Nice run through. I always wondered what happened in games like this and RE1 but I couldn't ever bring myself to just go back and play them. I like my modern day graphics and inventory screens. RE4 was as far back as I could tolerate. I do play old platformers, but with those there's no inventory screens or awkward controls and such.
I hope you do more Let's Plays. If not Silent Hill games, there's plenty of other stuff. I'm still banking on Amnesia The Dark Descent. It certainly has some "other world" aspects to it.

It was H.P. Lovecraft that said "The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown."
That is what most horror works fail at; they quantify the evil that works against the hero/player. Silent Hill succeeds at making the thing that works against you mysterious, unknown... you don't know its goals, its means, or even its origins.
Great LP Phelous. Do more.

01.09.2011 - 08:58 | princeshadowHaving recently played through the original Silent Hill, the second one(didn't really care for it), and now the third one.
I'm gonna have to go with the third, but that's partially from the fact that it's one of the few horror survival games that literally scared/startled me("Protip: When faced with a demonic force, kick it's bleedin' arse until it dies" this is the motto I take in horror games, which I admit ruins the experience for me), and the fact that after doing some research you can get a costume for Heather that makes her into a magical girl(Haven't gotten to that yet, working on the first run through, so I don't know what it really looks like as of yet) and you can have her run around with a flamethrower.
My inner pyro and otaku are going to have a field day with that.

:D Awesome LP! It was real fun to watch and to get a taste of Silent Hill 1, plus your commentary was hilarious. x3 Silent Hill definitely set the bar for survival horror genre, emphasizing on symbolism, isolation, horror and the lack of control you have over everything. Like you said, Resident Evil and some others are still in the real world where you can escape to some safe haven, but in Silent Hill, well, nowhere is safe. Especially in the Otherworld! Sure makes you feel chilled, doesn't it?
Hope you do an LP of the other games! Or at least Silent Hill 3. If not, that's cool too. :3
The CGI bloopers were hilarious. XD Really takes the edge off you a bit. Kind of like the features and upgrades in Silent Hill 3.

This game's voice acting is so atrociously bad, I couldn't bear to finish part 16. Seriously, it's horrible. Even at the "dramatic finale", everyone talks like they're in a bad school play by amateur actors, either overacting (the voice actress speaking Dahlia is especially guilty of that) or sounding bored and mechanical.
But what drove me completely bonkers was the fact that there is. A pause. After. Every. Sentence.
Not merely pauses separating different characters' speeches, no, pauses after each sentence within long exposition monologues made by the same character. And every pause has the exact same length. Every sentence sounds completely unconnected to everything else, as if the "script" consisted of just a numbered list of sentences, one sentence per line, and the voice actors were just mechanically reading their parts. Also, no character ever tries to interrupt another, as would be the case in real life.
The worst voice acting however must go to whoever spoke the part of the little girl whatshername. It's painfully obvious that's not a child's voice, but an adult's (probably the same actress who also speaks Dahlia), just pitched high to pretend she is a child. But no real child speaks that way! Not just the dialogue itself (which is the fault of the script writers), no, the inflection and emphasis are all wrong.
Thanks for the play-through, Phelous, but this kills the game for me.
