Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys

Really good list. I do have to say that I'm not familiar with all of the groups but it seems like a really good mix. I will say that I am a big fan of the Social Distortion album and they do one of the best covers of Ring of Fire I've heard.
As for my favorite albums:
Electric Six - Fire
Metallica - S&M
Johnny Cash - Live at Folsom Prison
Weird Al Yankovic - Bad Hair Day
Disturbed - The Sickness
Rammstein - Sehnsucht
Marilyn Manson - Antichrist Superstar
Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP
Insane Clown Posse - The Great Milenko
Santana - Supernatural
Chef Aid - The South Park Album
Jimmy Buffett - Songs You Know By Heart
Michael Jackson - HIStory
Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill
Garth Brooks - The Hits
Back to the Future Soundtrack

Great list paw! Enjoyed it all the way through
I've talked to Zero 7 on Mixcloud. Amazing guys. Theire knowledge of the Chillout Culture is amazing. I love their work.
And Les Rhythm Digitales made one of my favourite Electro tracks: Sometimes with Nik Kershaw. A very lovely track.
Yo paw, any love for Dubstep? Been enjoying Dubstep music for the past 2 years now. I love stuff from Skream, benga, Magnetic Man, Rusko, Burial and Hudson Mohawke. Amazing stuff all the way.

10.09.2010 - 01:13 | PutridBeingI know you choose Master of Puppets but what about ...And Justice for All? Can't remember which video it was but I remember you saying a friend gave you this CD and it changed your whole perspective on music. Seems like reason enough to me for it to be on the list.
As for my favorite CD's it is heavily Metal based and most probably wouldn't like.
1. Sacrilege - The Fifth Season
The production, the music, the vocals, EVERYTHING is perfect on this CD. I can easily listen to it 3 times a day.
2. Chthonic - Seediq Bale
Changed my whole perspective on the as far as I'm concerned dying genre of Black Metal. The brutal music and the female vocals from Sandee Chen Shan-Ni as well as the erhu and the CD's subject matter (Taiwanese myths and legends) breathe new complete new life in an otherwise stale genre.
3. Project 86 - Truthless Heroes
Only one on this list probably not Metal. I love this CD for all the same reasons as #1 and again can listen to it multiple times a day.
4. Metallica - All 1980's CDs.
5. Megadeth - All CDs
Grew up on #4 and #5 so it has a special place for me.
I can keep going but it's hard picking favorites for me.

- Wir Sind Helden - Soundso
- Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral

10.09.2010 - 01:35 | Drew39Great list man. Im definitely going to listen to some of those more obscure ones.
A couple I feel need a mention are:
Everything You Want - Vertical Horizon
One of the first albums I got on my own in my early teens and it pushed me to the point of seeing them as my first concert by myself. They are an outstanding band, with moving beats and just outstanding lyrics. I find "Underwater" from their album Go to be one of the most beautiful things Ive ever heard, and I even had the chance to hear it as an acoustic request when I saw their lead singer at an acoustic show a couple months ago. They have been in my top 5 favorite bands constantly for the last 10 years, and I love every one of their albums, but this one best exemplifies who they are. And Matt Scannell, their frontman, is I think one of the most underrated singer/songwriter/ guitarists around, and a great guy to talk to in person.
Absolution - Muse
Ill be blunt: Muse is my favorite band and has been for over 5 years. Ever since I got introduced to them when Absolution was released Ive been hooked, to the point where any time theyve toured within 100 miles in the last 4 years Ive gone to that show. While most fans consider Origin of Symmetry their favorite, I think because this was my introduction to them that made me pick it as my favorite. I always enjoy their studio tracks, but I tend to mainly listen to live songs, since they always just blow everything to a new level live. And in my opinion, they are the best live act in existence today.

