12.13.2012 - 21:27 | voxa.m.Every time I see that you are reviewing the cinematic adaptation of a great classic novel, I become hopeful that this time there will be overall positive things to be said.... I guess I'll just keep my fingers crossed for next time.

12.14.2012 - 01:45 | pomaflahWhen I went to this review, I knew the movie was going to be awful in plot, because it bills it as being by the same director as Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, widely acknowledged to be the worst Harry Potter movie. So I mostly watched it because I love genuine British accents, and I love your character (do you deliberately use as many accent-influenced vowels as possible?). Finding out that it wasn't terrible was interesting. Great review!

12.14.2012 - 15:28 | MrDarkboy2010what do you mean 'goblet of fire is 'widely acknowledged to be the worst Harry Potter movie'? I'm pretty sure that Order of the Phoenix has Goblet beat in that department by a long shot.

12.14.2012 - 11:51 | EwanwhosarmyI thought the girl who played Estella was damn hot. Then I found out that she's the little girl who played Princess Kate in Roger and the Rottentrolls. Now I feel kinda dirty. Bad dirty.

I likewise can't believe we have yet another adaptation, especially so soon after the recent BBC adaptation. There's a lot of this going around lately, and unless someone has a new apporach to these classics, I don't know why money keeps being spent on making them.
On the other hand, while the 2011 BBC adaptation wasn't groundbreaking, I thought Gillian Anderson was remarkable as Miss Havisham. The choice there as to how to play the role was a case of actually bringing something fresh and new to material that's been retread too many times before.
Interesting to see Ralph Fiennes come full circle - once upon a time he was Heathcliffe, now he's aged into Magwitch. At least he's not Scrooge... yet...

The only adaptation of GE I've ever seen was the Ethan Hawke version, and I remember not really caring for it. The part that sticks out most in my memory was how shitty Pip's art was in that movie, and how everyone kept acting so awed by it. This review makes me want to track down that black and white version to see if I might like the story better in the hands of a more capable filmmaker.
I suppose one thing you could give to this movie is that at least it's a costume drama, not a sad attempt to put the story in a modern setting like so many movies did in the 90's.
