....but this review felt a bit dull....at least there was constant what the fuck-ery and plain old terrible scenes at almost every turn to make it easier to make fun of in some of the older movies you reviewed...but there wasn't much here. It might just be me, because I saw this movie already. Once again, I'M BLAMING THE MOVIE for being so bland, it can't be made as hilarious as, say, the House of the Dead movies.

*Gets camera (that's WAY better than a shotgun) ready to fight off commentators thinking I'm hating on one of my favorite reviewers*

I'm saddened by the fact that I can't think of ONE recent horror movie... or one in general that the characters aren't made out to be idiots of the highest fucking caliber just for the plot to work....although Scream 4 is looking promising.

Oh, and I'm very late on this, but where does that "__'s infected with the T-Virus! *dun dun dun*" quote originate from specifically?
  • honestiago
    avatar
The T-virus quote is a reference to Resident Evil.
The "duh-duh-duh-duh!!!!" is from House of the Dead: Funny Version.
  • ggbhtg
    avatar
I know it's a RE ref, but which game? I also meant the musical sting that quickly follows the line and arm waving, not the "duh duh duh! Curien!" quote.

The earliest I can think of seeing it was in the first RE movie review (or maybe earlier than that) where some guy ran out of his house saying the T-Virus line and all, then going right back into the house. It looked like a fan film or something.
  • edzoologist
    avatar
Well, the T-virus comes from Resident Evil. The dadadadah comes from an Uwe Boll movie I think.
  • Zeky0Zeky
No, it was clip from Mortal Komedy, a parody that Phelous was making back then.

Glad you covered the movie though, it's been a steaming pile of shit since it was released and it's turn was long over due. It fucking made theaters on its release. Retarded critics.

Spoony already reviewed this some time ago on YouTube, but he didn't show any clips of the movie itself, so I guess yours is better if the viewer HASNT yet seen the movie.(I did when it was new) If you have, I'd go with his, because in all honesty, I think he covered it a bit better; not saying a whole lot, just a bit.(Bring on the flames)

I agree with you. When you've already seen a movie, seeing it's review on this site isn't as awesome as it should be. Luckily for me, I don't watch horror movies (I prefer horror games), so it doesn't matter to me what he's reviewing.

yeah, the rabies thing is full of shit. If it's rabies, QUARANTINE AND STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM THE INFECTED! I studied rabies, and the only way to not get infected, is to run away and quarantine yourself from the infected. End of story.

And the cameraman is doing the exact opposite of what a cameraman should do. I've known a cameraman from Al Jazeera English, and when he was in Cairo a few weeks ago for the protests, the first thing he should do as a cameraman is to NOT POINT AT THE PERSON WITH THE GUN! It's a rule that should be followed by every cameraman working for a news channel.

And thus, This is why [REC] is superior.

I love [REC] because just like what Phelous said, it envokes a sense of fear and paranoia surrounding government control of situations. It's actually a criticism towards the Spanish Government's handling of the May 2003 bombings of Madrid.

This failed to capture the exact theme from the original. If you want a shot-for-shot remake of a film, make sure the themes that were in the original is faithfully used in the remake. They could have made Quarantine a criticism of FEMA or Homeland Security, but instead it became a generic remake of a superior Spanish film.

I remember this movie...i remember getting bored and confused...and thats about it..
  • Moreno X
I remember seeing this movie, and it really wasn't that great. I'm not the type of guy who watch films like these because I remember that there was nothing to see so I ask my friend if he wants to see Quarantine instead of going home soon. Probably the biggest mistake I made. Well, except for my friend, he said he enjoyed. Please, after the movie was over, some kids (yes Phelous, the theater I went to see this movie were kids) who were younger than me were annoyed and duped. Either way, they didn't like it.

So yeah, this movie is forgettable and it should be that way. Spoony already bash this movie, and it's great you have to chance to bash this one too. Good job Phelous.

