You shouldn't feel bad for asking this question or making this video. You're right. It's just another one of those cheap gimmicks that companies do to make a quick and easy buck. You know what though? It works. There's enough stupid fuckers out there that will pay 60$ for this, or whatever price tag it has on it. Hell now days you can go get an emulator and play allstars on your desktop FOR FREE. Why buy a damn disc for your Wii to do that? Even the Virtual Console isn't that big a rip off.
But I was already out against Nintendo. There's too much shit behind them. I mean, you can hate Microsoft or Sony for doing their BS, which they have plenty of too(Like Halo ODST) but they're nothing compared to Nintendo. I mean... those fuckers made the VIRTUAL BOY - The biggest bomb of a console to ever have been made. You CAN'T beat that. You can actually hold its entire library of released games in ONE hand. It was licensed by Nintendo and everything though. How about the "Speed board"? Ever heard of that? If any of you readers are next generation kids, do some research. Point is I don't recommend a Wii in the first place. Want a console? Go get yourself a PS3 or a 360 like everyone else. Super Mario Galaxies or the latest Zelda clone isn't worth it. Those Sonic games DAMN sure aren't worth it.
-
You know the only reason bungie made ODST wasbecause "Halo:Chronicles" and the Halo Movie (Yes there was actually one planned)fell through and they felt they needed something to tide over fans with before "Halo: Reach." Sure, we got fucked on the price point, but still, think of the money they lost when their projects fell through

Drake666 said : " Don't forget that using an emulator without owning the cartridge (and the console, I think) is pirating. FYI. "
I'm a programmer myself and I don't think I know anyone who actually cares about piracy laws... and for a reason. Piracy laws are lame at overly restrictive. In this age of Creative Commons, BSD, MIT and other permissive licences it's about time game, movie and music companies start looking for a different business model.
Anyway, even in IT companies people often use illegal software and distribute pirated movies among one another... which is telling of how little people actually care ;-)

01.03.2011 - 18:11 | QarxEmulators from the internet don't always work perfectly, either, not to mention unless you have adapters or whatever, you're not going to get the same experience as the real thing (meaning you'll be playing with a keyboard instead of a controller, something purists like myself have a hard time dealing with unless it's like MSX and would normally use a keyboard). Most official emulators (i.e., the ones on VC) work perfectly, which is why I think they're usually worth it (despite most of them only working on GCN/Classic Controllers).
If you want an example of a not-perfect emulator, go look for Project64 and try playing Wetrix on it: it should play at double speed for no apparent reason >_>.
-
01.03.2011 - 23:03 | SlowkingYou obviously never played Majoras Mask on VC.
A lot of the colors in there are screwed up. For example all the stray fairys and the big fairy are just so wrong.
In fact project64 with Jabos 1.6 emulates it way better than VC.
Nintendo are lazy and I wouldn't be surprised if there are other games with emulation issues on VC.
And if a game plays too fast for you on an emulator, you probably deactivated the frame limiter. Just fyi.
Back to topic:
This new all-stars is only 30€ here on amazon (I guess because it's still sold by amazon and not by sellers), so I guess that's a little more sensible.
However for 4 games even that is a little steep. I mean that's 4 NES games. You could get 4 NES games on VC for 20€. Yes you get a CD and a booklet here but that should imo only be considered extra for the fans, not actually something of worth, since it's pretty shitty.
Ofcourse you have the cost of packaging and stuff here that Nintendo doesn't have for VC, however they obviously did nothing for this release but put the VC emulator with a rom on this disc. So that's the only cost they have here.
To make this thing worth while and make it a real 25 years anniverary edition they should have put all console Marios on this disc.
Which means 1-3 + Lost Levels, Mario World 1+2, Mario64 and Mario Sunshine.
Sunshine should have been a given. It's not like they are getting money for it or will in the foreseeable future, since VC doesn't allow for such big games, and they wouldn't even have needed to write an emulator for it. Just boot the Wii into GC mode, tell it to read only the part of the disc with the game, done!
-
01.03.2011 - 23:49 | QarxYou've obviously never played that game on that emulator. I never deactivated the frame limiter; it runs much faster than the console did, to the point of being unplayable. No amount of browsing the Advanced Options and Help sections allowed me to find out what I could do to fix it.
Also note that I said "most official emulators" the emphasis being on "most". I never said they were ALL perfect.
I have indeed played the VC version of MM, and never had any problems, though I admit I only played the original version once (from start to finish, anyway), so if some colors are different, I wouldn't have noticed. Still, it doesn't sound like it's as game-breaking as, say, lagging for no apparent reason (like Banjo and Kazooie), or suffering from a low framerate (such as Donkey Kong 64 running at 50 FPS instead of 60), or, bringing up B&K again, missing some graphics altogether, like when you enter a stage, the screen is mostly black, and has some numbers instead of what it's supposed to be.
The games I used as examples aren't on VC, but they are on XBLA. I haven't played them, but I would assume those issues would be nonexistent, since they're such obvious flaws >_>. If you know whether or not they're there, then just let me know.
No disrespect was intended, by the way. I was just sharing my experiences with emulators.
EDIT:
I actually said the same sort of thing on another comment (concerning your last paragraph), only I also said Luigi's Mansion should have been included, too XD.
-
01.04.2011 - 12:58 | SlowkingWell if the game runs consistently faster you can just set the frame limiter lower.
Well MM VC has mostly graphical glitches but it also has consideribly more lag in Great Bay temple.
On the other hand there is less lag in other areas than on the N64, so I guess it evens out.
-
01.04.2011 - 17:34 | QarxWell, I thought of that, but couldn't figure out how XP. The only thing I could find was turning it off, and obviously, that just makes it worse >_

