I can certainly resonate with the idea of trying to seek your own island that makes you stand out. I’m roughly the same age as you and I defiantly remember when the nerds/geeks weren’t permitted to listen to certain music cause it doesn’t mesh with our external aesthetic. But a term that really pissed me off and sounded pretentious is Indie Rock or you called it Undeground. These are the type of music snobs that would wear The Smiths, Pixies Tshirts and claim that Nirvana was overrated. I remember getting ridiculed just for wearing a Social Distortion shirt. Some of these elitists would even accuse me of "trying to hard" to fit in. But anyway, highschool was a bittersweet era for me.
I’m hoping that one day 4th wave ska will crash on the music scene again. It’s a genre thats so endearing, euphoric and just fun to listen to. I was depressed to see this type of music fizzle out by 2000. In fact, my friends band changed their style to conform to what other hipsters were into. Enter, the 60s garage rock revival of the 00s. White Stripes, Strokes, Hives, and Jet. So then, my friends retired the horn section and replaced it with a pseudo Kinks. That to me was jeopardizing their creative integrity cause their music echoed bands like English Beat, Madness and Bosstones. Ok back on topic.
I’m very familiar with the bands you listed and again I’m very appreciative that a music guy such as yourself was chosen to be apart of Dougs site. I work in the music industry as a graphic designer so I’m constantly venturing out to clubs and bars seeking talent that deserves exposure. To be sincere, this decade hasn’t really impressed me. Most of these indie bands such as Bloc Party and TV on the Radio are flash in the pan blog bands that will be long forgotten. But after 16 years, I still proudly admit of being a Green Day and Weezer fan =)

Hehe, one of my best friends is EXACTLY like that:D But hey, i cant blame him: hes considerably older than me and maybe i would be the same if i had grown up with late 80s rock.
The music nerds i really hate are the-"you can't like this band, if you like that one, which is slightly more mainstream!"-kinda idiots (a phrase i heard a lot from punkrock-guys when talking about the offspring or greenday, which were great back then!)
And BRs "Recipe for Hate" is indeed an awesome album! i wonder why you hadnt already covered it in the last episode...but then again i didnt hear this classic until a few years ago so you're forgiven:P

Oh, and one thought about the whole ska-punk-genre: i like it but always considered it as "party-only"- stuff...while drivin' to some club/pub/concert occasionally i'm still gonna pop in one of my faves of the genre:
-catch 22 - keasby nights
-mighty bosstones - lets face it
-less than jake - hello rockview
and everyone will love it...but to me this was never the kind of music i would listen to at home (not that that's a bad thing it's just a completely different way of experiencing music).

I can definitely relate to the music choices. Though i went to high school roughly 7 to 8 years after the release of most of the music in this video, i still identified with them, and were a big part of my bus trip to and from school every day. Older music just seems to be able to grab you more, and have more feeling, as well as more of a message, than most modern stuff we here today. Awesome work Paw.

It's really interesting to have a sneak peek at someone's musical evolution. I myself have evolved in a weird backwards way... so I suppose you can say that i've devolved :P
When I was a kid I listened to W.A.S.P, Judas Priest and other rock/hard rock acts of the time, as I grew up my musical interest picked up heavier and heavier stuff and in the 90's I was listening to stuff like In Flames, Children of Bodom, Megadeth and all the 90's heavy metal bands and at some point I was listening to grindcore.
It all collapsed when I got introduced to Deep Purple, Frank Zappa and King Crimson. The music just drew me in and showed me a whole new level of musical skill and songwriting that I got into more of the old-school rock/hard-rock/heavy rock etc. bands and I've been on that track ever since. Not that I don't listen to heavy metal to this day, I do, but I just love the more technical and interesting stuff, metal tends to get tiring and even if there is a nice drive and energy to the music it just doesn't make you wanna swing and jam with the music.
Keep on rockin' in the free world.

01.27.2009 - 05:41 | spoco2I'm just loving this series... nicely made, you've got a great personality... and it's an interesting musical journey.
I hope you've got ideas for what to do after your personal music journey as I'll watch whatever they may be.

Surprised that you didn't have They Might Be Giants in there too.

Really nice. Personally... I don't quite like SKA (or ska, whatever). Never liked to be honest... Don't know why really. Always seemed to me too cheerful with all the sax and stuff. About punk - This video made notice that the nowadays "punk" (which i wouldn't really call punk) is kinda like SKA. I still prefer the old one. :)
Keep makin' them vids, Paw!

I had hit a bit of a hard rock/metal slant around senior year (four hundred years ago in 98). Odd that my god was ozzy at that point in my life and now I could care less what he does. I like the modern rock alternative bands at the time (99.1 whfs Dc for those who know exactly what I am talking about) that seemed really awesome and now I can't remember half their names due to them getting sent into oblivion during the whole rap-rock thing to come round the turn of the century. Still good to hear other people talk about less than jake. I had this friend who was in to them at the time and it brings up amusing stories in my mind to say the least. Good ep.

Do you think that doing somthing to impress people is any worse than not doing somthing because of what people might think of you? i sure dont. i wear alot band/tour tee's alot cos there unique and when i see another guy or girl wearing one of a band i like im like yeahhhh =D so screw it. Life is too short to care if someone thinks im striving for attention. and you should'nt care either.

02.03.2009 - 07:20 | thrashbrownsCool video, man. It's always interesting to see how people evolve over time. Although, I really haven't evolved at all. I loved metal in high school. I still love metal.
P.S. Last record that blew my mind: Ashes of the Wake by Lamb of God...

04.09.2009 - 12:01 | poppisHahahahaaa. The Bloodhound Gang. The band that saved me from horrible mainstream pop music like the Backstreet Boys and other familiar shitness at the begin of my highschool because I wanted to be popular...
They some how got me hooked on rock music and that is where I have been staying since the "Fire Water Burn" single even though I wouldn't even call them a rock band, but who really cares.
And because of this I didn't become a popular kid in my highschool and I glad that didn't happen to me. :D
Anyways, I wanted to say that this series rock. It's very interesting and has this fresh feeling that will keep me coming back for more. Keep up the awesome work.

This was a real good review. I myself actually went backwards instead of your progression. I started out on this stuff but I dropped it for the older material. I became a Led Head like my Dad and joined the KISS Army and the rest was history. Though if you have anyone to blame, blame Zappa around my Sophomore year in high school. I'd always listened and liked the old stuff but now nothing else does it for me at all.
I'm definitely looking forward to the next one, as always.
Rock on, Pawdugan! 8);D
Are those tattoos? Awesome ones at that. 8)
