While I do respect Matthew's opinion, I have something of a selfish reason for checking this out - I was an extra in this film, and I wanted to see if I could find a clip of myself. Sadly, my efforts were fruitless. The clip at 6:06 is the scene I appeared in, but I wasn't anywhere to be seen. It was seriously like playing Where's Waldo with myself.

When all of the Avenger actually assembled in battle stance I had a horrible sensation that maybe the film would cut leaving us in one of those fucking cliffhangers that are becoming quite common in the blockbusters, but my heart rested as I saw by myself that the movie actually goes the distance and gives us all that has been promised to us for the past five years.

05.03.2012 - 01:13 | littleliliI've got about 21 hours to go before my showing starts. And I am so excited. The friend that I am going with and myself have been planning this trip to the movie theater since Captain America.

The film contains more impressive, iconic moments than any superhero film I've seen. It also has one of the best scenes on film, ever. I mean that long tracking shot near the end of the movie. I think that's the right terminology.
But aside from that, Hulk! They finally did right by Hulk. And the way Black Widow and Hawkeye were given backstory to compensate for their lack of solo movies. And the way Iron Man...
(Continues gushing about The Avengers for the length of a medium sized novella)

I was a little pissed at first that we'd missed the 2D showing and had to settle with 3D cause I think it often looks like crap and tends to distract from the movie... However, I did find the 3D to be extremely good here and it did add to the film, would never have guessed it was a conversion.
That said, it did have it's problems. Most notably when the action starts going it seems that the 3D can't always keep up with it and it goes fairly blurry and hard to make out at times. Though it's only a minor issue.
As for the rest of the film, yeah I really, really enjoyed it. I was sceptical at first over Nortons replacement with Mark Ruffalo, however upon seeing the character here, I'm happy to say that Ruffalo does his own thing with the character rather than trying to emulate Nortons.
He does bring a good hint of vulnerability to the character that I feel was greatly lacked in the Norton version. He seemed more nerdy and less threatening while Norton seemed like he could hold his own Hulk or not (He learns BJJ personally from Rickson Gracie and even shows effective use of it).
That's not to say I didn't enjoy Nortons performance, only he seemed much more actiony while Ruffalo seemed more vulnerable and more believable.
Overall it's one of the best Super hero movies I've ever seen and I'm glad the wait has paid off.
Edit: Just to add, the main money shot of the Avengers Assembling was one of the most glorious shots I've seen in the history of cinema and I could hardly believe my eyes as I watched some of my greatest comic heroes all on screen, in the same shot... Nerdgasm.

I hadn't anticipated a film this much since Return of the King; I saw it opening night. And yeah, I can't disagree with this review. Nice job, Film Brain.
Avengers is definitely a game-changer; its success could bring about a new trend in blockbuster cinema where the primary focus is the characters and story rather than the spectacle of CGI, pyrotechnics and whatever else Michael Bay and his imitators throw at the screen. At least I hope so.

I've been hoping this movie could pull through as so many others haven't. I respect your opinions because I want similar things in my movies, and it is very, very exciting to hear it'll be worth it when it hits the States!
This might be the first movie I'll see in theaters since Avatar. It's been a while.

Loved this film - it could so easily have ended up a Transformers franchise mess, but it worked brilliantly on every level. Funny, great action scenes, and most importantly you actually get to care about the characters. Perfectly cast too.
If you liked this then give "Cabin In The Woods" a try - also a Joss creation and so very much more than meets the eye. I think it's still out in cinemas.

Got to see it yesterday and after waiting so very long for this, I can safely say I was not dissapointed. It was everything I was expecting from Joss Weedon. The action was superb, the dialog was spot on, the unique 'Wheedon' humor was there and it was sad and emotional when it needed it to be.
Every character got a good amount of screen time with plenty to do and say, I never felt like one of them got way more to do than the others which could have very easily happend. For me though, the star of the show was the Hulk. Even though he's not around as much as everyone else (afterall, Bruce spends alot of time trying not to make the change), when he is around every single second of screen time is just unbelievable.
If there is to be a sequel in the future, I wouldn't want anyone other than Joss in the director chair again. In my eyes, the man can do no wrong.

05.03.2012 - 13:26 | Crunchy_FrogIn regard to Hulk-themed comics or those Hulk movies, I could never get into them because to me the Hulk as a character ("a big green rage monster" as Tony Stark calls him) is godawful boring! Banner might be interesting, but usually, in the Hulk movies, you know that the audience doens't give a damn about Banner's part of the story and just waits for him to turn into the Hulk already. But once the Hulk is unleashed it's just bland nonstop HulkSmash! action.
But in Avengers, I even liked the Banner/Hulk character. Not my favorite of all available protagonists (that would be Loki and Ironman), but yeah, the "big green rage monster" was done well, in regard to CGi and in regard to characterization.
