I like that Freezeframe-and-go analysis you're using.
On the whole this video feels very quiet though. During the showing of the clips, I am waiting for the next freeze frame.
Why?
I have no context, and the scenes themselves aren't terribly eventful. I think this review was meant for those familiar with the subject, but I think the lack of connection alienates many.
As I said, the specific reviewing style works VERY well for you, but work on that one point ;)

09.19.2011 - 20:52 | Random101This is an interesting premise but it could use some more work. It seems similar to what one other reviewer had with his trailer failure reviews, and with a similar problem involved. If you keep cutting in getting the flow of the scene and your comments kinda cut into each other.
It might be a better idea to let it run the whole way and then sum up or something, cutting back to the images to place the context of what we just saw. Might be able to throw a few jokes into there in the process. Also just pausing during your commentary is probably a bad idea if you do intend to keep this format. Cutting to yourself during those parts would help keep the overall flow of the video, though honestly the letting it run idea is probably a better route to take.

I'm more of a detailed, nit-picky kind of person when it comes to writing, not reviews, so I'm sorry that I don't have much concrit for your idea and execution on this. Although I do wonder if the movie clips are actually supposed to be that soft, because I found myself having to max out my volume just to hear anything on them half the time.
Anyway, welcome back. We certainly hope to see more from you again. :3

This format fits your style well. Not every review on this site needs to be funny (or in some cases a horrible attempt at being funny) to prove a point. While I think I liked this film more than you did you gave reasons and cited examples of things that did not work for you. Keep up the good work.
And as for the volume of the clips it very well may be the movie itself. Luke is right in that this is a very quiet film.

I like that it freezes instead of you letting it play while you talk and then go back to where the video was when you began talking.
There would have been too much looping.
And I also agree on the fact that it's a bit too quiet.
It's like... it almost lacks... I don't know.. background music? It could be the movie itself, though.
Because this quietness works during the second clip with the getaway scene and it didn't work at all when they were in the car not saying anything.
Why it worked during the second clip was 'cause those specific scenes were actually very good! It almost makes me want to see this movie!
So... overall.. I liked this review! =)

Edit: Now that I've let it sink in and watched it again...
As much as a review doesn't need to be funny to prove a point, I wouldn't mind if it was funny. *hint, hint*
It doesn't have to be hilarious, but you could open with a joke... or something? =3

This movie didn't quite work for me. I also thought it was ultimately style over substance. The chase scene at the beginning was the best part of the movie. If the whole film was more like that one scene, it would have been masterful.
It is very jarring when the next 30 mins or so drag on with slow, quiet moments. I don't have a problem with a movie taking that route, but it needs to feel substantive. The whole thing comes to a standstill for way too long. My patience was wearing thin.
When the driver gets involved with the next heist, that's when the movie got a lot more exciting to me. You get another excellent car chase and moments of absolutely brutal violence, especially the elevator scene. The gore comes way out of left field, too. I think the main character was more of a crazed killer than the villains.
I can see why critics loved Drive, due to the arthouse style the movie exudes. I know they like to eat that stuff up. I thought it was merely a few moments of brilliance in an otherwise slow, pretentious movie.

A year and a half ago, I read the book this movie was based on, with the specific intent of doing a video review of it. But then when I moved to a new place, I lost all of my notes, and my copy of the book, so that kind of killed my enthusiasm. Now that it's inexplicably gotten made into a movie, though, I should really try again.
Luke's take on the movie makes it sound like they stuck pretty close to the book's basic plot, as well as its style. It just tried way too hard to be gritty/edgy/noir, without really earning any of it.
The book's tagline: "I drive. That's what I do. All I do." And then I threw up in my mouth.

09.20.2011 - 12:55 | MrHolland1945I understand having different opinions about a movie, but anyone who says this is "pretentious" is full of shit. The first five minutes are not the best in the movie. Not even close. Those five minutes had an interesting car chase, well done and all, but there are so many better scenes. Any scene with Irene and Benicio is great, and makes Gosling seem like a perfect match for their family. Any brutal scene wouldnt be as brutal if you didnt have moments like Gosling asking Benicio if the character on the TV was a "bad guy", or "why is he a bad guy?". Those moments are slow, but deal with it; they're beautiful. If you cant calm down from that fucking car chase and appreciate the slow parts of this movie then you have no taste. You're a child who needs some Ritalin.

On the one hand, I liked your commentary on the film and felt it was a decent review of the film as a whole. But I don't know how viable this format of using clips from trailers/promotional material is, or if it will apply to every film. I can imagine there will be films where the trailers and promo-shots won't really be that interesting or grounds for in-depth discussion, and relying on them feels a bit limiting.
Still- I do believe it worked here, and if it helps you create a more "bite-sized" format for your reviews and help you produce content faster, I'm all for it. Even if I do miss your delightful other personalities.
