I really need to see the first film (the remake) sometime so I won’t be left in the dust from classic ’80s cinema.

I think the reason why they made a sequel is because the original film had 2 sequels. At least in times like now, they knew when to stop.

3:41- At least these people aren’t dressed like teddy bears.

4:17- So THIS is where Wayne Szalinski got the idea for his gadget helmet. …If no one got that joke, then I am old.

6:57- The Back to the Future trilogy is one of my favorite film series, and I DO agree that this IS sad.

9:37- Or Cujo if he was a poorly made puppet.

10:45- Quick! Someone ring the Virgin Alarm, for both of them!

11:39- At least this acting’s more convincing than Tommy Wiesau.

    11:52- DUN, DUN, DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU UN!!!!!!!!!!!!

14:03- The fly creature form in this movie looks like Godzilla if he was teleported with year-old spinach. Maybe this is what Biollante was ORIGINALLY going to look like

15:11- I was also shocked by this this past week when I saw a copy of it at the local dollar store. This film looks like one that you immediately forget minutes after seeing it.

15:39- ALRIGHT! Can’t wait to see how terrible the idea of kangaroo werewolves are in this movie. Also, it’s rated PG-13. That’s a sign that they’re once again not trying.

    Thank you.

    3:41- ha, good callback.

14:03 Wow a Biollante referince I didn't think many people remembered that one!

15:39-yes I can't wait on that one either!

Nice Godzilla reference, glad that someone remembers that awesome movie

Hi Speedy Eric. "Honey, I shrunk the Kids"...and yeah, I'm old too, my friend. Peace.

I saw this awful film some time ago,
'The Fly' was good. This aint, and... I confess,
I like, when in the video, you show,
The boredom that you felt as it progressed.

Damn, I haven't fully seen the first movie yet (I only got to the part where he arm wresles the guy for the blond chick and violently snaps the man's wrist and I had to shut it off because it made me cringe)and now my movie watching senses are going to be all topsy turvey! XD

    Shame I never heeded Lupa's warning :(
But it definitely made me want to find the first movie again, thanks Lupa, and this time I will avert my eyes during the arm wrestling scene.

Can you believe the only disgusting scene anyone I know remembers from that movie is when Jeff Goldblum is eating powdered donuts as a fly creature?

    Seriously, that arm wrestling scene....*cringes*

Also I will pick "Flies are geniuses" for the less idiotic please :D

As *terrible* as this film is, props to Christopher Young's excellent score.

Seriously, a TWO-DISC SPECIAL EDITION DVD for this piece of shit?! And there's still no anamorphic special edition of, say, True Lies?

Whoa, Lupa's reviewing a movie I've actually seen; I think that's the first time that's happened. The same is true for several of the other TGWTG folks; I think I've seen one of the films' Oancitizen has reviewed, and not of The Cinema Snob's. I do remember liking this; but then, I only saw it when it first came out on video, and I was around twelve or thirteen then and liked a lot of shit.

I know "flippy' animatronics werent the best, but i still felt bad seeing flippy all messed up and junk T-T. Youre a meanie for laughing at him Lupa lol :P. Anyways, this was a very unnecessary sequel, which just goes to show how Hollywood will milk the shit outta any franchise that made a lot of money at the box office with its first movie, regardless of if a sequel makes sense or not *COUGH* HANGOVER PART 2 *COUGH*.

I thought this fly looked like a gremlin, what with the teeth and red eyes.

Also, this might be one of the few sequels that looks MORE dated than its predecessor. Cronenberg's The Fly looks like a typical mid-80's genre film, but The Fly II -- despite coming out three years later -- has this weird, late-70's vibe to the cinematography and settings (reminding me of another unfortunate monster movie, John Frankenheimer's hilarious 1979 flick Prophecy). I can't adequately explain it, but it just seems a lot more 1979 than 1989.

I'll admit that I like this movie in a way different level that I liked the original (which I just love)...

It's dumb but I liked when it got gory and I actually liked the monster.

Weird, just a couple of hours ago I happened to see a copy of this movie in the discount rack at the Dollar General store. I didn't get it though, because it wasn't the two-disc collector's edition. ...Oh, and also because it's a horrible, crappy movie.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the main reason you decided to review this movie is so you'd have an excuse to show off those groovy shades. Just don't be surprised if they wind up inspiring slash fic of you & Dr. Insano.
  • DavidB1111
Um, Slash fic is between people of the same sex. So, no one can write slash fic of Obscura Lupa and Dr. Insano.

Unless it's Rule 63 Insano. Where he would be a woman.

Sorry if I come across as annoying, but yeah, there's a difference between Slash fic, and normal pairing fanfiction. I should know. I've written a good 200+ stories...over 10 years.

That said, I do remember watching this movie a long long time ago. And even back then, I knew it was bad. Nice to see your review of this, Lupa.

The fly gods must be crazy aliens!

Geena Davis: Be afraid... be very afraid
Goldblum: NO... be UNafraid... be very very UNafraid!!!!

Dude I can totally relate to that, It freaked me the hell out too when they turned the poor monkey inside out in the first movie. This movie series is not for the faint of heart.

I liked this film, mostly because I love transformation fiction. Hated the character of Seth in the first one, glad his son turned out to be a good guy.

Also, I don't see what's so funny about the mutated dog.

Now, for horror sequels.....House IV, perhaps, hmm?
  • AncientRelic  - Wow!
    It's an Oompa Lupa!

Sorry, but as soon as I saw the glasses that's the first thought that went in my head.

