Hey Phel, that was a nice "sleeping" tune you used. I know I heard it before but I can't recall the game its from(I know it's from a game LordKaT did, Little Nemo is my guess?) I would have went with this though:
http://tinyurl.com/ 2cm8weh
It isn't used for "sleeping" or "dreaming" when it is used in its game(Super Mario RPG), but it sure fits with its sound, doesn't it? :)
Of course, you could always try the Inn theme from FF7, track 25, titled "Ahead on our way":
http://tinyurl.com/ 26fj7qx
It's ironic, and tranquil too. Anyone that's played the game would remember that tune, hehe.
And if you're ever GOING to sleep in a video and really want to be creative, track 26 of the same game is "Good Night Until Tomorrow":
http://tinyurl.com/ 2fdbgqo
I'm Drain, the fanatic of the game tunes. Thought I would offer some suggestions. :)
By the way Phel, I can see you like zombies. I too have quite a few movies about them.(Few dozen, most of which are year 2000+). I went out of my way to find the WORST one I could, and I mean WORST. The movies you've reviewed are fucking gold compared to some I found, like "Gangs of the Dead". But I finally found what, in my opinion, is the WORST zombie movie I've ever seen, and I'm going to suggest it to you(Just because I know you'll watch it and torment yourself). Try to find "Zombies Gone Wild(2007)". It's so bad I promise you you'll fall asleep an hour in just PRAYING for a fucking zombie to finally show up and bite someone. Every fucking scene in the movie has a mountain of things wrong about it or messed up. Good luck if you decide to ever check it out. Reaching the end of that piece of shit sure wasn't easy for me. :)
Regarding Taufiq: I thought I would add that Kristen Stewart is a great actor, and she did a lot of respectable roles with decent performances before she turned to the dark side and whored herself out to Twilight. The movie is written badly(Even saying that is generous), it isn't her fault. I used to like her as one of my favorites before she appeared in fucking Twilight. You should see her in stuff she did before that retarded series came along. Twilight and Harry Potter are the series' that corrupt a lot of "once respectable actors" by drowning them in easy cash. Can you blame em? I'd star in one of the movies MYSELF if offered.

Damn, I checked in my collection(Bros 2 is one of the hundred or so games I got soundtracks for), and you're right. 1988, Bros 2(Called Mario USA in Japan), Track 15 of 16, "End of Dream - Cast". Apparently someone is an even bigger nerd on tunes than me to have known that. I'm ashamed however, to have not known a tune on my collection. :( I was wrong, not from a LordKaT game.
But now that I think about it, he should have went with a Silent Hill tune. Perhaps he will next time. Would be very ironic. :)
Regarding mont: I don't know if you meant me or Phel, but either way, you'd be right.

Dude, you don't have to be a tune nerd to figure that out. The end of the review is basically a parody of the end of SMB2. That's why he used that tune. It's a fairly famous scene in video game history. Hell, I would have thought that anyone who beat that game would be able to figure that out, as well as a fair number of people who haven't beat it and only know it by reputation. I think you just overthought the whole thing.

One thing that confused the hell out of me was:
Why are they wearing US Army Generals outfits?
Seriously, are they supposed to be the US Military & NATO? I thought the Italian military had really different outfits for its generals.
So why are they dressed like US Generals? And props to mumbls below me for that mention of the Umbrella Corp logo on one of the general's shoulder.
And Here's a fun fact about this movie:
The company that did the dubbing of this film also did the dubbing of that MST3K movie, Devil Fish.
And the director of this film was a best friend of Troll 2 director Claudio Fragasso and was a protege of Joe D'Amato. Now that is a triload of fail right there.
And this was the funniest Phelous review since Humains. Seriously, no other review by Phelous was as funny as this, with the exception of Mac & Me.
And speaking of this film, wasn't there an anime with almost the exact same plot?