All I have to say is that my father is a Firefighter/Paramedic. He does both at his station so it is a feasible reason.
  • Phelous
    avatar
Yeah they can do both but a call for someone screaming I wouldn't think would have them specifically bring in firemen with a firetruck and such.
  • honestiago

Sigh... while I do love Jennifer Carpenter, I am glad I never saw this movie. I liked the original, though I was half-asleep when I watched it (=P). In [REC], the girl in the attic was some sort of demon child, and the movie implied that that was what was causing the disease. Through most of the movie, no one knew what was going on or why they were being trapped. Changing the disease to rabies makes the situation in the apartment complex seem banal and the government's reaction seem contrived (why quarantine everyone? because the plot said so!).
  • dennett316

The possession aspect of the original films wasn't mentioned in the first, it was merely hinted at with the newspaper clippings and a few crosses on the wall, it was never made clear until the second film.

    I LOVE THE COUCH!
  • Victor Clark  - Why this movie?
    avatar
I personally love Quarantine, and I'm a bit surprised to see this in the same category as some of your previous reviews. It has great makeup & gore, there are a lot of good scary moments, the atmosphere was creepy, and I think the rabies thing is a big improvement over the explaination they had in REC. I know it has it's problems, but I don't consider it to be a bad horror movie at all.
  • dennett316
    avatar
There was no explanation in the original REC, even when the government guy came in they were working on the wrong assumption that it was a disease of some kind. Making it a real disease in the remake makes it all the more stupid that no one was restrained in any way....in the original they were handcuffed and separated from the main group.
The original had the better atmosphere because it was more natural in terms of performance, shot choice and tone. Many shots in the remake looked staged, very few in the original did.

It's fine if you like this movie of course. But just because it's not an obviously terrible movie doesn't mean I won't review it and I explained why I felt the movie didn't work.
  • CageAquarium  - Victor Clark - To Answer Your Question...
Just watch Phelous old videos. He has a recurring theme of sticking it to movies with stupid, unlikable characters who act in an unrealistic manner. Nobody restraining zombies, the black cop following the little girl and reaching out to her instead of pumping two rounds into her head, the governments reaction, etc. I like the rabies idea too and the gore was good but the characters were acting all kinds of stupid making them and the movie a valid target.

I've seen Rec, but not Quarantine. It wasn't great, but still watchable.

Anyhow, after seeing this review, I'm glad I didn't!

LOL it's the only movie I can think of that has the ending on the DVD box.
  • CageAquarium  - Agree with Dolphin
Glad these horrible Point of View movies died with Cloverfield and didn't catch on. What an incredibly lazy, uncreative way to save money on shooting, not to mention incredibly annoying to watch.
  • ttime23  - Wah! I'm confused!!
What's going on here!? No TV behind you? No video game boxes?! No computer even?!? AAAHHH! The world has gone insane! People with T-vir...I mean R-virus have invaded my home and has made everyone as dumb as macaroni and paste!! I need to zoom in and out randomly while I scream and bicker with people I don't even know to make things look DRAMATIC!!
Yeah. I'm glad I really didn't see this. Doesn't seem worth my time, so thank you for falling on the super camera for this, Phelous.

Well for giving a negative review for a film I like, you did do it justice. You did point out everything that I had problems with too. I don't call this film perfect but I enjoy seeing it.

If it was Dexter Morgan instead of Debra, I think this film would have ended quite differently . . .
  • Poddington

If it was Debra Morgan she'd have fucked the entire Fire Department, cursed at everything and everyone and got drunk before getting saved once again by Dexter and then cried about her questionable choices...

You got foam on your face, you big disgrace.
Biting those people all over the place.
WE WILL, WE WILL [REC] YOU!

    Thoughts:

    - Rage rabies, baby!

    - I'm a fan of the lost-footage type of horror film, but there aren't a lot of movies that pull it off well (Cloverfield and Blair Witch being the two off the top of my head that worked for me). The problem in this movie is that while you expect the civilians to be somewhat stupid, you don't expect the cops, firefighters, and CDC personnel to be somewhat stupid.