01.07.2011 - 00:47 | The Neverending TwilightVirtual Boy was the biggest bomb of a system ever? Uhm... yeah... uh... no... I don't think so. Ever hear of something called, Philip's CD-i? Nintendo would NEVER be as bad as that. And not to mention that's only ONE bomb Nintendo has shit out. No, the Zelda games and Mario game that were on the CD-i DON'T count, because Nintendo gave the rights to 3 Zelda games and a Mario game to be put on the system. Ever wonder why there are no movies or other games by different companies based on their franchises? It's because of the CD-i screwing with their franchises... oh... and yeah... the horrible animated series also had a bit to do with that, as well.

Lol at all the Thumbs Downs I got. I must have offended the morons that will buy absolutely anything regardless of how worthless or how big a rip off it is. But if that's the case, then why are you a fan of Phelous? He does pretty much the same thing with videos like this, doesn't he? He points out in great detail what a big rip off this is, meaning you're an idiot if you buy it.

Remember do not take his words always 100% accurate. This is a review and he makes fun of it. Just like the other reviewers. Just cause we are fans of Phelous does not mean we have to listen to him or take him seriously. I am sure if he was reading this he would want our opinions and he expects us people could like the game too. There are pros and cons. But most of the time your just insulting people non-stop just cause we like a thing or two that you may not. The game was only about 39.99. Seriously. I bought it too and had a discount so I payed only 19.99. That is not a bad price. its not like they made you pay a full 60 buck game right? I mean every new HD Collection game is around 39.99 game now. They don't change much. Heck I heard Splinter Cell HD Collection didn't even make it better quality graphic-wise or sound-quality. Would YOU still buy it? Would YOU still buy the Halo 1 remake? That is something you should think cause you apparently do not think before you speak. Its no wonder people thumb downed you.
-
I see your point. But actually I did not see ODST as really that awful. A side game really and the firefight was fun and had high replay value. It was rather fun. And there really isn't any Zelda clones. They are all uniquely different. All in all sounds to me like your not a gamer at all. Your argument will pretty much smack ever single game existing that had a huge series or sequel. Gears of War series still uses their same exact gameplay. Virtual Boy remember....that was a 1995 product. They just weren't ready. And guess what? They were ready in 2011 with the release of the 3DS and it really does work. i have one. And the latest Sonic Generations was actually a cool game. The best of the modern sonic games. Sometimes those emulators are actually illegal mostly at the Xbox 360s and PS3 and Wii ones. I too was also disappointed in the Super Mario All-Stars 25 Anniversary game. Nothing was changed but idk maybe the fans wanted it original. We may never know their true intent. Remember people wanted originals back. Look at these HD Collections coming out. Silent Hill 2-3 HD Collection, Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, etc. Those are originals too and not much changed at all expect some graphics smoother and higher resolution and clearly quality sound.

No offense but your friend was an idiot. You can DL the soundtrack to almost any game - for nothing at all. I own the OST for All old Mario games, and dozens of other games for that matter. Didn't pay for a disc limited to 1 console to do so. They all run right on my comp as media files. I mean... just look at this website. Can DL entire OSTs for free. Keep in mind that this is just ONE website. There's tons in google search results.

