The question I have is: When he was getting a blow job from a man, did they take a picture of that?

Bloody hated the first one, and this seems much the same. So damn pessimistic. Awesome review too.

The problem I had with this movie is the time travel aspect has NO STRUCTURE! In the first movie, it's set up: it's always the journals (until the end) and it's always moments that Ashton says he blacked out and can't remember for the most part (which is smart, as it is a literal gap for him to fill out however he wants). It would also keep going back farther and farther in the past so he didn't go to the past of an alternate time line.

Here: FUCK IT. As long as there was a picture or something to remind him or the past, he can go there whenever he wants.

Oh boy Erica Durance is so cute here. And i liked the first one, the only tolerable serious Ashton Kutcher film.
  • DisappearingBears
My issue with this series is that it takes the premise to such an extreme. Okay, so chaos theory, yadda yadda. Folks, one butterfly beating its wings isn't going to cause a hurricane on the other side of the world, that's ridiculous. Cause and effect isn't that wacky.

But this movie runs with that premise anyway, and has the main character apparently do business dealings with the freaking mafia and get blow jobs from men if he becomes successful WHAT!?!?! See, that's what I'm talking about. The consequences for certain actions are so absurdly over-the-top that you can't possibly find them plausible.

    OMG, this is stupid!

    ...

At-least the first one had a time machine and a dilemma... this one is plain nonsense.

Doesn't even deserve the same title.

This guys is so emo. He lost his job. So what? At least his loved ones are still alive. He probably went back in time for every mundane annoyance in his life. Left your cell phone at home? Travel back in time.

Woah, seriously, what part of Time Travel turned him into a murdering gay psychopath?

That male blowjob scene came the fuck out of nowhere...no pun intended, seriously.

I love Erica Durance, but her choice in movies to star in is not that great, and I blame Uwe Boll's House of the Dead.

I love the first movie. Saw it in the theater, and loved how not politically correct it is. At the time I couldn't wait to get it on DVD. Its a very thought provoking film IMO.

The second one I watched most of it once. No back story into his childhood, he conveniently realizes he can go back in time reflecting about the car accident. It seemed like they didn't care about making a decent movie. The first movie, they waited years to make that movie. That was their movie to make. If they made just that one movie they would be happy. They saved up money from other movies they made (The first Final Destination movie for example) to make this one. It was obviously a movie that meant a lot to them. So making two really poorly thrown together sequels is a shame.

    There's a Butterfly Effect 2???
    And 3???

Looks like this film reuses a plot device from the first film, but doesn't do anything with it.
And because of the "no matter what you do, something will always go wrong" aspect, the plot is 100% predictable.

The baby obviously is supposed to have inherited his time traveling abilities and now travels back in time to bring back daddy.

Which is even more stupid than the reincarnation idea......

I just want to say I'm really, really debating with myself whether I want to watch this.

I saw the first Butterfly Effect (not of my own choice though) and it just made me feel sick inside for hours, if not days.

My big question about the first movie is: Why in the hell did the writers, producers, director, etc., think it was a good idea to establish genuinely interesting themes of the chaos theory in a setting of unrelenting vomit-inducing, horrible horrible things that make me wish I was in the deepest pit of hell instead of watching this movie?
  • hauntedufo
I'm reminded of that Family Guy episode where Peter says he built a panic room as a way of getting away from the terrible, terrible movie that was The Butterfly Effect.

I didn't know there were sequels to The Butterfly Effect. The first one was bad enough. As this review points out it looks like one of those sequels that simply rehashes the first film.

Seriously, his delivery is perfect and the random knowing winks to the audience had me laughing more than they should have, he's great.

I think the deal with the baby is that he inherited his father's time-travel abilities...which also stupid. Time-travel is genetic?

When I first saw this in theaters I was a huge fan of "That 70s Show" so the idea of seeing Ashton Kutcher playing a dark serious role appealed to me.

Until I heard from a friend who saw it what was it was about...kinda turned me off. It would have been a good storyline concept involving theories behind the "Butterfly Effect" but it was executed so stupidly.

I am glad I didn't waste my money on both movies.

With NC gone MikeJ is the only comedy reviewer I find worth following now, FB and Todd being the "analytical" ones. If those three go.. hello empty place in my favorites bar! :)

As for Butterfly Effect, I find the original cut of the first one ok. Not great, but ok. Fittingly depressing and well rounded, if one can ignore all the stupidities and plot holes. I didn't even know they made sequels and..well.. I'm not really terribly sad I missed out on them. :)
  • bificommander
I haven't seen the first or the second one, but I hate the concept in general. Despite being named after it, it pisses all over the idea of the butterfly effect and chaos theory. This isn't chaos, this is a highly specific fate ensuring that your situation becomes worse. The IMHO reprehensible moral is that it's wrong to want to change bad things, because it's unnatural to change anything, and the sentient universe hates you. There are many different yet good messages you could send about how to deal with misfortune. Saying "Though it up, cause it's the best possible thing that could have happened, anything else that had happened would have been worse" isn't among them.

Before it went of into the mind-fuckery, the first few chapters of Braid had a fun discussion about using time travel for personal happiness. It described how the relationship between the protagonist and his 'princess' got akward and stale, because they could just time travel and correct anything that went wrong in their relationship. I'd watch a time travel movie about that. Shame Braid's story went off the rails shortly thereafter, talking about everything and nothing and only revealing that it was about the development of the atomic bomb all along to players who completed the incredibly difficult optional goals (which include waiting in one particular level for more than one real-time hour for a platform to move).
  • baba44713
".. talking about everything and nothing and only revealing that it was about the development of the atomic bomb all along .."

Only it wasn't. It was just a popular quote fitted in just to further confuse the players who desperately wanted to decipher it and to further crap on the already intangible and unintelligible mess. The point wasn't to make it all clear it was about the atomic bomb all along, the point was to alleviate the mindfuck to the point of mindgangbang. Which is why as much as I appreciate Johnathan Blow as a game designer I absolutely detest him as a storyteller. He doesn't write to tell a story, he writes so he can masturbate on thinking about others reading stuff he writes. What a pretentious twat.

Someone should make a hacked text-free version of Braid. And then nuke the official version out of existence. Pun intended.

Threadjack over. Now to get back to Bullshit Effect 2. :P
  • Freezer  - So...
Why couldn't he have just gone back and not gone to work? Anticipate the blowout and just coast to the side of the road? Bail out after the truck stopped?

Yeah, I know the answer is "if he weren't a dumbass there'd be no movie" but still...
  • denechka  - what
"bad original"? what? first one was an awesome movie, i don't care if you find it pessimistic or what, go watch sex and the city or hanna montana then

It's hard to get invested in the characters and plot when the setting and whole world is constantly changing. Seems like a flawed concept.

And if I had that power, I'd go back and time and make it so Ashton Kutcher was never born! :D
