I've actually seen this! It's not my favorite ever, but it's not terrible. And I always love Rowan Atkinson.
And now Richard Curtis is writing for Stephen Spielberg. Look how far he's come-- or hasn't, depending on how you see it.
Oh, that's right. This movie was written by Academy Award nominee writer-director Richard Curtis. Love Actually. Blackadder. Etc. Bernard and the Genie is his first movie. Why did you not mention that Lupa?

12.16.2012 - 23:00 | BloodrealmThis looks like it could be adapted into a great TV show... provided they get the right writer(s) and director(s) and don't screw it all up like everyone does these days.
Ah, who am I kidding? There'd be ten times as much depression in it as this already has... and one of them would have a substance abuse problem... and mental health issues... and a bitchy wife/girlfriend/ex... and be cheating on someone...

Ok, I have got to see this movie now.
Although the killing of children is somewhat of a concern, why did the girl wish to blow up?
Also, the toaster wouldn't work without an electrical socket, all the future stuff is just junk, a gold bar would have been a better option.
But yeah, looks like a great movie.

I actually remember watching this the Christmas it was broadcast, although only just about, I would have been 7.
All I could recall about it before today was that Lenny Henry played the Genie and the whole segment with the children at the grotto getting everything they wanted (particularly the boy asking and getting to be Gary Lineker, which even then struck me as kind of creepy).
Great nostalgia trip, nice going Lupa.

I can remember having this as a child. My parents recorded it off of the TV, but still we all as a family loved watching this (me, especially) and a think a part of me just exploded in delight at having a TGWTG contributor review it. I honestly thought it had completely disappeared without a trace with no memory remaining in anyone's head

and hat's off for using a decent-looking turtle suit for a small cameo. if i'd known going in that this movie included five seconds of live-action Leo, i'd have expected it to provide cannon fodder, not genuine, warm, nostalgic awesomeness!
c'mon; he's obviously still a genie, just that due to all the wibbley wobbley the wizard now thinks his spell failed.
he should have just wished him time-travel powers instead, since apparently genies don't have that by default in this movie. makes sense really, since the ability to travel through time at will kinda leaves the curse without a down side.

12.17.2012 - 13:24 | Third3yeOh poor diluted possibly-hoping-for-a- porn-spinoff Lupa :> Bromance is sometimes the most purest of non-gay affection. I think this movie shows this perfectly, dispensing with macho culture in one fell swoop. All in all I hope this comes out on DVD to ^^ I wanna see the rest of the scenes with Rowan Atkinson in it -- after all; it's not Christmas without Ebenizer Blackadder :P

12.17.2012 - 14:50 | JimmyBBernard and the Genie isn't really a kids movie, it's a 'family' movie. It was first shown on the BBC about 8pm in November 1991. A bit early for Christmas and a bit late in the evening for a kids film. If it was aimed at a young audience, it would have been on earlier than that timeslot.
Also, the BBC is publicly funded, they don't actually get paid for all that product placement, which is why it doesn't linger on it too much. All the adverts in Piccadilly Circus are there anyway, the scene was more to show the Genie how much times had changed (electronic billboards) than to sell products. It's like setting the scene in Times Square in New York.

12.17.2012 - 19:56 | AutisticwriterI remembered Kazaam and i liked it as a kid, ever since the Nostalgia Critic (May he rest within the plot) reviewed the movie, i looked back on it and started dislike it. This movie is no different and this is the first time i am hearing of it. I can agree with you on one thing Lupa, i also had horrible taste in movies. I never disliked any cartoons when i was a kid. Well, i did hate Super Mario Brothers movie.
8:40 - Um yes you can, you never said anything about the rules of wishes so on the words of Nelson HA HA
13:43 - I think they were dirty cops, i don't know but it makes more sense than anything the movie comes up with.
18:03 - Really just Leo, how much money did Eastman and Baird make from this cameo.
20:58 Old Lady thinking "Weirdo"

My word, that was unexpected. Movie seemed to veer a little too sharply between silly Christmas funtimes and needlessly dark turns, but chemistry between the leads and Rowan Atkinson being GLLLOORRRIOUSLY eeevil sold me. Just... that scene where he appears in Bernads apartment, veiled in shadows. I lost it. I just lost it and couldn't stop laughing because he's so EEEEVIL. Shame you couldn't show more of the elevatorman though, he looks like a really awesome character as well.
So- a strange movie, but not a bad one by any means. And hey- Leonardo for Christmas. Barring any troubling existential questions, that right there is pretty much the second best Christmas gift ever.
Because best Christmas gift would be Michaelangelo.

12.18.2012 - 18:33 | impfireballExplanation: Time isn't linear. Traveling back in time turns you over to another universe where no event after the 'past' has occured yet. No more paradoxes. Merry christmas!
1:53- …MERRY CHRISTMAS, EVERYONE! And you thought The Penguin spitting black spit was disturbing.
4:08- This is like Scrooge if he were around in modern times.
12:50- He IS Scrooge if he were around in modern times.
6:53- Just like the Fairly Odd Parents, except the serve for the all eternity thing.
Damn, Alan Cumming and the genie are more depressed than me.
13:57- Damn, this is getting too dark. I’m also sharing the same expression as you , Alison.
18:17- And this came out the same Christmas I got TMNT2 on VHS. If this happened to me at the time, I would have fainted with excitement.
18:38- DAMN IT, MOVIE, STOP GETTING SO F**KIN’ DARK! (Sorry, Connecticut.)
21:53- The movie pulled a Metal Gear Solid 3 on us, but it doesn’t stop it from being a joy to watch. This movie SHOULD have a DVD and Blu-ray release.
