Great video, Phelous. It was interesting to see what both you and AngryJoe, whose review I watched earlier today, thought of this movie. I thoroughly expected it to be shit (as did everyone else, I think). I really wish Alice was never created. Seriously, she's a huge freakin' Mary-Sue. And yet, some of the people I've talked to LIKE this series. Why?! What is there to like about these movies?!
• BIRA
Thanks God there is Phelous, because with Brad, Joe and Spoony liking shit movies, we need somone with some reason!

Resident Evil = Paul Anderson's love letter to his wife.
• Qarx
I've actually seen an ad for this movie on Facebook telling me that loads of people liked this movie. It's funny, since the ad actually had a quote that should make you facepalm. Here it is.

Eh, I saw it I enjoyed it. I took it for what it was because after RE Extinction I stopped complaining about how its not like the game and started taking it for face value. Its a cheesy B-Movie written by a guy who has never had an original idea in his life.

BTW did any body notice that Paul Anderson's name was the biggest and most apparent in the entire opening credits. Its like he's saying "Yup, I made this and there ain't shit you can do about it."
• Taufiq91  - I like this quote from a RE:Afterlife review:
avatar
avatar

"the typical thing to say would be that it's like watching someone playing a videogame. This, however, would be unfair, as there are some games that are actually quite entertaining to watch"

Which is kinda true.

You know what i'd like to see? If PWSA did RE3 just like the RE2 game with Claire and Leon as main characters and RE4 just like the RE4 game with Leon as a main character while have set in i don't know...Spain instead of a post-apocalyptic setting? meh, i think it'd never happen.

That quote is really great Taufiq91 and you're right. It does pretty much perfectly describe the movie and I'm one of those who really likes Let's Plays, so that quote really seems like something I'd say. =)

I always like hearing your opinion on Resident Evil and Silent Hill related things due to your obvious love of the series. It really shows through when you talk about it. I hope that you will eventually do a true review of this movie. I know I'd enjoy that. =D

Sadly I have never played a Resident Evil game. I know this is just a rant, but could someone give me a good Resident Evil game to play?

I own a ps2 and a 360

Also o Hai Phelous.

Resident Evil 1, Resident Evil 0, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4.

Resident Evil 1,2 and 3 are available on the Playstation network.
• Redrally
If you have a PS2 you should try to track down Resident Evil: Code Veronica X. It's arguably the best but you'd better play Resident Evil 1 and 2 before doing so to make sure you know who the characters are.

Alternatively, you could just watch Necroscope86's Let's Plays of the first 4 Resident Evil games on Youtube, although his version of Resident Evil 1 is the PC Director's Cut, which is kind of pants.
• couchpotatodx

I just started Resident Evil 4. I haven't played any of the other games yet so I don't get some of the references, but its pretty good.
• Phelous
avatar
Yeah you can play all the originals for PSX on a PS2.
• Radelta
Resident evil 2 would be my suggestion, it recaps you on the first game at the beginning if you havent played it and it kicks ass.

You can play it on your ps2 its psx game.
• Chase357

For the PS2: Resident Evil: Code Veronica X or Resident Evil 4.
For the 360: Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition.

Not critizing you just telling you
There is a split dog in resident evil 5 so basically yea he took from there...if resident evil got it from silent hill....i don't know

Just pathetic how these movies turned out there was no need for all this bullshit i blame love love i tell you!!!

Stupid directors and having wives star in there movies....

Hopefully they don't add sheva or leon ...those two are my favs in the the resident evil world...and claire....but she was raped in these movies.

oh wait what happened to K-mart? .....hahaha that name....oh was the actor guy supposed to be josh?
• Phelous

Yeah I had that mentioned to me afterwards. I forgot about the plaga dogs in RE5. Man they made me think those SH3 dogs though.
Actor/Athlete guy was called Luther.

The way my mind works, I HAVE to watch every shitty movie I can. So this movie is now on my "Buy DVD ASAP" list. I don't know why I watch shitty movies, I stutter too much to review them....
• Valzahd
avatar
So they're rebooting the series with the exact same plot as the first movie...

Yea, that's total and complete crap.

What's also crap is I saw Afterlife in 3D and it just confirmed to me how much of a gimmick it is. Afterlife uses the same 3D tech developed for Avatar, which means this is the best 3D is going to get, the industry has hit the wall, and I was not wowed by the 3D in Afterlife.

