This song seems to not fit exactly lyric wise with what is happening at the time other then it's "lullaby to close your eyes part" but you seem to forget that since it's such a good song. I have said bad things about Silent 4 in the past but this song is actually one of my favorites ever in video game music....
Actually the song seems to fit more of the mood of the end of Silent Hill 2....but then again a song with lyrics might of actually distracted the ending in that case.
Gotta say though, good pick for a song.
-
02.21.2010 - 02:52 | blackrain88THEN AGAIN, it does fit the entire game plot as a whole in a way. To me, it sounds like Walter singing about his Mother and the people he kills to get to her. "Here's a lullaby to close your eyes" Lullaby because he never had a mother growing up and is doing the killings "for" his mother. "It was always you that I depsised" is talking about the people he kills for her. Even the beginning, he sings about "the love you never gave, I give to you" because hell, it's only an apartment and can't really love him. The song seems to come from Walters POV to me

02.20.2010 - 07:53 | IIoblivionIIThis song is so beatiful is my favorite of the first 4 OST`s followed close by Letter from the lost days... i knew dena was going to show up she is like the silent hill authority in this website.
And btw i love this game i dunno why ppl seem to hate it that much... yes it different from the other ones but it has a pretty good story and for me it was scary as hell.... the first person parts at the second half of the game are just creepy, the ghost of you outside your door... god just creepy
Strawberries!!!!!!!!!! (i spell it wrong? lol?)
-
02.20.2010 - 01:53 | Super_Happy_GuyBecause it deserves to be hated.
Originally, this game was supposed to be a new franchise, but somewhere in the middle of development they decided to make it a Silent Hill game. It was a bad decision.
All locations are well lit, so no more flashlight and creepy shadows. Sure, locations looked good (except the forest, it sucked), but it was significantly less creepy than any previous game.
Also, I guess there was no radio. Why? There's no reason. They should have kept it. If it isn't broken, don't fix it.
Inventory system was just frustrating. Subway tokens takes the same space as an handaxe? Inventories make things more realistic, but do it well, dammit!
Invincible ennemies are just annoying. It wasn't scary at all, it's just ANNOYING!
And the bad guy's running after you, shooting you with dual pistols GANGSTA STYLE! And he's friggin invincible... That was just stupid. It just makes me angry.
There was a lot of boring backtracking, also. Cheap.
Giant amazons (?) burped when you hit them. Who thought that was a good idea? And what was wrong with the nurses? I could understand a redesign (they did it for each game) but why this? Lame.
I was just too bothered by all those useless and frustrating design changes to actually be immersed into the game. Story was interesting, but terrible design prevented me from enjoying it.
Being designed exactly like the others, it would have been great, I'm sure.

Say what you will about SH4 and some of the mistakes it made, but at least Team Silent had the nerve to try something new, which is more than I can say for Climax who can't stop referencing the first two games to death.
Also, it didn't start off as a new franchise, so much as a spin-off of the Silent Hill series. It was to take place within the same universe, but just a different location (Ashfield instead of Silent Hill). The only real change forced on it was the title.
-
02.20.2010 - 21:06 | Super_Happy_GuyIt's not the new stuff that makes the game bad, in fact I like a lot of the new things: the very concept of the "room" is a good idea, the new locations were great for the most part, the story is cool, etc.
Ok, so the iconic pocket flashlight isn't there anymore. That's not a problem. But removing darkness entirely? Hello? It's like removing the boomerang in Zelda!
Sorry, I'm not a big fan of novelty by omission.
Sometimes you may remove some features that didn't work well in previous games or that are no more relevant in a perticular setting, etc. But nothing of this applies to SH4. It was just a deliberate ommission for no apparent reason.
SH4 is just less fun because they removed fun, iconic and fonctionnal elements of SH games for no reason. It's ribs without ribs sauce.
Enjoy your less tasty meal. At least it's different.
-
When did I ever say that the omission of the flashlight was good? By being different, I'm referring to the things it added (first person view, etc.), and the fact that it didn't recycle anything major from the previous games (monster designs, etc.).
I'm not even really disagreeing with your points, but I'd rather appreciate it for the things it did right. Because whatever mistakes it made, at least it's not a bunch of fan service that takes no imagination like the games that came after it.
I prefer that a franchise try something new once in awhile and fail at it somewhat, than always play it safe and just be the same damn thing over and over.

02.20.2010 - 11:12 | Paper_BanjokamiPhelous was the first person to talk about Silent Hill. Now he's focusing on Resident Evil jokes, but Dena's even taking that from him too.
DAMN YOU, DENA! YOU WILL NEVER COMPARE TO PHELOUS!!! NEVAAAAARRRR!!!!!!

Paper_Banjokami, that is a pretty damn silly thing to say now isn't it?
There is nothing to "take away" and besides her first Silent Hill episodes were made way before I did the film review.
But I do know that Dena definitely tries to be like me. Because I'm so... and I ... uhhh... k, she doesn't at all.

