, she had enough moments where she was good to make me happy she was there. The overall story also could have been a lot worse.
That being said, Leon's lack of emotion really bothered me and there were enough moments where the characters did stupid things that I got annoyed by it. Still, not a bad movie, just average.
I'm looking forward to the actual review of Afterlife next week. I just know it's going to be entertaining. Also, I have heard there's going to be another CG movie like this one called Damnation coming out sometime. Are you interested in that one as well Phelous?

I agree over the whole "Not shooting Zombies in the head even though they've been told to" but here's a point I'd like to make.
They weren't trained to kill, they were trained to subdue and rescue, and even though SWAT does kill people on occasions, I think that just the thought of shooting someone in the head is difficult for someone to do, I mean...you're taking someone's life. Granted, they are zombies, but they still look human.
All that aside, great review, I was looking forward to it, too bad it wasn't longer.

Wait a minute...Terrorists attacking people with viruses that create zombie outbreaks, all to make people pay for turning their friends/loved ones/etc. into zombies in the first place...Then a pharmaceutical company gets involved & tries to manufacture a cure...
That's the story to Dead Rising!! You know, Capcom's OTHER highly successful zombie franchise! Out of curiosity, when did this film come out? o_O

I was of the same on-the-fence opinion about this movie, the part of this review that got me was Panda's new rendition of the Oh Phelous song. While the instrumentals were awesome, with a more rock feeling for the new "season" of Phelous, he CANNOT sing with a rock feel. I liked his lackadaisical voice for the original, more smooth, version of the song, but when he tries to be more aggressive, with a rock feel, it just sounds silly.
If the lyrics could be sung by someone else and Panda keeps doing the composing, mixing, and instrumental performance, then the song would be really awesome!

I love this movie already =D thanks phelous i never knew this came out.
oh thank god those awful live action movie never used leon ....please tell me they never had leon in these movies