Weirdly, I still kinda like this movie. Let's chalk it up to a guilty pleasure and move on.

    - So which is better - Rage rabies (Quarantine) or demonic possession that spreads like... well, rage rabies (REC)?

    - I remember the trailer for this movie managed to completely spoil the ending (the reporter getting dragged off). Smart ad campaign.

    - Yay! Gruesome off-screen death for Phelous... or did you die at all?

    Good review.

That seen where you inserted the laugh track really didn't need it. When the woman jumped out I started laughing before the laugh track started.
I watch this movie twice before and always got distracted by the time the CDC guys came in. It wasn't till this review that I realized they were from the CDC.
  • Phelous

I know I laughed there too when watching it and that's why I put it there.
  • PirateFTCaptain
Oh, the dumb excuses they look for to keep the jump scares and deaths going, and to keep the camera pointed at it all...

Note to self: In case of rabid, violent people, use a camera.

Remember - in case of zombie/ rabies outbreaks, carry a caemra, because the infected will just growl at you then walk away to eat someone else.
  • Panzermanathod
I thought the movie was... ehh.

This was one of the few movies Phelous has reviewed that I have seen at some point. Actually one of two. The other was The Ruins. Which gave me a retarded character overload...
  • FireFighter214

Very good review Pheleous. I'm really sorry if this was already said, but I want to clear up that it is valid for the Fire Department to be called to medical emergencies because they are considered "First Responders." Fire Departments can usually get to scenes much faster than an ambulance because there are more Fire Departments than hospitals, so they usually respond to medical calls in anticipation of having to stabilize someone long enough so that an ambulance can arrive.
Anyway, keep up the great work. It seems like there is endless supply of bad horror movies for you to review.

Loved the use of the house of the dead joke.
The only thing I liked about quarantine was that the Woman died at the end (Which was also shown in the commercials and on the poster, way to spoil the movie idiot ads) She would not shut up, it was her screaming over and over and over.
  • iwasborntostare
I actually like movies like these. The "POV" perspective kinda hits a little home for me. I'm a news photographer at a television station in Sacramento, CA. I'm in weird situations where I have to film things that usually aren't seen to the public (it doesn't make air, but it's still filmed anyway. I've yet to be in a situation where I'm being chased by rabid people out to kill me or zombies. If I am....I'll be sure to have my camera rolling as i'm being eaten alive..I'll have the rabid zombie post it on the internet so you all can enjoy.

yaknow, it's funny cus i was just watching this movie today and was just blown away by how bad it was.

you definately hit a ton of the same gripes i had with the movie too except one thing...the news camera man not turning his light on while recording except for the scenes where it was called for in the plot in which he was immediately told to turn it back off.

for teh life of me i cannot think of a single instance in which a cameraman, especially a news cameraman would ever record in the dark or in dimly lit areas without his light on.

and when he DID actually turn the light on to his camera, it's span vared horribly in degrees of how much lighting it gave off, none of which were even close to how much light those news cameras actually DO give off.

they're supposed to illuminate the reporter as well as a good portion of what's behind them, not a small little bit of light just to sillhouette the reporter.

not to mention how strong he must be to have been able to succesfully squash a rat to the point of splattering all over the floor while wearing sneakers...

oh! and how daft was the landlord of that apartment to not have noticed the giant wall size labcages full of rats the dude from boston had in his apartment?

in the original ~which i have no idea why they even remade it for an american audience when dubbing or subbing would have been loads cheaper and a bettter watch to boot.~ the tenant of that room had a little girl with him he smuggled out of a hospital, that i could see a landlord not paying too much suspicion to but a wall size lab cage with squeaking rats???

there's enough junk in this film to do several reviews about it tbh. thanks for doing one on it.

p.s: I also find it hard to believe in this day and age that ANYONE in los angeles would have to have what CDC means explained to them, let alone the audience.

that whole "what's cdc mean?" line just made my brain hurl when i heard it.