10.09.2010 - 01:35 | HipGunslinger
I've got to say Paw, I'm a little surprised to not see Tom Waits *anywhere* on this list. That aside, if there's one album I could reccommend to appeal to your electronic sensibilities it would be
Faultline: Closer Colder
David Kosten was a classical clarinetist until an accident damaged a lung and made him practically incapable of playing his taken instrument. He turned to electronic music to continue his passion and Closer Colder is one of the most eye opening albums I've ever heard in my life. If you can find the track "Awake" to listen to, do it... it's brutal.
Good list though, nice to know there are other fans out there.
-
10.09.2010 - 01:36 | Grinning_ColossusLots of good ones on this list. I freaking love the Presets. My tops would have to be:
Catch Without Arms - Dredg
Relationship of Command - At The Drive-In
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness - The Smashing Pumpkins
Lift Your Skinny Wrists Like Antennas To Heaven - Godspeed You Black Emperor!
(I'm going to cheat a little here, as it's technically two albums) The Protomen Opera - The Protomen
The Slim Shady LP - Eminem
Dr. Octagonecologyst - Dr. Octagon
Freak Show - The Residents
Leviathan - Mastodon
Haunted - Poe
Alice - Tom Waits
and those are the ones I can think of right now.

10.09.2010 - 01:54 | DWBReally awesome list, good job!
Thoughts on selections: I nearly flipped my shit when you said your number one. Daft Punk, for me, was my introduction to electronic music and everything changed for the better. It is a priority-A PRIORTY-to buy this album again on iTunes just so I could hear their "Together" encore. Cannot WAIT for Tron:Legacy to come out.
I't will be legendary! :want:

10.09.2010 - 01:56 | Mad_Man_Moony
Figured Daft Punk would be up there. I'm DEFINITELY checking out Firewater. Though when you said love/hate relationship are you referring to Plastic Beach? If so what was your beef with it?
Let's see...some of MY favorite albums...I find it very hard to get into modern music so I like a lot of older stuff like Lou Reed's Transformer, Dire Straits' Greatest Hits, Devo's Q: Are we not men?. As for modern...well...I find it hard to get into modern stuff. Though when I do find a good band I worship them. A couple novelty bands like Austrian Death Machine and Warp 11 appeal to my love of movies. Though the one artist I follow no matter what? Cee-lo Greene. I actually got the soundtrack to The OTher Guys and borrowed my friend's copy of Twilight Ecclipse Soundtrack JUST because he contributed singles you can't get anywhere else. I love his compilations, I love his work with Danger Mouse, I love his solo work, love it love it love it! Surprised you haven't mentioned him at all actually, I'd think he'd really appeal to you. But hey, I'm rambling now so I'll stop before I get ahead. Toodles my man! -MMM
-
Can't help but agree with you on your Daft Punk choice. I had no idea that was mashed on the fly, that revelation blew my mind.
I love the Gorillaz, especially their new album.
Sgt. Pepper's a classic, and probably my brother's #1 pick.
The first album I ever owned was Weird Al's Running with Scissors, and I was hooked immediately.
It's hard to think of specific albums, since I usually go for individual songs.
-
10.09.2010 - 02:00 | MetalMike007Wow, I mean, I like some electro stuff but not necessarily some of what you named, but still I love that you included some great unknowns here, like Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. Yeah, see if I tried to make a list like this, I would undoubtedly forget some and then come back a few months later and change my mind, but right now, my top 10 albums probably are:
1. Dirt/FaceLift by Alice in Chains - I can't pick between these two, but I absolutely love that you picked Jar of Flies
2. Crack the Skye by Mastodon - this album regularly puts me in a state of nirvana
3. The Final Frontier by Iron Maiden - easily their best and most emotional album of theirs since Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
4. Invaders Must Die by The Prodigy - I'm a recent convert to The Prodigy, but I love so many songs on here because they're so good at pumping you up
5. Boggy Depot by Jerry Cantrell - As you can tell, I adore anything Jerry Cantrell touches, and I'm really disappointed that critics basically wrote off his solo album as "AIC-lite", because a lot of songs are really layered and rocking at the same time
6. Songs from Lonely Avenue by Brian Setzer - I like that you included a lot of rockabilly, but I wish you had included Brian Setzer in there, because I absolutely love The Dirty Boogie, but right now I've been listening to his newest album, and it's just as good
7. The Real Thing by Faith No More - I've been a huge fan of Mike Patton and early Faith No More, and this is clearly their best album
8. Dethalbum II by Dethklok - I saw these guys with Mastodon last Halloween, and their new stuff is even better than their last album
9. Hellbilly Deluxe by Rob Zombie - I'm a recent fan of Rob Zombie, but his first solo album is definitely the best
10. Use your Illusion II by Guns 'n Roses- Mostly for "You Could Be Mine"
by the way, if you're a fan of Firewater (yes, I have, in fact heard of them - one of my best friends in high school was a huge ska punk and crust ska fan), you may want to check out the World Inferno/Friendship Society. They're sort of like if Tom Waits had a cabaret played by a punk band joined by a ska horn section, so you'd probably like them. They never made it anywhere outside the indie punk scene, but they have easily the most hardcore fanbase I've ever seen - that same friend of mine has seen literally every show they've ever done, and everyone at their concerts knows each other by name. Personal favorite album is either "Red-Eyed Soul" or "The True Story of the Bridgewater Astral League"
-
10.09.2010 - 02:06 | DWBHaven't to Demon Days Fully yet but what i'm hearing is fantastic. Interesting how opinions on Plastic Beach is starting to split. Yet another CD I need to listen to.
Justice is just epic in any form of understanding. Xavier(1 half of the duo)has been in the producer's chair alot nowadays, and he's recently been producing the debut album for a band called "Jamaica"(formerly knowned as "PoneyPoney") Look them up.

