I've been meaning to read the books, but my little brother was such a huge fan of the books that he was devastated by what that 'film' turned out to be. I'd remake it for all the fans of the series.
My Top 5 that SHOULD be remade:
5. Legend (Tim Curry is awesome, but MikeJ was right this world seemed so small and the actions of the main characters seemed so insignificant). The film made me think of it as a live-action Disney Fantasia.
4. Waterworld (Whoever has seen the film will know the major flaw of this film starts and ends with Kevin Costner and his ability to perform so dull that he makes Keanu Reeves look like Jack Nicholson).
3. Catwoman (Not enough space to write all the reasons).
2. Alexander (Please refer to 3rd reason).
1. Indiana Jones 4 (Remove the aliens, LeBouf, and location. Also don't shove all the references that its the 1950s down our throats, WE GET IT. In order to follow up on the Holy Grail one would have to discover something that has been sought after for centuries with equal or more fervor. Personally, I would've made the kingdom turn out to be the lost city of Atlantis. Think about it: It's one of the most recognized legends of all time. An underwater adventure with Indiana Jones, would anyone else want to see that?)
Great List Mike, keep'em coming.

Already done. There's an old Indiana Jones point and click video game, the famous "Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis" (text-only version 1992, voice ating version 1993). It was later adapted into two comics, so Wikipedia informs me, by Dark Horse comics.
Unfortunately, the story is set in the 1930s, with Nazis, but Harrison Ford has become too old for another 1930s Jones. But you could probably adapt it to Soviets easily.

Is they already made a game with a similar premise. There have been novels of Indiana Jones as well involving Stone Henge and a few other well known places.
I am also going to say that I actually liked the inclusion of aliens. Indiana Jones reflects the time he lives in and more holy artifacts would have been out of place (and honestly, what more is there? I am not a bible scholar so that is actually a serious question. I remember the Ark of the Covenant, the Holy Grail, and the Horn of Jericho, which would have made a boring movie since all it does is knock down walls assuming you march circles around them for extended periods of time first, as I recall). In the 1950's we were starting to see the birth of the great Science Fiction to come and I think the movie did well in nodding to that. And Labouf? Honestly, if you give me a choice between the Asian kid from Temple of Doom and Labouf I am gonna take Labouf every time, but I really don't understand why those characters are needed to begin with.
As for the imfamous fridge scene, I can't help but laugh at people who complain about that but had no problem with Jones falling a thousand meters to the mountain side only to be saved by an inflatable raft. Pick your battles, bro. Seriously. Not a response to you but I get tired of people complaining about it like the original movies were hyper realistic and figured I would vent about it.
Indiana Jones' biggest sin was trying to be remade when the original is a classic. It is like Star Wars prequels - even if they were handled well, many of the older fans would have compared them to the legendary older ones and found them lacking. The time for Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Aliens, and Predator is over.

I never said anything about the minor problems with Indiana 4. Please don't assume that I'm one of those insufferable fans of Indiana Jones. My only complaint is that it's very hard to top the mythical cup the Son of God drank out of followed by aliens. There aliens, just aliens. How do you go from the most sought after item in history with aliens? Ergo I thought that Atlantis, the lost civilization of countless stories and legends would create an enjoyable cinematic experience because it's one of the most recognized legends of all-time. Older than aliens (which is debatable).
Now here's my two cents about mythological items that people associate with the bible. People made items like the Holy Grail significant when the bible just mentions it as a cup. People make a big deal when they say, "The Holy Grail isn't mentioned in the Bible!" Well, of course not, it was made important by people because it happened to be a cup used by Jesus Christ; same goes for the spear that pierced his side (also called "The Spear of Longinus"). There are other items like the Seal of Solomon, which was a ring King Solomon used to control demons, but I digress.
Yet your right, Indiana Jones' biggest sin WAS trying to be remade. In the last Crusade our heroes ride off into the sunset now that's how you end a series. In this day and age, if Temple of Doom came out now we probably would have had, "Rafting the Air." Maybe one day the younger generation will get an adventure series of their own (and that's when Jackson's Lord of the Rings came out). Shalom.

