Uh... why is this listed as an Oancitizen episode? Yeah he helped write it but this specalizes in JO's field, she editted it and it's on her blip page. This is her special crossover ep, not Oan's. That's not to say I disliked this episode: I really enjoyed it from Oan's hole in space time, thinking that anime was just juvinelle cartoons and then being baffled at what he was seeing, the "ew" brought back for the borther sister relationship, realikzing what all the roses symbolized in the series, JO pointing out why ther was a big phallic alligator moment in the middle of what was happening, Oan giving his own interrpetion for Mari and Utena's relationship and hten being surpirsed at there being more and being attacked by bronies at the end. All really great stuff... just make sure it's put in the right place and don't give credit to the wrong person.

You know what happens when you assume: I actually requested it be put here. The style is WAAAAAAY closer to Oan's than mine for reviews, it uses his intro and inside jokes, etc. So yeah.
  • Neo Ultra Mike
Oh sorry I just saw it on your blip page and you pointed out you were working on a crossover so it really did seem like your special. But if that's what you want then that's fine I just thought it was weird he was getting top billing. Besides technically Oan is realeasing his own video today anyway and usually you have one person release per day and thus the crossover would usually be classifed by the other person's anyway. Still though if that's what you want then I can't complain just asking why it was listed as his really.

can you tell me the name of the song when sionji and utena fight? i cant get it out of my head!

They fight three times -- the songs are, respectively, "What Where Who Which," "Paleozoic Within the Body," and "Virtual Star Embryology."

*smacks forehead* Of course you mean the one from the MOVIE soundtrack, not the SERIES.

I don't know the song titles there, but here's a listing of every track on the movie soundtrack album:

    Maybe that'll help?

JesuOtaku: So that's the best review I could give of this film. Kyle, what are your thoughts?
    Oancitizen: Piss.
JesuOtaku: Ok, thank you very much!

    God, this review was glorious!

The first thing I should mention is that Right Stuf/Nozomi is legally streaming Utena on Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=6TQFlVcPyU

While I already had a great talk with JO about this yesterday on twitter, I should point out one thing that I did like about the movie. In the tv series the characters are all basically bisexual (well Akio would have sex with a Radiator), which dilutes the whole idea of Utena being a prince. In the movie this is emphasized more by portraying both Anthy and Utena as lesbians.

I also love the ending, the car scene is utterly unique, and beautifully animated. From the anime I have seen only FMA Brotherhood, Giant Robo, and G Gundam rival the Utena movie when it comes to endings.

Sadly I may miss the next review (at least watch it in a timely manner) because I will being going back to Phoenix for a wedding, and be gone for a week.

I am JO on that part where the Brother has the razor to his sister's throat in the bathtub-NEXT SCENE PLZ! D: D: D:

I have heard by word of mouth about this anime but I had never seen before myself, thanks for this review, it makes me want to find the movie on Youtube now.

    Hopefully with english subtitles.

I love the part at the end where Oan is screaming "What?!?!" while JO is just having so much fun teasing him about the race car/lesbian ending. XD

Oh noes! Who will save Oancitizen from the bronies now? :(

Great review. I mentioned over on Blip.tv that I haven't watched this in years since I only have tape. Well I mentioned that I pre ordered for the ring third collection with it so I may get around re watching. I sorta forgotten how bat crazy this movie is. The whole car was WTF? Though the ending was happier then the TV but I have heard and remember the manga ending being the better of the three. I could be wrong as I haven't read it in years.

by the way lesbian part of Utena was underlined in TV show where in this movie it's right out there.

Well done JO, you managed to quote Film Brain while channeling Ed from Cowboy Bebop at the same time. Also, I love how Oan referenced The Raven and Birdemic in the same episode, that is just about the very definition of eclectic. Great job all around, I loved this.

You two are a great team. I hope this isn't the only time you two will do a review together. Maybe next time you could watch the sort of Movie that Oancitizen would usually review together. Just a thought.
  • ConanSan
The "Naked Cars" scene is, more or less, the reversing of the dynamic between Utena and Anthy, Utena is now the weapon and instead of it being a sword, representing dominance over the person the sword is extracted from, she is a car which symbolises she is working with Anthy willingly out of choice rather than duty as the rose bride.

The way I choose to view the whole mess is that the school is a form of Instrumentality (If not a facet of THE Instrumentality from Eva) and in the series Utena left and in the film everyone else (the focus being Anthy) did so or otherwise became an Agent of the Instrumentality (Ne; Matrix) to prevent anyone leaving (Ne; Shiori, Akiho, the black cars).

