Man, I love retro game music (in fact, I try to write it myself!), and your visual styling for this countdown was just fantastic.
I LOVED the title theme to Sim City, I even recorded it to a tape cassette just so I can listen to it without the game being on, and while my own top 9/10 list might be a little different, we definitely would see eye to eye on several songs from this era of gaming!
Some that I also liked were titles like Rising Sun (opening/title theme to Final Fantasy Adventure/Seiken Desetsu 1), Fear of the Heavens (Title them to Secret of Mana), and a few others. :)
Oh, and MACGUFFIN GET!

06.18.2009 - 22:14 | LegotoadetoYou're going to tell me that the greatest musical moments in gaming history were all SNES or earlier?! Unbelievable. There are loads of epic musical moments in games that happened post SNES. Though as this list is based on your personal experience, I'll just have to assume you stopped gaming after the SNES era. ;)

06.19.2009 - 03:05 | Lee is Still GamingWhat the fuck part of 1987-1994 do you not understand, Legotoadeto?
All the disclaimers in the world don't work on some of these kids. Shit, I remember that time James Rolfe used 7 disclaimers and his fans responded by getting Doug banned from YouTube because they still didn't get the joke!

08.27.2009 - 21:30 | NightStarXInteresting.
You WOULD have a point... if it didn't blatantly say in the TITLE "Old School Edition".
And then again if it the video didn't DELIBERATELY say that it was from 1987-1994.
You moron.
I swear, some people just type the stupidest shit instead of using their brains for 3 seconds. *facepalm*
But I guess not all of us can have an IQ that extends into triple digits, apparently.

I don't think that any list of great retro gaming music would be complete without at least a nod to The Terminator for the Sega CD. Seriously, just listen to this: ( http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=- utO7xpuZdA ). And that's just the first level.
Oh, and the Lotus Turbo Challenge 2 theme deserves a mention as well: ( http:// www.youtube.com/watch? v=LQSsq7HCNHw ), though I suppose Benzaie covered that one for you.
Finally, if you're going to put a Final Fantasy song in the mix, I'd argue that it should be One-Winged Angel from FFVII: ( http:// www.youtube.com/watch? v=Yn71hIsm0U8 ).
Still, this was a decent countdown. Thanks for sharing.

NO MENTION OF THE CRYSTAL THEME!!! From every Final Fantasy game ever made!?!?!
i will never forget.......
sitting as a child, staring at my tv screen. The crystal theme drilling itself into my head. just looking at the black crystal. and wondering, should i use the lute.......
should i go back 2000 years in the past to destroy the evil demon that would cause this time paraox over and over. or just sit here, ....
and listen to the music
THAT SONG ROCKS!!!!!

I really enjoyed the way this review/rating of videogame songs was done.
I love how tongue-in-cheek it was and how informative at the same time. Also, you didn't have to swear or use (too) offensive language. When you did say something it was to your own mind and we all do that don't we?
Loved the concept, can't wait to seen the next set.
You should definitely take a look at Black for the PS2 for that review. Really good soundtrack in some places.

I haven't played some of those games, but the songs are true works of art.
As far as newer memories go, I would definitely have Engineering from System Shock 2, and Yell Dead Cell from Metal Gear Solid 2. The former conjures suspense and intensity, and the latter invokes sheer insanity, just from its opening. The moment you hear it, you know that shit is about to go down.
Regarding older memories, the very first game I owned was Sonic the Hedgehog 2, so there is no way that I wouldn't have either Emerald Hill Zone or Chemical Plant Zone. I'd probably also throw in the Mike Tyson's Punchout fight theme.
Fantastic job, Paw, and great job giving the video itself a retro game feel!

06.18.2009 - 22:36 | DemonSonic 2 was filled with epically awesome music.
I wish people remembered it for more than just its Casino Zone music...

06.18.2009 - 22:36 | DemonMakes me sad that Neverhood fell just out of this range...hope to see some music from that, if you played it.
Sad not to see anything from any of the Phantasy Star games, but it seems like you didn't have a Sega so that's understandable =3 It's always interesting to see what people mark as important growing up in their lives, game-wise, between Sega and Nintendo kids XD Sorta sad that nowadays, there aren't as many exclusive titles. =/

.. tho i kinda miss Mega Man 2 - Dr. Wily Stage 1 for the NES. That was the one that really got me into videogame music, and Lifeforce (Salamander) - stage 3.
-
06.18.2009 - 22:58 | lordsandroGood top 9.
The Monkey Island music is realy good.
My favorite game music is from Duke Nukem 3D.
And just to warn you. If in your next top 9 there is no Doom 2...well a lot of people I know will want you dead. :D
Personaly for me one of the best game music pieceses is Theory of a Deadman – Santa Monica from Fahrenheit/Indigo prohesy. This song just wrap up the game and you have to play the game to understand just how great this song is and just how it fits.
-
Such a beautiful classic, although, I must admit, I never played through it properly until late this decade.

xD Persona 4 reference! You've played the game? If so I envy you dude >w<
Awesome Awesome Awesome video dude. Probably one of the most well written, composed and editted ones on the site man. Not everyday someone turns a top 9 / 10 / 11 list into a full on narative story sereies, let alone a good one.
-
06.18.2009 - 23:02 | ThaluikhainWell done...these sort of lists often feel pretty flat, but the way you did it kept it interesting, though the bickering thing never works for anyone.
I'd have mentioned Doom, C&C and XDAS, though they might have come later.

06.18.2009 - 23:09 | WartexWow! Good work on this Paw. I can tell how a lot of work was put into this. Nice touch with the retro gaming style and the mini-pixelated-you. The themes you mentioned were cool and did evoke emotions. Plus the ending theme was awsome.

cool. Paw listens to CarboHydroM too. Didn't expect to hear that at the end, but tying it with the original snes music was epic.

06.18.2009 - 23:57 | FCRCool list, but not what I would have choosen (obviously).
In my mind, Dancing Mad from FF VI is the the greatest piece of video game music ever made, but I can understand choosing the Opera Scene.
However, if you want Koji Kondo SNES awesomeness, it really should be the ending theme to Yoshi's Island. Fucking impressive is all I have to say about that.