Much like AngryJoe, this will most likely be the last 3D movie I see. It won't get any better and I'm not spending more money for it.
• Bushido_von
avatar
hey Phelous those dogs were on re5 on the ship deck but really who cares lol
• Phelous
avatar
Heh yeah forgot. Still not like plaga dogs made sense to be in the movie either.
• JackIronheart
the only good part of this movie is where Chris and Clair comes in to stop wisker and it completely copy the sence from RE5.

I wish they could just do the movies like they did Degeneration, something that is actually LIKE RESIDENT MOTHERFUCKING EVIL!!! :psychotic:

Sure, the games do a reboot after the lackluster and not very scary 5th game. But the movies could do without fucking anderson. He did an "OK" (note the quotations) job with the first Mortal Kombat, and sure, his filming isn't nearly as aweful as Uwe Boll, but he really doesn't even seem to fucking know what he's doing half the time.

None of the characters have a point except to be "shout outs" and the monsters are the same. Oh look, an Executioner! A Licker! Nemesis!

Come on, the movies could have put a more interesting spin on the virus, make it somethign really scary. Instead it just borrows the namesake and nothing else. And the games seemed to follow suit with 4 and 5. Sure, 4 had some scary bits, but wasn't nearly as chilling as the first three. And 5 maybe had one or two freaky bits, and it was usually more of the scary frustrating where you're hoping you won't die for the umpteenth time.

It all needs a Reboot, the games, the movies, let the old stuff die with whatever particle of dignity it may have left.
• Phelous
avatar
Yeah I'm not at all interested in the game reboot either. A universe without a Jill Sandwich can go to hell.
• DorknessFalls

Video games do not make for good movies. Why does nobody understand this? Silent Hill was probably the closest I've ever seen to a movie capturing the video game's feel and even that fell flat in terms of actually causing any real tension for me. Since you aren't controlling the characters you have far less of a vested interest in their fate, only compounded by the fact that you've likely gotten out of the same scenario in the game.

But I look forward to your final review of this movie when it comes out on DVD.
• Asuka Soryu
avatar
Can we really say that? Is their evidence? I mean every movie about a video game tends to not follow the plot of the game, or change it enough to screw the fans.

Mortal Kombat tryed to make a movie without gore, from a game that sold because of gore.

Double Dragon's had barely anything to do with the game.

Same with Mario
Alone in the Dark
and every other game movie Uwe Boel did.

Final Fantasy the Spirit's within had NOTHING to do with Final Fantasy.

Resident Evil had the same flaw as Double Dragon and Mario.

Final Fantasy Advent Children's plot wasn't to good, but I enjoyed it.

Resident Evil Degeneration fits with RE and I loved that movie.

I would rater say: americans can't make video game movies, oh americans and uwe boll.

The logic in this movie fails to make any lick of sense... So I try not to justify it what so ever. -_-

I laughed so hard during the Executioner fight sequence. I just made a bunch of Scott Pilgrim jokes. Too easy XD
• Roler42
avatar
this reminded me of a friend who loves the resident evil movies

we were discussing them not being close to the games, when all of a sudden he pulled an uwe boll...

"if they made the movies like the games then it would be pointless, they have to create something new out of it"

unlike boll... anderson is doing something worse...

"hey its resident evil!! and it has my wife! look at her, she's god, she has clones, she has super powers, she destroys the baddies and she kicks ass, my wife is the best! oh yeah and some characters from the games are there..."
• VillainIsLemony
avatar
You gotta admit though, Wesker kicking the ever loving SHIT out of de-powered Alice at the beginning of the film was amazing. =D
• DMaster
Awesome dude. I wanted to hear you bash this one for SO. LONG. after seeing you review the other films. How on Terra a guy like Anderson keeps getting work...I will NEVER know.

Interesting tidbit: according to Box Office Mojo, these movies only barely broke even over here...but made over 100M each when foreign profits are considered. Curious, no?
• Insigzilla  - Why the RE Movies Fail
You know what would be awesome? If someone were to make a movie based on the Resident Evil games!! I'm still waiting...

You can't call these movies based on the games if they create their own main character and make her more powerful than anything in the resident evil universe while just throwing in names from the games at random. I mean, I understand it's hard to make a perfect adaptation or even to make an adaptation relatively like the games, but these people didn't even try!! There's a difference between getting some of the mythos wrong and shortening things, and simply throwing the mythos out the window and creating your own character that proves all other good guys superfluous.