10.09.2010 - 02:07 | Kyo Kusanagi16
Really good list, might look into some oof those myself.
For me, some of my favorite albums come from Metallica, who at least had a good song every album, though Ride the Lightning and Master of Puupets are definetly my favorites, since Metallica really helped me get through a really depressing time of my life just when things looked at their worst, Fade to Black saved me.
Other favorites include most Dream Theater albums, Foo Fighters, Avenged Sevenfold's recent Nightmare album, and Black Tape by The Explosion.
-
10.09.2010 - 02:12 | domanagood list of songs man. in my opinion its missing a few =D
for instance
E nomine = Die Prophezeihung Klassik
nightwish = end of an era
:shy: ELO = the xanadu soundtrack which btw has what i count as one of the most awesome breakup songs ever. the fall
-
10.09.2010 - 02:14 | static40
Some of my favorites (not in order):
Nightwish- Dark Passion Play
Bad Religion- Against the Grain
Rise Against- The Sufferer and the Witness
B.B. King- Genius Loves Company
Symphony X- The Odyssey
HammerFall- Crimson Thunder
Bowling For Soup- Sorry For Partyin'
The Arrogant Worms- Live Bait
Three Days Grace- Life Starts Now
Sum 41- Does This Look Infected?
-
10.09.2010 - 02:18 | Zweitplatzierungsboyi was pretty surprised that Die Fantastischen Vier were on your list, especially Lauschgift (their best und last good one, imo) but I was also surprised that there wasn't any Mars Volta, Tool or Nine Inch Nails on it.
In case anybode cares, some of my favorite albums ever:
The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute
Gorillaz - Demon Days
Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile
Sonic Youth - A Thousand Leaves
Blur - Blur
Clint Mansell & The Kronos Quartet - The Fountain OST
Mono & World's End Girlfriend - Palmless Prayer
The Protomen - Act 2: The Father of Death
-
Well, I agree that you can not please everyone with a top 50 list so I will not debate the merits of your choices. That is a dick move. Lets just say that I liked the list and felt that the albums worked...for you. Your Alternative choices, like morphine, Nirvana, and Alice were the same as mine. These were definetly songs that formed the listener that I am today.
But I have to say, through out that whole list, you couldn't find room for Tool? Now I now that punk and electro are more your speed but the glory of Tool is not lost on you. Never have I heard a band that spoke to me so clearly as they have. Maynards voice is gold and all the other band mates weave musical glory. Lateralis, easily one of the best and most anticipated albums of my life. I saved up all my money (which was not much, I was homeless at the time) for the album and batteries for my walkman. Thus being my only music player at the time. =(
Now I understand that we all take our own journeys in life and that is also true of music. So I understand if you never gave it a chance because it was not on your radar. So I ask now, if you are not a fan, or have never heard much of their work just try it out and tell me what you think.

