So jealous, but glad that the movie is good!

I've never much cared for the Marvel movies so I'm not sure if I'll check this one out.

I think one of the reasons the other Avengers aren't in it is that one: they have their own conflicts to face, two: while the peril may be great Iron Man wouldn't be as credible as he is if he couldn't handle something of THIS magnitude on his own, three: the Avengers are usually used to combat "end gamer" situations like the alien invasion. At the very least cameos or references would be cool but that would just be icing on the cake.

Looking forward to see this movie sometime later this week. I'm glad this movie was greatly praised thus far. I thought Iron Man 2 was ok; but yeah it had a ton of problems. So I'm glad this one is improved immensely before I go into it. Hopefully the other Marvel sequels after this one hold up to the hype and production as well. There can't be another Iron Man or Stark related adventure whether it be solo or the whole Marvel Universe related in film without RDJ. He's perfected and related to that role now more than ever.

I've noticed that you've developed a speech and tonal pattern that, after hearing it so often, I can actually predict how you're going to say things, especially at the end of sentences. In the beginning of your run here, it sounded more like you were talking to us in a conversational way, but now, it's very obvious this is your "reading the script/rehearsed" voice. Granted, I'd still watch you even if you started speaking Russian; I mean I was introduced to this site through you, but I do miss the more natural way you use to talk. Regardless, thanks for all the time and effort you spend entertaining us.

This. Honestly, the voice-pattern is getting pretty annoying lately, with the unnecessarily dragged out vowels. It's okay for the introduction and such, to add some individuality to it, but when you have to listen to it throughout the entire video, it just gets grating.
Say, Matthew? Could you, maybe, just tone it down a tiny little bit? To, say, early 2012 level? It would be much appreciated. :)

I actually had a different camera(s) in early 2012, and neither were particularly great sound-wise. Could it just be you can hear me more clearer than previously?
  • DeanD  - Personally
I've never cared for the Iron Man films (or any of the Phase 1 movies except Avengers) but really enjoyed Iron Man 3. It just seemed a little smarter, a little more complex and urgent than the others. And a whole lot funnier.

As always, I really enjoy your reviews!

Thanks Matthew I am so freaking pumped for this movie! I have been looking forward to this since I heard they were making a third one. An I saw Iron Man and INSTANTLY fell in love with Robert Downey Jr, as I just LOVE how he portrays his characters, an ever since then, I have saw almost all of his films, and some of them are now my favorites and now own. He's become my favorite actor of all time. Because it's his energy, and life that he gives to his performances, even when the movies themselves aren't good, his characters and performances are so genuine since you can see his life and love for what he's doing. And it's because of Iron Man that people like me now see what an amazing man this is, and given him a second chance and well deserved praises. RDJ, the KING of awesome! :)
Oh an this movie is coming out in May 3rd in Canada. Iron Man 3 on the 3RD. Hmm...Clever marketing or coincidence....

Film Brain, have you ever considered doing ratings at the end of your Projector videos?
Ratings from 1-10 or 1-5, or something third?
Or do you find them redundant, and would like for people to rely on your actual criticism, and not numbers?
  • Film Brain
    avatar
I used to use star ratings back when I did text reviews, but dropped them towards the end because people were looking at star ratings more than the actual reviews themselves, and I got into a controversy over the score I gave Inglourious Basterds.

So, am I the only one that liked Iron Man 2? :P

3 was great (though it could have skipped some of the random NPC getting more screen time than actual characters moments). I really liked the twist, and no, it's not the twist you think I'm talking about, it's the other one.
Like, it makes you think it's an adaptation of Extremis, but it isn't. It makes you think it's about a certain ... well, can't really talk about it.

Spoiler, don't read the next lin

The fight with Fin Fang Foom was awesome!
  • Frevoli
    I liked Iron Man 2

Also - I wasn't bothered with "Where are the Avengers" since obviously they have their own stuff to do

...however, I was wondering where SHIELD was

One of their guys calls out a terrorist, and they don't bother sending a car round to check on him?

But yeah - Iron Man 3 was awesome

I didn't mind the absence of the other Avengers too much - the Mandarin is a threat that Hulk & Thor really aren't equipped to investigate. Having said that, IM3 has terrorist attacks on American soil and the President threatened on national television - where the hell is Captain America? If the writers had at least acknowledged Cap's existence, maybe have Stark & Rogers check in with each other after the initial attack by the Mandarin.
  • Mirocchi
    avatar
This! I thought the same. Where is Cap? I mean Thor doesn't really live on Earth and you'd have to piss off Bruce personally to get him involved, but this really seems like a thing Captain America would be interested in. Well, maybe Winter Soldier will give some answers to what he was doing. I hope so.

Either something is wrong, like you have a cold, or your voice suddenly became very annoying.. Which is hard to believe because I LOVE the accent...

Sorry to say that but I strongly disagree with Filmbrain.
This is one of the worst movies I have ever seen, compared to this Spiderman 3 looked like Lord of the Rings...

    was a good movie.
  • Tom The Dutch Guy  - iron man 3
yeah i'll keep it simple, i liked it but it was not that great a movie in my opinion i give it 3,5 stars
  • gambit3le  - I'm going to see it.
Thanks for the heads up on the movie.
I'm actually excited to go see a movie for the first time in a long time. The last time I got excited at all about a movie it was Die Hard 5... so yeah.
Anyway, I really liked both Iron Man 1 and 2 a lot. I always hear people hating on 2, I don't see the problems most people seem to have.

