Written by Paw Friday, 23 January 2009 01:32
The second episode, leading out of childhood and into the first few years of high school (1993-1996). From the Grunge scene of the early 90s, into Primus, and into pop. Witness the continuing evolution of music.

Thank you for this videoblog. Makes me think about the old days when life was much more easier and the biggest problem was to find new bands nobody ever heard of.

Grung wasn't actually your thing, eh? Sounds like you got more and more into softer stuff as time went on. Then again, I guess it was a little too early for power metal (DragonForce, Nghtwish, etc), so I guess you couldn't find much of the melodic stuff without leaving the mainstream. Interesting.
By the way, four guitars in that band? Crazy. I guess it could work, given the lyrics.

Being a teenager in the 90s was definatly a fun experience. As a music buff myself, I was exposed to an array of different genres. The early 90s gave us grunge and alternative. The late 90s gave us ska, elecronica, and even SWING! Yeah, remember when the 40s trend came back breifly? I remember in high school kids would actually wear zoot suites. By the way, I was a Weezer kid cause that band fucking rocks! =W=

It used to be simple: comedic reviews of movies. Shit I can ignore Linkara to a certain extent because even though his subject matter is ridiculous in my opinion (video reviews of still pictures) his daffy duck like talking pattern still is pretty comedic. But now we're dealing with this music reviews? Seriously, is this like the E! Entertainment channel or what?

I really enjoyed watching this! Keep it up, man.
This video made me remember that kids here, in school, listen to stuff just because it's "cool". To be exact, they listen to stuff which aired on MTV, and then think it's cool. Makes me chuckle looking at them kids dressing up with way too big clothes and claiming they're rappers.

You know, the comedic reviews about movies have not been affected whatsoever with the new videos. There is just more videos in all upcoming for a bigger variety of person. So if you like it simple, keep it simple for you and just watch the reviews on movies. If you feel obliged to watch all videos no matter what because you ''HAVE'' too, then it's time to get outside kid. So please, keep those comments to yourself.

Well, being a bit younger than most video-reviewers, the early 90s were to me as the 80s to them. I was still to young to concern myself with such "problems" as something being mainstream or not when my older brother got me into grunge.
Ps. You got balls to go "bleh" on Pearl Jam.
I'll say! They're one of my favorites still to this day and an awesome live experience!
But kudos for including Beck, he was one of my first non-mainstream experiences eventually leading me to artists such as Eels or Frank Black.

01.22.2009 - 20:39 | TrangleCYes, i remember the time when liking Nirvana was mandatory. Exactly for that reason i never did. I'm the oposite of Paw in that regard. While he tried to like something he didn't like for the sake of being like the others, i might actually have liked grunge, but didn't allow myself, because i didn't want to be like everybody else.

Ah High School. Sadly I was more of a Linkin Park kid. I wasn't emo, I just didn't know any better. By the end of my high school days I was getting into the metal scene as a big System of a Down fan, but perhaps I jumped on that band wagon a little too late. I'm kinda shocked at all the variations of music you can get into. I'm such a music n00b. :'(
Great video Paw. I am now informed.

I like most everything you like, but i was actually shocked to see your reaction to Foo Fighters! Their early albums were more grunge....ish? Grungy? I'll go with grungy. But as time has gone on they've shown themselves to be adaptable, and released what I would call some of my favorite songs of all time.
Also screw iceteawithlemon, you rock, Linkara rocks, and he can go drink himself.

@iceteawithlemon:
I don't see a problem here. In fact, I like this site mostly because it has so many entertaining people in it. Instead of waiting two weeks for one guy to make a review, I can come to this site twice a day and there are typically new videos every time.
And best of all, it's not like you have to watch the videos of people that you're not interested in. Me? I like this guy. And seemingly so do a lot of other people.

I'm much more of a 60's and 70's child. I'm 19 now, but I grew up with the likes of King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Hendrix, Zeppelin, and of course, Zappa! ...but this last summer I picked up my balls from the ground and did something truly astounding. I bought Nirvana's Nevermind.
Holy Fuck! Could there ever be a better album, or band?
Surprisingly, I've come to love Nirvana more than almost every other band I've been into since the 8th grade. I like some of the other grunge stuff like Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains, but Nirvana had something different. Soul.
Yeah, and they get a lot of flak, mostly because they're misunderstood. Like, most people call them emo and self hating/angst rideen. Not true. Nirvana was about life - humor, thought, vitality. Nevermind is incredibly uplifting melodically, and all of their lyrics in all their albums were meant to be clever and well, funny, but never directly espouse a rigid concept like, say, suicide. If they seemed nihilistic, then they were meant to be that way for ironic purposes. But to cut to the crap, I bought all of their albums, and well, they just fucking rock. The songs are extremely written, more so than a lot of bands, even than say Zeppelin, the flow of the albums are perfect - progressing to a final point and having a sense of the meaning of each song in relation to adjacent tracks, and to top it off they could balanced being heavy, being accessible, and being smart. I've listened to Incesticide in 2008 more than any other album in my collection.
Anywhoo, this post has gone on way too long. For anyone who likes grunge or "alternative" music (the real kind, not the shit they play non stop on fm radio since the 90s), I recommend two bands: King Crimson and Frank Zappa or the Mothers of Invention. Google those names and you're brains will be blown out.

great vid. You definitly have good taste. But you forgot to mention two monuments of this time : Sonic Youth and Rage against the machine. I know you cant talk about ALL the bands. But these two completely reinvented the sound of rock/grunge at the time, and should have been in your vid... keep up the good work.

Holy cow, someone else remembers "Your Woman"?! :o
That's totally another one of those songs that sums up my childhood years (yeah, I was a young 'un in the 90's). I always thought those opening notes sounded like Darth Vader's theme music. :P
Anyways, I'm loving these videos more and more and you're quickly becoming one of my favorite people on the site so I hope to god that you become a regular contributer here.
Keep up the awesome work, Paw! ;D

I like grunge. There I said it. My tastes have broadened to a point where my iPod is a mess if you try to sort by genera, but I still like Nirvana after all these years.
What broke me from my harder grunge phase was music like Beck, Smash Mouth, Everclear and Blues Traveler. And while I never left Nirvana behind completely, I did stop wearing flannel at some point.
I think the best thing my friends ever did as far as my music tastes go was turn me on to Weird Al Yankovic. Stay with me here. Weird Al is a big part of why I have as eclectic a taste as I do. He became my gateway to some of my favorite music and bands.

Compared to the 80's, almost all music from the 90's was just garbage. I hated it back then and I still do.

We still have at least three record and tape traders within a 30 mile radius of where I am. I would say although I love nirvana, Alice in Chains will always be the better band. All the songs work regardless of what album their on and Jar of Flies is definably an important album. They really never fit the standard Grunge classification though as many of the hardcore metal heads that I know still give it up for AIC (keep in mind some of these people didn't really get into alternative either). Even though they are still technically around the the staley, cantrell, kinney, starr/inez combination really had something that the bands of that same era never had. Sadly those times are gone and now it's about fake yelling and what not in (Rock). So to say I am digging this series. Keep it up. And yes that's beck doing the shatner rocketman thing years before stewie did it (both gags are still funny as hell though). And pearl jam is overrated. (think I got enough words here?)

Grunge was never my thing either. I remember when I was in the first grade, and the grunge songs were played on the radio when I was on the bus. I remember that song, Black Hole Sun, which was a popular hit. But it terrified me because it had a strange, and disgusting guitar tone that sounded like a mutated organ, whilst the video had several people smiling like they were brainwashed.
BTW, the word "Alternative" means other
You are an interesting person.
