05.16.2011 - 19:36 | Fuery87I thought everyone liked Eight. It's just everything else about the movie that sucks.

He's a real badass for just sipping his Tea and not expressing emotion after someone just got vaporized. That's just as cool as walking away from an explosion without looking.
Good list (Even if I almost know nothing of Dr Who) but my favorite Dr Who moment was when Max Headroom made a cameo and received a spanking.

*phases into the first page* pffft, this thing wasn't even deadlocked. FAR too easy.
I get that this wasn't a great movie by far (thanks to Nash) but I'm still blinded by how HARDCORE you made the 8th seem, so I still gotta ask: Did you genuinely like any of those scenes in the "countdown"? This seemed like a "least favorite scenes" list at times.
I've been watching since "The Shakesphere Code" (YES, I'm a new Whovian,I'm so stupid for not knowing of it before, blah blah blah, who cares), and I love seeing these look backs on the old series despite only seeing Arc of Infinty, The Five Doctors, and The Armageddon Factor.
With at least 5 staff members being fans, I wouldn't be surprised to see a fan film here for the 50th anniversary. :P

I think there's something you're forgetting about the new series, AL THE FUCKING TIME LORDS ARE DEAD!!!!! So with 9th doctor coming back is understandable! He's the last of his fucking kind, he'd be kind of lonely, and with him crying over The Masters death, again, last of his kind. How would you react if you found out one of you're kind is still alive and then he dies. You'd be pretty fucking upset.

McGann is an underrated Doctor, getting his success only in the audio dramas (one of which was semi-animated for the BBC's site, a remake of the unfinished 4th Doctor episode Shada) which I only got to hear because I found out that BBC7 was available online and aired them. I didn't even mind the "half-human" aspect because I thought they'd do something interesting with it. Apparently they just ignored it. Guess looms are more popular. (Stupid Lungburrow.)
And whoever did the titles for this episode did a fantastic job.

03.03.2011 - 01:04 | ChaosChaserI concur. I quit watching the new series at season 4 because the scripts were getting ridiculous. I'm on board with Matt Smith now because of Steven Moffat.

One of the greatest doctors ever.
It's a shame he hadn't gotten over his regeneration hangover by the time the episode finished.
Half-human. *snicker* Yeah right. He probably grabbed some DNA from Grace during the first kiss to confuse the Master. It was a nice trick, temporarily merging it in to the mother's side of his DNA for the episode.
Oh well. Hopefully McGann will appear in an anniversary episode in 2013.

03.02.2011 - 21:01 | aunt_zeldaFor a horrible couple of minutes, I thought you were being serious with this list. That was so scary, never do that again!
Because, really, the movie was DREADFUL and Paul McGann did everything he could to shine through (he's one of my top three Doctors. Possibly my favorite, even.)
Have you listened to the audio adventures? THOSE contain the 8th Doctor's best moments. The stupid movie is best forgotten.
For the record, I'm STILL disturbed by Amy trying to rape Eleven. NOT FUNNY. NOT OK!!! Perfect example of the 'Rape is Ok When It's Female on Male' trope, though.

"As long as it's an awesome character like Rose."
Tee hee, oh you and your jokes Phelous. ^_^ Though, admittedly, Amy isn't much better.
Funny list. Now go listen to the 8th Doctor's audio series in order to make a proper one. Seriously though, they do show just how McGann is ten times a more awesome Doctor than the movie allowed him to be (and even within that train-wreck he didn't do that bad). He's up there with Troughtan, Pertwee, Tennant and T.Baker in my top 5 Doctors anyway.

When the Doctor cried over the death of the Master, it was obvious it was because he saw himself as now being totally alone. It was a great moment.
I liked McGann's film. My favorite moment was the girl stopping the cop; "Don't shoot him, he's not crazy... he's British!" DOCTOR: "Am I? I guess I am!"

Part of the Doctor's character is the fact that he is an ALIEN. We're not really SUPPOSED to identify with him - we're supposed to identify with the companions, want to go along with this magical man and see the wonders of the universe.
The Doctor is meant to be the guide, the person we can never truly understand and there's so much mystery about him, but the idea of him being half-human makes it so we understand him more when we're not really supposed to.
It also takes away the idea of a benevolent alien who believes in the potential of humankind by making him a part of our species - thus he protects us not out of a sense of justice but rather familial ties.

Id would also go as far as to say that the fact the Doctor is an alien that we're NOT suppose to be able relate to is a critical point; that keeps him from being a complete marry sue character.
His odd behavior and superior attitude is suppose to be a little alien and confusing. Which also gives him an advantage in confusing enemies. This is why Master is such a good opponent for the Doctor because he doesn't get befuddled by him like others do.

To expand on the 'identifying with the Companion' point: the one thing I thought was the most interesting about the earliest episodes of the series was that the Doctor didn't even appear to be the main character over half the time (and he wasn't). The Doctor was more McGuffin than character. We were actually following Barbara and Ian, not the Doctor. Also for the first season and a half it was usually Ian saving the day.
And by 'the day' I mean 'Susan and/or Barbara'.
Ah, those silly silly early television women folk. Most plot lines would had been over within the first 15 minutes of each the serial if it weren't for them getting captured.... That or the TARDIS getting locked away.... or both. It took up until Vicky before they realized it might be smart on occasion to keep one person back at the ship. But that might just be because she offhandedly tried to murder Nero. God, I loved that sequence.
...
...
Right! Freeze ray!
Back on point, initially the Doctor couldn't give two craps about humanity other than something to investigate, explore, and move on from. Technically, the Doctor was a bit of a dick. In the end the whole point of the Ian and Barbara arc was that the Doctor softened up towards humanity over time due to his experiences with them. He was not "connecting to his maternal roots."
Did the movie writer ever apologize for that blunder?

Very nice reply. My question is Linkara, "What better way to save humanity then by understanding and relating with humanity?" The doctor started coming to earth because of his interest with it, sort of a second home of sorts. Several versions but one truth always stayed the same, "There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, where the sea's asleep and the rivers dream, people made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there's injustice and somewhere else the tea is getting cold. Come on, Ace, we've got work to do." Sylvester McCoy

Phelous, do you know where I could watch the older doctor episodes?
I've watched all the episodes of the reboot and I'm desperately wanting to watch the older doctor episodes.
I know some were lost in a fire, but I still want to watch as many as I can.
Do you, or anyone else on this site for that matter, have a place where I can watch them?

There are some episodes on Youtube (not many, usually those with Daleks). I think BBC have released a few Classic Series DVDs, but I haven't seen them anywhere, so they were probably only released in Britain, so if you're not a Brit, I guess you have to import them (or only watch those that are illegally uploaded on youtube).
There are also a couple of episodes that are missing.

03.02.2011 - 22:38 | TheMentalLizardI LOVE The Eighth Doctor. He's one of my favorites (even though I've only seen the movie and listened to one audio drama) my other favorites are Four, Ten, and Eleven.
"The Doctor Makes Glass His Bitch!" OMG that got me laughing so hard! XD I'm probably going to remember that tomorrow in class and burst out laughing, confusing everyone in the room.

Too bad the movie didn't go to series. They were planning on bring back the older Doctors for stories when McGann goes on break. Wouldn't that have been cool? Why does the Doctor kissing someone bother so many people? The Doctor has a granddaughter! I rather like the movie myself. It isn't perfect, but it is still entertaining. McGann is a great Doctor!
