Written by Paw Friday, 20 February 2009 01:10
Covering the free years between the end of high school and the beginning of college (1997 - 1998). A mish-mash of every major influence of the era including the swing and rockabilly revivials.

Great review as always Paw! High School is when I started purchasing compilation albums comprised of ska and punk. The neo swing movement was an awkward, yet thankfully a short period. Kids would actually dress in retro 40s attire like zoot suits.
You earn major win points for mentioning Rocket from the Crypt. You defiantly have unique and eclectic taste. I cant wait till you rip apart the abomination known as RapMetal. 1999 is when mainstream music really tanked. Limp Bizket, Linkin Park, Staind, Kid Rock. Ugghhh. Getting back on topic, did you know that No Doubt is reuniting and Sublime? Well, just the surviving members with the addition of Nick Hexem from 311. Anyway dude, Im really enjoying your series and look forward to more auditory goodness from my past. As I mentioned before, Ska needs a 4th wave! Do plan on delving into the 60s garage rock revival of 2002? ie The Strokes, The Hives, White Stripes, and Jet?

02.20.2009 - 06:54 | Irid alMenieSorry, professore, not Dutch ^.^ German is possible, but if that was Dutch, I'm an American :P
Anyway, nice review, even though I don't actually know any of the bands you talked about... I only knew the song you started with ;)

02.20.2009 - 06:56 | Irid alMenieOh, one thing I forgot to add, Paw... you talked a bit fast on this one, I had some trouble following cause one word just tumbled after another. I don't remember that from your previous vids... Not all of your viewers are native English speakers (see above comment :P) so a tad slower would be appreciated ^.^

At the beginning, he was speaking German. But he has a very thick American accent.
Basically, he said "Hello, please to be called episode 4 from fullcircle!"
or "Hello, I am pleased to announce episode 4 from fullcircle!"
How do I know this? I simply inverted all pronunciation to American letters. lol

Nice Metallica lyric in the intro. Wherever I May Roam.
I love your videos. It's so fun to have those moments where I can go "I know what he's talking about" and laugh about it, and it's nice to learn about so many new artists in the process.

I'm starting to love Full Circle a little more and more with each session. :cheer:
Lately I've been intrigued by the rockabilly and psychobilly side of things so thanks for pointing out a couple of new artists for me to dip my toes into.
Oh yeah, and I definitely remember the swing music and dance boom around that time (is that a reason why this one was called "The Gap Years", what with The Gap commercials that used the swing motif).
Now, since watching you destory Punkorama 10 was ridiculously fun to watch (now I know that CDs are in fact capable of being snapped in half! :woohoo: ), I have a feeling great times will be had watching you delve right into the rap-rock phenomenon (was that boom really just 10 years ago?!)

Oh lord. Nu-Metal and Rap Rock up next. That is gonna be quite awful. Thankfully at that time I was just getting into metal more and was getting into the older better stuff like Metallica, Megadeth, Testament, etc...
Still loving these trips back through your musical history growing up. Even found a song or two I got a kick out of :D

Sissy metal by my definition, but at least metal! :p
Just kinding, great work! I'm always curious music wise, you got me lookin' into some of the stuff you mentioned. (that reverend dude sounds awfully weird, dark and heavy. you got my attention with that guy)
Keep it up!

Just the other day I pretty much figured that Nu Metal was one of my clearly loved genres but it seems like you think different. I find it funny how our musical tastes are on different worlds =D
I know that's suppose to be how everyone is but seriously... different worlds! You're into Ska and Punk while I'm dipped deep into Thrash Metal and Alternative. Not Death Metal. That's where I say it's gone too far.
At least I'm into Progressive Rock too ^^;

Whaaa? No Doubt reuniting is cool, but if the Sublime one is true I hope they at least don't keep the same band name. Don't get me wrong, they had a brilliant rhythm section but overall Sublime WAS Bradley. It'd kinda be blasphemy if they continued without his control.

Awsome! The best video you've made! Ok that's going a bit too far but my fav genres are punk and ska and melodic hardore so yeah, this video was the one I could really relate to.
I wonder if you'll mention Streetlight Manifesto in your later videos. I mean they are one of the best (if not THE best) skapunk bands of the new millenium.
Oh and some tirvia for those who don't know them: Some of the band members are form older classic punk bands, like NoFx and others.
For those who like skapunk mixed with latin, jazz, swing, folk and many various styles, it's a must have.

Extra points for mentioning Rocket From the Crypt. "On a Rope" is a great song! And yeah, you gotta love NOFX.
Hellcat Records "Give 'em the Boot" compilations have gotta be the best. I noticed vol.2 straight away when you were going through them near the start of the video. (Glad you like Bouncing Souls by the way!)
That Voodoo Glow Skulls song sounds cool. I've been meaning to check those guys out...
And I second what Alucat said. Streetlight Manifesto are one of the best 3rd wave ska bands.

I just have to totally thank you for the rant on the sorry state that is now Epitaph and, specifically, the Pu8nk-O-Rama collections. That, along with the Vans Warped Tour BS, I have to say, was a great contributor to the ending of what me and my friends now refer to as my "Punk Period". And while I still do love the genre and the artists I discovered at the time, I just don't have the stomach or the cash to delve into these shitty compliations and only get three songs I might actually like.
So, yeah... thanks for saying publicly what most of us only say to the few people in our lives who share the same musucal tastes. And, being music geeks as we are, that seems to be few.
