I liked it. But did you have to use your scoring system in "Paws". I cringed, but I probably don't have a good appreciation for the art of the pun.

Paw, you really need to check out The Protomen especially their second album called Act II: The Father of Dead. You will not be disappointed!

Now THIS is what I've been expecting since the inception of the site's music buff. A long wait, but well worth the payoff.
Seeing movies, TV shows, comics, and way too many video games being reviewed, there's seemed to be a lack of love for music over the months. No true dedication to the recent releases of the ever shifting realms of songs and albums. To see a show finally designed for such a purpose really makes the site feel more complete. Well done Paw.
To comment on the reviewing style, I think you did a really great job. Background was obviously nessecary, your professional review and score was well executed (the PAWS were a nice touch), and the treat of hearing "Medicane Man" ended off the video quite well.
I personally think playing the WHOLE song dragged the ending too long though, and would advise shortening sample songs down to 1/2 - 1 minute in future reviews. Besides that though, I'm pretty satisfied overall, especially considering that this is the first episode.
Not only was this entertaining to watch and listen, but it was super informative to one unfamiliar with Zero 7's existence. Critical as I may be to, well everything, I tip my hat to the excellent job done here Paw.
By all means, tweak around with this format, and continue the eclectic reviews through music's many different phases. Bravo!

You should do a review of a Streetlight Manifesto CD when they release a new one.
• tiggerpete
I love Streetlight, I have seen them in concert 4 times (all in Omaha, which actually has a pretty good music scene)
• NowCompleteWith  - Yep.

That's an awesome idea for an album review Paw. Keep it up, sir. It is appreciated.

Woohoo! A new series from Paw! :)

For a first episode/review, I thought it was nicely presented and explained well enough. I will have to agree a bit with NoahClue22 in that including the full song may have dragged things out a bit and that maybe including a minute long sample could have worked. Maybe one more musical sample or two (without giving away too much of the album, of course) to really entice us into checking out the songs themselves. I think that's a little part of what made "Full Circle" really enjoyable; the snippets were sprinkled in such a way that it made viewers really intrigued to want to go seek out the songs and musicians behind them.

But enough about that series and back to "Wi-Fidelity". It did its job well enough in making me want to check out Zero7 (it's always good to have some more downtempo stuff on the side for a more mellow, chilled out mood) and I will definitely be curious to see where you'll go with this series and what albums you'll be taking a look at. B)
• GTO Neko  - Gotta thank, of all things, MTV for introducing me
avatar
Years ago, I came upon them around 2001 like you did with Zero 7 for their first album. It was all in part thanks to MTV (back when they were still TRULY active with music videos) when they had the video for "Destiny".

It was definitely thanks to their variations in that one song that it almost felt like an R&B song than an Electronic as you pointed out, and I honestly thought that that's what they were. Glad I was wrong for that, but I'll definitely look into the other 2 albums before I consider the latest one.

I guess it's like with one of my other favorite artist/groups, The Pet Shop Boys, that their albums will vary in feel and will be a hit or miss recommendation. Hopefully sometime soon, I might be able to join the illustrious Paw, Lee, Spoony and the others as a fellow reviewer for shows, games, movies and such to help spread out the love for more music that others might not have heard. :s
• tiggerpete
not my style of music, but a good thorough review, I must say I like your style, keep it up.

(my style is rock of all kinds, with metal first and foremost, but I do love me some ska as well)

Not sure why, but this song threw me back to one of my favourites:
Finley Quaye - Dice (feat. William Orbit)

Paw, dare I ask what you think about this song?

Honestly,I'm very disappointed.
I really don't see what's so special about this electrocrap and don't understand why anyone who loves music as much as you do could even listen to it.
Though everyone's opinion in what's important in music differs,I can't stand it when it's JUST notes arranged to form a melody with some experimental vocals over it.
To me it's more important to hear the musician play the notes on a guitar(or other instrument),it just conveys the song much more effectively.Just the little details and things make it worth it.I mean you couldn't compare any techno music to something like Jimi Hendrix or SRV or any good heavy metal band. With SRV you can hear the guys fingers on the guitar strings and you feel the guy hitting the notes. With this type of music it's just a bunch of synthesized emotionless notes.I mean when you hit the notes into a computer and have them synthesized the feeling is gone. One of the reasons I loved the early Black Sabbath albums was because they were perfect in their imperfections. In those days you couldn't go back and just touch up a couple of spots with a computer. It was all REAL!