Thanks for this man, I love your reviews. Music fuels me as I know it fuels you. Keep on listening. :music:

W00t Jar of Flies!! =D IMO the best EP ever created. Just seven songs of pure, beautiful melancholy captured perfectly by four men. Staley's peak performance right there.
Here's my top 10, it's hard putting them in order (in fact 1-5 are interchangeable)
1. Alice in Chains (Tripod)/Dirt - Alice in Chains (perfect albums for being either pissed off, depressed, or just in the mood to hear masterfully played, yet gloomy guitar riffs, soulful harmonies and a beautifully heavy sound)
2. Dopes to Infinity/Superjudge - Monster Magnet (Layers of guitars, mellotrons, vocals and psychedelic madness for your ears to dissect, great mix of hard rockers, poppy ballads, and eerie psychedelia)
3. King for a Day... Fool for a lifetime - Faith No More (the best experimental rock/metal album ever, everyone is perfectly in sync with each other, going from jazzy "love" songs to noisy metal monsters)
4. Superunknown - Soundgarden (the sound of four men reaching the absolute peak of their creativity, complete with odd time signatures, soaring vocals, heavy-ass riffs with an underbelly of masterful melodies)
5. Astro-Creep 2000 - White Zombie (one of the heaviest albums ever, yet still catchy enough to be listenable)
6. Purple - Stone Temple Pilots (Scott Weiland at his best before going into his trebly nasal voice and after his Morrison-esque growl on Core, combined with the incredible and unique songwriting and riffs from the Deleo brothers)
7. White Pony - Deftones (the most pissed off "fuck on the floor and break shit" songs (as Henry Rollins once put it) combined with the most haunting melodies and ethereal sounds you'll ever hear)
8. In Loving Memory Of... - Big Wreck (an incredibly genre-defying album that contains upbeat southern-style jams with grungy heavy-hitters and beautiful acoustic ballads)
9. King's X - Dogman (another genre-defyer which has hints of grunge, soul, metal and prog)
10. Siamese Dream - Smashing Pumpkins (Corgan may be an egotistical prick, but he had at one point such a talent for creating beauty out of melancholy and angst)
BTW what was the name of that Superdrag song? It appealed to my 90's alt-rock loving senses. =D
-
I'm really not familiar with most of these albums; is there any way we can get a written list for our own musical scavenger hunts?
And I dearly love Ben Folds Five--Rockin' the Suburbs. It has a great balance and a sort of 'stick it to the man' tone that's fun and comforting at the same time. Oh, and Queens of the Stone Age--Songs for the Deaf. I must have listened to that album every day for three months straight on my commute to school.
Yay for more Paw! =D

Great list. Slightly obscure and showing not only your specific tastes in music, but also your deep respect and love as well.
Some of my favs... Well, Frizzle Fry from your list. Others not on list: The Presidents of the United States of America - self titled, U2 - The Joshua Tree, The Who - Quadrophenia + Live At Leeds, Rush - Grace Under Pressure, The Clash - London Calling, Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magic, Yes - Fragile, Victor Wooten - Palmystery, Jaco Pastorious - Epic Record's compilation.
Please, please, please check out some of these albums if you have not heard them. And keep on doing music related videos (even though we love the Let's Plays)! Oh, and thank you for everything you've done for this site. You're the best!

Oh, I'd forgotten all about the self-titled album from the Presidents of the United States of America! I first got this album when it came out on cassette when I was in Junior High. Loved every second. Took a while for the innuendo to dawn on my little girl mind. But I still wanna be 'naked and famous'.

Have you heard of Longwalkshortdock?
My Cousin gave me his album "Casual Tea" since we both share a taste in electronic music and let me tell you..
I'll never forget him. Ever.
It's so hard to describe though, there are so many samples and bits and pieces of so many stylings, it leaves me humbled. Check him out.

No FX was awesome live ^^
But it was more the energy on stage than music..
Saw them this summer @ Peace and love in sweden.
And deamon days are my favorit of the gorillaz albums.
Also thanks for introducing me to zero 7. Love Destiny.
And alive is good, but not my favorit.
My favorit that just comes to mind would prolly be Flobots fight with the tools, even tho ive only heard about them like a month ago.
