Wow, great review, no joke I was on the edge of my seat with my heart pounding a mile a minute, that was very intense there.
I was literally screaming "WAKE UP MIKEJ WAKE UP THE SOCK IS GOING TO KILL YOU!" at my computer monitor. I was actually scared for him and kept my eyes glued to the screen wondering whether or not The Sock would stab him, because he had gotten really realy close.
Awesome! Way to make it not only a funny and informative review Film Brain and MikeJ but very suspenceful more so than any other suspence movie I have seen lately. :D
Also I know what slash fics I am going to be reading tonight ;)

Wow. I gotta say, I haven't laugh this hard at the start and end of a vid in such a while. This review made my day.
As for the film, I agree that it's the weakest of the two Matrix sequels, especially considering it came out the same year Reloaded did. They should've just left the original the way it was.
-
I have been waiting for this
The first to reviews was fun. And this didn't disapoint. But i did find it a little repetitive. Fasr to many looking at each other in disbeliefe jokes, and not enought jokes about the script, and the way the characters talk (I remenber MikeJ's brilliant joke in the first one, where he commens on the scriptwriting).
About the film
Dont think its that bad. Didn't get the ending the first time (the ending Both MikeJ and filmbrain ignored), but the movies has grown on me.

True, but lets remember here people, MikeJ waking up was a life and death situation in the review, and he needed something to shock him into waking up.
I have had dreams like that too where I do something that is so completely the opposite of what I would do or have something happen to me so shocking in my dreams, that the brain's reaction will force me to awaken. I think that is what they were trying to do when they kiss.
So its not as if there was no reason for it other than yaoi fangirl fodder.

Mmm? Funny, I don't recall FilmBrain ever showing interest in women. Ever. He's also adorable, like a baby lion.
Most if not all of the reviewers are characters & the reviewers are actors & their characters may not reflect their true selves.
As a BL fangirl, I feel cheated out of that moneyshot at the end. lol.

Goddammit, why must EVERY homosexuality-related joke be considered "homophobic"? It's an established gag in Mike J and Film Brain's videos that they dislike each other, so the thought of kissing is something they would both find repulsive.
My brother is gay as well, but I don't really know why it's worth mentioning. Someone's opinions should be valid whether or not they know someone directly related to them.
On another note, as someone who actually DOES have a phobia (of sharp objects), the last few seconds made me very uncomfortable even though I knew we wouldn't see anything happen to Mike. Damn that sock...

I always figured the ending of the movie was basically this:
When Smith was "deleted" by Neo at the end of the first movie, it removed all of the Matrix's limitation on Smith's programing, allowing him to become the cloning virus he was for the second two movies. When Smith assimilated Neo at the end of Revolutions, it gave the Matrix, through its direct connection to Neo, a conduit into Smith where it forcibly purged him from the system, killing him once and for all.
As to the tripe at the end with the Oracle and the Architect... who fucking knows :(
-
08.30.2011 - 09:03 | TheGrimHeaper
I think Smith 'explained' it himself in an earlier fight in one of the two sequels. Whatever Neo did to Smith at the end of the first movie didn't entirely erase Smith, and also imprinted part of Neo onto his code. (Also possibly part of smith imprinted on Neo)
If I try to draw more meaning than was probably ever meant to be put into the sequels - Smith's revelation in the first movie (Humans are a virus). Part of Neo is imprinted on Smith -> Part of smith is now human -> Therefore Smith now reproduces endlessly until he uses up all available resources and spreads to another area.
And if we assume the above to be true, it's likely the reason why the robots couldn't purge the smith virus was because they couldn't develop a proper antivirus until they had both pieces of the puzzle that is virus-Smith. Enter Neo getting assimilated while hooked directly up to the matrix through the robot city; Now the robots have a before and after on both Smith and Neo, can separate the two and apply the antivirus derived from this process to the entire matrix. Why this process lights up Neo like a Jack-o-lantern? Well, I'm going with more "Effects for the sake of effects" that the sequels like so much.
...
There's an equal possibility that the script kinda sucks, and the sequels explain their self so poorly that we're really just left to figure stuff out on our own; So ultimately no one's explanation of what happened is entirely wrong, and this is only my read of it.
-
08.30.2011 - 12:11 | trlkly
My personal belief is that he had enough of Neo in him that electrocuting and killing Neo also killed Smith. An agent automatically leaves the body of someone when they are registered as dead, so Smith thus left everyone else.
That weird shocking scene doesn't make sense to be an antivirus, unless the antivirus was just an amplification of Neo's signal.