I've never really listened to electro before, but I have to say I do like that track at the end of the video "medicine man", it's a really good and interesting mix of acoustic and synthetic sounds combined into one.
It's good to see some music reviews on the site, being a music geek myself (I even study Music Technology at university) Paw quickly became one of my favourites on the site, solidified when he produced the Give 'em the Boot albums on his punk full circle. It's harder to review music the say, films, because there is definite criteria of what makes a "bad" movie, but with music thats much more difficult. I like a lot of the same punk stuff as Paw, but I also like a lot of hip-hop (despite being a white guy from Scotland).

Good stuff, hope to see more of this kind of thing.

We still have a decent music scene here in Omaha, but it's lost a lot of stream from what it used to be. It's not nearly as good as it once was. I remember A.P. called it the next Seattle, but alas, I think those days are behind us now.

An excellent video, Paw. Your style is really professional, insightful and well-researched. While Zero7's music isn't my cup of tea, I thought this was a good review to watch and certainly got me more interested in electronica than I was before.
One quibble I have is that playing the whole song may have made the ending drag a bit, but other than that this was a very encouraging first episode.

Thanks for all the input guys. I'll trim the final music portion a bit. And don't worry, I'll be doing a wide mix of music style throughout the series. Next time, something the metal-heads will enjoy...
Oh.. and I might drop the "paws" rating system. Seemed clever at the time.
• Stern
I liked that Medicine Man song. I might have to check them out. Very good series, I hop e you continue it.

I've got a album to throw in the mix. Last weekend I found out Brian Setzer's got a new cd: "Songs From Lonely Avenue". After a few listens I'm rather hooked on some of the tracks. You mentioned your Ska era of the 90s so this one might be up your alley.
• tastyfake
I think you should cover 3-4 records per episode and keep each one a bit shorter. Do it the magazine way - put some popular shit on the cover and have a bunch of golden nuggets inside.

Paw!! Thank you .. I have NEVER heard of this band before and that beat wasnt to bad, had me tapping my foot while listening to it.

I hope to see more of these in the very near future :)
• Heinzketchup  - Your best work
This is by far your best work. I'm not a big fan of music but this kind of professional review is what keeps me coming back to the website.
• Jutsushine  - What crap! You call that music?
avatar
I hope you will also do some rock and metal reviews (if you can find any new rock or metal that's worth while...sigh.).

"Ever feel like you were born in the wrong time? Like, you should have been born earlier, when the music was real.
Like the 70's?
Earlier. Like the early 70's..."

That track at the end really didn't showcase anything that would make me interested in the album. If anything, I felt myself agreeing with you that it's not the best starting album for this band. I'll give their other album a look, though.

Your format is interesting, though I can't quite put my finger on it; you're missing something in your method of review. I'm sure you'll find it though.

Might I recommend you try a review of the album "V" by Spock's Beard? It's a clever 6 track album with some really catchy songs covering multiple musical genres (sometimes within a single track).

Well, for starters thank god theirs finally a music review section. And also thank god theirs a reviewer out their willing to take alternative music, underground and less heard of and bring it to peoples ears. Perhaps not appreciated by most, but hey, that's the price of being different from the common commercial radio stations listener.

A great template to start a new show, I like the back story and if you've never heard of the band try this first suggestion and also an analysis of the album, key songs, strong points, lacking areas and so on.

A few things (if I may). Intros to particular songs would be better than a full song, youtube and myspace can take care of that nowadays. For example the energetic jazz fusion of blah blah track (15 second or so snippet) and then in contrast the mellow and ambience sounds of blah black track (16.5 second or so snippet) as a way of showing off the album. Particular reasons why that song was written (love life, tradegy, world crisis, etc) would be pretty cool... but that's more in-depth stuff.

A few more albums being reviewed on the one episode would be cool 3 or 4 just to tide us over till next releases.

Lastly, album art getting a mention is sometimes cool, sometimes hearing a back story where it emerged is pretty interesting at times.

Anyway, enough rambling. Keep up the alternative wave of music, theirs plenty to choose from and not enough time to listen to it.

Whoa, that's some good stuff right there. I'm immediately adding them to the "must get these albums" list.

Overall, review is pretty good, but no need for the whole song at the end. Takes up an unnecessarily large proportion of the video.
• lemingne
Awesome keep it up

Don't change a thing

Keep the song! That's what you need to discover a new band. Full lenght song!