The fact that Adolescence is often jokely called "The End of Utena" helps me do so.

Good review however one thing that bugged me and made me not believe this crossover

I don't see Kyle as being the kind of guy that doesn't except Anime as "art"

He's reviewed movies before that have digital affects, stop motion, and other variations and really he doesn't seem like one of those snobs that dis something just because it's cartoon.

Kind of like you and what you have made Hope, but every time I see you, you have to be the one girl that says "Japan is not all tentacle porn and anime can be art!"
  • Gethenian
    avatar
"I don't see Kyle as being the kind of guy that doesn't except Anime as "art" "

Incorrect. Neither Kyle nor I really "get" anime at all. We were just talking about this today and we agree -- we think it looks ridiculous and is often just impenetrably confusing. It's not an artistic style either of us finds especially attractive, ESPECIALLY with the Willie Wonka Candy Dye hairstyles. Kyle doesn't diss cartoons really -- he likes a lot of cartoons -- but ANIME in particular is not something he really cares for.

So.... yeah, believe it, he's in character but this is a pretty fair representation of what Kyle really thinks of anime and of this movie.
  • Flaregun  - Reply to Gethenian
    avatar
Yeah, but I still kind of see ArtticWitchica's point; this review has Kyle pretty much flat-out stating that since this is a cartoon it must be intended solely for children, and heavily implying that it therefore cannot possibly have anymore depth or insight than a Scooby Doo episode, because *all* cartoons are as vapid & insipid as Scooby Doo. It's just wildly out of character for him to so broadly dismiss not just the whole field of anime, but *all* animation as just mindless entertainment for children.
  • MPSai

It's just a joke, you guys. I think it gave them a hilarious dynamic to play off of.

Anime isn't an artistic style, that's like claiming that all american animation should look like the Looney Tunes. The vast majority of anime characters have natural hair colors.
  • Vismutti
    avatar
You've been watching the wrong kind of anime, I think. Have you seen Satoshi Kon's work? Seriously, check it out. It's mostly movies too so it doesn't take long to watch - unlike TV series. And they don't have weird haircolours either, or massive eyes.

Everybody who thinks anime can't be taken seriously needs to see Satoshi Kon's stuff.
  • gehringer
Serial Experiments Lain is another anime that proves anime can be taken seriously.

Not too long, either, just 13 half-hour episodes.

It's weird, basically a Cyberpunk Alice in Wonderland (inf act "Alice in Cyberland" was it's original title) and has some very interesting philosophical stuff involving the Internet and how the boundaries between it and the real world are thinner then you'd think.

There's also *tons* of obscure Apple Computer shout-outs, enough that if you made a drinking game out of 'spot the Apple reference' you'd likely die of liver failure by the 5th episode.
  • Mia
    avatar
    "we think it looks ridiculous"

But a lot of western cartoons do too :O that's...kind of a weird counter argument. And manga doesn't just consist of one, particular artstyle either. Series like Death Note, Monster, Berserk, Blade of the Immortal and Vagabond are drawn in a more realistic style, and most of the characters in those stories(with a few exceptions)have natural hair colors.
  • Lossthief
    avatar
"ESPECIALLY with the Willie Wonka Candy Dye hairstyles"

While I'm certainly aware a lot of people find this strange, I've just...never really noticed when characters have unnatural hair or eye colors. Maybe it's just because I grew up watching Anime on Toonami and the like, but it's never seemed all that out of place to me. After all, it's animation, things are going to look strange compared to reality.
  • PlayMp1

I've never liked anime at all - however, I completely didn't notice the rainbow hair. It may have something to do with my counter-culture upbringing - after all, my dad kept encouraging me to date girls with blue hair since elementary school...

Either way, I do think Kyle is much softer on anime than in this review. He probably does understand at least a little bit, but even an anime non-fan like me probably knows more simply due to the Internet (and the fact that I haven't stuffed my brain full of how to interpret imagery... I'm a bit too left-brained for that).

Also want to add that My Little Pony friendship isn't all that bad and is kind of tailored for Bronies more than little girls nowadays >> I hated it at first since I;m a girl who hates girly shit, but it grew on me.
  • Gethenian
    avatar
Yes. Yes it is that bad.
  • MetalMike007
No, no it isn't that bad even from a negative perspective. Most fans don't think that it's that "deep," it's just fun, funny, really nice to look at, and really, really cute. Feel free to disagree, it's your opinion, but I have yet to meet someone who HATES the show whose hate doesn't stem more from the fans than the show itself.