Naja, exspecially part 3 was pretty easy to understand and some of the "questions" can be answerd by just, well, watching the movie. I really don't get why all these questions are here. X-D
Sadly, this part 2 is much infirior to the first and less funny. And has less MasakoX, which is sad to the max. Oh, but the "t-rex"-Gag was pretty awesome! Although half the time I thought, that the clips from the movies were the more entertaining bits than the commentaries. Oh well...

Good point about how this would have made for ONE good movie. Five years ago, I watched a fan edit called Matrix DeZIONized, which cut out all the crap that happened in Zion. By focusing solely on Neo, the film actually made a little sense. Not sure if I'm right, but here's what I gathered....
Basically, the Neo scenario had happened several times before, but each time, Neo and Zion were defeated, and the status quo would be restored. This Neo, however, was more successful because he was motivated by love (Trinity) rather than solely towards saving Zion, being "the one", etc. At least, that's what I got out of it. I don't really want to spend time figuring out if I'm right or wrong.
I saw these sequels in theaters, and enjoyed the action for what it was, but looking back, these movies really could have been better handled, and the effort put into numerous fan edits like DeZIONized really cements that fact.

08.30.2011 - 04:58 | SuperSloucherWhat's with the homophobia guys? I can understand shuddering and being uncomfortable when you're doing the actual kiss (because Mike is heterosexual I assume), but once you're out of the dream you no longer have to kiss Film Brain and everything is over. So why do you then climb into the shower and start crying about "getting clean"? Seems a bit like "oh no, get the gay off me!" I think Sirsygnus is right, this is 2011. I thought we were passed this... :(
Oh, and the review was rushed and ever so dull.

@SuperSloucher: Come on...
For a lot of straight people the thought of having to kiss another male is revolting. It has nothing to do with hating gay people, but the fact that we wouldn't be comfortable with the idea, in the same way we wouldn't be comfortable kissing our own grandmother or a chimp.
It can also be interpreted as Mike finding the thought of kissing Film Brain in particular disgusting.
Fuck uber PC-ness.

08.30.2011 - 05:53 | Non natoThe thing about the battle for Zion is that it becomes a bit silly with these advanced machines attacking en masse without any ranged weapons. They could've just brought one rock each to drop on the humans and they would have won easily. Something is wrong when stone age technology would be a step up.

Also, for relying on getting into melee range to do any damage, those sentinels never seemed to be in any hurry to close the gap... Whenever the ones in the front of a swam get too damaged, instead of pressing forward, the ones on the side do this odd circle-back maneuver that doesn't seem to serve any purpose and slows down the over-all advance on their target...
Not to mention all swarming from one single direction, when swarming from three would seem to be more efficient for taking out a lone ACU ("Huh, those things can only fire at us in two different directions... why don't we attack from three vectors?", "Shut up steve, we'll loose fewer units this way.", "But while he's slowing down two vectors with bullets, the third can reach him unopposed, ultimately ending his fire sooner...", "You just don't get it, do you steve?!")

Sorry, but when your complaints about the movie not explaining things is justified by your cutting over the sections that explain the details, it doesn't help your cause.
I can enjoy a review that trashes a movie I like, but at least one of two things have to be done: (1) the complaints have to be justified, and (2) the riffs have to be funny.
Unfortunately, this review is filled with complaints that are not justified, and there aren't really any riffs.
To make matters worse, I don't even like this movie (although I still think Part 2 is the best in the series... Part 1 is highly overrated). I think Part 3 IS completely overblown in special effects and bad storytelling. But when the issues brought up through out the review amounts to "I don't care enough to listen to what's going on anymore" (especially for the entire review episode), then what should be an entertaining review decays into pointless whining.
Everybody involved in this one has done other great reviews - MANY great reviews - in the past, but I can't say this one was done well at all.
I hope future installments avoid the major problems this review had.

Great review, hope to see more Brit TGWTG member crossovers in the future (Whether they're like this or just cutting between 2 or more people in their usual locations).
Also unlike the people screaming homophobia I didn't think that's what the shower scene was supposed to be. I mean, it had something to do with it I guess, but ya never know, maybe it was intended to just be Mike's reaction to the entire review, not just the kiss at the end.
And even if it was, who cares? It was an in-character thing and was obviously not meant to be taken seriously.

