What did you have against Aliens? I haven't seen the movie in years, so i don't know if it's aged over the years, but from what i remember back when i first saw it, i liked it.
And for the video, I was introduced to the Alien series pretty weirdly, i watched them in backwards order, so Resurrection will always have a place in my heart for Nostalgic reasons.

Alien 3 is a great movie. What the hell are you talking about? Finally the series was back to a single alien fighting a lot of humans that are not really prepared for that. It had it's action moments but the characters are back to normal. I can agree on Resurrection being a bad movie but I at least can watch it without grinding my teeth uncontrollably when certain characters are on screen like I do in Aliens.

I'm pretty sure stupid wouldn't be the right word to describe such an asinine statement like that. Not to sound like a sheep but Aliens is considered one of the best movie sequels ever made. Sure it went in a different direction, (which I'm assuming is why you don't like it), but for what it was it was awesome. This (as well as Alien 3) is practically what I would call butchering a movie franchise.
Edit: Unless you were referring to Alien 3.

@der_ketzer
OK your stupid. Alien was amazing, Aliens was an awesome sequel and Alien 3 SUCKED! She crash lands on the penal colony of brits apparently, everyone was killed in the crash except Ripley which totally makes the entire ending of Aliens worthless, they cut the budget and because of that many of the new Alien concepts and designs were not even used. Your entitled to your opinion but your the first I have ever known to have it.

After growing into adulthood and taking time to actually watch the Alien movies, i agree - Aliens sucked compared to Alien. Alien was just perfect.
Aliens just ruined the Metroid feeling... adding more people and more aliens - it made the movie seem more generic than Alien.
The people in Alien actually acted as i would imagine a group of people to react to such a situation. The people in Aliens just seemed to be movie characters rather than people.
-
07.14.2011 - 12:05 | nesjunkie
that's because the director, on purpose, did not tell them what would be happening. He wanted genuine reactions. Well I know he did that for the famous chest bursting scene with John Hurt. I'm not sure about the rest of the movie.
I actually like all 4 movies. When you live with four kids(my sister's family lives with us) and all you get to see is crappy kids shows and movies, you tend to find anything NOT kid oriented really good.

Okay. You're stupid.
Kidding. With movies, it's all a matter of opinion, anyway, and there's no such thing as a stupid opinion. There's just the common and the unique. For that matter, you should be glad that you were able to enjoy anything about Alien 3, because most people, including myself, find that movie irredeemably awful.
And for the record, Aliens is my personal favorite entry in the franchise, so that's where I'm coming from.

I agree Alien 3 is horribly underrated and a great movie(directors cut) but calling Aliens horrible?
I will always prefer a single alien because it makes them more dangerous, and Alien will always be the best out of the series, but Aliens bad?
There's preferences and there is bad taste.
I can't wait for Prometheus to reunite H.R. Giger and Ridley Scott in the Alien universe.

07.14.2011 - 16:25 | Arcexyeah, swing and a miss. aliens is a good movie and a classic. 9/10 "alien" quotes come from this movie. I had thought it was widely known that 1 was amazing, 2 is great and 3 is okay.

I'll be honest, I'd prefer this movie over Alien 3 any day. I mean, while as a sequel it doesn't do justice to Alien and Aliens. But at the same time, it does have some fun and hilarity to it to the point where it ventures into that so bad that it's good territory (whereas Alien 3 was like watching the first film, only in that it was unenjoyable, boring, and had a storyline that was rather cringe worthy.)

Alien was essentially a combination of Dark Star and Shivers, which were John Carpenter's and David Cronenberg's first movies, respectively. Although in a strange twist, it actually beat Shivers to theaters, due to being inspired by the screenplay itself rather than the movie, which had an extremely delayed production process.

I slated Alien 3 when it first came out, but the director's cut is soooo much better than the original release. The theatrical version is butchered. I'm quite fond of the film now. It's weaker than the two prequels, but I still class it as the last in a great Trilogy (away with you Resurrection).
Aliens is my favourite btw. You must not like manly 80s' action flicks, der_ketzer. You probably hate Predator too, don't cha? :P

07.14.2011 - 00:55 | TheRealJonnyCage
This!! When i first watched Alien 3, it was the Theatrical Cut, and like everyone, i hated it! Then years later, i decide to rent it to give it another go and boy was i not disappointed. It was the Directors Cut and though it wasn't amazing, at least i could follow better this time.
So, i think people should be willing to give 3 another chance if your yet too see the Directors Cut.

In defense of Joss Whedon, and when I say this keep in mind I'm only a fan who generally likes his work and not one of his super crazy devoted fanatical fans...
He said that the director butchered his script, and that when he watched the first screening of this movie, he cried in the theater. This movie was apparently the reason he never lets anyone else direct a script that he himself wrote.

I haven't seen Resurection but I think the first 3 are classics.
Alien: The Company has screwed us over and we have to improvise against a homicidal monster. Fuck!
Aliens: The Company has brought in the army so we have the weapons... but hey nobody said there was an army of them... double fuck.
Alien 3: We got out of that one but now we're up against loads of the buggers in a prison with a bunch of violent sex offenders with no weapons... tripple fuck!

