With all respect for Uematsu, I don't think he deserves the title of being the best video game composer.
Yes, he made some great music, but only the music he composed in the SNES era could be called particularly good. Everything before and since then was, while alright, and having one or another great composition, more mediocre than anything.
Now Michiru Yamane I can live with.

The SNES era(and even the NES era) had some of the best music ever composed for video games! I make this wild assertion, because Uematsu had a lot of limitations working with 8 bit systems! It takes a hell of a lot of talent to make something memorable and entrancing for an 8-bit game. Now Uematsu by no means wasn't the only one to do that, but he probably has more experience then most of the people on this list. Have you even heard how amazing the music has transitioned from the original form to real composed music as done by the Black mages and performed by the Stockholm symphony orchestra on the Distant worlds albums? Transcendent, to say the very least.
Now I don't care much for the Final Fantasy games after VII, but until Uematsu left, all of them had masterful musical scores. We're not just talking about SNES-era games, we're talking about VII, VIII, IX, and X. Have you heard the soundtrack to Advent children? Not a good movie, but spectacular soundtrack. Don't even begin to pretend Uematsu isn't the John Williams of video games.

Paw, You took this way above the original two episodes and it was well worth the year long wait. Nice play on the episode name too since it's right around the corner and that particular team of composers has contributed so much. (Even more so from what I've heard in the beta.)
You've presented this in such a unique style going way above and beyond the standard top whatever list and turned this into story that keeps people hanging on the edge of their seats as to what will happen next. The self referential humor on the game worlds you visit also helps it a ton such as the slime invasion. (DQ4 might have served better with the addition of a Slime King) If I step over the bounds, I'm proud to proclaim it regardless. THIS is what something like Captain N The Game Master should have been if there wasn't a Top 9 going on. (And don't get me wrong, that show did have some good stuff and I have the DVDs. However taking a game world and twisting it into something that barely resembles the original just doesn't work very well.)
I must admit I knew most of the Japanese composers, however the American ones I was a little mystified simply because I never played them. I guess growing up on JRPGs primarily limited what I know.
If there's one thing that's bugged me through the last two episodes, it's the fact that you had the Zeromus background and it wasn't scrolling. However this is an extremely nitpicky thing and should not detract anything from the series.
As for the top 3, you've dropped hints already pointing at two composers. Koji Kondo for his work on Mario and Zelda, as well as Nobuo Uematsu for Final Fantasy. However one remains. I have two guesses. First, Noriyuki Iwadare for his work on Lunar (among many MANY other games) which you put in your Side Note. My other guess is based on the fact that you put it in this video. Koichi Sugiyama for his work on Dragon Quest. Those four are all easily worth of a #1 however I could be completely wrong and I look forward to seeing if I've correctly guessed your personality.
P.S. ...What a reversal after your Let's Play of KQ5 too. I'm surprised you didn't ring Cedric's neck when he charged at you and the fact your "in a game again" statement has come (I know...) Full Circle.

That ... was freaking AWESOME in every conceivable way. You obviously worked extremely hard on this and it really payed off well. All of the video game worlds, references, jokes, and music was very well chosen and placed. I don't think it could get much better.
I'm glad that I knew all the composers on your list so far so I can appreciate them more than I would otherwise. I recognized them all the moment their music started playing and I'm especially glad to see Yoko Shimomora, Yasunori Mitsuda, and Akira Yamaoka on the list. They are among my favorites as well, although all the composers here are awesome.
I really can't wait to see the second part of this video. So much worked about this one, that I really can't guess how you would try and top it. I especially want to say that your versions of King's Quest 5 and Dragon Warrior were freaking amazing.
I know I've probably gone on too long, but I just really want to get across how I can really see the work you put into it. Amazing job Paw.

I think it's kind of a given that Koji Kondo, Hip Tanaka and Nobuo Uematsu are 1-3. Rika Muranka had also better be mentioned, even though her grasp of Gaelic is rather poor. (Or whoever did the lousy gaelic>english translation Capcom posted). My gaelic is exceptionally rusty, but even I noticed the errors.
As far as non-Japanese go, I'm fond of Robert Prince, Tommy Tallarico, Kelly Bailey, Gerard Marino and Martin O'Donnell, among others.
@Paw. Keep up the good work, fellow audiophile.

11.06.2010 - 02:47 | Critic Fan JillThis has been a truly epic top 9 thus far. So, as we are building up to the last battle with Dark Paw, would it be safe to say that IT'S THE FINAL COUNTDOWN!!!!
Hehe, couldn't help it, I can't help but wonder where Goggles is though.

@Dragoniangirl
What? What are you, an 8-year old Justin Bieber fan? Games and movies are made or broken by good quality, memorable themes/leitmotifs or lack thereof.
Do you think Star Wars and Lord of the Rings would have done nearly as well without John Williams and Howard Shore?
The same is true for games. I submit that Final Fantasy really would have been Square's final game without Uematsu. Or Halo would be a mediocre FPS ripping off a half a dozen better FPS games without it's Score. (More mediocre than it actually is, anyway).

If only everyone could create their top (5/8/9/10/11/15) lists in as entertaining a manner! I've had fun watching top lists for a long time now, but never as much fun as this video game adventure!

No insult intended.
I digress, as a wise man once said: "Music is like fetish sex. It will make one man vomit and a different man fall in love."
I had a dozen aunts, uncles and grandparents hammering music appreciation and theory into me from a young age. My mom was really pissed when my aunt got me a pennywhistle and began teaching me Rebel Songs. She almost smacked me when she heard me playing Follow me up to Carlow. These days I stick with low D whistle and bodhran.

This was sheer genius. I loved all the little in-jokes and the writing was absolutely hilarious.
It's only in recent years that I've woken up to just how important music is to a game's atmosphere, whereas before it was something I always took for granted. It was really fascinating learning more about these different composers; I'm glad Akira Yamaoka made the list, as I consider his work on the Silent Hill series to be phenomenal.
Also, gotta love Spoony chewing the scenery.
Can't wait to see part 2!
