I saw this movie once on TV, only because my dad liked Prince and he told me about it one time. I kind of got lost and even bored, so I didn't even pay attention. I do like Prince though for his music. And yet, I did not know he played all the instruments in his songs. That's amazing. Yeah, I do like the music in this, of course. I wasn't fond of the love interest either. I hate girl characters that are basically just a (sex) prize. Anyway, looks like Disney is up next week. :D And the first full length animated feature, no less.

For those who don't know, Prince (or whatever he's calling himself these days) got his start in music clubs around the Twin Cities. Even for people who don't care for his music, he's a favorite son of the Twin Cities.
Much like how folks who don't find Garrison Keillor particularly funny still acknowledge him as our king.

Indeed, my sister teaches college freshman english (in Milwaukee. As hostile territory as there can be) and often cites Keillor in lectures on monologuing.

Damn, I thought this was going to be about Hendrix. My fault for confusing Purple Rain and Purple Haze so easily...
I've always found Prince a bit of an infuriating artist. I mean, the guy is an amazing guitarist, but... lemme put it this way. He did a cover of While My Guitar Gently Weeps with Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. It contains one of the best guitar solos I have ever heard. And he just... seems to refuse to actually let loose. He sounds way too restrained in almost every song I've ever heard by him.

This movie is just flat out awesome. Whenever Prince (or one of his mouthpieces) isn't onstage it's just hilariously bad in an almost Ed Wood sort of way. It's that rare combination ridiculous (even for the 1980's) egomania, insufferable pretentiousness and utter ineptness that just has you laughing at its delusional sence of self-importance. Then Prince will get onstage and for the next four minutes the movie is I ironically brilliant and amazing.
But did I hear you claim that his follow-up film Under The Cherry Moon was "eventually well received? You're going to have to provide some evidence to back that up, as far as I know it was savaged by both critics & audiences when it first came out, then was immediately & permanately forgotten about and for good reason. a it's really just dull & has forgettable music.

01.25.2013 - 23:51 | DreamcastGood review. But minor quibble: Purple Rain is not a cult movie. It made $68 million in 1984, probably on a nothing budget. That's a pretty decent hit. It's more of a badly dated 80's artifact that reminds of a time when a great soundtrack could make a terrible movie successful.

01.26.2013 - 05:15 | CkashidSnow White, eh? I know that there are a couple versons of that to choose from. I cant't wait for that review! But I'm cusrious, are you planning to review any of the music movies based off the plays of Luis Valdez? I know that Zoot Suit was made into a music movie at least, and rather well handled at that. :)

01.26.2013 - 11:10 | Captain SiberiaI never thought "Purple Rain" was such a good song. That's the thing. It's supposed to be this moving ballad that forms the big climax of the movie, but for me, it's just dull. Everybody in the movie is raving about how good a song it is, but it isn't half as good as the stuff The Kid was doing before. Get us revved up with all the fun, energetic songs from before, and then, "Boring Ballad, Boring Ballad." Yech. And another thing: the manager was getting angry at The Kid WHY exactly? "Damn it, The Kid, your show has too much charisma and personality for me! If you don't stop it, you're fired."
Yeah, the Apollonia song was lame.

Purple Rain could hardly qualify as a "cult movie". Never seen a cult movie that stayed in movie theaters for months after it's initial release with a soundtrack that stayed in the #1 spot on Billboard for 24 weeks. I doubt that you have to explain to real music lovers in your generation who Prince is. When I was a teen growing up in the 80s, no one had to explain to me who the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix were.
Paw's "talking with his hands" B.S. irked the fuck out of me. That and the fact that he was so exasperated that he had to deal with Purple Rain makes me understand why I don't watch this god damn show.
Appolonia was McGuffin who's only purpose was to be hot? That's right. That's exactly right.

Oh my God, Purple Rain... well, almost as pretentious as I thought it would be. The story seems thinner than a tadpole's skin and is entirely pointless overall. I feel offended that The Kid is more egotistical than Tom Cruise, and Applonia is all looks and no personality; I'm getting inflicted with Darkness Induced Audience Apathy! And don't you think that the titular song is sheer Gary-Stu-ness? I'm really sick of that song after hearing it too many times on Sirius.
Compare this overly dramatic piece of crap to another movie that came out around the same time which also involved music and a flawed protagonist with an on-again, off-again girlfriend: Streets of Fire. At least SoF had less annoying characters played by better actors who DON'T chew the scenery and didn't leave too bad a taste in my mouth.

That is what I was hoping to see in this review. A review of the soundtrack within the movie (not just the songs on the Purple Rain soundtrack. If you want every song in the movie you'd have to buy The Time's album, Appolonia Six's whole album and Dez Dickerson's album)
Instead, I got a review of the film, which we all know is bad. The sole reason to see this movie is the music and stage performances, as well as the antics of Morris Day and Jerome Benton.

Eh, I don't know if that's really the case... part of the draw from the start was that Paw would really go in-depth on the songs and talk about his opinions on them, what makes them special/likable/bad and if they even have some hidden layers or meanings, and it feels like he really does that less and less with each passing Music Movies. He's entertaining, but I really DO want to hear more about the music.

Hmmm... I don't think I'd ever go so far as to say Prince is in it more for the music than the fame. Yeah, he's written songs made popular by the likes of The Bangles, Cyndi Lauper, and so on, but man oh MAN does he want credit. Watch just about any interview with the guy in the past 23 years and see if he doesn't, at some point, tell some sob story about people mistaking Nothing Compares 2 U for a Sinead O'Connor original. Only time I think he's ever come through someone else having a hit with his material was Stevie Nicks' Stand Back and I suspect that's mostly because a star-struck Ms Nicks would tell anyone within earshot that Prince helped write that song, even though at the heart of it, she wrote that song over a chord progression she heard in a Prince song. I think he really liked the mysterious image of showing up at Stevie's studio session, playing synths, and disappearing into the night, but I'll bet if she DIDN'T repeat that story as often as she did, we'd know all about it from Prince. Ahhh, don't get me wrong. I love the guy... what a talent! But yeah... a larger-than-life ego to match his larger than life presence. One more thing... HOW DOES HE NEVER AGE? Guy could still pass for 30. It's nuts.

Wouldn't you want credit for songs that you wrote? And to say that he cares about the music significantly less than getting credit for cover songs like Nothing Compares 2 U is ridiculous. The man learned every instruments by ear by the age of 16. He had a stable of artists on warner Brothers by the age of 24. The amount of great music he created in the 80s alone is incredible, yet you dare say he doesn't care about music?

If you though that lues Brothers, and Purple Rain weren't "Music Movies" Then I think that Spice Girls The Movie wuld fall under the same catogoury. I'm interested in you thoughts about it. But I'm not sure if it is the sort of movie you would review. Otherwise you might have to review S Club 7's movie.

01.28.2013 - 04:39 | shy-oneMight I recommend the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou? It's an epic quest based on the Odyssey, and while I wouldn't consider it a traditional MUSICAL, I would consider it a fantastic music movie.