    About the voice thing...
Its weird, but when I started watching your videos, I was able to enjoy them more... Now its almost like you have a whining nasal tone to your voice. That's not the whole problem though. I think you are trying to put too much EMPHASIS on EVERY little THING. Its almost as if you are reading from a script and when you get to something typed in all caps your voice goes up.

I guess what I'm suggesting is doing an out-loud read-through before recording, or just doing a no-video audio recording to hear where your voice goes too high or too low.

I teach English and this is a problem that a lot of my students have, they don't know how to put just enough emphasis on their phrases and end up sounding ridiculous. I've found that by having them listen to recordings of themselves and make several re-recordings they can often get things into a more conversational and even tone pretty quickly.

Anyway, good analysis and good information about the film.

    Keep on truckin'

Seen it meself. Not a bad film. Tense in places, loved all the variant suits, thought the Dragon's come-uppance was a little weak, but the whole Mandarin thing was handled well (less so if you know the Comic Mandarin at all).

Thanks for this, And see you folks at the picture show! :)
  • Siphon92
Just got done seeing this movie. Thought it was the weakest of the three. Sure there were a lot funny jokes, but the story telling and elements itself were really lacking. To me they marketed a movie that seemed like it was going to be darker Iron Man movie. Like the Mandarin was going to be a foe that Iron Man has never faced before and his world was going to be rocked forever for it... And they did such a good job setting that tone at the beginning! Then it just turned into a comedy... Jokes are good, but such a dramatic tone change left me disappointed... Oh and after The Avengers pretty much established to all of Earth that "magic" exists, the Mandarin was just a huge middle finger..

I think I'm right in step with Mathew here. I really enjoyed the movie, although the "twist" I thought was a misfire and didn't do anything to the overall film except act as a cock-block for fans of the comics. Considering details we know of the villainous organization from the first film, it basically makes several points a bit confused without added explanation.
  • dead_alewives  - It was....."meh"

I have to disagree with a few of the points Film Brain made about this movie. For starters, I found the pacing to be good the first third of the running time, but after about an hour or so the story drags a bit and loses a lot of the excitement that it was previously building up.

The dialogue loses a lot of the appeal that the previous films (especially the first movie) had. The regular speaking lines are great, but as for the comedy, it's mostly lackluster. Sure there are a few good laughs here and there, but the majority of the jokes are too easy and bland for my taste.

The side characters have fitting, well-written parts in this movie though a couple of them are put a bit on the back-burner. Pepper Pots, for example, has a much stronger role than she's had previously, but War Machine was a bit sidelined by only having a few short scenes thrown in here-and-there (except for a majority of the third act).

I feel I should also mention the action. I found a lot of it too over-the-top and flashy. I know that may sound obvious since I'm talking about a Marvel movie, but watch the film's climax and compare those scenes to the previous Iron Man films and you'll see what I mean.

As for the *twist*...ugh. I kind of felt like it was a cop-out. I can't express too much of an opinion about it without giving a spoiler so I'll stop there.

Overall, it was an all right movie. Worth the ticket price? Sure. Worth multiple viewings? No. Better or as good as the first film? Not even close.

Great review and great movie. However, your voice sounds kinda weird. It seems like you´re trying a bit to hard with your delivery.
  • manoftomorrow79
I'm sorry film brain but I believe you are wrong with this movie being good. I will say it has some funny moments I liked and the finale. Was longer compared the prior two solo films combined. But the film does have faults that makes it terrible film which I'll explain.

For starters James Rhodie was never Iron Patriot it was first worn by Norman Osborne. A huge complaint I had which you didn't even address was Ben Kingsley.Wasn't the Mandarin he was paid by Guy Pearce's character (who revealed himself in the finale to be the real Mandarin) to call himself the Mandarin.

The trailer clearly and deliberately lied to every movie goer across the world.Who believed Ben's character would be fighting Tony in the finale and speaking of the finale we see Pepper not only fall to her death but surrounded by fire. When it's latter revealed she survived all we got was a "did you really think that would do me in?" No clear explanation like one of Tony's A.I. suits caught her we're just expected to turn off our brains and accept the movie's logic.

You don't even have to read the comics to know about the Iron Man mythology just use google or Wikipedia it.And lastly in the final part of the film Tony finally decides to remove the shrapinal from his chest.Tony is rich why didn't have it done in Iron Man 2? You know when he the shrapinal was actually endangering his life!
  • Film Brain
    avatar
I couldn't address the Ben Kingsley turn because that would be a spoiler.

As for Pepper's survival, she was injected with Extremis, which means she had the healing abilities the others had, and that's how she survived.

As for why Stark didn't get it removed before? It's a potential fatal, very risky surgery that requires a big commitment, as well as symbolic representing that he doesn't need his suits. Could he have got it removed earlier? Certainly, but he didn't want to.
  • BarrelSax4526  - "Meh"-ness it's not just me!!
I'm happy that some other viewers are not blowing this movie's nether regions like it's the best thing since PB&J. I thought the film was okay, it will make a shitload of money because people love RDJ's awesome-ness, but I think it should of been the film the trailers were setting it up to be in tone, as many have noted, it feels like Lethal Weapon 5, starring the cast of Iron Man. And I say meh.

Loved the movie. However that plot twist made the movie bomb a little bit. However that ending made the movie survive and I will forgive the directors.