07.14.2011 - 02:37 | StockmunchaAliens was near perfect in my opinion. From Sigourney Weaver's powerful and captivating lead performance, to the diverse supporting cast, to the frequently quotable script, to the realistic sets, to the striking alien effects, to the haunting score, to the near nail-biting tension.
"We're in some real pretty shit now man!"
-
07.14.2011 - 02:40 | LordNiftyI can understand the film audio being so low when you are speaking, but it should be loud enough to hear when we are supposed to be understanding what is being said in the movie.
-
07.14.2011 - 02:47 | baba44713Back at the time, I thought this movie was weird. Unenjoyable, vapid, but mostly weird.
I mean, in all three previous movies humans actually acted like humans. In this one everyone is either mugging, overacting or appearing as if high on LSD. The kill scene with the guy checking out his brain is the perfect example.. it's like something out of one of those 80's B-horror movies. Is it supposed to be funny? Horrific? Scary? Or the basketball scene... this is supposed to be the same universe the first three movies are set in? In any case scene after scene just pulls you out of the movie and makes you realize you have been duped into watching a pile of crap with "Alien" logo slapped on it.
I remember talking my friends into seeing this flick and being horribly ashamed afterward. I don't think I suggested a movie again for at least a year. Of course, in retrospect, had I known the horrors of AvP beyond the horizon, I would have probably felt much better.
-
07.14.2011 - 02:57 | RennyI agree with der_ketzer about Alien3. It's pretty much a call-back movie with a lot of refences to Alien both plotwise as der_ketzer pointed out and dialoguewise "Heere kitty, heeere kitty-kitty-kitty". I also like the darker tone, it really feels like an end of the line movie. Ripley's lost everything she held dear and now she herself must make the ultimate sacrifice. All in all, Alien3 is for me a more emotional movie (love the soundtrack!) than Aliens which is also good movie but on other merits. It's an enjoyable popcorn-action fest, and I love the Vietnam-theme.

Was this review abridged or edited in any way? It seems like you left a lot of improbable things about the movie out. Such as being able to clone Ripley after she and her Alien baby were burned alien in magma in Alien 3. I know this is the super future or whatever, but can you extract living DNA from molten lava? I'm no scientist but I would think that temperatures hot enough to destroy a human and alien body would eliminate all traces of it's DNA as well.

07.14.2011 - 03:29 | eszuranThat's not a review. That's a summary. You didn't tell me anything I wouldn't know after watching the movie. "There's Winona Ryder, there's Ripley, yeah, they walk now, yeah, ok, now there's another scene". Brilliant, just brilliant.

I have to defend this a bit. You forget to mention that prior to this, Director and art director Jeunet and Caro made Delicatessen and City of lost Children, two sci-fi masterpieces. The style in Alien Resurrection reeks of Caro, which i think is a good thing. It has a very weird tone and some wonderful actors who for the most part are regulars in Jeunets movies.
I think it´s a great film for the most part, though i dislike the whole white alien part, that´s where it gets a bit silly.

this was the first of the series I watched.
I was like "Wait is that ron Pearlman?" Because I hadn't seen him with out his hellboy makeup and I knew it was him instantly.
I like this move in a "It's bad but fun" sort of way.
Funny enough I saw Aliens second because my dad gave me the wrong laserdisc and it's the only Alien film I have gotten MOm to watch. She refuses to see the first one because of how scary she hear it is.
Personally... though the first is my favorite and always will be. I only got scared once the entire film and it was because a fave character of mine was near death. But I love it.

Oookay, what's up with the low volume in those clips?
How did they clone here, anyways? Where they searching the whole prison complex for blood drops of her Oo ?
(Not to mention that the alien queen is most likely NOT part of her DNA...)
And why are these military guys so rock-stupid? I'm pretty sure "has acid blood" is one of the first traits their brillaint scientists would find out - especially since there are more than enough wittnesses and acid marks from the third movie!
Oh, and this grenade throwing scene reminds me of the current 3D fad - with the exception that this grenade actually served a purpose.

Sorry, but please do your homework next time. Jean-Pierre Jaunet made also "City Of The Lost Children" and "Delicatessen", both were fanstastic lookin' "dark future" movies which got the director the, well, director-seat in the first place. Especially "City Of The Lost Children" is very much in the same style as "Alien 4"!
Sure, then you can say, that he had no doing in something creature-feature related, but "later he will direct Amelie" is just way too general.
And sadly, this wasn't a good review. When you cut the end of a scene like with "it's hanging from it's shoe, why didn't he just try to kick it off" or the "Ripley pulls the aliens 'tongue' out", don't cut the end where it is explained why she did it. Or with the "guy who didn't say a word, where is he from?"-bit, where you even showed the dude in a clip, where Perlman took his gun away in the basketball-room. Or the "the aliens sure get creative-eyeroll"-> there you showed as well the leading up, where Dourif trys to tame the thing with the coldgas (whatwasitsnameagain?), which was exactly the point where the alien learned to do this. ADD much?
-
07.14.2011 - 10:34 | vecaapezhaAnd it isn't even a review, he's just running through a whole movie. How much brain does one needs to do that? This much: . Ah, kids theese days. I hope that he gets a job and won't have to do this again.
-
07.14.2011 - 06:57 | dennett316
You know what...I don't like the directors cut of Aliens. The extra scenes are pretty poor and destroy the near perfect flow of the original cut. The only scene which adds anything is the scene regarding Ripley's daughter being dead, and even it takes the subtle motherhood motif and turns it into a sledgehammer.
As for Ressurrection, it's watchable but is so far below even Alien 3 (hugely underrated movie IMO, especially the Directors Cut) as to be pointless. I do like how they portrayed the Alien's as smarter creatures than they had been previously, but that's it. It's a pity Mike J left out the Newborn's bambi eyes when it's trying to lure Winona Ryder out...that shit was hilarious.
And to the guy who hates Aliens....well what can you say to that? I love Alien 3 but your comments about Aliens are such unmitigated bollocks it's untrue. Yes it's an action film, but so what, the first was basically a haunted house movie with a sci-fi theme...it's a seminal action film done to perfection and has influenced movies and games for decades since it's release for a reason. The problem is your misguided snobbery.