I bet this is all a bad dream. I'm going to wake up from this at any moment, back to a world where this movie doesn't exist. That's right, I'm waking up... any minute... any time... seriously...
(Gulp!)
Thoughts:
- Nuclear radiation, which creates semi-intelligent homicidal cannibal-vampire zombies, which then can be spread like a virus...
It's official. We've found a more idiotic cause for a zombie holocaust than the scorpions from Dead and Deader.
- My suggested subtitle for this movie: Plan H from Italy. This movie really should be knocking Ed Wood off his bad-directing pedestal.
- Our hero, dreaming of killer zombies and extended televised workout sessions. There's clearly a problem with his super-ego.
Great review. But, really, when are you going to review a movie about bees? They really do make the best bad B-movies around (yeah, I hate myself already for that one, too).

Except "crazed ghoul" isn't contagious in Fallout 3. Now, if you sat around a bunch of radioactive waste for a long time, I can see you becoming one. But even Fallout 3, with all its radioactive goodness, didn't fall to the bad-writing level of "radiation can do anything your plot requires" (well, mostly didn't fall to it). I mean, I've seen zombie children with scorching hands, C.H.U.D.s, and resurrected aliens spring about all due to radiation. IT DON'T WORK DAT WAY!

What the...? If the guy's day is going to turn out exactly like the dream, why not just show us the day instead, so it doesn't end with some random idiot waking up in the middle of the action? And if the whole dream was about how that random idiot dropped his wife, then why did it go off on tangents about zombie attacks and B plots? And if it's going to go off on these tangents anyway, why not ones with some kind of bearing on how and why this is all happening?
Also, I find it funny that a zombie-pocalypse happens and the first thing the general needs to explain to his men is "by the way, don't worry, I checked them out and they aren't aliens." It seems like they were already dealing with some serious shit long before this whole thing even happened.

Normally I agree with movies you choose to trash, But Nightmare City is somewhat of a classic in the Italian horror genre. Is it great ? no....But it is an entertaining take on the zombie genre and as far as Italian exploitation cinema goes this one is not all that awful compared to some others of the genre. I still love it because it is bad and that makes it endearing in my eyes.

I own Nightmare City on DVD and it awesome movie that truely is considered a classic film. Here are some things I'd like to point out:
1: To me this movies sticks out like a sore thumb. I enjoy Phelous reviews quite much, but they are usually all quite recent films all from USA. I don't like it when you review an Italian horror classic more than 30 years old. It is not what I expect from the show.
(It is something that Cinema Snob might do though.)
2: The translation seems to be horrible. No surprise there. So perhaps you should have watched the Italian version (you find that on DVD).
3: The whole point of the movie is that the zombies are not dumb. It doesn't make them super smart though. One can only be as smart as he was alive. That is why usually the zombies are dumb as fuck, but sometimes so smart. Individual zombies act differently to each other.
4: When they find the pilots killed there are two things to think.
1) The pilots were killed after they landed the plain.
2) The zombies flew the plane themselves. These zombies are smart and capable of operating machines (even planes) so why not. Being a zombies doesn't give you flying lesson, but if one possess the skill already then one can pilot the plane.
5: You can dream about characters that other than you. It is very common. So it is not at all impossible to dream about people that you haven't met and what happens to them. It is very well documented that people dream all sort of stuff.
6: Having it all a dream is really cheesy plot, but in 1980 it wasn't used in movies that much compared to 30 years later.
7: And finally..
Nightmare City (actually called Incubo sulla città contaminata) is an Italian movie made by Italian people to Italian audience in 1980! If you pick it up as an English dubbed version and review it as an American in year 2010 then of course it will look stupid.
-
Also something I didn't like..
You used Ghostbusters music in the scene where they were driving an ambulance. Since Ghostbusters was made after this film it really doesn't have any point being there.
(Or at least I didn't get one.)
If the movie would've been made after Ghostbusters it is whole another thing. It doesn't really work when you edit in references that the movie makers couldn't have known.
(This is also one example why you probably shouldn't make reviews to 30 years old films.)

