    OMG! FIRST! FIRST! FIRST!

YES! FINALLY! Now all my dreams will come to fruition! Seas will turn into marshmallows and the sky will open up and rain money upon the earth!

Right? Right? I mean...I naturally assumed that's what all this "first" hoopla was about.
  • Havic1137
No, but it does spawn a giant, fire-breathing monster known as the Average Internet Forum Poster.

In any case..hooray for four years of SS! Another great video as always, MikeJ.

    j/k! j/k!

Serious comment time: I'm really glad you redid this one, Mike! I watched both of them and you can see how much you've improved since you began reviewing. Love your stuff and I look forward to the next episode! ^^

It's not a bad idea for a movie, its main problem is that the director wasn't Paul Verhoeven. And according to IMDb, it looks like the writer for each Starship Troopers movie is the same guy, but they let him direct the third one, and the second one was directed by the effects guy.
  • RAF
If you think that looked like a vagina you need to see a gynecologist immediately, either for a diagram or to get your girlfriend some serious help. It looks like the mouth of a bug which is vertical.

Why do people always try to make that joke whenever they see a bug’s mouth? They tend to be the same type of people that say blunt rectangular structures look like penises. You think they could disprove one of those theories by looking down their pants.

This is a much worse movie then 2 you should not have had to go through it again you poor man.

Giant robots and pretentious religious symbolism.

    IT'S NEON GENESIS: EVANGELION!
  • thorondragon
technically that would be odd religoius symbolism and giant pilotable synthetic cyborgs, to be more accurate.
  • fanime1  - Good One! XD

Yeah, except NGE looked better and wasn't blatant religious propaganda. This film's symbolism is so obvious that it comes off cheesy, cliche, and awkward. I mean "I got religion bad?" That sums up the religious symbolism and message perfectly; it's trying so hard that it comes off cheesy and hard to take seriously. So yeah, I'd take NGE over this any day.

Anyway Mike, I was wondering how you were going to pull this off. It came out fine, though I was worried in the beginning when u were using a lot of the same jokes from the original review, which was what I was afraid of. But it stopped after a while and I feel like I understood the movie better now than in the original review. Though I was wondering what was up with all the propaganda videos throughout the film. I feel like it was supposed to be a satire, and if it was, does that mean the whole films a satire?

To be fair, the powered armor were from the original book, and one could say that the book popularized the idea of powered armor in particular and giant manned robots in general.
  • theacks1
Further, while Verhoeven is clear the original movie script started as an Aliens parody until someone noted some similarities with the Starship Trooper's book, Aliens itself based the concept of the colonial marines including the powered suit after those in Heinlein's book. In fact, Cameron had all the marine actors read Starship Troopers, something that Verhoeven has never done....

Yeah... those religious overtones don't seem satirical to me... and thus just end up uncomfortable, aggressive propaganda.

I caught the end of this movie once. I'm surprised my eyes didn't fall from my head, considering how hard I rolled them at that over-the-top religious symbolism.
  • webkilla
The religious overtones in the movie are quite intentional. Up until the end of the movie religion is spurned by the federation as something silly - but in the end its shown to have been coopted as just another propaganda tool a la "The federation will defeat the bugs, and god supports this!"

IMO the movie is ok. Certainly better than the second one, and ofc not as good as the first one - but a worthy sequel.

I don't know which one is worse: this flick with all its Bible Belt pandering (who produced this.the Left Behind people?) or the straight-to-video CGI flick that came out last year with all its awful dialogue (and awkward polygonal sex).

Still, Starship Tropper 2 is still way,WAY worse.

Actually I think the religious stuff was clearly satire but I think it being included fucks with the spirit of the original. The original was made in relative peacetime to satirise all war (and thus ironically the source material which was fascist propaganda) and it has a timeless quality because nothing particularly ties it to any particular time or particular army. This film makes it clear that Federation=US Military in a very unsubtle way that somewhat dates it.

Oh and the giant killer robots were how ALL BATTLES in the book were fought. Mobile Infantry had one of those each and were spaced exactly 1 mile apart so their tac nukes wouldn't friendly fire so much. Verhovan's decision to scrap the marauder suits was probably the most controversial bit of the original but it made perfect sense with what he was going for which was something more akin to Warhammer 40k's Imperial Guard where the MI were given shoddy equipment and expected to die in their millions but they tend to prevail due to force of numbers.

Wait, I have the feeling I've said this before.

    What year is it

I wonder if you will be reviewing the fourth movie as well? It's done entirely in CGI ya know.
  • confusiongrows
Well... the religious bits at the end of this film are hilarious. Mike may call it hammy but to be honest it doesn't look anywhere near hammy enough to pull this off!

Quite telling is the performance of Jolene Blalock, who I think is a decent actress but clearly has no ability to just go "fuck it" and chew the scenery when the dialogue is just plain awful. It's a shame she's in this at all, her career never really got going after the dud that was Enterprise, where her character was treated as just the eye candy and badly written for most of its run. Of course we know who to blame for that...

    Fuck you Rick Berman!

The only good thing about this is the song, that is all.

There's forth one of these piles of shit!? The first was shitty parody of the book and the rest were garbage. Please tell me it's based on the actually not bad CGI cartoon.
  • thisithis
The movie is Complete shit. But, the Giant robots where from the Original story in the Starship Troopers books that where Written after WW2. In fact it was all those other video games and movie that took there ideas from the Starship Troopers books. Just to let you know.

    Congrats on 4 years Mike!
Since you've been at this so long, maybe you could address some points you raised in your earlier reviews. I am of course talking about the 80 ft Hive Lemur. I assume you beat it, cos you're still here, but is it dead? Is it just wounded? And if so can it simply repair itself by adding more lemurs?
  • dennett316

Well, you know the horsemeat scandal? That's a cover up, it's actually lemur meat.

So the Marshal was a Genestealer Cultist?

With the religious propaganda and giant robots descending from the skies, are you sure this wasn't a Warhammer 4000 movie?
  • Dresdran
I don't think so. If it were, there would at least be a priest with a chainsaw.

Wait. Macross F reference in my Starship Troopers 3 review (title card)? It's gonna be a good day.

You're moving? Does that mean a different background colour?

Happy 4 years, Mike. Good luck on moving...again.

This new review made a few more things clear, though I still had to look up the movie on Wikipedia just to make sense of a few things.

Military and religious propaganda? I bet the guy who directed this voted for Bush. *gets lynched*

Just kidding, but are we supposed to take it seriously? I wanted that religious woman to get slapped just so she'd shut up. The Federation propaganda also seemed like something out of a video game.

    Also, WHHEEEEEE!!!!

why didn't the blonde bitch just die or better yet nuke the film ....crap
