Can people fuck off with all the vampire movies!? There are all sorts of monsters you can use! There's skeletons, goblin, and not to mention all the terrifying shit in Icelandic folklore! Jesus fuck, give vampires a fucking rest!

And yet if there's something new that can be done with the concept, isn't it worth looking into? Or are you recommending we avoid all types of stories that have been told many times before?

If a movie is good, or at least has interesting and thought-provoking content, then it can make up for reusing familiar elements or mythology, And hell, still better than Twilight.
  • TheTundraTerror  - Here's the question you have to ask yourself
    avatar
    "Does this movie NEED vampires?"

I mean, it's obvious they're using vampires because vampires are to women what zombies are to CoD fratholes.

They're not even sticking with any of the vampire lore. Vampires don't reflect their image in a mirror, at yet there it is at the 55 second mark. Vampires nowadays are a fucking free for all.

    So, fuck this movie.

And what's wrong with feminists, may I ask?

And what's wrong with white supremacists , may I ask?
And what's wrong with muslim extremist , may I ask?
And what's wrong with pedophiles, may I ask?
And what's wrong with serial killers, may I ask?

The last one is a bit extreme, but I'm hoping you got the point at the first.
  • Satisfied Cat
kind of unfair comparisons you're making there. they all seem a tad extreme to put in the same category as the simple term "feminist". "Humanist" might make a more apt juxtaposition, if you're not in fact referring to extremists, which this film does not seem to represent.

Hyperbolic much? I wouldn't say women campaigning for female rights are anywhere near as bad as terrorists, racists and killers - in fact, such comparisons are outright offensive, I'd say.
  • Archedgar
    avatar
Mr. Buck, it's an honor that you would respond to one of my comments, I love your work and it is clear you make a great effort to be entertaining and analytical, +1.

Anyway, murder, yes, hyperbolic. White supremacy? no, that is completely appropriate. Feminism is the parallel to white supremacy in the field of sex instead of race, in fact, I would dare say that feminism is worse than white supremacy due to the state sanctioned behavior that comes with the feminist atrocities.

Generally speaking, racial supremacist groups do not enjoy state support the way feminists do. Feminists are not campaigning for "equality" or "female rights", they campaign for privilege and supremacy. Just visit any of the popular feminist websites and see how long it takes for you to find extreme rhetoric and ideologues pushing that stance under the guise of "equality".

No sir. An intelligent man would never support feminism and would see right through their hypocrisy, hate-speech and misandry. But I am only a humble viewer and this is your video, carry on.

Hey look. One of those guys who takes seriously and internalizes all the patent nonsense he sees on the Internet because he hasn't had to step out into the real world yet.

Alternatively: Hey look. A white male who doesn't want to take responsibility for his failures.
  • ohe

"Feminism is the parallel to white supremacy"

Only in theory, not in practice. And because feminism is ideologically a very practical movement, that makes the comparability moot. In other words, there's not much of a feminist imperialism going around, never has been, and realistically won't be in any foreseeable future. White supremacy has earned its threatening status by actually justifying bad things in the past. Feminism makes itself so ridiculous by its name alone that its effectively powerless to cause any major harm for anything.

I suppose what makes you an "intelligent" man is that you will feel compromised by ideas alone, without substance. I'd rather be more of a practical person than an intelligent man.

...Did you just compare a group of people who believe in equality (feminists) with a group of people who believe in supremacy, not to mention murderers and paedophiles?

I'm guessing that you're the type of person to use the term "feminazi" about any woman who dares to talk about feminism in even the most mild terms.
  • Bellarius

You confuse a fight for equal rights to a fight for female rights. I don't agree with Archedgar's statements but the two are not the same so please don't suggest it as such. Especially considering some of the things we've seen from some so-called feminists over the years.
  • Extreme-Madness  - re:Bellarius

The primary goal of feminism was to equate women's rights with the rights of men (the fact that many radical feminists now want more than that is a different story).
In short, the first objective was to achieve equal rights.
Try to logically explain why the realization of women's rights is not the same as the realization of equal rights.