Well, I'm feeling especially evil today, so I'll give this a go.
Responses to:
1) To my knowledge, Phelous doesn't have a timeframe limit to the movies he reviews.
2) Is the Italian version the same version but with subtitles? The dialogue might be better, but that's just a small sample of this movie's problems.
3) What?
4) They left the pilots' bodies in the seats. What, the "smart" zombies leaned over them the entire time while flying the plane?
5) This was not conveyed like a dream. This was conveyed as a bunch of useless sideplots that went nowhere other than killing more people we don't care about. Then it has the audacity to go for a twist ending by calling it a dream. No... just no.
6) And we should give the movie a pass for this reason? Also, try Invaders from Mars (from 1953!) sometime and see how "original" the idea was.
7) There are American movies made by Amercian people to American audiences in 1980 that were also complete crap. Nationality has nothing to do with it.
If you like this movie, more power to you. I have a bunch of guilty pleasures as well in my video collection. But I don't defend them as "good." Nightmare City is the consummate model of bad cinema, and none of your arguments prove otherwise.
-
I'll answer only to the points that actually need some clarification. Your points are very valid and it would be stupid to argue over opinions..
1) As far as I know there is also none, but my opinion stays. This movie seems very different from the other movies Phelous has reviewed. I cannot (and I don't want to) say what Phelous can and cannot review, but I wanted to point my opinion out in a comment. I have usually liked every other video that Phelous has produced. It is not because I liked this film. I've liked some others too (eg. Anaconda). It is because this is an old movie classic, which seems to fit poorly inside Phelous's show. That is only my opinion and I don't consider it has any effect on the show.
2) I don't speak Italian so I cannot say much about the translations, but with subtitles the movie didn't have those clearly awfully translated scenes that Phelous made comments about. If you watch any movie with poor voice acting it makes a huge difference. You can see it, if you watch any re-edit of Romero's The Night of the Living Dead. They don't have any feeling of the original film - solely because the voice acting has been done differently.
4) I'll say that those pilots probably flew the plane and were killed after the plane was on ground. Also you can think that the zombies flew the plane and after they did it they threw the killed pilots to the cockpit. It seems they were so randomly positioned there anyway, so it makes sense.
Since it is not shown on film anyone can has their own opinion.
7) Nationality has everything to do with. If you watch any Japanese movie, you are really missing the point without any knowledge on Japanese culture. Without understanding of Italian cinema, this movie will look really awful and weird (no question about it). Since it was never meant to be released in the USA, but now it has. The audience shouldn't see it compared to a whole different culture of movies. It doesn't make any sense that way and (at least to me) it is not what watching movies is about.
(It is a whole another story with a movie that is done abroad, but is targeted to American audience eg. Dragon Wars.)
PS. Sorry about the language. English is not my native language so that is the reason my writing seems a little bulky.
(And I haven't seen Invaders from Mars so no comment about that.)
EDIT: To reming myself I watched some scenes from the movie (including the military base scene where they make plans on what to do about the zombies). I found the sound acting actually being very well made. It didn't resemble anything to the motionless speach that I saw in the scenes in Phelous's video.
Also something Phelous probably should knows is that in a military the plans are not titled with letters indicating the primary of that plan. Plans H and B are just two plans (in a series of atleast 8 plans) that they can use. It doesn't indicate that P...