02.19.2010 - 22:33 | UmbrelledelicOh yeah, Yamaoka is actually collaborating with Shinji Mikami (he created Resident Evil) on a game.
-
02.20.2010 - 10:30 | Richard WeskerI would think (okay, HOPE) that Yamaoka could still work on the Silent Hill series on a freelance basis, but if he's got a contract with Capcom or whatever, that's probably impossible at this point.
The Silent Hill series just won't be the same without this man. It's always been my belief that alot of what makes these games work so well are the amazing compositions that Yamaoka has been pumping out for the past decade. Since the series is going to continue under Climax for the foreseeable future, I just wonder who they're going to get for music duties.

02.19.2010 - 22:21 | SantalaThat's one amazing track. Thank you Paw for making this video.

02.19.2010 - 22:24 | Ambrose
A pitty that Paw did not play the whole game, a lot of themes of the song are found in the game and vice versa. Not wanting to spoil too much, I will say that it deals with the concept of motherhood, commitment and protection, and AWAKENING THE F*ING DEVIL. The gameplay was a little bit tyring (especialy during the "second run") but the game is well worth the effort to those that appreciate a different and stratling story. Talking about startling, there was this room in that hospital level that... damn...
-
02.19.2010 - 22:32 | UmbrelledelicAww, I wish you used the prologue version of the song. The one where before the singing starts, those keyboard frills backup the main piano riff.

hells yeah. i consider Akira Yamaoka's recent departure the death knell that the Silent Hill series actually received more around Silent Hill 4, Homecoming at the latest. i've been playing the American-made SH games solely to get the most out of the soundtracks, heh. i've always felt SH's instrumental tracks are stronger than the vocal tracks, but this is still a great song

I really do love this song. The beat really hits in just the right place, and the lyrics are sung beautifully.
For an honorable mention, I'd suggest True from Silent Hill 2. The catch with that song is that you can only really get the full impact of it if you hear it within its proper context, and boy, did that song blow me away when I heard it in its proper context.

02.20.2010 - 01:35 | shollern
wait... this version is missing a verse.
there should be a part that goes something like
so insignificant
lying dormant deep inside of me
are you hiding away
lost
under the sewers
maybe flying high
up in the clouds
maybe your happier without me
so many things have been said and need sown
and maybe youd be happier if i had died
i wouldnt be sad at all
and you wont hear me say
im sorry
wither in the light
ill be with you someday
i dont know the exact words, thats how i remember it though. been a while sinse i listened to the song.

Re Shollern:
I believe the lyrics go something like this.
So insignificant
Lying dormant deep inside of me
Are you hiding away, lost
Under the sewers
Maybe flying high in the clouds
Perhaps your happier without me
So many seeds have been sown in the fields
Who could sprout up so blessedly if I had died
I wouldn't be sad at all
You will not hear me say I'm sorry
Where is the light
Is it weeping somewhere softly
Again, taking this from memory but there is definetly a second verse to the actual song, just not the version played in the game I believe.

02.20.2010 - 03:25 | CGALLI really believe that this is actually better than the matal gear solid song. I'm so downloading it and getting so much powntang with it!

Next give us the theme from Gothic 2 and I will start building a shrine and search for a virgin (the last one may take some time  :D ).
-
02.20.2010 - 04:51 | adrasl300Ive always liked how The Silent Hill games incorporated some goth/alternative/darkwave rock sounding parts into the soundtracks instead of just relying on a generic symphonic soundtrack.

02.20.2010 - 10:36 | KaylaKazeAnyone who hasn't played SH4 needs to go watch MangaMinx's let's play of it.
Room of Angel is without a doubt the best SH song. Another great one though is One More Soul To The Call from Homecoming. I'm not sure exactly where it fits into the game, but it's a great song on its own.

02.20.2010 - 16:30 | CyricZMmm, beautiful stuff. Not only Yamaoka's composition, but also Mary Elizabeth McGlynn's lovely vocals.
I only played SH4 once, and I must admit I probably wasn't paying attention to the music at that point in the game.
As for those who wonder the future of the SH series with Yamaoka no longer at Konami, I personally believe that we've come to a proper end to the series. Shattered Memories was a nice sendoff, what with its subverting our expectations and going in a different direction.
"Being designed exactly like the others, it would have been great, I'm sure." - Super_Happy_Guy
And this is why it should end. I've noticed that a lot of SH fans enjoy the classic setup, because they're COMFORTABLE with the atmosphere and setting. The problem is that the series is not supposed to make you comfortable. You're supposed to feel uncertain and paranoid. If you're always expecting monsters to be hideously deformed or cheering because Pyramid Head makes a token appearance, then the series is not doing its job.
It would just be selling out like Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm St.; you're not there to be properly scared, you're there to enjoy your favorite antagonists, and that's a no-no for the genre, in my book.
Anyway, that's why I approved of what Shattered Memories did by changing everything around. It wasn't the best in the series, but at least it tried something different and was enjoyable for that. The psychological aspect was probably the best part of the game, in my opinion.
Nice plug for Dena, by the way :D
