You know what? I actually kind of liked this movie. I would give it a 7 or 7.5 out of 10.

Wow, you've got some balls to defend this travesty! A least you aren't defending Batman and Robin... or are you?

Batman Forever wasn't too bad, but man oh man I cannot say anothing good about Batman and Robin. But Jim Carry really does play the part of The Riddler quite well.

Also...I kinda think the "Holy rusted metal" joke was pretty clever. I mean, come on, everyone knows that Robin was known more for his "holy ______" catchphrases than anything else. lol

Travesty? No, that's the 4th film. Batman Forever is OK. Jim Carrey is good fun, Val Kilmer is a great Bruce Wayne IMO, but a poor Batman (and not a patch on Michael Keaton overall), and it wasn't full on parody like Batman and Robin was.

Tommy Lee Jones as Two Face is massively wasted, but overall, it was an OK film. I wouldn't rate it as highly as Hardback did, but it's far from a travesty. If you call Bat,man Forever a travesty, what on earth do you call something like Birdemic or After Last Season? You'd have to invent new descriptors.

Australian comic Justin Hamilton said it best. The only good thing about Batman and Robin is that it gave George Clooney the chance to work with Steven Soderbergh, who went on to cast him in Out Of Sight and the Ocean's 11 movie series.

I honestly felt that "Batman Forever" was the best of the pre-Nolan Batmans. I don't hate Tim Burton ("Edward Scissorhands" and "Sweeney Todd" are two of my favorite movies) but I thought the first "Batman" was merely ok, and "Batman Returns" is just awful.

Damn you Shumacher! Damn you to heck!
but yea its a guilty pleasure of mine, stupid but still passable. some redeeming qualities.
unfortunately its spawned the one that killed the franchise.
  • Hardback247
Actually, I don't think you should blame Joel Schumacher. He was mandated by Warner Bros. to make a more lighthearted Batman movie after Batman Returns got complaints by parents saying it was too dark. Schumacher also said that if he had his way, he would adapt Batman: Year One into a live-action movie.
  • nemo3590
Wasn't the beginning of Batman Begins sort of the spiritual film version to Batman: Year One? I noticed they had a lot of similarities, especially the Jim Gorden aspect.
  • DeadlyAssassin

Yeah, the corrupt cops and the bat-call devise were also in that story.
  • TheAntWarrior

I gotta say, I also like this film. It's camp silly fun, and it's not obnoxiously awful like Batman and Robin. I prefer the darker films like the Dark Knight but I can still enjoy this.
  • ironiking
Agreed. There was some fun to be had here. The only fun in Batman and Robin was Arnold's one-liners.
  • Dakota The Mad
    avatar
Yeah. I personally thought Jim Carrey was the best part in Batman Forever. Maybe is was just from the fact Tommy Lee Jones' role was bad.
  • Spider-Matt

The only good thing about this movie is Jim Carrey!

This was great, you made a lot of valid points. Batman Forever was one of my favorite movies but I will admit that it has not aged very well. Tommy Lee Jones was awful and there are pointless scenes and plot holes. Some of the jokes are lame too. However it's still a lot more fun than Batman Returns or Batman & Robin. It's good mindless fun.

This movie was meh for me. I like the over the top Jim Carrey, at least it looks like he's having fun. And the over the top laundry scene with Robin like he's Jackie Chan or something. I just wanted to play
"Everybody was Kung Fu Washing! HU! HA! Drying clothes as fast as lightning!"
  • mindflyer  - Kung Fu Washing
    avatar
That part actually reminds me of the Hong Kong movie "Dreadnaught" starring Yuen Biao (Jackie Chan's "little brother") which has a far better kung fu washing scene that actually plays into the plot!
  • True Grave
I really enjoyed this one actually. It wasn't a good batman movie necessarily, but it was a Good comic-style action movie starring batman.

I absolutely love the music and the whole early 90's NEON style to the movie also. Sooo much NEON! *drools*

Jim carey wouldn't be my first choice as ridler, but he still put everything he had into the to role and stole the show. Some of his lines were clever/funny also. Same goes for two-face, they both had a greater on-screen presence in the movie than batman did.
  • TOOTCB
That wasn't an extra in the background. It was Gossip Gerty, played by Bob Kane's wife.

I would laugh if Bruce Wayne had someone with the last name "Bates" staying with him, that would be so embarrasing for Alfred if he had to address the person by proper title.

God, Tommy Lee Jones's makeup was awful. And that silver Riddler outfit looked way too much like Gozer.
  • locuas
Actually, yes, Two-face NEEDS to have everything in two...it sounds a little silly, i know, but believe me, there is a reason for it.
  • TragicGuineaPig
    avatar
Even still, what they did with him in this was way over the top.

Isn't it sad that the Batman cartoon actually had more dignity than this movie?
  • Carteeg_Struve

I remember watching the first action scene in the theater, and feeling embarrassed for watching it.

The tonal shift from the last two was so harsh and so bad that I ended up hating this movie even more than "Batman & Robin".
  • TragicGuineaPig
    avatar
So basically, the plot revolves around mind control - WHICH IS THE MAD HATTER'S SCHTICK, NOT THE RIDDLER'S!