*Cue someone saying that this proves MLP fans can't take criticism. I'd still much, much rather watch that than overwrought stuff like this.
  • Vismutti
    avatar
Oh, there are SO much worse series out there. MLP:FiM, even if you don't like it, it's at least not lazy or just plain offensive. The worst you could call it is "nothing special". I've seen baaaad children's TV shows and I've seen BAAAAAD children's shows for girls. MLP:FiM is pure gold compared to those.

I don't think it's the best series EVAH or anything. But it's okay. It's still watchable to me even as an adult; and I'm pretty picky about TV series so I think it says something at least. If you don't like it, I'm not telling you that you should, but seriously, there are objective ways to say it's honestly not nearly the worst thing ever to be made for little girls.

Sorry about the rant but I had to correct the injustice here. :(

I have read that the movie is an allegory for Buddhism. Utena's transformation into a car represents her role as a Boddhisattva, the vehicle (literally) for Anthy escaping the false world of the academy and attaining true consciousness (Nirvana).

I reckon that's no more or less ridiculous than any other interpretation.

This makes me want to watch the series again.

I don't really understand what there is to get and not get about anime. They're cartoons. Some of them are targeted towards kids and some towards adults/mature audiences (no, I'm not just talking about hentai -_-)

You know, I once had an otaku jump down my throat when I referred to anime as 'cartoons'. Literal quote: "That's not a cartoon! It's anime!"

@Kyle: If you ever did want to watch an anime that's more "artistic" I'd recommend "Paprika".

Also, you might be happy to know that they did away with Utena's pink hair for the live action musical. Granted everyone else has funky-colored hair...but....umm....

*points* *waits for you to look away* *runs*
  • Vismutti
    avatar
I completely agree about Paprika. And anything by Satoshi Kon, really.

(I always find it kind of silly when people get offended when anime is called cartoons. Come on, "anime" is just a Japanese word for cartoon. Okay, actually it's just short for "animeeshon" = animation but I digress.)
  • Flaregun

This was a great crossover, but I actually found the ending a bit disturbing. I mean, I know that OanCitizen was written as being an unusually smug, condescending prick here, but did he really deserve to be sent to the *Bronies*? That's dark, man. That's a fate I wouldn't even wish upon The Blockbuster Buster.

As for the ending of the movie itself..., Yeah. Look, I'll admit, I pretty much followed OanCitizen here through the wormhole, anime baffles & frightens me in general. And it doesn't help that I'm going by a very condensed description of what seems to have been a ridiculously intricate, convoluted plot. By the end I was so deep in the WTF hole that I actually missed the whole lesbian thing because I thought the main character had actually *literally* changed her gender by that point. (What?, like that's somehow supposed to be more nonsensical than her turning into the frickin' Batmobile???)
  • MetalMike007
Well, you gotta admit, even if you loathe MLP and "bronies" it's at least comprehensible and not pretentious as all hell...
  • Lossthief
    avatar
C'mon now. We Bronies will treat Kyle perfectly fine.

    avatar
Believe me, I'm an anime fan, I saw the whole Utena TV series... and that didn't help much at all with this one. So it's not just you, it's this movie. (I still love it though. xD)

((Actually I sort of began to get into it later, after reading the manga version and some other people's interpretations etc. But it took time and effort.))
  • Louis Kurihara  - A question
For this review and when you two watched this movie who did the Japanese translation?.
  • JesuOtaku
    avatar
I did. There were subtitles for the movie, but they didn't carry over so well visually from the rip, so I just wrote in my own. They're pretty much the same as the DVD subs, except when I thought I could phrase something better for the clip, because I do know some Japanese and could partly catch what they were saying.
  • EmoNekoChan

Mm, I quite liked the movie myself, it's pretty bonkers but I did enjoy the characters' of Anthy and Utena and their happy ending, however sappy it may be.

I really should watch the show itself but I just can't find it...

Anyway, while I like Kyle I have to say that being left to the bronies is a fitting punshment for one who would continously dismiss the merits of animated storytelling, though I suspect the optinion presented there was more than a little tongue-in-cheek.
  • MetalMike007
Hey, at least MLP has a better grip on storytelling than this.

The bronies got Kyle? Good Lord, they'll tear him to shreds!
  • MetalMike007
I think it would be much funnier if by the end of all that he actually joined in the over-analysis of the show and was somehow convinced that MLP proves that "cartoons" are the deepest form of media or something.

I love the show and all but a lot of *those* people make me want to separate myself from them a bit....