I just find your arguments becoming more and more amusing. look. I bought it too. Whoopie-do. I bought it and kept it. i had another copy and so I decided to keep both books and CDs and sold one copy. Sold it at Gamestop and got 29 bucks back. THAT is something.Sure you can download the soundtracks. I do the same, doesn't mean you can't collect. You should understand people who collect things as a hobby. I collect anime RPG soundtracks. I know you can get them online free. i know you can check out artwork online too. BUT having the fricken thing in your hand and look at with your own hands, is something else.

I agree, Nintendo was VERY lazy with this game, hell just look at the reviews on Metacritic, they're none too good. I understand that the games are great, but there's 4 games, FOUR!!!! They could put in Mario World, MW 2, Mario 64, and whatever else they could find. Guess what else, Phelous? They put in the NES versions of the games! That's REALLY LAZY!!!! GUAHUAHUAJBBVJVJVSKJVSBVI QNGVIAUENIUOSUJCBIWCBOIWQ HBCOIWHBCPIWHBCIOWQBCVIWH BCPEQHCPOIWC!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!! Moral of this rant: Nintendo is lazy

You still say "Marry-O"? Ace and Chet say it that way as a joke.
They actually meant "limited edition" though; even more so than Metroid Prime Trilogy -- it's sold out already. I could still find MPT two months after release if I looked hard enough. Not so with this. Perhaps they spent no effort because they weren't going to make much of them anyway.
Also, it's $30 MSRP, not $50. Still overpriced, but not $50, heck no.

I like to pride myself and call myself a game boy (a person who supports nintendo) but you are right i think that this is BULL PLOP!! sorry for the language, but that is a slap in the face if i do say so myself from nintendo. and this is funny as always Phalous. the only problem i have with this is the choppyness of the video. i dont know its my computer or this video itself. Good job regardless

I'm just as upset as you are, Phelous. I still like Super Mario All-Stars, but considering that this is the 25th anniversary of one of their greatest mascots, this is the best they can do?
Not only could they have included Super Mario World, they could have included Super Mario 64 and the two Super Mario Land games via a Virtual Gameboy feature.
They could have also added videos (like the super play videos they have been releasing), more music onto the disc itself, image archives, behind the scenes info and much more.
The sad is that its likely they didn't add the other games in because they feared they would cut into their sales. That is stupid. I mean both Sega and SNK constantly release games on the Virtual Console and other systems and yet they still release compilation discs like Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection.
Even sadder, Mario is on a much higher position than Sonic, and yet Sega treats Sonic much better when it comes to compilation discs, like the Sonic Collection and the Sonic Gems Collections released back in the GameCube days. Those included very rare Sonic games as well as Game Gear games.
And yet, all what Mario gets for his anniversary is a re-release of a SNES game?
Really?
Also, for a while it was selling for 30 bucks. But how the prices have gone up.
-
The reason they did this limited edition was guess what the casual gamers by large have no frigging clue how to access the virtual console on the wii nor that the wii can go online despite a manual and icons on the main menu.
Nintendo in Japan had to setup a network to help people get their wiis online even though the wii online system is incredibly easy to setup.
-
01.02.2011 - 11:40 | sansai
Your justification is because of lazy users?
Yet that didn't stop Sega from releasing a better tribute.
I am sorry, there is no justification for this on any level. Well no justification for the end user. There is a ton of it for Nintendo, and that is because people are willing to pay top dollar for the same game they played on the SNES.
-
01.02.2011 - 10:41 | Paper_BanjokamiWell you're right in the regard of compilation releases, but what about main, "canon" Mario and Sonic games? Surely you'd agree that Nintendo is muuuuuccccchhhh better in this regard. And perhaps Sega only does compilations better because they're too lazy to make a good new game?
But yes, this is quite ridiculous when you think about it... I wonder what Nintendo will do for the 50th anniversary?
-
01.02.2011 - 02:01 | LOZFI only bought it because I didn't have the original for the SNES...Oh, that and I got it on the cheap. $22 bucks. I love christmas sales.
-
01.02.2011 - 02:07 | RespublicanYou're right about the game being lazy, but fro what i heard the soundtrack and book are also lazy. For the soundtrack half of the tracks are only sound effects and the book they did not include the complete history of Mario as they didn't include spin-off games. A real disappointment for any Mario or Nintendo fans.

01.02.2011 - 02:13 | masterxakdefinitely do more reviews like this i quite enjoyed it.
-
01.02.2011 - 02:14 | RespublicanNow that i think of it they put more effort into Zelda with the Zelda collection that came out for the Gamecube than they did with Mario for the Wii. The Zelda one did not come with a book or soundtrack but it did come with four Zelda games and two of them were from the N64. So if they put effort with Zelda for the Gamecube they could've done a lot better with Mario for the Wii.
-
01.03.2011 - 10:26 | Drake666
If you're talking about the version with the Master Sword edition that was awesome ! I mean, it was just a way for people who had the N64 version to buy it again, but, at least, it was fun and I didn't had the feeling of being screwed... specially because my NES cartridge of Zelda I and II weren't really stable anymore :P (perhaps it's my console... anyway).