I can thus argue that the realization of the rights of homosexuals is not the same as the realization of equal rights. or the realization of the rights of other races is not the same as the realization of equal rights, I'm sorry but I do not see any logic here.
  • ohe
    avatar
"Try to logically explain why the realization of women's rights is not the same as the realization of equal rights."

Okay, I won't really go for "logical" now per se, but I'll instead try and put this in the simplest of terms I can.

Imagine a Rubik's cube. Every side affects the others. Feminism takes the approach of solving only those sides of the cube feminists perceive as way too far from being solved when comparing to the other sides. They perceive some sides as men's sides, others as women's sides, and are only trying to solve the sides they see as their own, one at a time and not making even temporary compromises over the sides they think they are getting along fine.

Now go and solve a Rubik's cube. We'll continue after you've finished and recount what we've learned.
  • Archedgar

Feminism is about sex equality the same way the Klu Klux Klan is about racial integration.

Not sure why so many kids are buttmad over the statement of reality that Feminists are the equivalent of white supremacists but for sex instead of race... Granted, the murder bit was rather extreme, so I humbly withdraw that comparison.
  • Extreme-Madness

I just thought, Archedgar recently left reasonable comments lately, I should have known that it was just the calm before the storm.
I'll pretend that you under the term feminism actually think solely on radical feminism, but even the worst of radical feminists do not deserve to be in the same category with white supremacists, muslim extremist, pedophiles (WTF, really?) and serial killers (WTF !).
Now you look like a jerk.
  • mr_rubino

I loved Interview with a Vampire. It got me into Anne Rice, which is funny you say the film is a masculine take on vampires since it's written by a woman. I just find it interesting and cool. When I read the description of your video, I immediately though of Maven's comments on the rarity of vampires that are great female characters, and this seems like a film (and especially a Gothic feminist like me) will enjoy. Thank you for otherwise I would have never heard of this film. I really look forward to see it when it comes out in the U.S. I mean, I enjoy entertaining movies as much as others, but nothing brings me more joy than a movie or a show that makes think and question things.

Wonder if Maven will review Byzantium soon in the future or when it comes to the US? You're right, this film will make her very happy :D
&Dang! this is the most invested I've ever seen Film Brain react towards a movie. Flaws or no, one can't deny an effect that strongly influenced on a person, ha-sorry getting of track~ &You-fanime1-keep being your awesome, Gothic, feminist self & don't let anyone tell you otherwise :)

Hmm, so mixed then, it's a shame the narrative flow was jumbled when so many of the other elements worked well if I follow what you're getting at correctly.

Film looks interesting. Personally, my favorite vampire film/book will probably always be "Let The Right One In", but I'm willing to give anything a sporting chance. The waterfall of blood was certainly beautiful - in fact, the imagery in this movie generally seems altogether gorgeous. Think I'll give this one a try.
  • Ginger...  - wow :0

This is the most investment towards a movie that I've seen Film Brain speak on in a while. I think I'll give Byzantium a go if it's playing in my town since I've been looking for a good feminine take on the vampire genre that isn't 30 years or older(where has respectful feminism gone TMT). Also, I can't wait to see the smile on Maven/Elisa's face when she talks about this movie, despite its flaws I think she will be 10 times more overjoyed than I to find well rounded female characters in a modern day vampire movie, I wonder where the sisters would fall in on the list she made not to long ago? hmm
  • Kitten Champion
It's piqued my interests. An adult take on a genre stifled in the morass of Twilight and pointless action movies is exactly what I've been hoping for. It will also buck my current trend of nothing but explosion-laden movies recently.

I think if I accept its has problems and just focus on the ideas it puts forth, I'll enjoy it.
  • ScowlingDragon  - Ugh
Usually when I hear the words "Feminist Fiction" I run for the hills. Because any story that defines itself by being feminist I usually find is just about: "Hey you! Yeah you! You horrible man! FEEL BAD! Even though you hurt nobody FEEL BAD!".

That is not to say I dislike movies with female protagonists. For me that doesn't matter what gender they are. But a story that defines itself as "Power for women (And what often gets twisted into MEN SUCK!)" Im obviously not the target audience.

But I do dislike movies with Anti-Hero vampires. One thing I hate the most is vampires that go around killing "Those that deserve it!". As In im fine with sympathetic vampires, but I hate it when movies try to make me root for them (Unless they are Discworld Vampires)

So this seems like a movie not for me.