How would you feel if someone made a Batman movie but thought the Batman character himself was boring, made up their own superhero, and showed categorically how Batman was worthless compared to this new character. Not only that, but Batman must rely on this new superhero for everything and thinks this new superhero is the best blessing ever!! It would be a slap in the face for anyone who loves the Batman mythos, but almost assuredly someone would say "But the movie IS based on the Batman comics! You can't expect them to get everything right!" There's getting stuff wrong, and there's ignoring the mythos completely.

I love the games, I love the story in them, and what these movies have done to the games is just horrid. I no longer support them and refuse to watch them in any way, shape, and form. Now, that's just my personal opinion, and if you like the movies, go watch them. I am just tired of hearing that the movies ARE based on the games and I'm simply a ranting purist. These movies are a complete failure when compared to the games they are based on.

Oh, by the way, if George Romero writes you a zombie script that is an awesome adaptation of the first Resident Evil game and you FIRE HIM because it's BORING only to hire a young director to write you a spiffed up version that's specifically NOT based on the games... There's just EVERYTHING wrong with that!
• DarkMessiah
avatar
Uhh.. Because Batman is Batman. Resident Evil 1-5 isn't called Claire/Jill/Chris/Leon, so of course that analogy you used is moot.
• DarkMessiah
avatar
Wow, am I the only one that actually enjoyed this movie? Or is it because I'm a non-conformist? Who knows..

In any case, I liked it cuz of its RE5 similarities, plus Claire Redfield was actually Claire Redfield this time around. She looked and acted the part. Oh, and the tentacle-zombie creatures were cool, and Neo Wesker was bad-ass. Of all the Resident Evil movies, this one was the only good one.

First off, Alice loses her powers (spoiler, oh well) so she's human again. And secondly, to whoever said that Silent Hill was the only game-based movie that was closest to its inspiration, that's not necessarily true. Tekken did this very well, with RE: Degeneration in second, Advent Children in 3rd, and Doom (the FPS scene, mostly) in 4th.
• Asuka Soryu
avatar
Would I be a non-conformist if I lit myself ablaze? You see, people not liking something stupid in unanimous, isn't conformity.

Just like it's not conformist to think running at full speed into a brick wall, isn't a smart idea.

Or how not liking 4Kids dubs, isn't conformity... but the abillity to see how they've F!ed things up. I'm looking at you, 4Kids dub of One Piece.
• Roler42
avatar
that's because degeneration was made by the same people who brought us some of the games, AND it wasnt "close to the games" it was a story that was IN the continuity of the games (between re4 and re5)

and like i said in a comment above, having the same cutscenes from the game inserted from the movie doesnt make the movie better, it makes it feel cheap as if the director didnt even bother to make something better

i laughed at the excecutioner scene, i mean come on! the excecutioner from the movie can move faster than that! and swing the axe even in a more badass way!

and you got it wrong pal, "non-comformist" that's all of us, we want a GOOD resident evil movie with at least some sense with the games, not a resident evil movie with the cutscenes and names from the game insterted in them
• Phelous
avatar
Alice "loses" her powers. But immediately after survives a helicopter explosion and is still jump kicking things in the head like the Executioner.
• Genjibunbun
You non-conformists are all alike!
• Tanabata07
Hmm, wait a second...if you actually look at this series as a parody of Resident Evil, rather than something that takes itself seriously like, I don't know, Epic Movie?, this actually makes a lot of sense. That, or it's a bad fanfiction come to life. Either way...
• Phelous
avatar
No, unlike Epic Movie, this made me laugh, which is because it wasn't trying to.
• Richard Wesker
Haha, good ol' Paul W.S. Anderson, taking another step toward Uwe Boll-dom with each new film he makes. XD

• KMMouse

What really annoyed me was that Capcom tried to link the movie and game universes! Screw the Red Queen from Umbrella Chronicles in its CPU, and hard.

That goes twice for Anderson. I like that he tries, I really do, but he never explains the leaps in logic that introduces the elements of the games and that NEVER WORKS.

All he needed for the sequel that will never be was Leon and Sheva and we'd have had a full house of fuck. Well, maybe Ada too. Nobody cared about Billy and Rebecca from 0.
• Roler42
avatar
thank goodness the red queen only lasted while UC did =D
• surasshu
Haha, this was great! You should do more unscripted ranting. Really funny stuff.
• Asuka Soryu

How ironicaly hillarious. A series of films that has barely anything to do with the game it's based off, is ripping off Resident Evil 5.

yeah we did see Milias nipples at one scene as I can recall.

Also the movie seemed to heavily rip off the Matrix and Dawn of the Dead... did anyone else realize this? I mean the survivors on the rooftop of a building, the armored vehicle for escape, the fucking MATRIX battles.............
