02.29.2012 - 07:23 | LighticeSo, why are all the Arabs played by Westerners? Who don't even look remotely Arabic? Did the producers assume that it's impossible for Westerners to sympathise with non-white Arabs?

I have to say, the most memorable part of this film seems to be its poster and the similarities I'm seeing with old-school film posters, bust shots of big stars superimposed against one of the movies backdrops, that kinda thing... only done with actual images, instead of a painted poster.
... Actually the poster probably would look better if it was painted and harkened back to the era of "epic" and glamorous Hollywood.

being an Arab my self i guess one would assume i'd understand this movie or relate to it more than non Arabs. wrong, this movie is bad plain and simple. it has nothing to do with actual Arab conflict in history. i can't say that i care much about the actors not being Arab. that for me is not an issue as long as the actors do a good performance. Antony Coin did a great role of an Arabic reflationary Umar Al-Mukhtar in the movie Desert Lion and his performance was great. he was even acknowledged by Arab critics themselves.
going back to this movie it really is flat on story and acting. i wanted the movie to be good. i wanted it to be an epic drama with good story telling. alas, that was not the case. the setting and premise was promising but the end outcome was just a mess.
thanks filmbrain for a good representation of the movie. as always looking foreword to your work.
peace

Anyways, thanks for the insightful review. It's always good to know that even Oscar bait can be terrible.