They often have tons of bugs, have minor changes in them, often don't work as the originals did. Hence why people who want perfect emulation go for the vc releases of those titles for full price.

Nintendo did do something like this once before though. Back when they sold Nes games for full price for the GBA.

Copypasta'd from my post on RAD's December 15th review. http:// www.blisteredthumbs.net/ 2010/12/rad-ep142super- mario-all-stars-limited- edition/
For someone who doesn’t already have these games, this is a pretty good deal. For someone who does already own them, particularly the exact same Super Mario All-Stars cart for the SNES, it’s quite underwhelming. First disappointment right off the bat is that they didn’t use the + World version. The booklet with the history of Mario isn’t anything you couldn’t find on the internet. The audio CD again isn’t anything you couldn’t find on the internet.
Personally, I think this is rather lazy for the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. This is Mario! He made you what you are, Nintendo! And all you had the desire to do was repackage a game we already got 15-ish years ago? I would have liked to see a whole new updated version utilizing the Wii’s capabilities instead, just for something a little different. It wouldn’t be any different than taking the old NES games and updating them for the SNES. They could have at least included more games such as the Gameboy series.
I don’t think I’ll be spending my money on this. There’s much more pressing things coming in the near future, such as the 3DS, that I need to save for. In the meantime, I think I’ll dust off my SNES and break out the original All-Stars cart. :3

30 bucks, actually.... well, for u.s currency.
a soundtrack and an artbook to go with, I'd say would be worth around 25 bucks (hey, 25 bucks for 25 years!), but since these copies are LIMITED, I can see why it would be worth 30.
I'd rather pay 30 for the soundtrack and art book, than what it will be worth once it's out of print, it is limited after all.....
Will agree with you on the effort to the gaming side of this. I heard Japan copies have a special "25th" anniversary logo replacing the question marks in the boxes on the first super mario bros. game.... if they would of done that for releases elsewhere, paying for the games, over the nic nacs, would be just as worth it.
Even better, maybe if you complete all 3 games, without using any warpzones or flutes, maybe they could of added 25 minutes of Princess Peach's REAL reward to Mario. Animated in her current form, although an 8-bit Peach is tempting.....
or, 25 minutes of Bowser's Karaoke party! Giving a hint that, to celebrate 25th anniversary, Bowser set aside his differences, and threw Mario the best karaoke party imaginable, and we the lucky viewers could get 25 minutes of footage that Luigi filmed at the party!
I could just imagine the confusion any gamer would have after beating all 3 games to be awarded with Bowser singing Journey's "Don't Stop Believing"
-
Its only 30 bucks, but still, a rip off.
I forgot about the Advance versions, they have ported these games twice already, 3 times now.
I also heard, that they actually removed stuff from the Wii version, like they took out some levels or something.
The worst part is, the original All-Stars was already a port, so this is a port, of a port.
But you know what the fucking absolute worst part was, aside from all the other bullshit?
Every single copy was reserved the second the stores started advertising it. The fucking games never made it to the shelves! It was sold out before I even knew you could pre-order.
I was like "Do you guys have any copies?"
"Nope, sold out day 1."
So, I will probably have to go to e-Bay if I really want this.
Looking on Amazon, great 70 bucks.
Limited Edition indeed, if you have a copy fucking hold on to it.
There is so many versions of Marios original games now lol.
They should have taken the All-Stars/World version and updated them with all the cool shit from Mario Bros Wii. Updating all the graphics, maybe adding some type of Mario Galaxy easter egg, just incorporate Marios rich history into these games. Update them with all kinds of shit from all over the Mario universe! That would have been worth 50 bucks.
Keep on making videos Phelous, your one of my favorite guys on this site.
Take care.

Is it really 50$ in America? I got it for 20$ in Europe! That's what the charge for the soundtrack alone!
Doesn't anybody know how "compilation-phobic" Nintendo is? The only systems we've got compilations from them is the GAME & WATCH! It was a bloody miracle we got Mario All Stars and I can guarantee this WILL be limited edition, Nintendo doesn't lie about this.... We also got that Zelda collection for the Gamecube which WAS very limited...
I don't know if Nintendo is too greedy or too stupid, but they clearly don't know how compilations should work...
