While I'll miss Classic Who, I'm enjoying Here there Be Dragons. This is a promising new series, Nash! I wonder if you'll show some more films, like Willow, or if you'll just focus on dragon films. Guess I'll have to wait and watch!

I think a certain Austrian warmonger made off with the middle part of you moustache. I'd report him if I were you. It's perfectly within your reich to do so.
... comedic musings on the reviewers facial hair aside, I must say that I rather ejoyed this video. I shall look forward to watching more in the series as and when they become available. All the best with the project.

I remember seeing this on TV once when I was younger. I loved the practical effects and I was curious why we didn't see the main actor in more films like this.
Then I saw Dragonslayer when I was older, still enjoyed the practical effects but agree that the characters were just boring and really in the right hands and with the right actors it would make for an interesting remake.
However, I don't think it would get approval and if it did they'd try to replace all the practical stuff with CGI.
Not a good movie but as far as "dragon movies" go I'd take it over Dungeons and Dragons the movie any day.

12.17.2012 - 23:33 | CursedbythedicegodsGreat new series Nash! I re-visited this one a couple of years ago, and I must say you absolutely nailed it on the head. I was actually MAD at the ending of this film, thinking to myself, "That king is SUCH a douchebag!" Looking forward to seeing what else you have in store for us.

4. The Warrior and the Sorceress
5. The Gor movies
6. Krull
7. Merlin and the Sword

I saw it on Tv on some forgotten limbo called Saturday post-cartoon noon. I liked the story concept even though it was executed pretty "meh" you did have a point about where their thought process was coming from so in a way it seems justifiable.
Also, the original legend which the movie is based off of reminds me of the story of St. George and the dragon. A dragon threatening a kingdom and the young virgin maidens were sacrificed to the dragon to keep it from full outright attacking the kingdom until the king's daughter is one of the sacrifices does he send a knight to slay it and rescue her.
Just like the movie was a allegory for our country's leaders at that time, they used the story as a allegory for St. George slaying the dragon as a symbolic way medivel christianity tried to smite the old paganistic ways. Not to mention, it was a bit more upbeat than what they protrayed in the movie.
Still makes me want to check it out again, its been so long since I have watched it.

I totally agree with you about "Star Wars" basically being a fantasy series... IN SPACE!
I'd like to second the requests of the animated "The Hobbit" (at least the first one--it even has a dragon!), and "Willow", if you're doing general fantasy and not just dragon movies.
Will you be tackling TV series, as well, or just movies? There was a short-lived (6 episodes, I think?) fantasy series called "Wizards and Warriors" I'd love to see you review.
Oh and: I loved the stick-puppets! "I'm Batman! [WHAM!] I'm Batman! [WHAM!] I'm Batman! [WHAM!]".

12.18.2012 - 01:03 | BlackdrazonI'd argue the Harryhausen films were Sword and Sorcery, since that's the name used for the book genre the stories are based on (the ones the preceded the LotR-esque revival started by Terry Brooks et al).
Used to own a tile-based board game based on this movie. Interesting thing, certainly never seen anything else like it. You had to go around amassing a small army's worth of henchmen and equipment while avoiding the King's Men, hoping to not just kill the dragon but kill it first, and certainly not wound it and be forced off, leaving things easier on everyone else. Probably too random for its own good, favours Galen too much where everyone else is equal, but if anyone ever sees it in a garage sale for a quarter, I say give it a shot (and don't play Galen). I always enjoyed it when we brought it out.
EDIT: Finished now. Loved the use of context to discuss the film's strength and failures. I'd like to see more of that, but since you're dealing with such a small era of films, I'm not sure how long you can go before the context is all just explained in previous episodes. Still, good luck! Looking forward to more.

12.18.2012 - 02:00 | yourworstnightmareI hope he does Sword and the Sorcerer at some point (but don't bother with Tales of an Ancient Empire). Of course he might fall into the trap of Thor the Conqueror, but that turkey isn't his style. It should be reviewed by someone more specialized in reviewing turkeys.

Yeah, if all the dragon is doing is flying overhead and periodically making annoying cries then setting out to slay it might be more trouble than it's worth...
Nice paper figure section towards the beginning, though personally I preffer Dragons as more nuanced intelligent creatures, mysterious, wise, not always friendly but not just giant fire-breathing lizards to be slain.
While this movie does seem bleak and mean-spirited, the central message does have at least some worth to it, if you're in the right mindset and can deal with the tone then I think it might be a good watch.

Loved the puppets but it seemed inappropriate to mess about with DoF for that as, lets be fair, that's not how you see a puppet show...
If you ever need something funny [intentionally] to look at, i recommend Korgoth of Barbaria, an in picked up animation trailer that's available for free on youtube. Pity it was before Here Comes Dr Tran showed there was probably profit in internet cartoons...
