This particular "Pulse" is also called "Octane"; another title that poorly represents this moive.
Dammit, now I'm going to have "Hide & Seek" stuck in my head all night....
Why yes, everyone know's you're supposed to take sleeping pills with coffee.
If your voice sounds like a side effect of helium intake, an acting profession is not something you should be looking into.
Haha, nice use of Ace of Base there. B)
Jesus this movie has a lot of padding. So much that you could stuff it into a matress & sleep on it.
Wait, are they supposed to be mother & daughter? Because they look no more than 5 years apart in age. :0
The plot is so pointless that it's anemic.
Watch out! Tongue-Boy is gonna SPARKLE! :S

If you enjoy movies about driving in the night, how about Dead End for an upcoming review. For me it has least sense than this second pulse and kind of plays the same cards of dream and reality... but also tries REALLY hard to be both a comedy and a creepy film which is like trying to mix water with oil really.
But talking about THIS film, I think I have never being so in agreement with you about a film. Bothering mother and daughter makes no one give a damn about their outcome. Long padding of nothingness and long sequences of driving around. Unexplained teleportation and really out of place flashy videoclip sequences....
Very good review really.

07.22.2010 - 16:02 | RuinerXXSinCityActually humor, and horror go hand in hand with an intelligent writer/director. It's not you even need to search obscure films for great examples of this. Evil Dead 2, and Army of Darkness are extremely well known, and are great examples. Peter Jackson's earlier work shows it as well. Dead Alive/Braindead, and The Frighteners(which is criminally underrated)managed to balance high levels of camp(I KICK ASS FOR THE LORD!)with creepy unsettling imagery.
Those are just some of the better known examples, and there are shit loads of other films that show that humor in horror(or vice versa) fits like a glove. Balancing the two is where it becomes difficult, and when you comes across a lesser known/ brand new director who manged to accomplish the feat keep an eye on them. It is more often then not the sign of a wealth of potential.
As for this film, I can't believe how terrible they made Madeline Stowe look in this film.I had the hugest crush on her as a kid in the mid 90s. She had/has this incredible natural beauty in almost all her films, but here it looks like she lost a fight with a back alley plastic surgeon.

I didnt say Horror and comedy cant go by hand by hand. I say that mixing comedy with creepy elements is like mixing oil and water. And while Evil Dead 2 can be seen as "creepy" to some extend, is really the over the top aspect of the horror which blends that well with the comedy aspects of it. In the movie I talk about "Dead end" there is not that over the top element on the horror elements of the story so all the over the top comedy really crashes against the attempts of doing dark creepy scenes.
The Frighteners on the other hand is the opposite to the Evil Dead 2 example. Here is the comedy which is tamed down making it blend much more appropiatedly (Im not english so I hope that is a real word) with the horror aspects that, like you said, are much more serious that in previous horror/comedy films by Jackson.

There is yet another Pulse?! Geez, how many movies have that title?
This Pulse seemed worse than the last, because at least the last one was consistent in being stupid. This one was all over the place and really annoying, in both characters and story, if you can call that mishmash a plot.
Nice review Phelous. I always love references to Resident Evil and your repeated usage of that "ba-dum-dum-dum dum-dum-da-dum" music was nicely placed. By the way, I feel kind of silly for asking, but what is the title of that song? I've heard it all over the place, but never found out what it was or where it's from.
Here's hoping the next Pulse isn't even worse than this one. :)

07.22.2010 - 00:00 | SeibzehnA never think that the premise of a movie of driving in the night could be even more boring in the development, the movie just lack of party cop in the second half xD.
Awesome review Phelous!

07.22.2010 - 00:37 | DreamingWingsLets see. We have a weird, nonsensical looping plot combined with an equally nonsensical anti-abortion message.
So the director is a militant fundamentalist Christian who thinks he's David Lynch? Dear God, the possibility of such a being existing manages to be the one truly disturbing part of this movie.

07.22.2010 - 22:40 | DreamingWingsMost likely highly stretchy; as my reply was largely intended for sarcasm value. Though I still get horrific mental images of Jack Chick and company sitting at a meeting brainstorming ways to come up with a "Christian" Blue Velvet or Mulholland Drive.

07.22.2010 - 01:47 | SanFran51I hope you follow up the review with the 2006 "Pulse" which is a real remake of the 1988's "Pulse" and apparently Wes Craven was one of the writers of the remake and it has a 11% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
lol