I really find this new format of yours engaging. While I kinda miss the fast shot-by-shot sort of reflection you'd give in previous Projector segments, the fact that you get so into what you liked/disliked about the movie makes it enjoyable in a more personal way. I do hope you haven't adopted it out of any self-consciousness concerning your voice and the inflections you used to put in when speaking your lines, FB. :) It's just nice to see you trying out something new-ish.

This seems like quite a refreshing take on the whole "vampire" theme. I like the idea that Clara and Eleanor aren't extravagantly wealthy or holed up in some remote castle. They're doing their best to adapt to the modern era.

Eleanor's method of choosing her victims reminds me of something from the Dinotopia books (which are awesome). Dinotopia is an uncharted island where dinosaurs survived to the present day, and most of them live alongside humans in cities or on farms. The big carnosaurs, like Tyrannosaurus and Allosaurus, have chosen to live in the Rainy Basin, a huge rainforest. When a dinosaur is ready to die, it puts on its funeral banners, enters the Rainy Basin, and makes its way to one of the appropriated clearings, where it dies. Then all the nearby carnosaurs come and feast on the corpse. This way, the carnosaurs don't need to hunt, and no one has to dig an enormous grave for the deceased. Everyone benefits.

    Great review :)

Gemma Arterton is gorgeous and makes for a sexy vampire. The movie has the look too, stylized gothic goodness. But a slogging pace ruins it. And just once I'd like to see vampires the way they used to be. I'm all for trying something different from time to time but you can tell that writers are having a hard time coming up w/ something new to do w/ the lore that is also interesting. Here's an idea; why not just give vampires back the fangs, shapeshifting, heightened physical abilities, aversion to daylight, etc...you know, just to mix things up?
  • ohe
    avatar
There's not really much point. All the defining characteristics of pop-cultural vampires weren't originally the characteristics of that specific monster, but illustrations of how such a creature is alienated and strange to the world around it, with the twist being how this conflicts with the humanity in the beast. If you're thinking about "original" vampires, you're better of dropping the trite concepts of vampirism in the first place and focus just on the man as monster, monster as a man dichotomy of it. Leeching on decent people and aversion to light just aren't that monstrous anymore, now that we have World of Warcraft and all.

In theory you could make the concept of vampire into a short-hand for setting the human/monster theme, but that wouldn't work anymore now that dullards like TheTundraTerror have been so over-exposed to those superficial aspects of "vampires". They just wouldn't make the connection easily enough to justify it, the concept has left our social consciousness.

Come to think of it, I'd watch the hell out of a comedy about a 6000-year-old child of the night who feels all disenfranchised because her monstrosity just doesn't matter anymore. People would just be like "ewww" rather than "AAAH!".

  • LaughterIsMusic  - Like your previews!
    Hello FB,

I wanted to drop a comment to let you know I've been watching projector for a while, and I really like your style when you do these reviews.

It's a tricky thing to convey an informative review that really explains why you like or didn't like this or that whilst not getting all spoilery in the process. It seems to me you've found a pretty good balance.

    Anecdote:
My wife and I went see Chronicle based solely on your review of it. The previews had me believing it was going to be some very teenagery kind thing, and after your review I saw I had an incorrect impression. We both really enjoyed that one.

Anyhow, like your work, and good luck making more of it.
  • elasticdragon  - I like Projector, but BMB?... ehhhh
    avatar
Okay, only constructive criticism here, I really loved BMB, and that definitely Conveys a more character based Matt Buck... But as the BMBs went by, your roller coaster pitch of anger is REALLY distracting from your jokes. It used to be funny, then in season 2-3 became bearable... but these days I've had to close out the window before finishing the review... & Like I said, I LOVE BMB! The writing and your jokes are great, but the angry character you are playing is becoming almost a parody of itself...

When I watch Projector, your intelligence and true educated savvy sings out, and I really enjoy them. Put the transcripts of BMB & Projector together, and you can tell right away they are both written by you, but I beg you to reign in the SUPER HIGH PITCHED to ultra low pitched cadence of your reviews...

    Much love-

    TJ