Film Brain/MikeJ do me a favor and don't even bother addressing the alleged "homophobia" issues in this video. Don't give the PC police the satisfaction.
News flash, straight guys don't like kissing other guys. Its a deeply regrettable truth, buts its true.
And really... would homophobic men be willing to get SO close to actually kissing on-camera? XD

08.30.2011 - 09:21 | morningmooMy take is that the Oracle intentionally allowed Smith to copy over her making him a greater threat even to the machines. She did this in the hopes that it would force a truce between the humans and the machines and it payed off. That's what the Architect meant when he said you play a dangerous game. The Oracle however believes the peace will not last and that is why she suspects they will see Neo again. Not Neo necessarily but "the One"
It is explained that Neo and Smith are opposites. Whereas Neo is the One, Smith is the Many. Where Neo is controlled by somewhat irrational love, Smith is controlled by irrational hate and seeks to destroy everything.
The Oracle explains the vampires by saying all the supernatural stuff you hear about are programs not doing what they are supposed to be doing. They were targeted for deletion but went to the Merovingion so he could hide them in the Matrix

The best part of this really was the ending- mostly because Film Brain's summary wrapped up all the complaints nicely, and everything else felt like padding. So many nitpicks, moments where you just looked bored and a general lack of... energy, is the word I think I'll use. It really didn't feel like the guys had their heart in this at all, which I can understand. It's a cross-over review done at what I presume to be a con, and lord knows those can end up rushed and hasty.
And since it seems we've got ourselves a nice little debate regarding homophobia and "hetero-shaming" (my god man how does the doucheyness not just make your head explode in gooey chunks), my two cents are these: if this is supposed to be in-character, do you want us to believe that a character perfectly at peace with killing prostitutes and raping his sister wigs out at the thought of kissing a... MAAAN?!?!! I mean, yeah- psychotic killers can be bigoted too, but Mike's psycho killer always gave me that vibe that he wouldn't mind anything as long as he gets to feed on it's vital fluids afterwards. And if he's supposed to be closeted... why? HE KILLS PEOPLE FOR FUN, it's like... what has he got to be ashamed of? Why would a character like that NOT just creep out on anyone in his vicinity?
Combine this with the completely unnecessary reaction towards the dance club in the second movies review having *GASP* MEN WHO LIKES MEN IN A PLACE WHERE EVERYONE WEARS TIGHT LEATHER*GAAASP* and Film Brain's comment that he just wants to see the lesbians, certainly not those GAY GUYS, and it just comes off as over all mean-spirited and painfully unfunny.
But, then again... maybe I should reel back some of the criticisms. After all, I wouldn't want to fall into that old constitutional trap of inadvertent "hetero-shaming". A silent, but pervasive killer of sophisticated and respectful dialog, that one...
-
08.30.2011 - 12:00 | Furious George
Good heavens,The overreaction here is just brilliant. XD
To the users with brains I am sorry for stating the obvious, but it must be stated apparently... MikeJ WAS overreacting over a man-on-man kiss. THAT was the joke. An exaggerated response to a situation that doesn't really call for it is, what many would call, comedy.
This also accounts for the bit about men kissing in that club... ya see, the joke was that Film Brain was sharing a view that was appealing to the least-common denominator (see: Homer).
And really, I am pretty sure that the ending joke was more about him kissing Film Brain then just another man... it is really no different then Angry Joe being creeped out by LordKat's strawberry antics in the anniversary vids. Where was the outcry then?
You see, this is why we can't have nice things. If a joke is TOO funny, someone has to cry over it. I really hope that neither of these fine internet critics change an iota of their style of humor over this.
-
08.31.2011 - 10:10 | Skyscraper
It was a joke, that much I understood. But I didn't think it was funny. I find no humor in seeing a character we know is capable of despicable acts over-react to something so comparatively minor.
The reason nobody decried Angry Joe being wigged out over LordKat's strawberry antics was because that was MEANT to be LordKat being overly creepy and deliberately slimy. There was nothing like that here. FilmBrain was never portrayed as being predatory or forcing himself on MikeJ, he was just there, in his head. A figment in MikeJ's mind. What purpose did the scene serve anyway? Is MikeJ's character supposed to be closeted? Was it to appease fangirls? If you're bold enough to do that, you're pretty much bold enough to not play him feeling icky and violated over something fairly innocuous.
