True, there's not very many things to "Hang On A Second" about here, and true, he does seem to be harping on the incest a bit, *BUT*...,
Let's face it, that incest-implying family tree with Lea Thompson playing his Great-Great(-Great?) Grandmother actually *is* a pretty dam glaring "Hang On A Second" moment when you think about it. And I admit, I never really thought about it until now, so yeah, my mind's kinda blown.

Yeah, the whole thing with both of Marty's ancestors looking like his parents was a bit weird to say the least.
Come to think of it, this reminds of Tremors 4 where Burt's great great great grandfather married Heather who looked liked Burt's wife in Tremors 1,
Oh well, I guess the writers think that unless both ancestors look like their respective descendants we won't be able to connect the dots.

Both my parents share a great-grandparent, too. That's not unusual at all in small towns. All it takes is for Seamus's wife to have had a sister, and for that sister to have sons and daughters. It may not be the pristine gene pool of a large city, but it's not the same as having sex with your own mother.

I know. His explanation actually made the whole thing make more sense. If marrying your third cousin three times removed is incest, the U.S. is full of incestuous people. (And it could have happened even earlier in the tree.)
And, anyways, who's to say they even know they are related? Even if they can trace their family tree back that far, it's possible that Maggie wasn't 100% faithful, or remarried later in life.
Then again, maybe that's the real reason why Lorraine's dad objected--he had Mike's definition of incest.

The explanation for William's mother to look like Lorraine is that the McFlys are genetically attracted to the same kind of woman. Similar to an Oedipus complex in which males seek out females whom resemble traits of their mother. Since Lorraine is a Baines, a British name it is unlikely for her to be related to William's mother whom is clearly Irish. Not proof enough? Jennifer Parker (Marty's girlfriend) resembles Marty's mother... how's that for consistency?
If that's not practical enough, they wanted to have Lea Thompson have a larger role in the third movie since she is such an important part of the cast.