I feel that many people dismiss the original to easily just because of how popular the remake is. But the original is still pretty awesome.

To be fair the science of first one doesn't make a lick of sense either: I mean is there any reason or way a transportation device would splice dna? An incomplete, malformed, or physically fused to the pod/fly/whatever transportation makes a certain amount of sense but genetic splicing not so much. Even if it did splice the dna of everything in the pod wouldn't every transport fail horribly since every living subject would get spliced with the ambient microbes inside of and on them?

The difference is the first movie gave a us compelling human drama with characters we actually cared about. We could overlook the questionable science because there was a good story being told, where as the sequel has nothing of the sort so its flimsy plot conceits just stick in your craw because they have no payoff and hence no reason to accept them.
  • dennett316
    avatar
He kind of explained it, the computer got confused when it encountered two unique genetic patterns and decided to integrate the Fly DNA into Brundle's genetic make up. The teleporter breaks you down and re-integrates you into the other pod, so it makes sense that kind of gene splicing could occur as he obviously hadn't allowed for it or considered it when creating the program.

As for the microbes, one can only assume there's some sort of filter which stops that becoming an issue due to their more basic nature.
  • TerminalSanity
    avatar
Dude don't try to explain or justify sci-fi science, its a losing battle. If the story is good enough you'll just roll with it no matter how ludicrous the concepts within are.

And really if computer was able not only to differentiate between Brundle's genetic make up and microbes but to recreate those same microbes after reintegration(you really do need them for proper digestion) its stands to reason it would be to do the same for a fly especially since if anything it would be even harder for the computer to distinguish between Brundle and the microbes within him.
  • NoelVeiga  - I kinda want this to be a PSA for all the TGWTG ca
...Can we not do the "laugh at something the movie didn't intend us to laugh at" bit again? It's just... I get that's the reaction those things tend to cause, but it's a bit lazy and childish and, guys, no offense, but it's hard to laugh on camera and pull it off, and even harder to make it be funny to watch.

I don't want to seem harsh or cause a stir, though, I like the shows and the site and all that stuff, it's just this one pet peeve that annoys me whenever anybody does it, be it Lupa, Film Brain, Linkara or Doug.

The fly 2 sucks. I saw it in the theater when it first came out, and it was just as bad then. Fucking movie is worse than Lawnmower Man 2. Good review though.
  • Jezzy54

Of course he has super-strength. Seth Brundle was super-strong in the first movie. Have you forgotten that he broke a tough guy's arm open in an arm wrestling match?
  • Zydrate
    avatar
He didn't have super strength. He was able to break that guys arm open by secreting acid from his finger tips, which dissolved the bone in his arm.
  • Jezzy54
    avatar
That makes no sense. How the hell does a forearm bone dissolve under the skin from getting acid on the hand? Do a search on YouTube for a video titled "Bone snap : THE FLY" (because my direct links keep getting screwed up). It's not the best quality video, but it shows what I'm talking about.

At 0:19 in the video, Brundle's hand is clearly not on the spot where the arm breaks. There's no sign of severe acid burns, it's broken. The guy's hand looks a little raw at 0:28, maybe from the acid, but he hasn't been badly wounded where it made contact with his skin. If the acid did leak down to the bone, half his forearm would have melted off.
  • DarkAlex1978  - Ehm....

The "Floppy Puppet" is very poorly made but IMHO is not enough to make the "put out of misery" scene so funny.
And for why they keep Floppy in the hole... probably because they want to see how long he can live: scientists can be very assholes.
  • EnakX
Regarding some of the points you raised:

    1. The "cure" for the fly mutation was the same in the first one (i.e. DNA switching)

    2. Seth Brundle got super strength from his mutation, too

    3. The fly monster could have teeth because it is a random combination of fly and human, just like Seth was

    4. The dog is NOT funny

All in all, while it doesn't hold up to the first one on any level, The Fly II has its good points.
  • BooRat
    avatar
    I totally agree with you!
  • dennett316
    avatar
About the dog thing....the situation wasn't funny, but the awful puppet was.
And while I enjoyed the movie on a Z-grade monster movie level, it takes too long to get to that part, Eric Stoltz is no Jeff Goldblum in terms of charisma or screen presence and as a follow up to that awesome remake, it fails in every way.

The remake took a schlocky premise and made it into something more, this one took the same premise and made it dull until the third act.
  • Jezzy54
    avatar
But Brundle was losing his mind, so what he hoped would cure him wouldn't necessarily work.

Ok, this review I didn't care for as I liked this sequal. It was good for what it was and it was close to the sequal the origional was. There was Fly 2 to the old Vincent Price movie about the origional Fly guy's son taking over his father's work and getting turned into a fly monster and it had the happy ending as well.
Also flys do go threw a metamorphic phase from maggot to adulthood. The hightened intelogince was from the highten nurve function and the fact he doesn't sleep and his mind holds deat like a freaking comuter. Aging quickly from the fly only living a short while thing. Basically this movie was playing off old comicbook rules.
Also the Fly concept was based off a short story tht was published in an old issue of Playboy. I think it's even getting a reboot at some point in the future.
I just can't like this review it put to much hate at this movie that I never got from any of the others and this movie is a hell of a lot better than that rapping ninja guy!

No-one else cares about any sequel to either version of "The Fly". What's important is that this one fails as a sequel to the remake.

The Fly 2, i remember seeing this, i thought that it was quite good at the time, but the original is still better, although it´s not the worst sequel out there.

That prize has to go to Alone in the dark, that second movie was just terrible.