And if the humor is that a character is bigoted and mean-spirited and just thinks that a scenario that played out in his own mind, of his own making was icky, well.. who finds that funny? There needs to be a twist, because someone being mean-spirited and never receiving comeuppance or having their flaws pointed out is STILL just being mean-spirited and unnecessary, ala Family Guy. There was no twist beyond "I kissed a guy and it made me feel like I had to shower to wash the filth away". That doesn't make me laugh, it makes me feel uncomfortable.
Which isn't to say horrible doesn't work- MikeJ has succeeded at such jokes in the past. In a cross-over with Guru Larry they talked amicable about ravaging their respective sisters, but it was undercut by the two of them fighting over tea and being very understated about what horrible, yet exaggeratedly sophisticated, people they were. Compare to a recent joke where he just opens up with saying he murdered a prostitute and it never goes ANYWHERE, it's just there to make him look horrible and fails at being funny. No twist- no laughs.
And finally- lowest-common denominator humor is beneath both of these reviewers, who have proven in the past they can write far more intelligent and wittier japes than simply drooling over lesbians.
-
08.31.2011 - 10:37 | Furious George
- Are we watching the same videos? Film Brain was DEFINITELY being portrayed as creepy here, though not to the same extent as LordKat.
- Again, you are disregarding the fact that it was more about kissing Film Brain then a man. They don't seem to like each other in-character so why would he feel good about kissing him?
- And I'm glad you don't find low-brow humor funny but I don't see how that matters.
You not finding them funny =/= homophobia. I didn't roll on the floor with laughter at the gay joke but I'm not about to cry over it like I don't get that they obviously meant no offense.
I am glad that we had this discussion though. It makes it abundantly clear that your problem with this video is more centered around humor then any legitimate evidence of disrespect to life-style choice. Feel free to continue to overreact.
-
09.01.2011 - 06:22 | Skyscraper
-Apart from one scene in the beginning, entirely inconsequential to the main plot, FilmBrain did one creepy thing. He shouted at MikeJ when he was upset. So yes, we certainly must have been watching different videos.
-I disregard the fact that it's more about Film Brain then about kissing a man, because that makes no sense to me. Film Brain has not done anything more or less frightening or repugnant than ANYTHING MikeJ's character has ever done, and I don't see any sign of an actual rivalry between them that makes him so awful to kiss.
-Not finding low-brow humor funny matters because they USED low brow humor, just like you said. You said that Film Brain's lesbian joke was just meant to be a tacky low-brow joke, as if that was a defense for it, and I replied that I don't think it's a good defense or excuse for unfunny jokes.
I'm going to say this for clarity's sake: I do not believe that either Film Brain nor MikeJ are homophobes who feel deep, physical loathing and anger at the mere thought of men kissing. But I will also state that even if you don't MEAN offense you can still CAUSE offense with a poorly thought out joke, and comment sections like these are there to let us, their viewers, share our opinions on what we thought worked and didn't work. So why shouldn't I use it to point out what made me feel uncomfortable?
Feel free to accuse me of making a mountain out of a molehill, it's certainly telling that this discussion has become more about a few isolated jokes than about the over-all quality of this episode, but when I'm given the opportunity to let my opinion be known in the hopes it can affect the creators to do better than this... I'm going to take it. They may do as they please with this opinion, ignore, listen, make a scrap-books of silly people starting internet arguments in their comment section, whatever. But I'm still going to take the opportunity to tell them I thought the joke fell flat and made me uncomfortable, because whether you think I'm wrong or not... that's how I feel, mang. No other reason or agenda to it than that.

"Do you want us to believe that a character perfectly at peace with killing prostitutes and raping his sister wigs out at the thought of kissing a... MAAAN?!?!! "
Uh... yeah? That's completely reasonable. Not all psychopaths are going to be fine with doing just about anything. Sorry, you guys are just a bit overly sensitive about this.
Also as several people have mentioned, it's probably the thought of kissing Film Brain in particular that his character has a problem with.
Most importantly, it's meant to a joke. Whether you find it funny or not is another issue.
Nice review guys, keep up the good work.