  • DeadlyAssassin

Mad Hatter was originally planned as a villain for this movie.
  • Trencher
Bah Batman forever was not that bad.
  • TheBechtloff

I hated Jim Carey as Riddler. I prefer a more subdued Riddler, similar to how he was in Batman TAS. When played all goofy and over the top Riddler just comes across as a pussy version of the Joker to me.

Ugh. I know I'm going to get hell for this considering it was a joke, nothing serious. The review itself is hilarious, but I need to get this out, considering it's been happening in parodies and comedies a lot lately. Just throwing this out there: this may turn into a rant. Just warning ya.

Why is it that when a female character appears looking not only fine as hell, but also freely expressing her sexuality, she gets called a slut for it? I know nothing serious was meant by it in the video, but that doesn't make it any less irritating. I just think with it being the 21st century and all that women should be allowed to be sexy if they want to and not get degraded for it. If women are going to be slut shamed, men should be slut shamed too to even the score (especially considering it's much more socially acceptable for men to be promiscuous than it is for women). Anyways. Sorry to be a downer and get all political up in here, but I had to say it before I went any further.
  • brick mooncode
    avatar
Yeah, and what about incest and child abuse? Also wrong. I know nothing serious was meant by it in the video, but that doesn't make it any less irritating.
Seriously though, men and women are not opposing teams, if men started getting slut-shamed it wouldn't even any scores, it would just be randomly punishing one group of guys for crimes committed by a different group of guys (and girls).

Kilmer is NOT the best Batman, every Batman but Keaton loses by default because they all suck at playing Bruce Wayne, and the only other decent ones (Kilmer and Bale) are just doing hacky impressions of Keaton.
  • fanime1  - Love this movie and this review

I'll admit, this is such a guilty pleasure for me. Jim Carrey was the first actor whose name I knew and my favorite as a child. For that reason, this was my favorite Batman film growing up (Now it's Batman Returns since I am a big Tim Burton fan). Still, I do know now how goofy this movie is. But I'm glad you enjoyed Jim Carrey in this as much I do still do. He was the best part of the movie. I loved your review. I cracked up throughout. My favorite joke of yours was the one where you impersonated Alfred after Dick said, "Now." That was hilarious. Can't wait for your review of Spiderman 3.
  • Redrally  - Chris O'Donnell, who played Robin
I'm pretty certain he was in his 20s at the time, but yeah, a teenager he wasn't. But now he is nearing 40...he still looks the same! O_O
  • TheGreatPretender
I thought Val Kilmer was the worst Batman ever. I mean, he's all right. But I just can't get over that lip. He's got the weirdest upper lip. And when you put a cowl on a guy with a weird lip, then ALL we can see is that damn lip!
  • rudy023

Not really that bad a movie, but maybe the shift from the darker tone of the other two movies to such a campy one was jarring for some. I like Keaton's Batman over the rest, but that's my preference. Looking forward to the Spiderman 3 review. I think that was a far worse movie than this one. & no incest joke?....boo!

I saw Batman forever when I was 7 and remember actually liking it a lot. As an adult I can now see all its flaws

Yes, Batman Forever is pretty dumb, but I still find it to be pretty fun.

The worst part was how everyone convinced themselves that this movie was good at the time just because they hated Returns so much.
  • Ranchoth
    avatar
Nothing will convince me that *someone* cast Chris O'Donnell in this flick because he was pretty.

Which he is, I'll grant. Even though I'd enjoy beating HIS Robin to death with a crowbar, too.
  • Mummra4ever
I get if some people enjoy Jim Carrey in this movie for being over the top and goofy but for me I couldn't enjoy his performance because it was too much for me. I mean if they were trying to have him be that way and still be a serious threat to Batman then they failed completely. It's hard to take him seriously because of how too much over the top he is and he comes across as a obsessive fan boy stalker with his love for Bruce Wayne. You could take Jack Nicolson's Joker more seriously in comparison because before he became the Joker for example he came across as a dangerous psychotic who would have someone killed if they so much as said anything bad about him. There was a darkness to his character which is absent in Carry's Riddler and is just the over the top goofyness. So there's really nothing to make him in any way menacing or threatening to buy him as a threat to be taken in any way seriously.
  • korruption
Wouldn't Batman: Neon have been a more appropriate title? Not to subtly reference the worst brawler game ever conceived or anything...
  • RJ49  - Funny review and returning nostalgia
I remember watching this movie repeatedly when I was young and loving it. Now, I consider it a Guilty Pleasure. I still loving watching for Jim Carrey's Hammy-as-Hell performance but I still found the review to be incredibly funny. Another great review, MikeJ!

I can't wait to see your Spiderman 3 review (I actually liked that movie, too.)

You have a problem with the voice commands? How about the extremely long pipeline that starts 80 stories up drops down under Wayne Enterprises and travels hundreds of miles towards the BAtcave. How was this thing built, and during it's construction did no one notice this endless tunnel being constructed, I doubt he had government or city approval on this? Why is it needed? If you consider by the time he's traveled hundreds of miles underground, changed into Batman and then drove himself hundreds of miles back to Gotham the criminals would have escaped or killed a bunch of people it would be more practical to build a secret room inside the tower with a spare Batsuit and gadgets considering he's RIGHT THERE!