Goody, Round 2:
1) No much point arguing here. I say what I usually say in this types of arguments: Phelous does what he will, and you can watch or not watch.
2) Bad dubbing is rather evil. I'll agree there. But this film's problems extend far beyond the voice acting. Based on what was seen in the review, the only reason I'd rewatch Nightmare City again is if there was a Riff Trax for it.
4) Now this argument is just ridiculous. Either it's:
- A) the murderous zombies, who have been shown to murder everyone they see EVERY SINGLE TIME THEY SHOW UP somehow restrain themselves on an airplane (you know, while they're sporting massive burns and weapons and crazy eyes that somehow go unnoticed by the pilots and any other crew member so that they don't/can't radio ahead to warn the ground crew). Or it's
- B) they flew the plane down, either piloting it over the bodies of the pilots (dumb) or they're particularly tidy murderous zombies that decided to plop the bodies back in the seats when they were through (also dumb).
THIS IS A PLOT HOLE. Deal with it.
7) Again, no. I've seen a lot of foreign films and you know what? I do understand different cultures and mores. The culture has nothing to do with the problems in this film. Good filmmaking is a universal skill, not something that depends on a country's culture.
Now, if Nightmare City was actually a cut-and-pasted edition of some other Italian film that some American company got a hold of and edited into ribbons, you might have a point. But you've already admitted that it isn't, that only the dubbing was added.
Again, the issue here isn't that you shouldn't enjoy the movie. But this is the kind of movie you sit at home with a beer or ten and laugh your buttocks off at, because it's not scary, it's not logical, and it's not worth ten bucks a ticket in a movie theater. This is the kind of movie Phelous was destined to rip apart. It's almost So Bad It's Good, but I'm not sure it quite reaches that lofty position in B-movie schlock.
Final note: The first plan you use is always called PLAN A. Then you go to PLAN B and so on. The only time you deviate from this is if you're trying to be funny.
-
Based on what I see in this review Nightmare City is an awful movie..
But it is actually not that awful at all. With the dubbing - though.. It just might be (I couldn't tell as I never watch my movies dubbed)..
The zombies are not murderious all the time. For instant that zombie by the pool didn't go to murder, but chose to instead to hide and look. There was also the zombie who stabbed the clay head and then went to hide. And those are not the only times this happens..
In the movie it is stated that the radiation makes these people's blood cells die unless they can get more blood (drinking blood is of course the silliest way to get more blood, but I'll let it past). So that is the reason for the killing.
Also there is the thing which Phelous said to be a paradox.
I do think it's quite funny, but what the doctor says is still quite clear. The acts of these persons are such in nature that they could be considered inhumane. So it is a paradox that they are not infected by anything, but are 100% humans. It is a play on words..
(And I am not sure, but I might believe that in Italian this line would work even better.)
About the culture..
If you look any Italian zombie movie from that era they'll definitely look like scum. But if you understand the culture that is behind them, you can enjoy them in a whole different level..
As for a movie that I'd watch with drinking and having fun. I think Commando is one of those movies, but I wouldn't consider Nightmare City to be one.
I agree though with the film making part. Good film making is an international skill. I just disagree on the opinion that Nightmare City would be any example of a bad film making.

Again, feel free to enjoy this movie. I'm afraid, though, that you're in the minority of people who think it's better than people give it credit for. And your arguments didn't help your case because you're trying to justify the blatant and frequent plot holes of this movie. In fact, your arguments only helped point out these holes all the more.
It's been evil.
-
I am not defending this as a perfect film (so of course my arguments show some plot holes), but here is my problem..
Normally I've enjoyed Phelous's videos which are about bad movies where he shows the things that are done badly and you can laugh about them (with Phelous). This is not official show desciption of Phelous's show. It's idea of it.
But on this review I think Phelous chose a good movie and edited it in a way, it looks really bad and then laughs about it. This is the reason I didn't enjoy the review..

Well, that was a horrible piece of shit - the movie not the review.
That wasn't just a slap to snap someone out of a hysterical fit, he almost took the poor woman's head off he swung so hard. She should have punted him in the plums rather than suck his face off.
And when the useless elevator people emptied out, one of the zombies went straight in and copped a feel of the lady he was stabbing...who knew radiation made you horny as well as blood-thirsty?

Great review. Didn't think I'd ever see an Umberto Lenzi film on this show though, I rarely see people rip into him mostly because "Cannibal Ferox" seems to be a touchy subject even 20-someodd years later >_>
I do have to ask though, what the FUCK is with Lenzi and ripping off breasts? I've seen at least 3 of his films that have a scene like that, and obviously this one has it... Not sure I want to be in Lenzi's head.

*lol* Nice, that we are now getting to the classic bad movie stuff instead of recent movies. I hope there is a "Zombie 4 - After Death" review to come, because if you thought "Nightmare City" stretched the "The Characters only see it if the camera sees it"-thing, I just can tell you: You haven't seen nothing yet! :D
"After Death" also has very polite zombies who instead of besieging a house, just wait in front of it. And many more stupid things to make fun of! ;)