Very straightforward with some interesting picks, although I'll admit that I'd never even heard of the third(?) film, Legend I think? Yeah. I couldn't agree with you more on your #1...Silent Hill could use a movie that didn't blow, as well. Both series are fantastic but were given such awful films. Your voice was mildly dull to listen to at times, but your picks were inventive and made up for it. 4/5 from me.

also hopefully the rather exceptional (well in comparison) predators gave some much needed integrity back to the franchise
however it might be a bit too soon for a reboot for the series the fallout from AVP2 needs time to clear. man that movie was so bad it actually hurts the other movies. each time you rewatch aliens or preditor in the back of your mind this moivie will rear it's ugly head and you will get that taste of muddy iron in your mouth as your body starts to hemorrhage

I know how you can Remake the D&D movie; Base the script on Neverwinter Nights or Baldur's Gate.
No, Legend is still awesome. It's one of the only 3 movies Tom Cruise ever looked attractive in & one of only 2 movies he was in I even like. It had 2 great soundtracks. If they remade it, it would get a shit-soundtrack & Currey more than likely would not reprise his role. (I will take this all back if Johnny Depp plays Jack, as he is the only remotely attractive man in modern-day Hollywood).
Resident Evil 1 was awesome; it was the rest of them that sucked donkey ball sweat. I should point out that I've never played any of the games.
Ed Glaser should follow this up with "5 movies that should be remade into hilarious Bollywood parodies."
Speaking of follow-ups, what 5 movie remakes done by the most notoriously awful remakers would make you go postal & cry into a pillow? We all love a good "what if" story.

05.05.2011 - 04:34 | TaneI would have liked to see a remake of "9". I thought the concept and setting were fantastic, but when I saw it in theaters I was quite disappointed. What should have been a movie about body and soul, or the idea of something mechanical with a consciousness to be considered life, instead turned out to be a CG action flick. All it pretty much did was take the story of the original short film and stretch it out for an hour.
Oh, and I never get tired of calling it "Little Big Planet the Movie".

Robocop remake is happening.
I liked Legend, I thought Tim Curry as the monster was scary when I was younger, but when I re-visited the film later on in life realised that's all there is to the film. It does a bad job at making the world seem big, like it was done on a stage in a theatre and you were never allowed to see the edges.
I wonder if someone can do something on Ladyhawke, because I really love that film and it's got a good cult following but no one talks about it :P

You forgot some aspects of Legend that needs to be pointed out. I agree it needs to be remade, but the Prince of Darkness (Tim Curry's role) resides in a dark, claustrophobic underworld, with a lot of elements of the natural world (the colors, the amount of life and overall control of heat versus the wintry landscape that dominates the second act of the film) removed.
Also, yes. Tom Cruise is wooden. Look at Magnolia. He hasn't gotten any better.
But Legend ISN'T an expansive world concept. Neverending Story is a parable, which is why Bastian is only passively reading it until the end. Lord of the Rings is an Epic, clearly trying for the scope and impact of the Iliad. Legend, on the other hand, is much more specific about it's demographic. It's idealization, not aggrandizement of the fantasy genre. To think of it in any way other than "this is the perfect way to segue kids into adulthood without losing any of the innocent grandeur" is like saying Krull is "A sci-fi/fantasy/ninja movie, that tries really, really hard to be good".
Admittedly, it actually IS good, but that's besides the point.
The point I'm trying to make is that films like Legend are perfect for a specific audience, much like Beastmaster or Hawk the Slayer, or the Sword and the Sorcerer. It could use a little more refinement and expansion, but there is a very likely chance that it's initial charm will be bastardized, like Lily when she's seduced by the enchanted clothing. So if it is remade, and the wonder is lost, it won't be Legend anymore. Because legends need wonder, and if taken too far (i.e. a gritty retelling), then it's not gonna be worth even someones kid's time.
ALSO, a remake of Arsenic & Old Lace, starring George Clooney, would be pretty freaking awesome.

AVP is a fantastic idea for movie. But the problem is that the creators did not get the idea. It should be what the games and comics and whatnot were. Essentially expanded Aliens universe with predators. That's it. The mistake was to place it in modern times!
MikeJ is not alone here. Angry Joe has said the same thing before... Just look at his reviews, mainly the AVP game one.
-
05.05.2011 - 13:55 | Crunchy_FrogI dunno, I must be one of the few people on this planet who liked AvP? It wasn't the greatest movie, but it was ok and had cool sets. And setting it in modern times, like the other Predator movies, instead of in the future was exactly the right choice.

I do see your point with Legend. It is still one of my favourite childhood films, mainly because of Tim Curry and that dancing robes. It would be great to see it remade with bigger sets and backgrounds for the top world but I like the tight confined space of the nether world. I'd hope it wouldn't loose the charm it had in the original.
On AvP...YES!
Resident Evil, definitely in need of a remake and to take out the Alice that really is an unnecessary Mary-Sue character.

Well, It's not really a remake, but a similar idea done a hell of a lot better: The assignment.
http://www.imdb.com/ title/tt0118647/
And don't get me wrong, I don't think face-off was done badly. A bit too much symbolism, and Travolta doesn't shut up, but the good guy is done beautifully, both by Cage and Travolta. But The assignment, has a similar idea done a lot better.

Nice list, although if it were me, I would add 1 other to that list, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. I read the entire series (and still awaiting the next book) and I loved it. Started reading when I heard about the movie, but the movie was a big let down. I thought this was gonna be treated as America's take on Harry Potter, but the movie was terrible. They made too many changes to the story, characters and overall world that it could have been called anything else and it would be fine. Remake Lightning Thief and continue it, Hollywood!!!!

05.05.2011 - 12:37 | TheMikkoA REAL Resident Evil film would be nice, but my #1 by FAR is Avatar: Last Airbender. This story, the characters, the setting, it deserved SO MUCH BETTER than it got.
-
05.05.2011 - 13:40 | Crunchy_FrogIndeed. "The Last Airbender" is one of those movies that were still-born and should be remade immediately.
If I had a say, I'd remake the whole damn Star Wars prequel trilogy (although Attack of the Clones had watchable parts, mostly because Anakin's role in Clones was smaller).
I agree, someone needs to remake the first D&D movie. Horrible. (The 2nd one was fine.)
I'm against remaking older movies (i.e. Legend, Labyrinth) just because they're old, though, and I'm happy that Tron: Legacy was not a remake but a sequel.
Great movies of the past do not need remakes. Look at what happened to Flight of the Phoenix. *shudder*
A proper second part to Never-Ending Story, covering the second half of the novel, would be cool, but you would probably have to remake the first movie too for that to work; and that prospect saddens me, because the first Never-Ending Story movie was pretty faithful to the book and had great effects for the time it was made.
There are some movies, however, where a remake would solve nothing, i.e. Eragon and Twilight, because the source material is bland and stupid.
-
05.05.2011 - 14:09 | Semudara
Personally, I'm not sure they should even bother. I mean, why SHOULD there be an "Avatar: The Last Airbender" movie, or three? The series does a better job of telling the story than even six films ever could.
Also, you need to burn for not only insulting a great fantasy novel (Eragon), but lumping it with Twilight.
For shaaaaaame.

05.05.2011 - 13:52 | Crunchy_FrogWhat else needs remaking:
Tintenherz (Inkheart)
Good book, weird and boring movie adaption. Not only did it look small budget, the choice of casting Brendan Frazer into the role of the father was a harrible miscasting.
Stardust. Good god, the Stardust movie, what a loathsome TRAVESTY. Somehow the scriptwriter and director completely missed all points of the novel by Neil Gaiman, and instead turned it into an utterly boring, infuriating piece of tripe, filled to the brim with Hollywood clichés. The characters resemble their counterparts from the novel in name only, and the story of the movie has weird changes that make no sense, instead making things nonsensical that made sense in the book, as well as destroying all atmosphere. REMAKE IT NOW.
Not a remake in itself, because there never *has* been a real Dragonlance movie, but I'd like to see a Dragonlance live-action adaption.
Alien 4. Interesting concept, but what it ended up as was a horrible execution, idiotic story, ridiculous characters. The only good thing in that movie was Sigourney Weaver looking feral.
Krull. There. I said it. I never liked it. On the other hand, do we really need a remake of what was basically a pretty cookie-cutter fantasy script? No.

05.05.2011 - 14:40 | starry66I kind of like "Face/Off", but I definitely agree with "D&D". I never actually saw the other three. I here that "Doom" is being remade. I hope they get it right this time.
I'd like to see a remake of the live-action Inspector Gadget movie from '99. This time, they should keep Claw's face hidden, and add someone who can bring more liveliness to the character than Broderick did. Steve Carrell might work.
"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" should also be remade. This time more faithful to the book, and without Mos Def. In fact, a mostly British cast would be nice.

I am actually writing a remake script of the movie Logans Run. Amazing Amazing concept. I've loved the movie since i was a kid. I actually imagine it a lot like the tron remake. Lots of young up and coming beautiful actors and actresses under 30 strutting around. If you haven't seen the movie, go find it on blu-ray or dvd. Its worth a watch. But i have a whole vision of what it should be.
